Home-Ec 101 Book Review

I recently got a chance to review a really interesting book - Home-Ec 101 by Heather Solos.

Just looking through the table of contents of this book really piqued my interest, because it covers every major category of homemaking (or skills for everyday living) - from cleaning to washing to repairs to cooking.

In the cooking section, I really thought the chapter on meal planning was good for everyone. It was a quick, easy read, but was filled with good information. If you've never done meal planning before, the chapter gives a step by step process, complete with some easy beginner recipes. The goal for beginners isn't to cook gourmet meals every night, it's just to keep from going to the drive-thru. If you've already got the hang of meal planning, there are still some great tips - I especially liked the idea of theme nights such as Meatless Monday, Taco Tuesday, etc. where you can make recipes ranging from simple to complex for each theme while keeping meal planning an easy process.

I really enjoyed this chapter and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the book! Really, no matter what your skill or experience level is, there's something to be gained from reading Home-Ec 101. If you'd like to check it out, it's available on Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

Extreme Couponing - Huge Coupon Roundup!

The first of 12 episodes of Extreme Couponing premiered last night on TLC - did you watch? I didn't watch it, and I read a really good post yesterday on Deal Seeking Mom, one of my favorite coupon/freebie blogs, that I completely agree with. It's called Why I Won't Be Watching Extreme Couponing, and I especially like how she says that her goal is practical, not extreme, couponing.

I have to admit that I have become slightly obsessed with couponing since January, but I am not even close to the extreme couponers on that show! I think that show misrepresents couponers...only a few are that extreme. I definitely don't clear shelves or buy 100 of something that I don't use (actually I don't buy any of something I don't use), but coupons have literally cut my grocery bill in half over the past few months. And I think that's pretty awesome! :)

Whether you watched or not, I wanted to share some of the coupons I've been taking advantage of this week and repost some of the older ones that I've listed before - they're still available if you want to check them out. You don't have to be an "extreme couponer" to have fun and save some money!

Purex Complete Crystals Fabric Softener Review and Giveaway -ends 3/8-

As a Purex Insider, I got to try a sample of the new Purex Complete Crystals Fabric Softener.

One thing I really like about the crystals is that you just put them in at the beginning of the load along with your detergent. You don't have to remember to catch the right cycle to put them in, it's super easy. Another thing that's important to me is that Purex Complete Crystals are 92% natural. Most other fabric softeners are oil-based, which means that a residue will start to build up on clothing after a few uses, and with continual use. It's recommended that you don't use oil-based liquid fabric softeners with towels because the residue will coat the fibers, making the towels less absorbent. With Purex Complete Crystals, those problems are eliminated! They're not oil-based, instead the crystals infuse into the fabric, making the freshness last and last. The product didn't leave a residue on my clothes, it just left them smelling good and fresh!

There are three different scents available: Fresh Spring Waters, Tropical Splash, and Lavender Blossom.

I received the Fresh Spring Waters scent to test. I did like the scent, but it took some getting used to because I have been using Free and Clear detergent for a long time. When I initially poured the crystals into the washer with my clothes, the scent was fairly strong. But once I got the clothes out of the dryer, they just smelled really fresh and clean, and the scent was noticeable but much less overpowering.

I'm Back! With Two Week Tune-Up Results!

So I have taken a break...longer than I thought it'd be. But I'm back and ready to share the results of the Yoplait Two Week Tune Up with you! It's been quite a while so if you'd like to read about more info on the Two Week Tune Up, my plan of action, getting started, and my first week results, feel free to catch up!

So how did I do? Well...at the end of the second week I had lost another 1.4 lbs, down to 152.4 pounds! That makes a total of 3.0 pounds lost in just two weeks! The program promised a 5 pound loss in two weeks, but again, I didn't follow it exactly, so I was happy with the results I got. I feel like that was a healthy amount of weight lost, nothing crazy that I'm going to gain right back. If you're interested in trying it out, I'd definitely recommend the Yoplait Two Week Tune Up! I can honestly say that I never felt hungry while following the plan. I actually felt really full a lot of times because eating a fruit and a grain and a yogurt...then a serving of a vegetable just a couple hours later kept me full. I felt like I was eating all day.

The only problem is that I stopped with the healthy eating as soon as it was over, and I haven't lost any weight since. Why is it that the foods that are the worst for you are what you crave? I have the hardest time with self control. I guess I'm not alone in that but it is so frustrating. So my goal is to get back on the plan...or just back to the healthy fruits and vegetables.
