Size is the Prize in the Beholder’s Eyes

Greetings from Clancy, half of your humble Patrons of the Arfs! Today two friends, Pancho and Lefty, are here to illustrate a point. (Loath to share the spotlight, Shayna will return next time.)

It has come to my attention that there are those who classify Lakeland Terriers as small dogs. While at 14”, we tower over Chihuahuas, we do fall somewhat short in comparison to Great Danes, who can reach a height of more than 30”.

But what has size to do with matters of art? I’m glad you asked, because while for some, bigger is better, there is no denying the appeal of smaller things. (Think of the tiny house craze or, if you will, miniature art.)

This art form can be found in prestigious museums and prized art collections the world over, including the White House and Smithsonian. Ever since medieval times, people have had a fascination with miniature art. This is especially true in modern times. In a fast-moving world, miniature art gives us an opportunity to slow down, stop and appreciate rich, exquisite detail.

Artists who typically create large works love the challenge to stretch their artistic muscles and work in a smaller, albeit demanding, format that demands perfection. And the art lovers who collect their work appreciate having the opportunity to acquire one-of-a-kind, original works of art for prices comparable to those of reproductions.

That’s why I’m so excited to announce Gallery One’s 25^th Masterworks in Miniature® Show, taking place May 10 through May 25. Comprised of original watercolor, oil, acrylic and mixed media works, Masterworks in Miniature® also offers original bronze, fired clay, lost wax and ceramic sculptures. Genres will include wildlife, portraits, still life, landscape, abstract, Western and fantasy by these world renowned artists. Happy Trails to You!

Greetings from Shayna and brother Clancy! We hope your holidays were happy, and we want to thank you for all your good wishes and wish you all the best in 2019!

We went on a quick holiday road trip with our folks in our RV. Like you, Clancy and I LOVE to see new places. Now that we’re back at work, the start of a brand-new year seemed like an ideal time to share with you some captivating destinations captured by one of our favorite artists, Robert Finale! His work will transport you to lovely and romantic settings, right in the comfort of your home.

At the tender age of two, Robert and his family fled communist Cuba and settled in the U.S. The adversity and struggles his family endured instilled in the young boy an appreciation for the value of hard work as well as a sense of discipline. Ever since he was a youngster, Robert had a passion for art, sketching everything he could. His mother treasured his sketches and encouraged her son to always keep them and care for them.

Early on, Robert worked as an electrician before discovering his natural talent for painting with oils. Entirely self-taught, this incredible artist is also an avid traveler. He uses his photos, sketches and memories to begin each painting, creating detailed landscapes that take the viewer throughout the United States, to South America, Europe and the Mediterranean.

Michael contributed the foreword for a new book, The Artists of Kawartha, featuring his painting, Forgotten Chores, on the cover as well as additional works inside.

Michael grew up in the village of Whitney near the entrance to Algonquin Park, where some of his earliest childhood recollections were of times spent feeding the deer and visiting the museum. Built in 1953, the museum is now known as the Algonquin Art Centre. Michael worked his way through art college as a park ranger there from 1969 – 1971.

As one of the artists featured in a PBS television documentary series, Michael had cited the Algonquin Art Centre as an integral influence on his art. He was recently honored as the very first recipient of the “Algonquin Legacy Award,” established to recognize individuals who have actively contributed to supporting, promoting or utilizing the features of Algonquin Park for cultural and/or research purposes.

Michael, with other members of the Artists for Conservation, participated in the “Silent Skies” project, a mural depicting the 678 birds worldwide that are designated as endangered by the International Ornithological Congress. Each bird was to be painted on an 8” x 8” x 3/4” panel to be arranged as a multi-tiered composite that would stretch over 100 feet when assembled.

A number of species were missing from the mural at its September opening, and ARC members are working to fill those spaces by the time the mural travels to museums over the next few years. Michael has committed to six bird paintings for this effort. Shown below are four of his exquisite works that were completed in time for the inaugural exhibit in Vancouver.

What’s a Trundle, you ask?

A Trundle is a colorful little creature that hides in plain sight. (You probably have a Trundle or two living in your own house and don’t even know it.) According to Dean Morrissey, “Their purpose is a good one. They quietly go about helping their host in many ways. They sweep up in the middle of the night, secretly finish up bookkeeping, haul firewood and repair broken windows and leaky pipes. They are very appreciative of their hosts and become indispensable after a while. Very few people have actually seen a Trundle although many people have them as boarders.”

ASK yourself – have you ever:

Lost something and searched your entire house, only to spot it easily a short time later? (You have a Trundle.)
Gone to the fridge for a snack and found a BRAND-NEW jar of peanut butter inside? (Further evidence of Trundles…)
Discovered a garment on the closet floor instead of on the hanger where you left it? (Irrefutable proof that a Trundle fashion show has taken place…)
Found only one sock in the dryer instead of the pair? (Sounds like your Trundle needed a sleeping bag for camp. Not to worry, your sock will be returned soon…)

If you are age 12 or younger, draw a picture of a Trundle and tell us how you know for sure that you have one in your house. (Hint: Did he finish your homework or fold your clothes while you slept?)

Your Guide to Trundletopia

Greetings from Clancy & Shayna, your Patrons of the Arfs and local Trundle authorities!

Here we are in an area barn, where we recently spotted a Trundle, trying to give us the slip!

In last week’s blog we discussed Trundles. Due to the overwhelming response, we’ve asked international authority and leading Trundologist,* Dean Morrissey, to elaborate a bit regarding some of their lesser-known traits.

According to Dean, although you may have never personally encountered one, odds are you have a Trundle or two under your own roof, but this is exceedingly difficult to verify as Trundles tend to avoid the spotlight.

Take for example, Billy Blue Sky and His Magical Bow Tie, discussed in last week’s blog. According to Dean, Billy is the embodiment of optimism. Yet he has absolutely nothing going for him in life except his attitude and his tie with which he can fly.

Billy is like the bumble bee; aerodynamically, he shouldn’t be able to fly. But like the bumblebee, no one has bothered to tell him, so Billy flies anyway. Said Dean, “Billy has no body, giant metal shoes and an empty head, but the boy’s got heart! The upbeat vibes emanating from such a roommate, even one who eschews the limelight, are bound to have an overall positive effect on those with whom he shares a residence.”

By now you probably have additional questions regarding Trundles, how they get into your home to do small favors, and how they manage to go undetected. The best advice we can give is to make plans to ask Dean Morrissey himself when he comes to Gallery One this holiday season. You can also view all of his new original artwork and latest giclées, and have him personalize his books and prints for the perfect holiday gifts.

Not only that, but you can take home your very own Trundle artwork!

Everyone loves an optimist; their outlook draws people to them. And after all the nasty political campaigns and bad news that bombards the airwaves daily, who wouldn’t welcome some optimism? GET READY FOR BUNDLES OF TRUNDLES!

Greetings from your devoted Gallery One Patrons of the Arfs, Clancy and Shayna, and two of our friends known as Push and Pull.

Push and Pull

Because you are a client of Gallery One, we have decided to let you in on a little-known secret before it makes the national headlines.

Now ask yourself, have you ever found your family dog barking at something that you cannot detect? He will stare intently at something unseen and unheard by you and bark with wild abandon. (And, when this happens, have you admonished him to quiet down, thinking that there is nothing there?)

Fear not, we understand that you cannot perceive many of the things that we dogs are able to detect. It’s just that our eyes, ears and wet noses are far more keen than those of our humans. A human typically has 5 million scent glands. Depending on our breed, we dogs have more than 125 million! We recognize moving objects better, and we also have the ability to see in low light. And us dogs can generally hear four times the distance of a human.

Now mind, this is not bragging. We are telling you this in order to illustrate the point of this week’s blog. Many times when we bark, it’s to tell you that we have spotted a Trundle (unbeknownst to you).

What, you ask, is a Trundle? Probably the human most knowledgeable about Trundles and their customs is artist Dean Morrissey. He is, as evidenced by his highly detailed artwork, an incredibly perceptive artist, and he has been seeing Trundles ever since he was a youngster. And having earned their trust over the years, he has been able to convince a number of them to pose for portraits, a feat previously unheard of. That Dean is certainly a charmer.

Trundles, he tells us, are magical little creatures that hide in plain sight. He explains: “Trundles inhabit homes and barns and shops in the real world. Preferring to stay out of sight, they sleep up in the eaves or in cabinet drawers. They are virtually invisible in a cluttered room.

“A fully-grown Trundle can stand up under a bed without hitting his head. Their purpose is a good one. They quietly go about helping their host in many ways. They sweep up in the middle of the night, secretly finish up bookkeeping, haul firewood and repair broken windows and leaky pipes. They are very appreciative of their hosts and become indispensable after a while. Very few people have actually seen a Trundle although many people have them as boarders. They are native to The Great Kettles, a magical Chain of Islands across the Sea of Time.”

Something artful to aMUSE you…

Greetings and salutations from Clancy, your humble Patron of the Arfs (and potential artist’s muse)!

As you undoubtedly know, dogs are considered man’s best friend, and rightfully so. Saint Bernards have traditionally warmed lost Alpine climbers with flasks of brandy. Dogs serve as seeing-eye dogs and provide assistance for a wide range of human conditions as emotional support animals. They search for bombs to keep people safe. And, it seems, dogs have often served as furry, four-legged muses to inspire artists; hence this week’s blog about famous artists who paint dogs. (Can you blame them?)

Take, for instance artist Pablo Picasso (1881 – 1973), who had many loves during his life. Aside from his multiple wives and assorted mistresses, Picasso loved dogs, one of whom was his Dalmatian “Perro” (Spanish for dog). Lump was Picasso’s cherished Dachshund. The artist is shown below with both dogs and an original drawing of Lump. He remarked: “It took me a whole lifetime to learn how to draw like a child again.” (Thanks, I’m sure, in no small part to Perro and Lump.)

Artist George Rodrigue (1944 – 2013) of Louisiana painted his famous Blue Dog series based on a photo of his late dog, Tiffany. Loyal pooch that she was, she sat beside the Cajun artist’s easel to keep him company as he painted late into the night. When viewing the Blue Dog paintings, people would often stare at its eyes and begin to cry. Rodrigue noted: “The yellow eyes are really the soul of the dog. He has this piercing stare. People say the dog keeps talking to them with his eyes, always saying something different.” Among the many philanthropic causes Rodrigue established is Blue Dog Relief, raising millions for humanitarian aid after both 9-11 and Hurricane Katrina.

Bessie Pease Gutmann (1876 – 1960) was an American artist and illustrator. Her husband, Hellmuth Gutmann and his brother, Bernard, had founded the fine art publishing company, Gutmann and Gutmann in New York in 1902. Bessie and Hellmuth married in 1906 and settled in South Orange, NJ. Setting up a studio in their home, Bessie painted their three little ones and became one of the era’s leading artists to portray the innocence of children. Her famous painting, In Disgrace, depicts her tearful toddler, Lucille, nose to the wall in utter shame. Teddy, Lucille’s puppy, longs to console her and snuggles her to share the blame, looking back at the viewer with an irresistibly sad expression.

Artist Jim Daly’s Tough Love presents a contrite little boy standing in the shadow of his mother. Her posture is stern, his remorseful. The empty glove suggests the missing baseball may be the culprit. The boy’s loyal dog is his ally, shielding him while sharing the blame. Writes Daly: “When I was a boy, I was in the doghouse more than once, and I believed that all of my troubles would be over when I grew up. Life's problems, however, are with us always, and when they seem to be overwhelming and impossible to overcome, there is no way of measuring the unconditional love of a friend.” (Especially a furry one with a cold, comforting nose!)

Canadian artist Michael Dumas painted Gypsy, inspired by a trip abroad:

“The subject for this piece was observed in the French city of Arles, just inside the entrance of a narrow side street that accessed the busy central square. In this relative calm and quiet location, the man seemed lost in thought, trusting his four-footed companion to warn him of the approach of strangers. The contrast between the man's contemplative mood and the dog's alertness interested me greatly, and in the painting I pushed the thread of this idea as far as I could. Placing the dog between any observer and his master, and with his gaze directed straight at the viewer, there is little doubt of the dog's unwavering diligence. As a last touch, I added an arched shadow into the area at upper right, hoping to enhance the idea of a protective space. This shape was inspired by observing its real-life counterpart in the many access points to the old Roman Coliseum just a few streets away.”

American pop artist Andy Warhol (1928 – 1987) took his dachshund, Archie, everywhere he went: out to dinner, to art show openings, and, of course, to his studio where he immortalized him for posterity in his own inimitable style.

American nostalgia artist Norman Rockwell (1894 – 1978) often painted dogs, making them central in his compositions because of the important role they play within families. His own dog, Pitter, hung out with him in the studio. Rockwell said, “If a picture wasn’t going very well, I’d put a puppy dog in it.” He recommended that other artists depict four-legged creatures “just as carefully and understandingly as you paint the people."

So if iconic artists such as those noted here derive so much inspiration from their furry companions, who am I to disagree? (And if any artists out there are reading this and would like to portray a certain handsome Lakeland Terrier and his sister, it can be easily arranged for a nominal fee of doggie treats and belly rubs. Just give my agent a call - kiss kiss!)

Shayna here. This week it’s MY turn to be the Blog Dog, so I decided to write about posters and how they relate to the history of modern art. (That’s why I am sporting my très chic Toulouse-Lautrec hat.)

Although stone lithography had been around since the late 1700s, it was a slow and expensive printing process. But everything changed just a century later with the introduction of the 3-stone lithographic process, making it possible to print an array of colors with the careful registration of just three basic colors - yellow, red and blue.

In France, Toulouse-Lautrec created the poster Moulin Rouge (shown above) and the poster craze took off. Posters grew in popularity and were used to symbolize national interests – the circus in the U.S., cabarets in France, bullfights in Spain, opera in Italy and so on. The ease of printing posters together with the ability to combine information and images in an appealing and economical manner helped to create the age of modern advertising. Posters were also used to promote political ideologies, special events or advertise products or services such as travel, sports, entertainment and popular personalities.

Dr. King encouraged her to stay on in the role saying, “You’re a part of history.” He told her she was a vital role model, and so Nichols continued playing Uhura in TV and films for another quarter century.)

Gallery Giclées Introduces Artist Elise Ondak

Clancy here, your humble Patron of the Arfs. Shayna and I are delighted to introduce our newest Gallery Giclées artist, Elise Ondak!

We both love her. Not only is she a talented artist, she is also a dog lover with two rescue dogs. (She has also rescued several cats, but we try not to hold that against her.)

Elise has been drawing and painting since childhood. While still in high school, she met and was mentored by artist Stanka Kordic. Encouraged by Kordic and her instructors to pursue her dream of a career in fine art, Elise went on to attend the Cleveland Institute of Art and has been painting ever since.

Her first Gallery Giclées release, The Path, captures the allure of the ocean.

Elise told us: "When I was painting The Path, I wished to represent not only a specific place and memory but the journeys each of us must travel throughout our lives. Standing on a path of sand, marked by the ever-fading footprints of those who traveled before us, we peer through the softly waving grasses to the inviting waters below. Although the destination is in sight, we must still walk the path to reach it."

Everyone sees something different when they contemplate The Path. Whether it recalls a memory or issues an invitation is up to the individual. As for me, I can picture myself chasing a Frisbee in the waves, and then shaking salt water all over Shayna.

Shayna, as always, has a different take: “The Path hypnotically draws you into its solitude, exuding a sense of peace. Alone with your thoughts, the rhythmic waves soothe the spirit. Clouds hint at storms to come, but the timeless ocean endures.”

Just like human fingerprints, no two giraffes have the same coat pattern. And, did you know, giraffes require more than 75 pounds of food a day, mostly leaves. And just like humans, giraffes have only seven vertebrae in their necks! (But in giraffes each vertebra is up to 10 inches long.)

Unlike other animals, scientists found that elephants have a greater sense of self-awareness and can recognize themselves in a mirror. In one study, an elephant named “Happy” repeatedly touched an ‘X’ painted on her forehead while looking in the mirror, indicating that she knew she was seeing her own reflection (and evidently approved of the make-up)!

Apes, such as gorillas and chimpanzees, are closely related to humans with 98% of their DNA being identical to Homo sapiens. They are also handy with tools, using sticks to retrieve insects and leaves to soak up drinking water. (This is true, despite Clancy’s protest: “If they’re so smart, where’s their tool belt?”)

King Penguins have the amazing ability to dive 1,600 feet! They can remain underwater for up to five minutes when hunting for fish. Their favorite food is the lantern fish, but they also nosh on small fish, krill, squid and various crustaceans.

This season’s wildfires are some of the worst ever seen. In addition to the many homes that have been lost to the spreading flames, countless animals have been injured and displaced. To date, the ASPCA has rescued and sheltered more than 2500 animals in Northern California alone. When a call goes out, an animal disaster response team assists local agencies in the rescue and emergency sheltering of dogs, cats, birds and livestock. Just this past Monday, police rushed in to rescue 60 dogs and cats from a shelter in Vacaville, CA, that was directly in the path of the rapidly moving Nelson Fire. Thankfully, everyone made it out in time, smoky, but safe. The rescued animals are currently in foster care.

Animals rescued from the wildfires are examined and treated by veterinarians. This life-saving work is made possible by the donations of caring people. And because these scared and injured animals can’t ask for your help, we’re doing it for them.

ONCE UPON A TIME, THERE LIVED A MOST EXTRAORDINARY ARTIST…

At the end of a day spent greeting Gallery guests and begging for treats, one of our favorite things to do is to pile on top of our folks’ bed and demand a bedtime story! Like most kids, we love to imagine the kings and queens, enchanted castles, brave knights and beautiful princesses of our favorite fairy tales. We get all caught up in the magic of ‘once upon a time’ and picture ourselves surrounded by castle turrets and fairy Godmothers.

Art does the same thing. Without words, it can pull you into its magic, instantly capturing your imagination. And that’s what artist Scott Gustafson does so well. His colorful, enchanting paintings of stories passed down through the ages transport you to the land of long ago and far away.

Originally, Scott wanted to be an animator. Over the years he accepted commissions as a freelance illustrator for Celestial Seasonings, Playboy, Saturday Evening Post, The Bradford Exchange and DreamWorks. But Scott loved to tell stories with his art, eventually coming to the realization that being an illustrator is “about the best job there is.”

In 2015, Scott Gustafson was recognized as being one of the best illustrators there is. He won the Grand Master Award from Spectrum Fantastic Art Live, an organization that celebrates and promotes fantastic art, its creators and the creative community. And we are delighted to announce that Gallery Giclées has just released four fabulous images by this celebrated artist!

Hello again! We’re your humble Patrons of the Arfs, Clancy & Shayna, with more about the “past lives” of some well-known artists. Read the descriptions below and see if you can identify them!

In Another Life…

This artist studied Biology in college. Her courses gave her an immense appreciation and deep respect for the power of living things as seen in the individual cells of plants and animals.

Although she earned her BS, she chose not to pursue science as a career, but instead went on to earn her Master’s in Art History. Today, her fascination with the transformative nature of flowers is evident in her radiant paintings. Using an Old Master’s technique, she layers oil glazes over an opaque underpainting. She says: “There is something truly celebratory about flowers in sunlight. Light invests them with energy and liveliness. Their transitory nature makes the moment an occasion that deserves to be savored and remembered with attention and care, drama and boldness.”

She has won numerous awards and honors for her resplendent artwork. In addition to being a fulltime artist, she also teaches art and has authored the book, Classic Still Life Painting.

The dimensions of this artist’s work were as vast as the wild, wind-swept plains of the West, as infinite as outer space and as small as the historic scenes that he captured on more than 30 postage stamps for the U.S. Postal Service.

A master of both oils and the pencil, he depicted the mountain men and trappers of the American West with the same sense of history that had guided his hand when he and seven other artists were invited to illustrate early space missions for NASA’s Fine Art Program. Wanting more than a factual record of events, these artists were told: “NASA is commissioning your imagination… Artists should be key witnesses to history in the making…the truth seen by an artist is more meaningful than any other type of record.”

Although diverse in subject matter, all of his paintings had a central theme in common: man at the threshold of a new, unknown frontier. This artist, who painted Neil Armstrong’s boot stepping into the dust of the lunar surface, also painted those largely forgotten and unsung heroes, the North American trappers of the early 1800's, who blazed trails through lonely mountains and along unknown waterways.

He stated: “I find my inspiration in all the life that surrounds and envelops me, from the evolution of man and his works, to the timelessness of the rocks, the trees, of man, his land, the sky and the sea.”

Who was this artist?

Born in Great Britain, this artist was a pilot in the Royal Air Force during WWII, where he met his wife, an American nurse.

After the war, he came to the U.S. at the invitation of Walt Disney to work as a matte painter, creating elaborate backgrounds on glass in front of which the live action was filmed. Once the scene was shot, the glass was washed down to be reused for other scenes. He also created Oscar-winning special effects, such as the wavy smoke staircase seen above, in his recreation of Edwardian London for the Walt Disney classic, Mary Poppins. The artist left “holes” in the paint, through which he shined light to give the impression of nightfall with lights twinkling on throughout the city.

As a fine artist, his paintings and prints of powerful panoramic landscapes and seashores express both the magnitude and the delicacy of nature. He called his method of painting "impressionistic shorthand," referring to his use of broad brushstrokes to give the impression of detail. Can you name this legendary artist?

In Another Life…

Life sometimes has a way of diverting us from our presumed course into new, unexpected directions. Shana and I are prime examples of this. Before my tenure at Gallery One, my former human had a demanding schedule and couldn’t devote as much time as she wanted to me, so she found me loving parents who would spoil me rotten. Shayna, on the other hand, was an outside dog from New York. She was ignored most of the time, and was not receptive to affectionate humans or even other dogs. But somehow, over time, our paths all became interwoven for the better. Go figure.

Life has also taken some unexpected twists and turns for the following artists. See if you can name them:

This artist once considered becoming a professional boxer. (Had he done so, there would be countless broken noses and bare walls left in his wake.)

“I dropped out of high school and joined the Army. I was stationed in Panama and spent my last year on the boxing team. My dad was a boxer when he was young, and he taught us [my brother and me] boxing from the time we were five or six years old. I was always walking around throwing left jabs into the air. (I still do when no one is watching.) When I got out of the service I thought seriously about becoming a professional boxer, but decided to go to art school instead.”

Who am I?

This artist spent a decade as an electrical power lineman by day, painting by night (thanks, in no small part, to the wonders of electricity).

“I have been making pictures and telling stories my whole life. As a kid, I worked along with my brothers for my father who was a carpenter, and I seriously thought about taking that direction, but I loved to draw and cartoon. At 20 I went to work as a Power Lineman for Edison. I would stay up all night, draw and paint, then go to work. Eventually this became untenable so I quit the paying job in favor of this great unknown – illustration. I went to New York to seek my fortune. Eventually I worked as a freelancer for 18-20 publishers. I consider this whole illustration period as my art school. I had lots of ideas for stories to illustrate, and so I decided to write and illustrate my own children's book.”

(It became a best seller.) Who am I?

This artist did a portrait for fellow artist Robert Bateman as a gift. (Wait until you see where it ended up!)

“I’ve taught workshops at The Norman Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge, MA. My portrait of internationally known wildlife artist Robert Bateman is on permanent display at The Robert Bateman Centre in Victoria, BC.” Who am I?

HAVE AN ARTFUL 4^TH OF JULY!

Like most Americans, Shana and I LOVE patriotic holidays like the 4^th of July (except for the really loud fireworks; those are scary). However, I digress. We love the cook-outs and those hot dogs that magically “roll” off the grill...we enjoy the songs and get-togethers. Our celebrations with family and friends are made even more festive by art that captures the true American spirit as best symbolized by that grand lady, the Statue of Liberty. (And, to paraphrase lyrics from the American musical, Damn Yankees: “You gotta have ‘art,’ all you really need is ‘art!’”)

ARTFUL IDEAS FOR SUMMER FUN

Clancy here. Ah, summer! Shana and I just saw our first lightning bug of the season last night! Twinkling at dusk, just as the street lights came on, they signal the longer days to come. And the longer days of summer make it the perfect time to get everyone outdoors and get creative!

If you’re looking for ways to stimulate your kids’ creativity now that school is out, we have some fun projects that you can try. Best of all, the family dog can participate! (Now everyone can have fun!)

PET POSIES

Dip your pup’s paw in pet-safe paint, then gently press the paw on paper. Have the kids paint stems and leaves. Add a frame, and you have a great gift for grandparents!

“SHE SELLS SEASHELLS…”

If you have a collection of white seashells gathered from vacation, you have lots of little blank canvases from which to work. (Or get a bag of shells from your craft store as well as some washable kid’s paint, and let the kids paint the shells.) When the paint has dried, the shells can be glued to magnets, wreathes, barrettes, etc. Or use their natural color to enhance flower pots and picture frames.

WIND SONG

Gather the kids and grab the dog for a walk in the woods. Collect pine cones and sticks you find along the way. You’ll also need small screw eyes and twine or yarn. You can paint the sticks with craft paint for extra color. Attach a screw eye to the end of each stick or pine cone. Thread yarn or twine through the screw eyes, and tie them to a stick. Hang on your porch or in a tree and watch them dance in the breeze.

A 21-Bark Salute to a Great American, Alan Bean

Shayna and I have the coolest parents ever. They know EVERYBODY. You wouldn’t believe all the artists who have scratched our ears over the years! They even hosted famed astronaut/artist Alan Bean twice at Gallery One, but that was before our time. And although we never got to meet Alan Bean in person, Shayna and I frequently sat in Dad’s office as the two Alans chatted over the phone.

Recently, Dad told us all about Bean and what an interesting life he had led. Bean grew up in Texas near an airbase. Art and aviation were his chief interests. During World War II he decided he wanted to be a pilot. But during his free time, he took classes in oil painting. In 1962, Alan Bean (known to his fellow pilots as “Beano”) applied to join an elite group of test pilots called “astronauts” saying, "I thought it might be even more fun than flying airplanes."

After completing a year of training, rookie astronauts receive a silver pin. When Bean first set foot on the moon, he tossed his own silver pin into a crater commenting afterwards, “I often think of it at night when I look up at the moon."

After Bean left NASA, he turned his attention to art so that he could record what he had seen first-hand as one of only 12 humans to ever set foot on the moon. For added authenticity and ruggedness, he created his original paintings on a type of plywood typically used to make aircraft frames. Bean would add impressions to the paint using the boots he wore during his moonwalks and the hammer he used to erect the American flag on the lunar surface.

In 1988, Bean published a book of his work entitled Apollo: An Eyewitness Account by Astronaut/Explorer Artist/Moonwalker. In the introduction fellow astronaut John Glenn wrote, "He saw the same monochromatic world as the other astronauts, yet with an artist's eye he also saw intrinsic beauty in the rocks and boulders and their textures and shapes."

In recent years, Alan Bean and his wife, Leslie, shared their Texas home with seven lucky Lhasa Apso dogs. So some night, when the moon is bright, if you should hear barking off in the distance, please disregard it. It’s only us, saying hello to an old friend…

What’s the difference? PLENTY!

Shayna & Clancy here. Are you familiar with “The Starfish Story”? Allow us to explain:

An elderly man, walking along the shore, observed a young boy up ahead, throwing something into the ocean. As the man watched, the boy would pick up up small objects in the sand and then hurl them into the sea. When the man drew closer, he saw that they were starfish, so he asked the boy to explain. The boy said that the tide was out, the sun was coming up, and if he didn’t throw the starfish back into the water, they would die. The man said, “But there are miles of beach and hundreds of starfish. You can’t possibly make a difference.” As the boy listened, he stooped down to pick up yet another starfish. Throwing it into the sea, he turned to the man and replied, “It made a difference to that one.”

Shayna and I were both rescued, and believe me, it made a BIG difference to us.

Individually, each of us has within us the power to make a difference, and when we join forces, we can do even more. As Gallery One’s official Patrons of the Arfs, we invite you to celebrate National “Be Kind to Animals Week” with us.

* Marilyn’s Voice rescues dogs from dire circumstances, rehabilitates and re-homes them. It was named in honor of Marilyn, a tiny breeder dog rescued from a puppy mill where she had undergone a “de-barking” procedure to silence her (a cruel but common puppy mill practice). Complications from that procedure led to Marilyn’s untimely death, but not before she had become a certified therapy dog who brought cheer into the lives of the many patients and nursing home residents with whom she empathized. The volunteers of Marilyn's Voice have made it their mission to become her “voice” and the voice of other mistreated dogs by working to end Ohio’s cruel puppy mill industry and by rescuing, fostering and permanently re-homing dogs in need. I WAS FRAMED!

My sidekick, Shayna, and I were hard at work when a dame came into the gallery with a sad story we hear all too often. She had used some framing coupons from a craft store.
