Drew Barrymore has always been proud of her curves, but in 2004 she realized she needed to workout and diet to feel healthy. She lost 20 lbs. and six years later, Drew has proven it is possible to lose weight and keep it off while following a reasonable diet and workout routine. To see Drew’s results for yourself, check her out in her latest film, Everybody’s Fine, which released on DVD this Tuesday.

Drew has never been a fan of Hollywood the fad diet, and finds that sensible, sustainable eating leads to long-term weight loss. Prior to 2004, Drew says, “I was a full vegetarian, living on carbs.” Now, “I eat more protein. If I want that pasta, I’m gonna have it though! I don’t eat a ton of meat, but if my body needs some, then I’ll eat it. When I don’t feel good about myself, I’ll eat healthier or eat a little less.” Drew eats three meals per day, consisting mostly of organic fruit and vegetables. Drew also drinks a lot of water and takes vitamin C, which keeps her skin looking luminous.

Although a vegetarian diet wasn’t right for Drew, check out other stars, including Olivia Wilde and Kristen Bell, who say a diet without meat helps them stay slim and feel healthy. The USDA also has some helpful tips for creating a healthy, balanced vegetarian diet.

Drew’s diet helped her lose weight, but Drew feels the most important change was adding exercise to her weekly routine. Drew says, “I didn’t exercise before, but ever since I started, my body has really changed.” She jokes, “it turns out those people who say exercise is good for you are right. I hate that!” Drew’s favorite workout is running because she finds it an outlet. She runs about five miles, three days per week. Drew also enjoys the Bar Method, a workout combining yoga, pilates, and other exercises. Finally, Drew enjoys walking, biking, dancing, swimming, and even mini-golf. ”It doesn’t matter how you raise a sweat,” she says, “so long as you have fun doing it!”

Adam Levine of Maroon 5 uses yoga to relieve back pain. Six yoga moves to relieve back pain.

People do yoga for countless reasons. Specifically, Adam Levine of Maroon 5 uses yoga to relieve back pain. Here are the moves he told Women’s Health that helped with his back. Try these out to relieve any tension or pain in your back – or simply try these out for a good stretch. You can do this set of moves on its own or before/after your workout.

Move #1 – Bent-Knee Forward Bend

With knees hip-width apart and with knees bent, fold at the waist grabbing your opposite elbows and letting your head hang. Hold for 2-5 minutes until you feel your back begin to release.

Move #2 – Dog/Cat Tilts on Hands And Knees

With fingers spread and arms strongly engaged, inhale, then arch your lower back gently and look upward, moving into the “dog’’ position. As you exhale, round your back (like a cat) and look at your navel to stretch out the back and spine as much as is comfortable.

Move #3 – Flat Back Position

Slightly Bent. From standing position, bend your knees slightly and fold at the waist until your back is parallel to the ground. Hold your arms out to the sides to give your back some strength resistance. Imagine that you are holding an orange under your chin and draw your abdomen up towards your spine to create as flat a back as possible. Come back to standing with straight legs. Do this exercise 5 times for a 10-20 second flat back hold each time.

Move #4 – Cobra

Lying on your stomach with your hands underneath your shoulders, inhale and lift your head and torso up off the mat into a cobra backbend. (Your abdomen and lower body stay down.) Keep your elbows in at your waist, your chin into your chest, and your shoulders down. Hold the LAST cobra for 5 breaths, but use the first 4 cobras as a full spinal and back warm-up. As you exhale, lower back down until your forehead touches your mat. Repeat 5 times.

Move #5 – Superman

Lying on your stomach, extend your arms out in front of you and lift your legs behind you. Keep the insides of your feet touching and turn your palms to face each other. Now lift your right arm and your left leg. Hold the first diagonal extension on the right and left side for 5 seconds each side, then hold for one count with strong and proper form. Switch by lifting your left arm and your right leg. Repeat ten times, extending through the arm and back through the leg to create a deep diagonal stretch and strengthening across your back.

Move #6 – Spinal Twist

Lying on your back, hug your right knee into your chest and hold for 2 minutes, then lower your right knee to the left side of your body and turn your head and right arm to the right until you feel a deep stretch across the lower back. Fully exhale and release, holding for 2-5 minutes. Switch sides.

Kim Cattrall, who plays Samantha Jones on Sex and the City, explains her sexy anti-aging diet.

Kim Cattrall is well known as Samantha Jones, the ultimate cougar on the mega-hit HBO series Sex and the City. Although Kim is the sexiest lady the city, she is also the oldest. At age 53, Kim Cattrall provides inspiration for young and old alike, proving that you can stay hot despite your years. Check out Kim in her latest film, The Ghost Writer, which premiers in theaters this weekend.

When it comes to working out, Kim enjoys the overall toning effect of Pilates. More specifically, Kim enjoys Gyro-lates, which is a combination of machine-based Pilates, yoga, dance, swimming, and t’ai chi. Kim also says, “I do easy exercises to lose weight, as much as I can. If I don’t exercise, I feel sluggish. I try to do 30 minutes a day. If I can’t get to a gym, I walk. I find it a release.”

Despite Kim’s workout routine, there is no substitute for a healthy diet when it comes to looking young. Eating healthily improves skin, hair, weight, and overall energy levels. Kim eats a diet of about 2,000 calories per day. She eats vegetables with every meal and drinks plenty of tea, which is known for its anti-aging antioxidants. She also eats healthy oils from sources such as olive oil and fish. When Kim needs to drop a few extra pounds, she says “I stop the bread and alcohol.”

Check out a typical daily diet in the life of Kim Cattrall, as provided to People magazine:

It’s Fitness Week on the popular morning talk show Live with Regis and Kelly, so today we are looking at what the extremely fit co-host Killy Ripa does to keep her body in tip-top shape. Her secret…Physique 57.

An hour long group fitness class, Physigue 57 aims to sculpt muscles by combining Pilates, ballet, and traditional calisthenics. The class is fast paced and uses a combination of dumbbell and isometric moves.

“I’m totally hooked on this sculpting class I discovered at [New York City gym] Physique 57,” Ripa told Fitness. “It has transformed my body in ways I never thought possible.”

“I saw a difference physically within five classes,” said Ripa, who does the Physique 57 workouts at least four times a week. “I’m a short person, but I’m becoming longer and leaner. The class works your glutes, your abs, and your obliques. It’s all about building muscle, then stretching it out. I’ve never been addicted to something like this.”

Ripa rarely takes a day off, and also runs at least three miles per day, five days a week.

Physique 57 now has three DVDs available so you too can get ripped like Ripa in the comfort of your own home.

For a sample workout from Physique 57 keep reading…

Paul Bettany's workout to prepare for Legion.

A self-described “beer and bread man,” Paul Bettany recently transformed his body into a ripped machine for his role in the upcoming thriller Legion in which he plays the humanity-saving archangel Michael.

Bettany changed his diet to include small meals of lean meat and vegetables, while eating every 4 hours. This diet helped ensure that Bettany’s metabolism, and thus his body’s fat-burning ability, was running at full throttle all-day long. In addition, such a diet ensures that insulin, and thus energy levels, are always in check.

Bettany also hired trainer Mike Hood to run him through circuit training workouts 5 days per week. Hood says, “The idea was to blast his body. We didn’t do a lot of cardio. The heart rate was elevated throughout the workout. He was never sitting around.” Essentially the circuit training routine replaced Bettany’s cardio needs, while also creating more muscle, which further increased his metabolism and body’s fat-burning ability.

Here is Bettany’s circuit workout, courtesy of the February 2010 issue of Men’s Fitness:

Core Exercises

20 Hanging Leg Lifts (with ankle weights)

30 Rope Crunches

30 Ab Wheel Rollouts

20 Back Extensions

Complete the core phase of the workout with as little rest as possible between exercises before moving on to the main circuit.

Circuit Training

Smith Machine Bench Press

Incline Press

Lat Pulldown

One-Arm Push Press

Barbell Curl

Tricep Overhead Extension

Complete 3 rounds of the circuit. Do 15 reps of each exercise. Jump rope for 2 minutes, as an active recovery, in between rounds.

You can see Bettany in Legion in theaters nationwide starting tonight (January 22, 2010).

“This is what I’ve got to do. I’ve got to really encourage people about their fitness,” said Harvey. We always make these resolutions at the beginning of the year. And so I was trying to encourage my listeners to get fit so I said ‘well first you’ve got to lead by example.’”

In an effort to lose 25 pounds Harvey plans to ride a stationary bike during his 4 hour radio show every day for the next 3 months.

This is not Harvey’s first foray into the fitness world.

Just after turning 50 he teamed up with former Mr. Olympia Lee Haney to launch is “50 and Fly” campaign. Steve told Men’s Fitness about his plans for a DVD, book and website detailing his transformation using Haney’s diet and workout plan, and “encouraging men ages 40 and older to tone up, slim down, eat right, and, most importantly, stop using age as an excuse to let themselves go.”

Haney put Harvey through a circuit training program using functional movements (exercises that simulate real-life movement) and followed 2 main directives:

1. “Eat for what you’re about to do, not what you’ve done.” (Translation: if you’re about to work out, eat carbs; if you’re about to go to sit on your butt, eat a small meat-and-vegetables-only meal.)

2. “Stimulate, Don’t Annihilate.” (Translation: You don’t have to tear up your muscles to see results.)

We like Haney’s program much better than Steve’s current bike riding binge. Studies have shown that circuit training or high intensity interval training (HIIT) is a quicker way to burn fat and increase health then steady-state cardio.

However, we certainly won’t discourage anyone from being active and we fully support Harvey in his efforts to get people motivated to be fit.

23-year-old R&B star Rihanna has been lighting up stages across the world this summer on her Loud tour. But Rihanna has been attracting attention offstage as well, most recently with her controversial Tweet about her shoot for Esquire Magazine: “I shot my first cover yesterday with Russell James… not much preparation: just wax and starve!” Fans were shocked or outraged, tweeting back, “That’s a bad message for your fans” and “What kind of role model are you?” While many concede that it most likely was a joke, Rihanna hasn’t publicly addressed the issue. Earlier in the year, however, Rihanna did address the topic of body image – declaring that she has learned to love her curves.

Rihanna has always been known as having one of most envied bodies in Hollywood – fit, but still shapely and not rail thin. Since she isn’t starving herself, here’s how she’s really staying in such great shape: “a lot of hard work.” Diet-wise, the singer says, “Carbs are the enemy!” She usually eats egg whites and pineapple for breakfast, fish and potatoes for lunch, and more fish for dinner. “I hate vegetables, but I make myself eat them,” she says.

As for her toned legs and slim waist, Rihanna says, “Cardio is key. I lift weights, but I don’t want my legs to bulk up, so I do a lot of cardio.” Rihanna’s personal trainer and owner of Gotham Global Fitness, Ary Nunez, also helps the singer keep her workouts new and exciting. “Rihanna gets bored, so I gotta keep it fresh,” says Ary. Here are 3 general tips Ary uses when working with Rihanna, as shared with Vogue, that you can adapt to your own workouts:

1. Listen to your body.
Nuñez emphasizes that your body will not respond physically if you’re not giving it what it’s asking for. “I’m working with an individual—it’s like we’re sparring, we’re reading each other,” she says. “If Rihanna comes in and has an enormous burst of energy, we’re going to work with that energy. If she’s coming in and is exhausted from work, then the workout focus changes to ‘How can I restore you, so you can be up and working again tomorrow?’”

2. Keep it fresh.
Nunez combines her knowledge of martial arts, dance, and calisthenics to keep Rihanna interested. The biggest muscle is the brain. “Every minute, every second is different,” says Nuñez.

3. Know what you’re training for.
“If we’re training for a tour, we work on stamina, so she’s able last for 2–3 hours on a stage,” she says. But the workout changes if Rihanna is preparing for a movie role or the red carpet. You build a workout around a goal.

These tips will help you on the path towards a rockstar body like Rihanna’s in no time!

Pink likes taking her fitness to the extreme saying, “I do trapeze, flipping motorcycles, bungee jumping, skydiving. All kinds of stuff just to get me pumped. I love it.” On how she is able to perform and do the trapeze act at the same time, Pink told Women’s Health, “I have to be able to run up those stairs as many times as I do and be able to sing at the same time. I’m an asthmatic. I have to be on that treadmill singing to get my lungs right.”

Pink also does P90X and yoga to keep her body in peak condition.

Check out more video and pics of Pink over at Women’s Health.

Olivia Wilde, star of the Fox medical drama House, diet and workout allow her to eat right, stay balanced, and keep her body in shape.

When the Fox medical drama House returns tonight, loyal fans will tune in to catch-up with their favorite sexy doctor, played by actress Olivia Wilde. As one of the sexiest doctors on TV, her diet and workout allow Olivia Wilde to eat right, stay balanced, and keep her body in top form.

When it comes to diet, Olivia is a self-described “sort-of vegetarian who eats fish.” Although she rebuffs meat, and avoids bread and pasta as much as possible, she does not always succeed. Avoiding bread and pasta is especially difficult due to her Italian husband, Tao. Additionally, cheese and good wine are staples in their Venice Beach loft.

Although it sounds as if Olivia Wilde follows a strict diet, she tries to keep up a relaxed approach to eating. Olivia says, “I don’t own a scale, and Tao banned the word fat from our house.” “If we eat too much, we say, ‘I feel clogged up.’” When following any diet, it is important to maintain a healthy attitude towards food. Creating too much pressure can eventually cause unhealthy eating habits followed by guilt or remorse.

As for maintaining her slim, healthy body, Olivia tries to workout daily. She enjoys spinning at a studio near her Venice Beach home, but laughs because she is so close to an outdoor workout at the beach. “I make fun of it, but it’s amazing, because you have to push yourself through this resistance, which is so therapeutic,” she says. “And they say you can burn nearly 800 calories in, like, 45 minutes if you push it to the highest level.” However, her workout is not limited to the gym. Her workout routine also includes yoga, karate, and hiking with her dogs Lola and Paco.

As long as Olivia Wilde continues to diet and workout like this, she will continue being one of the sexiest doctors on TV.

Gerard Butler gives tips for getting a chiseled mid-section. Part 4 of the All-Star Abs series.

Gerard Butler, actor

Secret: Add weight to the bar and work your core from different angles.

How to do it…

Use heavy weight and do challenging compound exercises such as the squat or deadlift. These moves engage your core and burn more calories than isolation exercises, helping you to shred fat and reveal your abs.

Butler’s trainer recommends this ab workout at the end of a gym session:

Hanging leg raises – 3 sets of 10 to 15 reps

Planks - 3 sets, holding for a minimum of 30 seconds, but try to add more time each session

We expect to see Butler team up with a trainer again as recent pictures have revealed he has lost his ripped look. Perhaps he will go back to the 300 Workout to prepare for his next flick.

Spartacus: Blood and Sand premiered on Starz in January 2010. As promised, here is a detailed look at The Spartacus Workout by Men’s Health, which was used to prepare Andy Whitfield and others for Spartacus: Blood and Sand.

Directions

Perform 1 set of each “station” in succession for 60 seconds (doing as many reps with perfect form as possible) using a weight that’s challenging for 15 to 20 reps. Give yourself 15 seconds to move between stations. Rest for 2 minutes after you’ve completed 1 circuit of all 10 stations. Repeat 2 more times for a total of 3 circuits.

Do this 3 times per week with at least one day off in between each workout. Tip: If you can’t go the entire 60 seconds, rest a few seconds and then resume until time is up.

Station 1: Goblet Squat

Grab a dumbbell and hold it vertically in front of your chest, with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.[A] Keeping your back naturally arched, push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower your body until the tops of your thighs are at least parallel to the floor.[B] Pause, then push yourself back up to the start. If that’s too hard, do a bodyweight squat instead. Tip: Lower your hips as deep as you can.

Station 2: Mountain Climber

Assume a pushup position with your arms completely straight. Your body should form a straight line from your head to your ankles.[A] Without allowing your lower-back posture to change, lift your foot off the floor and slowly raise your knee toward your chest.[B] Return to the starting position, and repeat with your left leg, alternating back and forth each repetition. Tip: Lift your leg as if you’re climbing a mountain.

Station 3: Single-Arm Dumbbell Swing

Grab a dumbbell with an overhand grip and hold it in front of your waist at arm’s length. Keeping your lower back slightly arched, bend at your hips and knees and swing the dumbbell between your legs.[A] Keeping your arm straight, thrust your hips forward, straighten your knees, and swing the dumbbell up to shoulder level as you rise to standing position.[B] Now swing the weight back and forth. At the 30-second mark, switch arms. Tip: Use momentum to swing your arm up.

Station 4: T-Pushup

Grasp a pair of hex dumbbell handles and set yourself in pushup position, your arms straight.[A] Then bend your elbows and lower your body until your chest nearly touches the floor.[B] As you push yourself back up, lift your right hand and rotate the right side of your body up as you raise the dumbbell straight over your shoulder until your body forms a T.[C] Reverse the move, then repeat on your right side.

Station 5: Split Jump

Stand in a staggered stance with your feet about 2 to 3 feet apart, your left in front of your right. Keeping your torso upright, bend your legs and lower your body into a lunge.[A] Now quickly switch directions and jump with enough force to propel both feet off the floor.[B] While in the air, scissor-kick your legs so you land with the opposite leg forward.[C] Repeat, alternating back and forth each repetition.

Station 6: Dumbbell Row

Grab a pair of dumbbells, bend at your hips (don’t round your lower back) and lower your torso until it’s almost parallel to the floor. Let the dumbbells hang at arm’s length from your shoulders.[A] Without moving your torso, row the dumbbells upward by raising your upper arms, bending your elbows and squeezing your shoulder blades together.[B] Pause, then lower the dumbbells back to start. Tip: Pull the weights to your sides.

Station 7: Dumbbell Side Lunge & Touch

Grab a pair of dumbbells and hold them at arm’s length next to your sides.[A] Lift your left foot and take a big step to your left as you push your hips backward and lower your body by dropping your hips and bending your knees. As you lower your body, bend forward at your hips and touch the dumbbells to the floor.[B] Do all your reps with your left leg, then repeat with your right. If that’s too hard, do the same move without the dumbbells; simply reach for the floor with your hands. Tip: Your toes should point forward.

Station 8: Pushup Position Row

Grasp a pair of hex dumbbell handles and set yourself in pushup position, your arms straight.[A] Keeping your core stiff, row the dumbbell in your right hand to the side of your chest, by pulling it upward and bending your arm.[B] Pause, then lower the dumbbell back down quickly, and repeat the same movement with your left arm. Tip: Don’t allow your torso to rotate as you row.

Station 9: Dumbbell Lunge and Rotation

Grab a dumbbell and hold it vertically in front of your chest, with your feet slightly wider than shoulder-width apart.[A] Keeping your back naturally arched, push your hips back, bend your knees, and lower your body until the tops of your thighs are at least parallel to the floor.[B] Pause, then push yourself back up to the start. If that’s too hard, do a bodyweight squat instead. Tip: Bend your front knee 90 degrees.

Station 10: Dumbbell Push Press

Stand holding a pair of dumbbells just outside of your shoulders, with your arms bent and palms facing each other. Set your feet should be shoulder-width apart, your knees slightly bent; dip your knees,[A] then explosively push up with your legs as you press the weights straight over your shoulders.[B] Lower the dumbbells back to the starting position and repeat.

Channing Tatum uses a circuit training program and eats high protein meals to maintain a lean, muscular physique.

Dear John, the Nicholas Sparks romance adapted for the big screen, knocked the blockbuster sci-fi hit Avatar from its number one spot while taking in 30.5 million on its opening weekend. With Channing Tatum taking the lead in the hottest new film in the U.S. let’s take a look at his workout and diet regimen.

Tatum’s Workout:

“With Channing, we followed a 3 day on 1 day off cycle with each session consisting of high intensity, calisthenic based full body circuit workouts which lasted no more than 30 minutes each. We used absolutely NO machines, simply dumbbells, a medicine ball, and a jump rope!” says Tatum’s trainer, William Harris.

Day 1 (5 sets for time as fast as possible)

10 Pullups, 30 Kettlebell swings, 50 Walking lunges

Day 2 (7 sets for time as fast as possible)

150 Rope Skips, 15 Clean and Jerks

Day 3 (3 sets done as fast as possible)

100 Mountain Climbers, 75 Pushups, 50 Situps, 25 Box Jumps

Day 4

Rest

“Notice how over the course of a 3 day cycle every major muscle group was targeted, however we did ZERO isolation moves. While Channing’s workouts did systematically allow for proper cycles of work, rest, and recovery, there was not a set “routine”. Routine is the enemy! I say that because in order to maintain consistent change and progress, you can not allow the body to plateau,” says Harris.

Channing’s Diet:

Harris says, “I think the key to success with regards to dietary habits is the restoration of simplicity and understanding the function of the foods you eat. I believe most people put too large of an emphasis on counting calories and complete restriction of certain foods and too little emphasis on the quality and quantity of the foods they eat, which in the long run is what causes failure.”

This is a sample day for Tatum:

Breakfast – veggie omelet, multigrain toast, Morningstar vegetarian sausage patties, and orange slices.

AM snack – apple slices and unsalted mixed nuts.

Lunch - grilled bbq chicken breast, spinach, and a sweet potato.

Afternoon snack – string cheese and unsalted mixed nuts.

Dinner – a turkey burger, broccoli, and carrots.

PM snack – yogurt and unsalted almonds (and a jell-o cup if something sweet was desired).

Harris continued to say, “He simply ate a clean and well balanced diet. Again, that’s not exactly what he ate every day, but that was the basis of his diet. Channing also ate whole wheat pizza topped with grilled chicken and broccoli, turkey lasagna made with multi-grain pasta and specially made sauces and cheeses, turkey bacon cheeseburgers with sweet potato fries, and other specially made dishes which broke up the monotony and made his diet enjoyable…which is also a key component of maintaining healthy eating habits. It’s all about learning to season your foods without loading them up with salt, sugar, and excess calories.”

Tatum’s exercise and diet routine originally appeared on gohealthygofit.com as a guest blog by his trainer William Harris. Harris, who founded Billion Dollar Bodies, Inc. and BDB Fit Camp has several other free workout routines available on his site.

Mac Danzig takes on Justin Buchholz tonight at UFC 109 in Las Vegas. MMA fighters, especially UFC fighters, are some of the fittest athletes in the world. Hard to believe, but Mac is able to maintain his lifestyle through a vegan diet. Mac Danzig talks about his diet in one of his blog posts:

Brown Rice: One of my main sources of complex carbs along with Oatmeal… I buy the ‘microwave in the bag’ frozen brown rice from Trader Joe’s… It’s pretty easy to make and can be added to almost any meal. Wild Rice (actually a grass seed) is even better if you can get a hold of it.

Portobello mushrooms: These are great. Good protein source, low calories, low sodium… Can be sauteed or stir-fried with vegetables. I eat many of these when cutting weight.

Tempeh: This is a Tofu-based food and a good source of protein and fiber… Although a little bitter when eaten plain, I find that some flavorings can really make this good…

Quinoa: This grain is sometimes a chore to cook, and if you live in the middle of nowhere, it might be hard to find, but it’s a great source of not only carbs and protein, but fiber as well. This is one of the most nutritionally complete foods out there with a full, balanced set of amino acids…

Black Beans, lentils, etc: Really, many Mexican foods I find to be pretty substantial as long as there’s some beans and rice in it… Lentils are great in soup and have some decent protein and fiber…

Drinks: I drink water 99.9% of the time… Rarely do I ever feel the need for soft drinks or juices, although I might add some orange juice to a protein shake to make it taste better…I drink in excess of 1.5 gallons of H2O per day when I’m training hard and about 1 gallon per day on the regular.

Wheat: My diet is not “wheat-free” but I do my best to avoid it… It’s an allergen (mild for most people) and not as easily digested you might think… Every now and then I have something that has wheat gluten in it as well… I’m not really into sandwiches, so bread is easy to avoid. I do eat pasta every once in a while and I might have some wheat tortillas, but if I had my choice of carbs, it’d be brown rice or quinoa. On a side note, they have come out with some good rice-based pastas that are identical to normal wheat pastas in every way.

Fake meat products: These are usually geared towards people making the change to vegetarianism and are made to mimic various meat products… I usually don’t mess with these all that much, with the exception of “riblets” made by Gardenburger brand… Most of the stuff out there doesn’t taste anything like meat to me (unless it’s seitan) and I don’t need my food to. Unfortunately, if you live in the midwest, or any place who’s stores haven’t adapted to vegetarian diets, you may find that these are the only things sold in the frozen section without meat or dairy… On the other side of this, many vegan restaurants have great fake meat products that are much more palatable than the stuff sold in the stores.

Vegetables: These are very necessary. I don’t eat them as much as I should, but when I do, it’s broccoli, peas, corn, green beans and spinach most of the time. Whenever I have a salad, I do my best to use organic kale or baby spinach as the main source rather than romaine or iceberg lettuce. The leafy greens like collards, spinach and kale are extremely good for you.. Don’t sleep on them.

Nuts & seeds: I find almonds are the best for me. Some articles have stated that they boost testosterone… I can’t say that’s true or false, but I do find almonds to be superior to most of the other nuts and seeds out there…Trader Joes sells raw, sliced almond flakes that can be turned into powder (if you have a chopper) and put into a protein shake. I do eat peanuts sometimes, and natural peanut butter, but too many peanuts can be bad for you because of the naturally-occurring toxins in them. I eat cashews in moderation, and I usually stay away from Macadamias when I’m cutting weight because of their high fat content. I don’t eat as much seeds as I probably should, but Pumpkin seeds are definitely recommended… They are high in iron, which is important, because as an athlete, iron can be lost rapidly through sweat. Sunflower seeds are also pretty good and are a decent source of protein and vitamin E…

Seitan: although this stuff is delicious and has the most meat-like texture, it is essentially just wheat gluten and is pretty hard to digest… I stay away from it when I’m in hard training, but during the off-season, it’s fair play. Many restaurants have good meals with seitan.

Soy milk, almond milk, etc: I don’t eat cereal all that much, but when I do, I prefer almond milk and rice milk over soy milk… Just a personal preference. These can be added to protein shakes too. Rice milk is a little thinner that almond and soy usually…

Sodium: Many of the foods I really enjoy have a lot of sodium in them. I have no problem eating moderately sodium-rich foods until I get close to cutting to lightweight… Sodium causes you to retain water, so it’s pointless to consume if you want to drop water weight. 3 weeks before a fight, I start watching my sodium intake, and by the week of the fight, I’m down to less than 100 grams per day.

Supplements:

Vega: This is awesome. It has everything I need and it’s quick and easy. Although not ideal, I could really live off of this with no problems. Full nutrition. Vega makes powdered whole food meal replacements and energy bars that I eat pretty much every day. Their meal replacement uses hemp protein and pea protein as a base. When I’m taking this and/or The Ultimate Meal (see below) I find there’s no reason for a multi-vitamin.

The Ultimate Meal: I swear by this stuff, it’s a whole meal and has made up a huge part of my diet for 3 years now. It’s a bit of an acquired taste, but I truly notice myself feeling better when I use it daily. Remember to follow the directions and add the apple and banana. (This is not your normal “add powder to water” supplement)

Organic food bar: These are great for cutting weight… there is some fat but it’s good fat, and there’s hardly any sodium. Made of mostly almond butter and date paste.

Cliff Builders Bar: As far as protein bars go, these are the best tasting and pretty addictive… There’s a decent amount of sodium and calories, so they’re not ideal when you’re cutting weight.

Protein powders: I stay away from soy as a powdered protein supplement, and not because of the idiotic claim that it is “bad for men because it boosts estrogen” (which is complete nonsense), but because it doesn’t have a full amino acid spectrum and has less protein content percentage… Instead of soy powder, I use brown rice protein from Nutri-Biotic brand when I’m looking for plain protein supplement. Nutri-Biotic Rice protein has an 80% protein content and all the amino acids. I also find that Rice protein is digested a lot easier than soy.
