For example, heart disease risk factors for women are much more significant than for men in many situations.</p>
<p>Depression seems to affect more women than it does men. According to the National Institute of Mental Health, approximately 12 million women are being affected by some form of a depressive disorder yearly, in comparison to approximately 6 million men. According to psychologists, women need to have connections with other people in their lives, and they need sustenance or else they are going to become depressed. Sometimes the condition is also capable of being triggered by hormonal changes, particularly when it comes to postpartum depression following pregnancy or around the time of menopause.<br />
<strong><br />
Other depression risk factors for women may include:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>A previous episode of depression,</li>
<li>A family history of a depressive disorder,</li>
<li>A history of problems relating to the heart,</li>
<li>The experience of a serious chronic illness,</li>
<li>Problems with marriage or family,</li>
<li>Issues with or a history of substance abuse,</li>
<li>The use of drugs that may be capable of triggering depression, including medications that are used to treat seizures or high blood pressure,</li>
<li>Stressful life events and life experiences, such as a death or the loss of a job,</li>
<li>Experiencing a disease that is capable of triggering a depressive episode, such as thyroid disease for example, or anemia,</li>
<li> A recent serious illness, or the experience of a recent operation or surgery,</li>
<li>A childhood history of physical abuse or of sexual abuse,</li>
<li>Being naturally overly anxious, or being a worrier,</li>
<li>Possessing an anxiety disorder,</li>
<li>Possessing an eating disorder,</li>
</ul>
<p>In order to help to reduce the risks that are associated with depression, it is recommended that you try to find a reason that will get you up in the morning. When you have good reasons to get out of bed every morning, such as a job, the community, love, your pets, or volunteer work, then you can work through the depression.</p>
<p>Based on statistics revolving around people that are suffering from depression, both out of men and women, the people that are the healthiest are those that are in relationships that are perceived as being significant and caring. Adults that are not in nurturing relationships may be at risk of developing depression, but this risk for depression can be reduced when adults make efforts to reach out within the community.</p>

Oats come in various forms, so sometimes confusion results when trying to determine which kind to use!  So, without further ado...</p>
<p><strong>Let's take a look at the the different kinds of oats:</strong></p>
<p><strong><img src="http://www.organicfruitsandnuts.com/Merchant/IM001134bweb.jpg" alt="Oat Groats" title="Oat Groats" align="left" height="158" width="211" />Oat Groats </strong>or <strong>Hulled oats</strong>: An oat in its original form has a hard, outer covering that makes eating it an unrecommended habit.  When the outer 'shell' is removed, you have oat groats in which a layer of bran is exposed. This bran layer protects nutrients inside the oat. Oat groats are edible and look similar to rye.<em><br />

<strong><img src="http://www.simply-natural.biz/media/oatsteelcut_big.jpg" alt="Steel cut oats" title="Steel cut oats" align="right" height="186" width="250" />Steel Cut Oats: </strong>These oats are the result of oats groats having been cut into smaller pieces with steel blades (hence their name). They are still quite nutritious having a nutty taste and chewy texture. They might also be known as coarse-cut oats, pinhead oats, Scotch oats, or Irish oats.</p>
<p><strong><img src="http://www.organicfruitsandnuts.com/Merchant/IM002834bweb.jpg" alt="Rolled Oats" title="Rolled Oats" align="left" height="158" width="211" />Old Fashioned Oats</strong>: These oats are what we often see in the supermarket. The bran of the oat has been removed, so the level of nutrition decreases somewhat. The oats are steamed and flattened, thus giving us that familiar oat appearance we see in the Quaker brand. <p><strong>Quick-Cooking Oats/Instant Oatmeal</strong>: They're old fashioned oats that have been cut into smaller flakes. They cook quickly because the small flakes absorb water quickly. These oats are usually the ones sold in individual pouches with added added sugar, salt, and flavorings. Not the best choice of oats, but better than a big, greasy doughnut!</p>
<p>Oats can be processed even further into a fine powder which can be used as <strong>baby</strong> <strong>food</strong>. You can also use <strong>oat flour</strong> for baking.</p>
<p><strong>I prefer</strong> steel cut oats for oatmeal. They do require some time to cook, but they have a great taste, and are a little more nutritious. I also have the old fashioned kind in my pantry as I use them in bread, muesli, or cookie recipes.</p>
<p>If you're not already doing so, why not <strong>give oatmeal a try</strong>. On a chilly morning, go ahead and cook a steaming bowl of this good stuff. Add toppings, like cinnamon, walnuts, and dried cranberries. <p><strong>Calcium can help you lose weight and get leaner by:</strong></p>

<li>helping your body burn stored fat</li>
<li>preventing fat storage in the first place</li>
</ul>
<p>By eating foods high in calcium 3-4 times a day it's possible to <strong>burn up to 100 more fat calories</strong>. That could equal 10 pounds a year!</p>
<p>In fact, <strong>if you didn’t change anything else</strong> in your diet or exercise program, except for adding more calcium-rich foods, you could still lose some body fat! But if you add regular exercise and keep your diet clean, you’ll lose a ton more - plus, do a wealth of good for your overall health!</p>

For example, heart disease risk factors for women are much more significant than for men in many situations.</p>
<p>Heart disease actually happens to be the leading killer both for men and women. In women, however, this condition happens to be responsible for as many as 29 percent of all deaths according to the CDC. The disease itself is not the largest problem faced by women that are suffering from heart disease. The real problem comes from premature disability and death. Dying at the age of 60 is far too young in our country, and yet there are far too many of women that are dying at this age because of heart disease. There are women that are really ill because they are suffering from heart disease because they can't get around like they used to.</p>
<p>More men may die from heart disease than women, but women tend not to be diagnosed in time which is why it is important to understand the heart disease risk factors that women face just as commonly as men. We need to start thinking about more than just symptoms - We need to start thinking about what is actually putting us at risk.</p>
<p><strong>The heart disease risk factors that can affect women according to the American Heart Association can include:</strong></p>
<ul>
<li>An increase in your age,</li>
<li>Heredity, including your race - People that have a family history of this disease can be at a greater risk of developing it. African Americans, Mexican Americans, Native Americans, Asian Americans and Native Hawaiians may also be at risk of developing this disease.</li>
<li>Smoking</li>
<li>High blood pressure</li>
<li>High blood cholesterol</li>
<li>Little or no physical activity,</li>
<li>Obesity or issues with weight,</li>
<li>Diabetes</li>
</ul>
<p>The burden that is created by heart disease in women can be very great. The earlier that folks begin to adapt healthier practices and behaviors, the lower that their overall risk will be for stroke and heart disease outcomes.</p>
<p>It has been determined that women are fully capable of reducing their risk of developing heart disease, and all that it takes is modifying lifestyle choices in order to increase overall health. These modified lifestyle changes should include adopting a well balanced and nutritional diet and exercise to maintain overall good health and wellness. These are the first steps to increasing heart health and warding off the risks of developing heart disease.</p>

<p>Here are some easy things that you can do to remedy your menstrual cramps. </p>
<p><strong>Take Vitamins and Minerals -</strong> Many people that get a healthy dose of minerals and vitamins every day report that they have fewer problems relating to cramps, meaning that one of the best menstrual cramps remedies is simply to make sure that you are getting the right dose of vitamins and minerals every day. </p>
<p><strong>Improve Nutritional Balance -</strong> Cut out the sweets and the salty foods and make better dietary choices. A healthier diet isn't the end-all when it comes to menstrual cramps remedies, but it definitely does help. </p>
<p><strong>Cut Out the Alcohol and Caffeine -</strong> The caffeine that is found in tea and coffee, chocolate and cola can contribute to comfort for menstrual cramps by making you feel more nervous. The oils in the coffee are also capable of irritating your insides, so cut out the caffeine. Alcohol also should be avoid, especially if you have a tendency to retain water during your menstrual cycle as the alcohol is only going to make things worse. If you have to drink, then you should limit yourself to light wine, and only a glass or two. </p>
<p><strong>Warm Up - </strong>Warming up is going to increase your flow of blood in your body, and this is going to relax the muscles in your body. This is especially useful when it comes to the cramped and congested area of your pelvis. You should be drinking plenty of hot herbal tea and lemonade, and you may also consider putting a heating pad or a warm bottle of hot water down on your abdomen for a few minutes at a time in order to warm things up.</p>
<p><strong>Aspirin and Acetaminophen -</strong> Both Aspirin and Acetaminophen can be taken for relieving cramps. There are also a number of over the counter style medications that you can take including Medipren, Nuprin, Haltran and Advil. These medications contain a chemical known as ibuprofen which helps to inhibit the pain causing actions of the prostaglandins in your uterus. </p>

<p>I was inspired by a recipe I found in my files the other day, a nameless recipe scribbled on a notepad, as if I were in a rush.  I played around with it and came up with a macadamia coconut granola that has pleasantly sweet, as well as buttery, nutty flavor.  I added organic banana chips to my batch for an added tropical taste.</p>
<p>This granola works well as a breakfast cereal, as a topping for yogurt, or as a snack by itself.</p>

<h2>Tropical Granola</h2>
<p>Ingredients:</p>
<ul>
<li>4 cups rolled oats</li>
<li>1/3 cup toasted wheat germ</li>
<li>1/3 cup flax seed meal</li>
<li>1/2 cup shredded coconut</li>
<li>1/2 tsp salt</li>
<li>1/4 tsp cinnamon</li>
<li>1/4 cup olive oil or canola oil</li>
<li>1/3 cup apple juice</li>
<li>1/4 cup maple syrup</li>
<li>1 tsp coconut extract</li>
<li>1 cup macadamia nuts</li>
</ul>
<p>Optional:</p>
<ul>
<li>1/3 cup banana chips</li>
<li>1/4 cup dried pineapple</li>
</ul>
<p>Preheat oven to 300 degrees F (150 degrees C).</p>
<p>Mix dry ingredients in a large bowl.  Mix wet ingredients in separate bowl. Then pour wet ingredients into dry, and combine.</p>
<p>Spread mixture on a 9x13 baking pan that has been sprayed with nonstick cooking spray.</p>
<p>Bake for 25 minutes.  Remove baking pan from oven and stir granola.  Add macadamia nuts.  Add banana chips and/or dried pineapple if you are using.  Bake for 20 more minutes, or until toasted.  Keep a close eye on the granola to prevent burning.  Stir every 20 minutes.</p>
<p>Let cool completely.  Store in airtight container.</p>

<p>This is just one of the reasons <a target="_blank" href="http://nutritionfitnesslife.com/2007/12/04/15-reasons-not-to-own-a-scale/">why I dislike scales</a> and don’t even own one. For those of you who are discouraged and ready to give up your exercising and eating clean efforts simply because you’re not getting lighter, pleeeease don’t!!!!</p>
<p>When someone says, “I’ve lost weight,” what does that mean, really? Is that weight water? Fat? Muscle?</p>
<p>We don’t want to lose muscle weight. Muscle is what burns most calories and boosts your metabolism. Muscle is what gives you that toned and cut look – Exhibit A: <a target="_blank" href="http://mizfitonline.com/?p=131">MizFit’s arms</a>. Muscles like those don’t magically grow from Twinkie consumption.</p>
<p>Muscle is also heavier, yet denser, than fat. This means muscle takes up less space (<em>yay</em>) but weighs more (<em>potentially discouraging</em>).</p>
<p>A better determination of your progress would be a body fat composition analysis. Many gyms offer this test with skin calipers. Some medical centers or universities offer more accurate (<em>and extensive and pricey</em>) methods through <a target="_blank" href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dual_energy_X-ray_absorptiometry">dual energy X-ray absorptiometry</a> (DEXA) or <a target="_blank" href="http://www.answers.com/topic/hydrostatic-weighing?cat=technology">hydrostatic weighing</a>.</p>
<p>More conveniently, get out the tape measure and measure yourself.  Keep a record of your progress. Losing inches can mean a leaner body despite the scale refusing to budge.</p>
<p>Also, how are your clothes fitting? Are they feeling loose these days?  That's a real easy way to gauge your fat blasting progress.</p>
<p>And speaking of feeling, how do <em>you</em> feel? Do you feel leaner, more energetic? Can you exercise longer, go faster, life heavier? If yes, you’re getting fitter, and that’s nothing to get discouraged about! So, even  if those pesky numbers on the scale aren't dropping like you expect, keep exercising, keep working on your eating habits, and don't ever give up!</p>

These ribbons are designed to symbolize all things breast cancer related. These little pink beauties are virtually everywhere these days. Did you know, however, that there are a whole myriad of other types of breast cancer merchandise as well, in addition to just the little pink ribbons? </p>
<p>There are actually a number of other cancer awareness ribbons out there as well that tie in with breast cancer merchandise and yet have their own little special edge as well. Here are some of the cancer awareness ribbons that you may see around you. When you know what they are, that is when you can better appreciate what they mean and the incredible survivors that are wearing them.</p>
<p><strong>Teal Ribbons -</strong> This is a cancer awareness ribbon color that is meant to signify an ovarian cancer supporter or survivor. While this cancer may not be as prevalent in nature as breast cancer is, its numbers are still quite on the rise unfortunately. What this means is that when you see a teal awareness ribbon for cancer, you are going to know that it stands for someone fighting a rare and yet serious form of cancer. </p>
<p><strong>Peach Ribbons -</strong> This is a cancer awareness ribbon color that is meant to signify a uterine cancer supporter or survivor. This type of cancer may not actually be mentioned all that often, but it is a killer cancer if it is not actually detected soon enough and if it is not treated properly. This means that there are a lot of people out there fighting uterine cancer, whether they know it or not. </p>
<p><strong>Lavender Ribbons -</strong> This is a cancer awareness ribbon color that is meant to signify a gynecological cancer survivor or supporter. This concept actually encompasses a number of different types of cancer including cervical cancer and ovarian cancer for example. These cancers tend to be extremely hard to detect in certain situations. The gynecological cancer awareness ribbon is designed to relate to anything that has to do with cancer of the female's reproductive organs. </p>
<p><strong>Teal and White Ribbons -</strong> This is a cancer awareness ribbon color that is meant to signify a cervical cancer supporter or survivor. This is a cancer that is relatively hard for doctors to detect unless they happen to screen for it. Luckily, when cervical cancer is caught early enough, it can be removed and properly treated to create a healthy and happy cancer survivor.</p>

For some of these women, the symptoms will begin in the earlier stages of the pregnancy, and they may occur on an intermittent basis until after delivery. For more than 50 percent of women, the pain exists during the final 3 months of the pregnancy, and there is no known cause for this discomfort. Recent studies are beginning to show that women with more than a single pregnancy, with greater weight gain numbers or with a history of back pain in the past are those who are the most likely to experience back pain in their pregnancy.</p>
<h3><strong>Causes</strong></h3>
<p>The causes of back pain in pregnancy are believed to come as a result of changes in the posture of the body, poor mechanics of the body, fatigue in the muscles, hormones causing ligament connective tissues to relax, Sciatica related pain and excessive weight gain. There are also a number of activities that are considered to be either causes of back pain in pregnancy or things that exacerbate the back pain in pregnancy. These include standing or walking for periods of longer than 30 minutes at a time, standing on a single leg, bending forward, climbing up stairs, stepping into or out of the bed, turning over while in bed, driving for a period longer than 30 minutes, poor posture while sitting and carrying heavy or large items.</p>
<h3><strong>Treatment</strong></h3>
<p>There are a number of options that are available for dealing with back pain in pregnancy. For example, a pelvic belt can be prescribed to a woman that is having trouble with intermittent back pain while sitting, standing or walking. Regular exercises as well as conditioning exercises are both useful for back pain in pregnancy, including swimming, walking and bicycling. Back pain may also be relieved by moist cold and heat packs. Pregnant women dealing with back pain may choose to take pain medications, but should only do so under the care of a physician. Bed rest is also indicated for many women dealing with back pain, especially in their final trimester of their pregnancy, and the physician may also recommend massage in order to alleviate some of the discomfort.</p>
<h3><strong>Prevention</strong></h3>
<p>There are a number of things that can be done for back pain prevention as well. Gaining excessive weight during pregnancy should be avoided, for example. Maintaining proper posture can help to prevent this type of back pain as well. Proper mechanics of the body should also be practiced, and an exercise program that is designed to strengthen the back should be followed. Low heeled shoes should be warn during pregnancy as well, to prevent back pain from becoming a problem.</p>
<p>Back pain in pregnancy is not always persistent, but it may become so if the proper steps are not taken to keep it at bay.</p>
