The Lake & Stock

The lake covers around 2.4 acres with a mixture of open water, reed lined margins and varying depths to keep things interesting. The carp have a number of areas to patrol, with the shallower sandy margin on the right hand side being a regular route, while the deeper areas and sandbar on the left can also be worth exploring.

The carp stock is made up of around 60 hand picked carp, with an average weight of around 30lb and a top weight of over 51lb. There’s a good spread of twenties and thirties, along with a few larger fish including two known carp over 44lb.

Lakeside Accommodation

The lakeside house sleeps up to six guests (eight if you use the sofa beds), giving anglers the freedom to bring guests along while still staying close to the fishing.

Inside, it’s comfortable and well equipped, with three bedrooms, a cosy lounge with a wood‑burning fireplace, a sun room and a fully fitted kitchen. There’s also a utility area with a dishwasher, washing machine and extra freezer space.

Outside, the covered patio looks straight across the lawn towards the lake. It’s a great spot for breakfast, evening meals or simply watching the water while you unwind.

Sky Lake

This lake has an exceptional reputation for big carp fishing in France and is a short drive from Calais at just 3 hours 15 minutes. With great management, facilities, optional food packages and bait available to buy on site, the lake has it all.

As the stock of carp has matured over the years, there are now over 50 x 50lb+ carp and a lake record at over 84lb. The great thing is that, despite these huge carp, we still wouldn´t describe Sky Lake as a particularly difficult lake. It is a comfortable 12 acres, so no inland sea! You prebook your swims and can choose from a selection of well maintained doubles or singles.

The lake contains very little weed or snags and no nuisance species like poisson chat or crayfish, making for an enjoyable fishing experience. There’s good depth with 2.5-4 metres on average, making this a lake that doesn ‘t really switch off in the hotter summer months either.

Evaro

Opened to anglers in 2021, Evaro is a dream French carp lake for the experienced angler. This 7.5 acre gravel pit in the Champagne region is around 3 hours 45 minutes from Calais and has everything you’d expect from a quality big carp venue, with loads of features, plenty of depth and a seriously impressive stock of carp to over 84lb.

The carp stock is what really makes Evaro stand out. The original fish are stunning and carefully managed stockings have helped build the lake to around 310 carp, with an average weight in the mid to high thirties and the biggest now over 84lb. It’s certainly not a runs water, but when every bite could be the fish of a lifetime, that’s no bad thing.

You book Evaro on a double swim basis, with three spacious doubles for up to six anglers, or you can hire the lake exclusively for up to seven anglers. Plateaus, drop-offs and overhanging margins provide plenty to fish to, while depths generally range between 2.5 and 4 metres with some areas reaching 5 metres.

Fullys Lake

26 acre Fullys Lake is home to around 565 carp to over 82lb. Alongside the big commons and mirrors, the many fully scaled mirrors, linears and even koi are the jewels in the crown, making this one of the most unique carp fishing lakes in France.

Created and run by Constant Lebel, a respected French FOX consultant, Fullys combines stunning fish with a peaceful, natural setting. Around 4 hours from Calais, you can pre-book individual swims or hire the lake exclusively, with six well-maintained swims catering for up to eight anglers, or ten if you book the whole venue.

There are plenty of features to fish to, with depths ranging from around 2 to 3.5 metres. The bottom is mainly hard, with a mix of gravel, sand and silt areas, making it a rewarding water for anglers who enjoy finding spots and working the lake.

The stock is exceptional, with around 50 carp over 40lb, more than 100 over 30lb and a lake record common now over 82lb.

Old Oaks

Old Oaks was opened in 2006 by Mehdi and has built a reputation as one of the most exciting small big carp waters in France. We’ve worked with Mehdi for over 20 years and his attention to detail and passion for carp fishing are reflected perfectly in this lake.

At around 5 acres, Old Oaks is booked exclusively for up to five anglers, making it a great choice for groups wanting the lake to themselves. Around 4.5 hours from Calais, it’s a challenging venue with plateaus, weed beds, gullies and overhanging vegetation all providing classic big carp features where every bite could be something special.

The lake holds around 100 to 120 carp, with the vast majority weighing over 30lb, right up to the magnificent lake record common over 82lb. Accurate bait placement is often the key to success here and a baitboat can be a real advantage, particularly when fishing tight to the far margin.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I legally need to carry in my car when driving in France?

Several items are mandatory – and the fines for not having them are real. Above, within the ‘Documents’ and ‘Driving in France’ sections we have marked which items are legally required.

Do I need to take out insurance?

It is seriously worth checking your vehicle insurance policy covers Europe – most UK comprehensive policies provide 90 days of European cover, but confirm this with your provider before you travel. Breakdown cover is not mandatory but strongly recommended, recovery costs on French motorways can be significant.

It is also seriously worth taking out travel insurance at the point of booking your holiday, not only just before you travel – if something goes wrong and you need to cancel your holiday, these policies can cover the payments you have made.

How much bait should I take when carp fishing in France?

Given the Brexit restrictions on bringing bait from the UK (read about this in our Carp Fishing in France & Brexit article) , most anglers now pre-order through their venue or use EU-based suppliers. As a general guide, a week’s fishing typically calls for 5-10kg of boilies per angler and then your chosen ground bait such as pellets, particle etc.

The quantities however really depend on the lake you are fishing, how heavily you intend to bait and the conditions you’re facing including time of year. Your venue owner can advise on quantities when you book, and many can organise bait to be ready when you arrive.

What are crayfish and poisson chat, and do I need to worry about them?

Both are invasive species found in many French carp lakes and require certain tactics to avoid affecting your fishing. Crayfish can strip bait from hooks quickly, while poisson chat (very small catfish-like fish) can be a persistent nuisance in certain waters. The good news is there are effective countermeasures which can stop or slow the effects – hard hookbaits, armour mesh wrap and specific rig adaptations all help. We cover this in detail in this section of our blog: Combatting Poisson Chat & Crayfish

Do I need a fishing permit to fish in France?

If you’re booking through Angling Lines, almost certainly not. The French carp lakes we represent are predominantly private venues on private land, and private fisheries are not subject to the French national licensing requirement – no Permis de Pêche or Carte de Pêche needed. In the rare cases where a licence does apply, we sort it on your behalf.

The only exception is if you choose to fish public waters independently during your trip – in which case you’ll need to purchase a licence at www.cartedepeche.fr before fishing.

Do I need to bring my own unhooking mat and carp care products to a French lake?

Yes on the carp care products – and this isn’t one to skimp on. French carp lakes can often hold fish of a lifetime, and the venues take their welfare seriously. Carp antiseptic and treatments such as Klinik or Propolis should be applied to any wound or hook hold before returning a fish – this is expected practice on quality venues and some make it a rule rather than a recommendation.

On the mat, net, weigh sling front and tripod, it’s worth checking your specific venue before you pack. A growing number of French carp lakes now supply some or all of this equipment as standard – partly for fish welfare, partly for biosecurity reasons, as venues look to reduce the risk of transferring pathogens between waters on anglers’ own kit. You’ll find details of exactly what each venue provides in the lake description and rules on the Angling Lines website, so you know what to bring and what you can leave at home. Carp care treatments should always be in your kit regardless.

Located in the Marne region on the edge of the Argonne Forest, Le Sauci is a well kept 12-acre carp lake approximately 3hr 30mins from the port of Calais, offering a great mix of quality fishing and angler comfort. With carp to over 61lb, spacious double swims and newly installed lodges for 2026, it’s a venue we’re really pleased to be able to offer our anglers.

The Lake & Stock

The owners, Thierry and Amandine, have clearly put a lot of thought and care into both the fishery and the facilities. Everything feels very well laid out and angler friendly. Surrounded by mature trees and lush greenery, the lake has plenty of character with sheltered bays, open water and an old riverbed running through the centre which now acts as a natural feeding area for the carp. The lake was originally dug in the early 1990s and features depths ranging from around 0.8m to 2.2m, averaging roughly 1.5m throughout. The lakebed is mainly clay.

In terms of stock, the lake already held a good head of carp before the current owners took over. In late 2024, they introduced a further 260 carp including fish to over 44lb, helping create a very healthy stock with plenty of long-term potential. There are also grass carp and pike present.

Swim Options

You can either prebook swims individually or hire the lake exclusively for a group of up to 8 anglers. There are 4 spacious double swims, two are traditional bivvy swims with access to a shared facilities block, while swims 1 and 4 each come with their own private lodge overlooking the lake.

All swims include a four-outlet power supply, a picnic table, barbecue and parking directly behind the swim.

The lodge swims are a real standout feature at Le Sauci, newly installed for 2026, offering a really comfortable setup for anglers wanting a few extra home comforts while still fishing just a few steps from their rods. Each includes two bedrooms, a fully equipped kitchen, a living area looking out onto the lake, two shower rooms, a separate toilet, heating and air conditioning. The lodges can accommodate up to six people in total (including a maximum of 2 anglers), making them ideal for couples, families or mixed groups where not everyone is fishing.

For anglers fishing the bivvy swims, there’s also a modern shared facilities block with shower, toilet, kitchenette, fridges with freezer compartments, seating area and heating. It’s a great balance between proper carp fishing and a few welcome comforts during a week on the bank. The parking area behind swims 2 and 3 is also large enough to accommodate campervans and caravans.

An 8-acre lake with a very impressive stock of carp – this lake is home to loads of 40’s and many over the magic 50lb barrier. The biggest resident was last caught at over 80lb, therefore this lake offers some of the best big carp fishing that France has to offer.

1. When did you discover carp fishing and how did you come to be here at the lake?

I started Carp fishing in the late 2000s (noughties?) I bought Souvenirs after moving to France specifically to find a good lake to buy in NE France within 3 hours of Calais.

2. What’s the best and worst part of being the owner?

Best for me is enjoying the company of positive anglers who recognise the venue as one for the future. Souvenirs is blossoming and as the Carp mature the weight gains are becoming seriously impressive. Some of our Euro Aqua stock has put on 20lbs in just over 2 years.

The worst part is dealing with dead fish. Fortunately not a frequent occurance, but one that puts a dampner on your mood for a few days for sure.

3. What would you say is the best feature of your lake?

The Carp! We have some stunning dark commons and beautifully plated mirrors. They are the main reason for many of our regulars to keep coming back.

4. When people arrive is there anything they are surprised by?

The size of the lake. For some reason, almost everyone says it is bigger than they thought.

5. What is the most common mistake you see anglers make at your lake?

Putting in too much bait when they set up on day one. Best to start off trying for a bite. Baiting little and often until you are happy with your chosen spots. The use of boats and bait boats greatly helps in locating active feeding spots.

6. Finally, what is the one most important piece of advice you’d give to anglers visiting your lake soon?

Be patient! Stick to what you do well back home regarding tactics, rigs and bait.

This is not a sales tactic and I have to admit I have an inherent dislike of insurance companies. I pay a fortune out in my premiums year after year and really never seem to have to claim. So on my balance books, insurance companies simply win out every time. However, having seen how many problems can occur, I’m hastily ‘touching wood’, knowing I should be grateful I have not had to claim.

But, and this is an enormous… BUT,  my experience of over 25 years in this business has taught me that insurance is important. Time after time I see instances where job losses, illness or even worse causes havoc and all at a time when people really could do without the stress and can least afford it.

What does travel insurance cover?

The main parts regarding holiday insurance cover are as follows. So get your insurance and make sure the policy gives your group the cover it needs.

• Cancellation of the holiday in certain circumstances
• Medical expenses and repatriation if necessary
• Cover for tackle and theft (optional)
• Cover for additional costs if a disaster should happen.

Insurance can cover all these things so it needs to be taken around the time you book & not just before you are due to travel. 

The preconception that insurance is just in case you have medical expenses abroad is very flawed. The preconception that a problem rarely occurs and it will probably all be alright is also seriously flawed. I can cite countless instances where this belief has caused huge problems. Usually and very sadly when someone loses their job or becomes seriously ill and the holiday cannot be taken.

The problem is when you pay your deposit and reserve a holiday you enter into a contract. It means that if you default on taking the trip, through no fault of the lake you have booked, you may lose your deposits paid. Contractually, it is not the lake owner’s fault and they should not lose their income because someone in the group fell ill.

Insurance is for unforeseen circumstances, it is important and when people book, particularly in groups, a lot is taken on trust by the organiser.

Time and time again I see people get caught out… So don’t let it happen to you. You can get insurance anywhere now, even the main supermarket.

1. When did you discover carp fishing and how did you come to be here at the lake?

I’ve always enjoyed coarse fishing but hadn’t really tried carp fishing until about 20 years ago. I went on a week-long carp break in France. It was early in the year, I had no gear, but borrowed what I needed and had an amazing week. The weather was fantastic and I caught a few fish, that were largely PB’s for me even if they were only upper teens and 20’s.

Back then, I had two young kids and was trying to balance my love of fishing with family life. I started looking for lakes where the family could enjoy themselves too – swimming, sunbathing, playing darts and pool, exploring. In general though, they were few and far between and often extremely expensive. I told myself I could do better and committed to finding something that would allow holidaymakers to enjoy both fishing and a proper French holiday, with something for everyone.

2. What’s the best and worst part of being the owner?

The best part is hearing people have broken their PB’s, that they’ve had an amazing holiday, that everything is perfect for them and well thought out. We put a lot of work into anticipating what people might need. The worst part is when fishing proves tricky. No matter how skilled you are, sometimes the fishing can be a real challenge.

3. What would you say is the best feature of your lake?

First and foremost, it’s just a really pretty lake. It’s about 1.5 acres, so not huge but it’s circular and accessible, so simple to fish, including stalking. I focus on fish that are unusual and have distinctive patterns or colours, fish that I’d catch and think that’s a great looking fish.

4. When people arrive is there anything they are surprised by?

How peaceful and idyllic the location is. Despite being close to some large towns and not too far from a couple of cities, the house and lake are very rural, really quiet. Wildlife is everywhere, and it’s a place where you can really switch off. Guests often spot birds and animals they wouldn’t usually see – some quite rare.

5. What is the most common mistake you see anglers make at your lake?

Probably overfeeding and not experimenting with baits and flavours. Fishy/meaty baits tend to work best, but sometimes something different works a treat. Some of the largest fish have been caught on a solitary worm, under a tree, close to the bank.

6. Finally, what is the one most important piece of advice you’d give to anglers visiting your lake soon?

Fish to the features. There are old tree roots in one area that carp love rolling over, and beds of iris where you’ll often see them cruising and circling. The margins are well worth exploring too. People often plump for the deep water or the deep silt but there’s much more to the lake, have a stalk under the trees – it often pays off.

A week-long session is the norm for most visiting anglers, but for many it’s a much longer stint than they’re used to back home. If you’re planning your first French carp adventure, the tips below should help you feel a little more prepared before you set off.

1. Make a list

The first thing you should do is make a list. It might feel a bit over the top, but honestly, make that list.

It can be the difference between an amazing week and a truly awful one. I know anglers who’ve turned up to their chosen lake only to realise they’d forgotten reels, pods, food, even alarms. Starting your trip in a bad mood because half your kit is still sitting in the garage is not the ideal way to kick off a week’s fishing.

A proper checklist might look long at first glance, but on a self‑drive trip these items are essential. Working through the list as you pack is the easiest way to make sure nothing important gets left behind.

2. Tackle

I tend to fish smaller lakes in France, so your own tackle needs might differ slightly. As with any venue, just like back home use gear that suits the water you’re fishing. Bigger lakes can demand stronger, more robust tackle, so plan accordingly.

Rods – Give yourself every chance of landing a big fish; that’s why you’re in France, after all. Most anglers opt for rods of 2.75lb test curve or stronger, and it’s a sensible choice when you’re targeting large carp. Ultimately, it’s your call, but don’t under‑gun yourself.

Reels – If the stars align and you get into multiple big fish during the week, you’ll be grateful for strong, reliable reels. You don’t want to hand-line a whacker in because your reels break.

Alarms – Check your alarms before you leave, and it’s worth putting fresh batteries in them for peace of mind. Knowing they’ll last the whole trip is one less thing to worry about.

End tackle – Take as much end tackle as you reasonably can. You may have trouble finding a tackle shop, and if you do, they may not have the items you require. Things such as leads, PVA, hooks, mainline and hooklink materials are hard to come by. You don’t want to find that miracle method that catches stacks of fish and then run out of the main components!

Bivvies – Back in the UK, I usually fish 24‑hour sessions with nothing more than a brolly and storm sides. After trying that setup for a full week in France, I quickly realised I needed more space for all the extra kit. Switching to a two‑man bivvy made the trip far more comfortable. Since I only use it a couple of times a year, it should last quite a long time (fingers crossed), so I should get my money’s worth out of it.

And the rest – Bring whatever you need to make your stay as comfortable as possible. A week can feel like a long time on the bank, and the more relaxed you are, the better you’ll fish. One item you’ll be glad you packed is mosquito repellent. French mozzies seem to be twice the size of ours, and they bite like they mean it. There are a few companies who supply devices that repel these little monsters… you have been warned! 

3. Bait

This is the biggest change to French carp fishing in recent years.

You can no longer just load the car with boilies like in the old days. Since Brexit, bait containing animal products cannot legally be taken into France, and that includes most boilies. Particles are treated differently, but only very small quantities are allowed, and anything above roughly 2kg per person risks being confiscated at the port. In simple terms, assume you cannot take your bait from the UK.

So how do anglers deal with it now?

Option 1 – Pre‑Order Bait at the Lake (Most Popular)
Nearly all French carp lakes now supply bait, and many actually prefer anglers to use it. You simply order before travelling and it will be ready for you on arrival. In many cases the fish are fed on that exact bait throughout the season, meaning the carp are already confident on it, recognise it as food, and are used to seeing it.

Option 2 – Order Bait for Delivery in France
If you’re loyal to a particular brand, that’s still possible. Many companies now ship directly to French fisheries or to local collection points. Some specialise in supplying UK anglers and will deliver to the lake if arranged in advance. But, check that your lake can accommodate this in advance – some lakes do not have anyone living on site.

Option 3 – Buy Bait on the Way
Plenty of anglers now stop en route from the port to stock up before reaching the venue. This works well if you prefer to see the bait before buying or want to pick up extra particles, pellets or additives.

Before You Travel
Always check the venue rules. Some lakes now require on‑site bait only, while others restrict certain particles to protect water quality. Look at recent feedback, find out what’s been working, but also pay attention to what’s most popular. Sometimes using something a little different from everyone else can be the edge you need.

4. Essentials

Clothing – The weather in France can be just as unpredictable as back home, so pack plenty of spare clothing. Downpours can appear out of nowhere, and you never know – you might end up wading in for that all‑important trophy shot because the fish is simply too big to lift out of the water (we can all dream). Temperatures can swing dramatically too, so be prepared for everything from chilly mornings to scorching afternoons.

Washing kit – A week is a long time without a wash, and you definitely don’t want to be turned away by British customs on the way home for being a health hazard. Pack a proper wash kit and a couple of towels. You’ll feel better, sleep better and fish better when you’re not living in your own stink.

Cooking equipment – Take whatever you normally use in the UK, but remember you’re away for a full week, so you may need extra cutlery and utensils. Check whether the venue has somewhere to wash up; if not, bring a bowl and some washing‑up gear. I’ve had food poisoning in France before, almost certainly from poorly cleaned pots and pans, and trust me… it was neither a pretty sight nor a pleasant smell. Good hygiene on the bank is worth the effort. Equally, rodents are often where anglers are because of the bait used. Remember to wash anything you’ve left outside – Weil’s disease sounds dramatic, but anglers are often more at risk than others.

5. Food

Since Brexit, there are restrictions on what food you can take into France, especially anything containing meat or dairy, so I tend to buy all my food once I’m over there. To be honest, after packing all the tackle there’s barely room left in the car for a bar of chocolate anyway, and French supermarkets are easy to find, well stocked, and often cheaper than the UK.

When it comes to what to eat, I still make sure I’ve got the essentials for “survival” while fishing – wine, beer, crisps and, naturally, more wine. But joking aside, a well‑fed angler is a happy angler, and happy anglers fish better. Don’t rely on snacks alone; try to have at least one proper meal each day. A bit of decent food goes a long way when you’re on the bank for a full week.

6. Travelling Requirements

→ Drive on the right
If it’s your first time driving abroad, remembering to stay on the right‑hand side can feel daunting at first, but you settle into it quickly.

→ Headlight beam deflectors (compulsory)
UK headlights dazzle oncoming traffic when driving on the right. Stick‑on converters from any car accessory shop will keep you legal.

→ Warning triangle (compulsory)
You must carry at least one in the car for use in a breakdown.

→ High‑visibility vest (compulsory)
Must be accessible inside the car (not in the boot). You need to be able to put it on before stepping out onto the road.

→ UK identifier (compulsory)
The old GB sticker is no longer valid. You now need a UK sticker unless your number plate already includes the UK identifier.

→ V5C logbook (compulsory)
You must carry your vehicle’s registration document (or a copy). French police can request it during checks.

→ Valid UK driving licence (compulsory)
A standard photocard licence is fine.

→ Car insurance
Check your policy before travelling. Most insurers still provide European cover, but some only include third‑party protection unless you upgrade. You may need to pay a small fee to extend your cover.

→ Breakdown cover
Strongly recommended. Without it, recovery and repairs in France can be extremely expensive. If you travel to Europe more than once a year, annual cover is usually the best value.

→ Travel insurance
Essential for medical emergencies, cancellations, and lost items.
Also take your GHIC (UK Global Health Insurance Card), which replaces the old EHIC/E111. It gives access to state healthcare at a reduced cost, but it’s not a substitute for full travel insurance.

→ Crit’Air clean‑air sticker
Some French cities have low‑emission zones. If your route takes you near one, you may need a Crit’Air sticker. It’s inexpensive but must be ordered in advance.

7. Extras

Lastly, here are a couple of items you’ve almost certainly thought of, but they’re worth a quick reminder. First up is your camera. Make sure you pack it, along with spare batteries or a power bank, because there’s nothing worse than landing a PB and realising you’ve got no way to record the moment. I’ve done it myself, and putting a PB koi and mirror back without a single photo still haunts me. Some of the smaller French villages only have tiny general stores with limited battery options, so take what you need before you travel.

A small first aid kit is also essential. It doesn’t need to be as well stocked as a doctor’s bag, but it should include plasters, bandages, antiseptic cream, painkillers and, in my case, a reliable hangover cure. A few basics can make a big difference over the course of a week, especially when you’re miles from the nearest pharmacy.

8. Final Thoughts

I hope this guide has helped, even if only a little. A trip to France might feel like it takes a lot of planning, but trust me, it’s worth every minute. When everything runs smoothly and you find yourself slipping the net under a carp the size of a small dog, you’ll understand why so many anglers go back year after year.

Take the time to organise things properly, enjoy the build‑up, and you’ll give yourself the best possible chance of making memories you’ll want to repeat again and again.
