This is not a sales tactic and I have to admit I have an inherent dislike of insurance companies. I pay a fortune out in my premiums year after year and really never seem to have to claim. So on my balance books, insurance companies simply win out every time. However, having seen how many problems can occur, I’m hastily ‘touching wood’, knowing I should be grateful I have not had to claim.

But, and this is an enormous… BUT,  my experience of over 25 years in this business has taught me that insurance is important. Time after time I see instances where job losses, illness or even worse causes havoc and all at a time when people really could do without the stress and can least afford it.

What does travel insurance cover?

The main parts regarding holiday insurance cover are as follows. So get your insurance and make sure the policy gives your group the cover it needs.

• Cancellation of the holiday in certain circumstances
• Medical expenses and repatriation if necessary
• Cover for tackle and theft (optional)
• Cover for additional costs if a disaster should happen.

Insurance can cover all these things so it needs to be taken around the time you book & not just before you are due to travel. 

The preconception that insurance is just in case you have medical expenses abroad is very flawed. The preconception that a problem rarely occurs and it will probably all be alright is also seriously flawed. I can cite countless instances where this belief has caused huge problems. Usually and very sadly when someone loses their job or becomes seriously ill and the holiday cannot be taken.

The problem is when you pay your deposit and reserve a holiday you enter into a contract. It means that if you default on taking the trip, through no fault of the lake you have booked, you may lose your deposits paid. Contractually, it is not the lake owner’s fault and they should not lose their income because someone in the group fell ill.

Insurance is for unforeseen circumstances, it is important and when people book, particularly in groups, a lot is taken on trust by the organiser.

Time and time again I see people get caught out… So don’t let it happen to you. You can get insurance anywhere now, even the main supermarket.

1. When did you discover carp fishing and how did you come to be here at the lake?

I’ve always enjoyed coarse fishing but hadn’t really tried carp fishing until about 20 years ago. I went on a week-long carp break in France. It was early in the year, I had no gear, but borrowed what I needed and had an amazing week. The weather was fantastic and I caught a few fish, that were largely PB’s for me even if they were only upper teens and 20’s.

Back then, I had two young kids and was trying to balance my love of fishing with family life. I started looking for lakes where the family could enjoy themselves too – swimming, sunbathing, playing darts and pool, exploring. In general though, they were few and far between and often extremely expensive. I told myself I could do better and committed to finding something that would allow holidaymakers to enjoy both fishing and a proper French holiday, with something for everyone.

2. What’s the best and worst part of being the owner?

The best part is hearing people have broken their PB’s, that they’ve had an amazing holiday, that everything is perfect for them and well thought out. We put a lot of work into anticipating what people might need. The worst part is when fishing proves tricky. No matter how skilled you are, sometimes the fishing can be a real challenge.

3. What would you say is the best feature of your lake?

First and foremost, it’s just a really pretty lake. It’s about 1.5 acres, so not huge but it’s circular and accessible, so simple to fish, including stalking. I focus on fish that are unusual and have distinctive patterns or colours, fish that I’d catch and think that’s a great looking fish.

4. When people arrive is there anything they are surprised by?

How peaceful and idyllic the location is. Despite being close to some large towns and not too far from a couple of cities, the house and lake are very rural, really quiet. Wildlife is everywhere, and it’s a place where you can really switch off. Guests often spot birds and animals they wouldn’t usually see – some quite rare.

5. What is the most common mistake you see anglers make at your lake?

Probably overfeeding and not experimenting with baits and flavours. Fishy/meaty baits tend to work best, but sometimes something different works a treat. Some of the largest fish have been caught on a solitary worm, under a tree, close to the bank.

6. Finally, what is the one most important piece of advice you’d give to anglers visiting your lake soon?

Fish to the features. There are old tree roots in one area that carp love rolling over, and beds of iris where you’ll often see them cruising and circling. The margins are well worth exploring too. People often plump for the deep water or the deep silt but there’s much more to the lake, have a stalk under the trees – it often pays off.

A week-long session is the norm for most visiting anglers, but for many it’s a much longer stint than they’re used to back home. If you’re planning your first French carp adventure, the tips below should help you feel a little more prepared before you set off.

1. Make a list

The first thing you should do is make a list. It might feel a bit over the top, but honestly, make that list.

It can be the difference between an amazing week and a truly awful one. I know anglers who’ve turned up to their chosen lake only to realise they’d forgotten reels, pods, food, even alarms. Starting your trip in a bad mood because half your kit is still sitting in the garage is not the ideal way to kick off a week’s fishing.

A proper checklist might look long at first glance, but on a self‑drive trip these items are essential. Working through the list as you pack is the easiest way to make sure nothing important gets left behind.

2. Tackle

I tend to fish smaller lakes in France, so your own tackle needs might differ slightly. As with any venue, just like back home use gear that suits the water you’re fishing. Bigger lakes can demand stronger, more robust tackle, so plan accordingly.

Rods – Give yourself every chance of landing a big fish; that’s why you’re in France, after all. Most anglers opt for rods of 2.75lb test curve or stronger, and it’s a sensible choice when you’re targeting large carp. Ultimately, it’s your call, but don’t under‑gun yourself.

Reels – If the stars align and you get into multiple big fish during the week, you’ll be grateful for strong, reliable reels. You don’t want to hand-line a whacker in because your reels break.

Alarms – Check your alarms before you leave, and it’s worth putting fresh batteries in them for peace of mind. Knowing they’ll last the whole trip is one less thing to worry about.

End tackle – Take as much end tackle as you reasonably can. You may have trouble finding a tackle shop, and if you do, they may not have the items you require. Things such as leads, PVA, hooks, mainline and hooklink materials are hard to come by. You don’t want to find that miracle method that catches stacks of fish and then run out of the main components!

Bivvies – Back in the UK, I usually fish 24‑hour sessions with nothing more than a brolly and storm sides. After trying that setup for a full week in France, I quickly realised I needed more space for all the extra kit. Switching to a two‑man bivvy made the trip far more comfortable. Since I only use it a couple of times a year, it should last quite a long time (fingers crossed), so I should get my money’s worth out of it.

And the rest – Bring whatever you need to make your stay as comfortable as possible. A week can feel like a long time on the bank, and the more relaxed you are, the better you’ll fish. One item you’ll be glad you packed is mosquito repellent. French mozzies seem to be twice the size of ours, and they bite like they mean it. There are a few companies who supply devices that repel these little monsters… you have been warned! 

3. Bait

This is the biggest change to French carp fishing in recent years.

You can no longer just load the car with boilies like in the old days. Since Brexit, bait containing animal products cannot legally be taken into France, and that includes most boilies. Particles are treated differently, but only very small quantities are allowed, and anything above roughly 2kg per person risks being confiscated at the port. In simple terms, assume you cannot take your bait from the UK.

So how do anglers deal with it now?

Option 1 – Pre‑Order Bait at the Lake (Most Popular)
Nearly all French carp lakes now supply bait, and many actually prefer anglers to use it. You simply order before travelling and it will be ready for you on arrival. In many cases the fish are fed on that exact bait throughout the season, meaning the carp are already confident on it, recognise it as food, and are used to seeing it.

Option 2 – Order Bait for Delivery in France
If you’re loyal to a particular brand, that’s still possible. Many companies now ship directly to French fisheries or to local collection points. Some specialise in supplying UK anglers and will deliver to the lake if arranged in advance. But, check that your lake can accommodate this in advance – some lakes do not have anyone living on site.

Option 3 – Buy Bait on the Way
Plenty of anglers now stop en route from the port to stock up before reaching the venue. This works well if you prefer to see the bait before buying or want to pick up extra particles, pellets or additives.

Before You Travel
Always check the venue rules. Some lakes now require on‑site bait only, while others restrict certain particles to protect water quality. Look at recent feedback, find out what’s been working, but also pay attention to what’s most popular. Sometimes using something a little different from everyone else can be the edge you need.

4. Essentials

Clothing – The weather in France can be just as unpredictable as back home, so pack plenty of spare clothing. Downpours can appear out of nowhere, and you never know – you might end up wading in for that all‑important trophy shot because the fish is simply too big to lift out of the water (we can all dream). Temperatures can swing dramatically too, so be prepared for everything from chilly mornings to scorching afternoons.

Washing kit – A week is a long time without a wash, and you definitely don’t want to be turned away by British customs on the way home for being a health hazard. Pack a proper wash kit and a couple of towels. You’ll feel better, sleep better and fish better when you’re not living in your own stink.

Cooking equipment – Take whatever you normally use in the UK, but remember you’re away for a full week, so you may need extra cutlery and utensils. Check whether the venue has somewhere to wash up; if not, bring a bowl and some washing‑up gear. I’ve had food poisoning in France before, almost certainly from poorly cleaned pots and pans, and trust me… it was neither a pretty sight nor a pleasant smell. Good hygiene on the bank is worth the effort. Equally, rodents are often where anglers are because of the bait used. Remember to wash anything you’ve left outside – Weil’s disease sounds dramatic, but anglers are often more at risk than others.

5. Food

Since Brexit, there are restrictions on what food you can take into France, especially anything containing meat or dairy, so I tend to buy all my food once I’m over there. To be honest, after packing all the tackle there’s barely room left in the car for a bar of chocolate anyway, and French supermarkets are easy to find, well stocked, and often cheaper than the UK.

When it comes to what to eat, I still make sure I’ve got the essentials for “survival” while fishing – wine, beer, crisps and, naturally, more wine. But joking aside, a well‑fed angler is a happy angler, and happy anglers fish better. Don’t rely on snacks alone; try to have at least one proper meal each day. A bit of decent food goes a long way when you’re on the bank for a full week.

6. Travelling Requirements

→ Drive on the right
If it’s your first time driving abroad, remembering to stay on the right‑hand side can feel daunting at first, but you settle into it quickly.

→ Headlight beam deflectors (compulsory)
UK headlights dazzle oncoming traffic when driving on the right. Stick‑on converters from any car accessory shop will keep you legal.

→ Warning triangle (compulsory)
You must carry at least one in the car for use in a breakdown.

→ High‑visibility vest (compulsory)
Must be accessible inside the car (not in the boot). You need to be able to put it on before stepping out onto the road.

→ UK identifier (compulsory)
The old GB sticker is no longer valid. You now need a UK sticker unless your number plate already includes the UK identifier.

→ V5C logbook (compulsory)
You must carry your vehicle’s registration document (or a copy). French police can request it during checks.

→ Valid UK driving licence (compulsory)
A standard photocard licence is fine.

→ Car insurance
Check your policy before travelling. Most insurers still provide European cover, but some only include third‑party protection unless you upgrade. You may need to pay a small fee to extend your cover.

→ Breakdown cover
Strongly recommended. Without it, recovery and repairs in France can be extremely expensive. If you travel to Europe more than once a year, annual cover is usually the best value.

→ Travel insurance
Essential for medical emergencies, cancellations, and lost items.
Also take your GHIC (UK Global Health Insurance Card), which replaces the old EHIC/E111. It gives access to state healthcare at a reduced cost, but it’s not a substitute for full travel insurance.

→ Crit’Air clean‑air sticker
Some French cities have low‑emission zones. If your route takes you near one, you may need a Crit’Air sticker. It’s inexpensive but must be ordered in advance.

7. Extras

Lastly, here are a couple of items you’ve almost certainly thought of, but they’re worth a quick reminder. First up is your camera. Make sure you pack it, along with spare batteries or a power bank, because there’s nothing worse than landing a PB and realising you’ve got no way to record the moment. I’ve done it myself, and putting a PB koi and mirror back without a single photo still haunts me. Some of the smaller French villages only have tiny general stores with limited battery options, so take what you need before you travel.

A small first aid kit is also essential. It doesn’t need to be as well stocked as a doctor’s bag, but it should include plasters, bandages, antiseptic cream, painkillers and, in my case, a reliable hangover cure. A few basics can make a big difference over the course of a week, especially when you’re miles from the nearest pharmacy.

8. Final Thoughts

I hope this guide has helped, even if only a little. A trip to France might feel like it takes a lot of planning, but trust me, it’s worth every minute. When everything runs smoothly and you find yourself slipping the net under a carp the size of a small dog, you’ll understand why so many anglers go back year after year.

1. There are only two of us anglers, can we book a lake exclusive to ourselves?

2. How much of an advantage is having a lake to yourself?

There are in fact pro’s and cons.

Let’s start with the seemingly obvious pro’s… Exclusivity gives your group complete control to decide how it’s fished and enables an immense amount of flexibility. This is really beneficial so you can maximise your options without worrying about other anglers who are not in your group. You can for instance, trickle feed or rest swims to move onto later or at night or follow the carp around if they are on the move. It enables you to stalk around a lake without treading on other anglers toes. For these reasons too it can be more relaxing and less like a competition.

The cons… Some lakes (Blue Lake and Laroussi among them) can benefit from having an even distribution of anglers all around the lake. Remember carp will often move away from pressure and if you are the only anglers on a normally busy water, you may have to work harder or move to get your results.  

3. Do I need special tackle for a French carp fishing trip? Can I use my normal carp fishing tackle I would use in the UK?

Generally, yes, you can use your normal fishing tackle – with a few things to consider. Fishing in most French lakes is no different to fishing over here in Blighty. Except the carp are usually much bigger, the weather is generally better and you tend to catch more prolifically. You don’t suddenly need big pit reels etc to fish any of the lakes unless they are huge and you are fishing at 300 meters!

However, the lakes do take fish safety very seriously and usually demand that you use at least a 42” landing net and a large & high standard of unhooking mat.

15lb min breaking strain line also appears to be the norm and you might have to increase your hook size.

So always check out the lake rules to make sure you’re okay and if you are any item of tackle missing, look to see if the lake have them on site or hire them. Don’t forget all the owners will happily discuss tackle with you and answer your specific questions.

4. How do I choose the best carp lake in France for me?

There are so many options available, so if you want to get a quick start then look at these key aspects and follow these simple steps:

Size of carp   

Ask yourself realistically what size would you be happy to catch? Emeraude and Old Oaks are lakes with seriously BIG carp in them, but in turn they are generally trickier to catch and you may be waiting longer for the action to happen. If being in with the chance of a new personal best or landing a monster 80lb+ carp is more important than the buzzers going off often, these lakes are well suited.

Difficulty of the lake 

You can also view this as the number of runs you can reasonably expect. Some waters can be hard and a blank could happen but some are genuinely classed by us as runs waters. There are many in between.  So find the right balance. The feedback will tell you very clearly how well lakes fish, it’s accurate and honest! Lakes like Vincons and Cailleaux make it very difficult to blank.

Look at your own carp fishing experience 

What are your objectives for the holiday? It’s no good being a novice and choosing a hard water if you really want plenty of action and to come back with plenty of carp in the photo album. If you are a relatively inexperienced angler, choose a lake where there is a good bailiff who can offer advice or a water which shows very good catch rates. Travelling with friends who can give you some support is also a great idea.

You invest a lot in a holiday so make sure you give yourself the best chance of a successful trip. Lakes such as Lillypool and Laroussi have well recommended and respected bailiffs in the form of Richard and Mehdi. Both are experienced, friendly anglers who are happy to give you advice if needed.

5. Taking non-anglers on your French carp fishing trip

If you are taking non anglers or need accommodation – ensure that the accommodation/facilities detailed on the website are an adequate standard for the fussiest of the people going. Your holiday can be ruined if you ‘over sell’ the accommodation and your non angler is unhappy all week because they were expecting 4* accommodation in a 2* mobile home!

6. How far do I need to travel for my carp fishing holiday?

One of the most subjective decisions you can make. We advise on the mileage and drive time to each of our venues. However for me, it’s more important to get the lake right than worry about travelling an extra hour or so. You will be there all week so enjoying your lake is paramount. If that lake happens to be further away you need to look at the added costs of the fuel and tolls.

Many of our lakes that are further away tend to be a little cheaper anyway to balance this out, but you do need to consider the driver.  There are very cheap options though that can counter distance too.  B&B’s and hotels in France are very cheap and leaving on a Friday and staying halfway over night can actually improve your holiday, and take all the stress out of the journey. (We will happily recommend places to stay depending how far your journey is … so just ask)

There are just two islands on this lake, both with a cabin and enough room to comfortably accommodate 2 anglers. Each has its own half of the lake, as described above.

1. When did you discover carp fishing and how did you come to be here at the lake?

I fished for carp since the age of 5 or 6, in South Africa. Since then I’ve fished for several sponsors, including Nash and Sticky Baits.

It was always my objective to have my own lake, and I finally found what is now The Golden Carp Lake, in 2014, after living in France since 2004.

2. What’s the best and worst part of being the owner?

Best part? Definitely seeing clients breaking their PB’S with 50’s, 60’s and the occasional 70lber.

Worst part? Maintenance. A lot goes on on a daily basis, and behind the scenes. Something I was definitely naive about before owning my own lake.

3. What would you say is the best feature of your lake?

There are several standout features but the fish and the facilities sit firmly at the top of the list.

The carp are big healthy and stunning specimens and the facilities are exactly what I dreamed of during my years travelling and fishing across Europe.

4. When people arrive is there anything they are surprised by?

Definitely the size of the lake. It must come across as small online and on social media, as everyone always come out with “it’s a lot bigger than we imagined”.

5. What is the most common mistake you see anglers make at your lake?

Choosing swims before they arrive. Weather affects fish. The lake is big. With varying depths and features. The fish move dependant on all of these factors, and the time of year. It’s always best to get here, then choose a swim based on the movements of the fish at the time.
Oh, and bait. Big baits are essential! 14mm boilies and 6mm pellet are a sure-fire way to spend your time catching huge roach and bream! We sell a custom 15mm pellet that has proved itself for over 10 years now.
20mm hook baits and freebies are essential.

6. Finally, what is the one most important piece of advice you’d give to anglers visiting your lake soon?

I am here to help you catch fish. It’s frustrating for all when anglers arrive with a pre-determined strategy, bait and swim in mind. The lake and the fish are very particular. Be open to adapt, based on the help and information I can offer.

1. Sky Lake

Established in 2007, this is a 12 acre French carp lake that needs little introduction. Since hosting the Korda anglers twice for ‘Thinking Tackle’ episodes back in 2012, Sky Lake has cemented itself as a firm favourite for anglers looking to target big carp in France. The lake record now sits at over 81lb!

The lake is well stocked with approximately 600 carp, a whopping 50 or so of those are now over 50lb and there are currently 5 known carp over the 60lb mark. Swims are booked in advance here so you’ll need to decide which swim you’d like when you book. Although with a mix of 12 double and single swims for a maximum of 10 anglers, there is always a degree of flexibility.

It is fairly straight forward fishing here so, whilst it isn’t a runs water, the chance of an impressive new PB is very real indeed!

2. Beaurepaire

Beaurepaire has been a well kept secret by many who have fished it. It is a natural gravel pit, just 2½ hours from Calais that holds a good stock of carp to over 70lb. Most weeks see multiple 40lb+ carp on the bank, with plenty of the stock well over the 30lb mark.

It’s around 7 acres and would ideally suit a group of up to six anglers looking to book a lake exclusively… but individual bookings are welcome too. There are no designated swims but there’s plenty of room to bivvy up.

Beaurepaire is a great venue to consider if it’s your first trip to France because it’s got a really decent stock of carp and you are assured of a big welcome from the owners.

3. Deux Iles – Carp Fishing Lakes Near Calais

Deux Iles is beautiful 7 acre carp fishing lake settled within a 22 acre plot in the heart of the Eure Valley in Normandy, with carp to over 55lb.

The venue has been designed with four anglers in mind and there are two distinctly separate sections in the form of two islands, each well spaced from the other and with a cabin, because of this two anglers on each island will have as much room as they could wish for. You hire out an island and cabin for up to two anglers, or alternatively you can hire the lake exclusive and get the whole lake and both cabins for up to 4 anglers (5 at a push).

The lake is very rural, therefore there are no sounds of traffic or disturbance. It is situated a 2hr 45 drive from Calais and 1.5hr from Le Havre. Owner Bruno Simond is a well respected French carp angler, therefore you can benefit from excellent advice if wanted.

12 acre Seigneurie is a fantastic option in Northern France, offering four swims (two double and two single) and carp to over 70lb. The lake can be booked individually or also as a lake exclusive for groups of up to six anglers.

The fishing here is relatively straight forward so it is a good lake for a first French carp fishing trip.

It sits securely in a totally private 15 acre plot, with open grassy banks lined with mature willow trees. It holds around 350-400 carp in the lake, a good mix of commons and mirrors. The facilities here are excellent too because you have a modern cabin with kitchen facilities alongside the usual fridges, freezers and shower facilities.

5. Souvenirs – Carp Fishing near Calais

Souvenirs offers quality carp fishing close to Calais on a tranquil 75-year-old gravel pit. The lake is 10 acres for a maximum of 8 anglers and will really suit the thinking angler that likes natural surroundings. It’s 2hr 45 from Calais with an easy run straight down the autoroute on the A26.

There’s an interesting mix of around 230 beautiful carp to over 52lb, including over 72 carp sourced from the famous Euro Aqua.

6. Cerises

Cerises is a 3 acre carp lake offering a lake exclusive perfect for groups of 2-3 anglers (4 at a push).

An added bonus is the lakeside lodge situated behind the main double swim. This is included in your booking and provides very simple but clean accommodation sleeping up to 4 people. An outdoor dining area with a lovely view of the lake tops it off, perfect for sharing meals whilst waiting for the next run.

The carp here range from doubles to 30lb+, with a current lake record of 52lb. If you’re a group looking for straightforward carp fishing with the chance of a big carp on the bank then it’s the perfect choice. It is a great place to take less experienced anglers or to introduce the kids to fishing in France – locating the carp is fairly easy and it generally provides plenty of action.

7. Duquesne

Duquesne is the newest lake from the owners of the ever popular Cerises. This attractive 5 acre lake is just under three hours from Calais that offers easy going and enjoyable fishing for up to four anglers on an exclusive hire basis.

Set in peaceful French countryside the venue features four generous double swims and a simple but very comfortable lakeside cabin with terrace where you can relax, cook and keep an eye on your rods.

The lake holds a lively and varied stock with commons and mirrors exceeding 30lb and a current lake record of around 48lb. A small number of koi sturgeon and catfish add extra variety to the fishing.
