RELAXERS

Lets Talk Relaxers aka " The Creamy Crack". To most African American women, this is a hairstyle life saver. Relaxers allow us to manipulate the hair is various ways to create a certain look and keep it. Straight flowing hair is actually the desired result. Smooth edges, disappearing kinks ( just to name a few ) are technically the real results we are looking for post relaxer.

Most relaxers, contain a chemical called sodium hydroxide ( LYE). When the manufacturers say that a relaxer is "NO LYE" they are leading you to believe that there are no chemicals. That is not the truth. All this mean is that it is replaced by another chemical which is usually lithium.

Understand that , relaxers are not a choice but they are a high maintenance. Once a relaxer is applied, it never stops working. The neutralizer ( shampoo) allows the ph to balance enough to slow the process down to almost non existent . This is the reason why as the hair strands get older you may experience dryness or breakage if the hair isn't reconstructed properly.

The bottom line is, this should never be serviced by anyone other than a licensed professional !

Consumers who relax their hair generally turn to alkali relaxers formulated with sodium hydroxide, guanidine hydroxide (commonly called no-lye relaxers, they have a slightly lower pH of 9) or thioglycolate-based formulas. Relaxers are one of the most potent alkali chemicals you can use on your hair. They raise the pH of the hair so that the structure of the hair can be altered by the other ingredients of the treatment. Peptide bonds create the strength in the hair. The purpose of relaxers is to break down the peptide bonds. When the bonds are broken down the hair straightens because it’s strength is now compromised.

The active ingredients in the majority of relaxers have a pH of approximately 13+. This is very alkaline (a neutral pH is "7", "0" is very acid, "14" is extremely alkaline). Relaxers also deplete the hair of essential fatty acids normally found in the scalps natural oil, sebum. This can result in –thinning of the hair –damage to the hair – breakage to the hair – discoloration to the hair – dryness to the hair – brittleness to the hair. This is why it is very important to visit a professional stylist bi weekly or at least monthly in order to receive treatments that will strengthen the hair to its max.

Foundations

Choose a foundation, concealer and powder that work for you. If you're black, you may need a slightly darker shade for the summertime than for the winter. Avoid getting a color that is too light.

Look for bold pink and red blushes that match nicely with the naturally flushed color of your dark skin.

Play up your heritage with your eyes. Use brown or black eyeliners for definition and mascaras and eye shadows that will complement your brown eyes. Plums, browns and burgundies work best for you. Avoid light shadow colors.

Choose plums, mauves and browns for lip colors. Avoid pinks, light colors and oranges, as they will not complement your skin tone in most cases.

Stay away from lip pencils in most cases, as you'll tend to have fuller lips alread

Define and darken your eyebrows with a brown pencil matching your natural hair color.

Test all products at a makeup counter before purchase.

I get the best results with natural oil products, they are concentrated and do exactly what they are designed to do. Petroleum based oils ( Grease ) are very waxy and weigh the hair down, although they can be filled with essential oils but the base product is still petroleum.
