How to Password Protect Word 2010 Document (Option 1)

Do you have some confidential information in your Microsoft Word 2010 documents that you don’t want anyone other then yourself to open? If your answer is yes, then follow the steps below and password protect your Microsoft Word 2010 document using Microsoft's built-in encryption feature.

Step 1: Open Microsoft Word 2010 document. Click on File Tab
Step 2: Click on Info option.

Step 3: Click on the Protect Document button under Permissions tab.
Step 4: Select the Encrypt with Password option.

Step 5: A window will pop up asking you to put in the desired password. Set a Password for Word document and click “OK” button.

Step 6: It’ll again ask to “Re-enter password”, so type it again and click “OK” button.

After password protecting your document, save the changes by pressing CTRL+S Buttons from your keyboard or go to File Tab of your document and click Save option.

Your document is now password protected and fully secured. You can see the following message under Permissions “Password is required to open the following Document”.

To Open Password Protected Documents

To open your password protected document simply double click the document and a pop up box will appear and prompt you to enter the password. Simply enter the password that you have set-up for this file and and click “OK”

How to Remove Password from a Word 2010 Document

Step 1: Open Password Protected Microsoft Word 2010 document. Click on File Tab
Step 2: Click on Info option.

Step 3:Click on the Protect Document button under Permissions tab.
Step 4: Select the Encrypt with Password option.

Step 5: A window will pop up which will contains your file’s password, simply select the password and delete it and click “OK” button

Save the changes by pressing CTRL+S Buttons from your keyboard or go to File Tab of your document and click Save option.

Your document is now password free and open for everyone to read and edit. You can see the following message under Permissions “Anyone can open, copy, and change any part of this document”.

How to Create Table of Contents in Word 2010

A table of contents provides a quick reference point for your document, giving you the reader a brief overview or outline of where to find what content.

Follow few simple steps below:

Step 1: Prepare your document in Microsoft Word. Make sure the documents has headings.

Step 2: Click on Styles arrow to show the Style windows, see screenshot below.

Step 3 Now start applying styles to headings and sub headings according to its level.

In my example Heading 1 is my chapter heading.

Step 4: To put table of content at the beginning of the document put your cursor at the beginning of the document and click Insert tab and click the blank page button.

Step 5: Click on References tab and than Table of Contents. Choose the format you like your table of content to appear and click it.

Updating The Table Of Contents

Quite often you will insert a table of contents and find that you need to change some of the document’s content. Once you do make the changes the table of content doesn't reflect the correct content that is present in the document. To update the table of contents so that it reflects what really is in the document, select it by clicking in it and you should see a tab appear at the top.

Click on the Update Table option and then select whether you want to update page numbers only, or to update the entire table.

Reason 6: Use Keyboard Shortcuts

Using the mouse, you can drag and dock windows to either side of the screen, or drag it to the top to maximize it. These keyboard shortcuts are even faster:

Win+Left Arrow and Win+Right Arrow dock the window to the left and right side of the screen
Win+Up Arrow and Win+Down Arrow maximize and restore/minimize
Win+M minimizes everything
Alt+Up, Alt+Left Arrow, Alt+Right Arrow navigate to parent folder, or browse Back and Forward through folders in Explorer
Win+Home minimizes/restores all open windows except the active window
Alt+Win+# accesses the Jump List of program number ‘#’ on the taskbar

How to Increase Number of Undo in PowerPoint 2010

As a student of business administration I get many projects in which I have to make countless presentations. Many times those presentations are rushed and prone to mistakes. In the small time frame given to me if I make a big mistake it is difficult to restart the process of making the presentation so I try to use the undo button. Much to often I run out of undo steps and can't change the original mistake by the click of one button. Now I know a way to increase the undo steps and so I thought I might share it with the world.

Follow the simple steps below:

Step 1: Open PowerPoint 2010 and click the File tab
Step 2: Choose Option

Step 3: Click the Advance tab.
Step 4: On the right side of advance tab change the Maximum number of undos from 20 to 30 or whatever number you prefer.
Step 5: Click OK

How to Format Hard Drive and Reinstall Windows XP (Full Step by Step Tutorial)

This tutorial explains in a detailed 15 easy step-by-step procedure on how to format your hard drive partition and reinstall Windows XP using the Windows XP installation CD.

This tutorial is created by me only. I have really worked hard on this post as I do in every other post so I have one request. Please show your appreciation by not stealing this post and do not copying it as is without giving me the credit for it. I would really appreciate it. Thank You!

Before you start this procedure.

Make sure to back up your data: First, make sure there is absolutely NOTHING you cannot afford to lose on the drive you're going to install Windows on (let's say the C: drive.)
Make sure your network cable is unplugged from the wall (to avoid getting viruses from your local area network).
You have a Windows XP installation CD with a valid Product Key.
Hardware driver discs that shipped with the PC and any components you added on
Time & Patience (you need to be calm and give the setup a little time)

Step 1: Insert the Windows XP CD into your CD-ROM drive and restart your computer.

Step 2: The computer will prompt you to press any key to boot from the CD. Press a key on the keyboard to start the Windows Setup.

The computer will load the setup files automatically. This may take few minutes.

Next you will prepare your hard drive for the installation of Windows. you will see the list of hard drives and its partitions.
Step 3: Delete the partition prefix C: To do this select the partition and press the button D.

Step 4: Steup will warn you that this is a system partition. Press Enter

Step 5: To complete the removal of the partition, Press L when you see the screen below.

Step 6: You will return to the partition list. There should be unpartitioned space item on the list. highlight the unpartitioned space and press Enter.

Step 7: You will be asked to select the format of partition you wan to use for your hard drive. I recommend to select NTFS (Quick). Press Enter to continue.

Setup will format the drive according to the preferences chosen in the previous option. This may take few minutes. After this process is done your hard drive will be completely empty.

Now windows setup will copy the files from the CD that will be needed to install Windows XP. This will take several minutes so please be patient.

After the files have been copied, Windows setup will restart your computer. Don’t remove the Windows XP setup CD, and don’t press a key when prompted (we already did that).

Step 8: Setup will ask for your name or the company name. Type in your name.

Step 9: At the next screen, you will be prompted to enter that oh-so-important CD-key, which is located on the back of the sleeve or it should be packed with the license agreement. Enter it carefully (if you make a typo it will not work, but you can return and correct it). The letters will automatically be capitalized.

Step 10: Setup will ask for you to assign Computer name. Please type that in.

Step 11: Setup will ask for current day and time. Make sure you check the date and time and see if its correct or not and then click next. Setup will continue to install windows setup. This may take good bit of time so be patient.

Once setup has installed Windows it will take you to a welcome screen.

Step 12: You will be given option to help protect the pc by turning on the automatic update. I recommend you choose Help protect my pc by turning on Automatic Update now.(This option can be changed later on).

Step 13: Windows will ask you to register Windows XP. Choose No, not at this time

Step 14: Window will now make an attempt to connect to the internet. Click the little skip button at the bottom right.

Step 15: Setup will ask you to type the name of the person using this computer. Fill in the name of the person using this computer that you want and click next.

Finaly you will be flashed with a Thank You! screen. Click Next and your all done for the formatting and reinstalling part!

Congratulations! You have successfully installed Windows. You are now one-step above every person in society that has not installed Windows. You can pat yourself at the back for being so patient throughout the installation. You did it!

Indian Navy proud of Pakistan’s JF-17 Thunder

Indian Navy’s three page PR publication in the popular national newspaper carried a big blunder this Sunday. The title “Guardians of the Sea” showed an Pakistani J-17 Thunder Jet fighter instead of Harriers fighter aircraft. This mistake was carried forward in the next two pages of the newspaper also. There has been no official word from the navy on the issue. December 4, which fell in this Sunday, is celebrated as Navy Day in India.

The PAC JF-17 Thunder (Urdu: تھنڈر), is a light-weight, single-engine, multi-role combat aircraft developed jointly by the Chengdu Aircraft Industries Corporation (CAC) of China, the Pakistan Air Force and the Pakistan Aeronautical Complex (PAC). Microsoft PowerPoint 2010 includes a powerful feature to instantly broadcast your PowerPoint 2010 live to a remote viewer anywhere around the world over the internet for free. The presentation shared over the web can be seen even if the viewer does not have PowerPoint installed, all they would need a web browser like Internet Explorer, Firefox, or Chrome.

To broadcast a Presentation over web :

Step 1: Open the presentation you want to broadcast.
Step 2: Navigate to File click Save & Send in the menu
Step 3: Select Broadcast Slide show from the Save & Send tab
Step 4: Click Broadcast Slide Show

Step 5: Click start broadcast button on the Broadcast slide show Window

PowerPoint 2010 will connect to PowerPoint broadcast service & generate a backend code for you to share with others, to allow them to view the presentation in their web browser.

After the broadcast is prepared a Windows with presentation link would be created . You can distribute this link to all remote audience with whom you wish to share the presentation.

Please read this sentence carefully and understand what it means. Click Start Slide Show button to start the presentation . Now play the presentation on your local computer in full screen mode and as you change slides locally, the same will happen on the screens of your remote audience hence the term "Live broadcast".
If you don't play the presentation in full screen mode and don't change the slides then nothing will happen to the screen of the remote viewer as well.

Opening a PowerPoint in Office 2010.
Slide Show tab and click Broadcast Slide Show.

Tips : Anyone with the link to your slide show can view it!
Once you have started the broadcast of presentation , no changes can be made to it.

How To Take Screenshots from Word, Excel, PowerPoint inbuilt Tool

Microsoft Office 2010 has this amazing Built-In Screen Capture Tool through which screen shots of the currently open windows can be taken easily and attached in the document.

Taking Screenshots in Microsoft Office Word 2010 using inbuilt tool :

Step 1: Open a document in Microsoft Office Word 2010. Navigate to Insert tab

Step 2: Click on Screenshot button to take screenshot of active windows.

Tips: If you want to take a full snap of those active windows, then select the windows from the list.

Screen Clipping option can be selected to take a screenshot of selective area only and you can select the area to take screenshot.

Step 3: Save the screenshot on your computer by right click on image & selecting Save as Picture from menu

You can use Screenshot feature on other applications like PowerPoint and Excel on Office 2010. Here is the location of Screenshot Tool in these applications.

For Powerpoint 2010: Navigate to Insert tab.Click on Screenshot button.

2 Windows Easter Eggs You Have To See

What is the square root of four? The answer is two,

And what do you get if you subtract two from two? Zero, right?

Now let’s do the above calculation using the Windows calculator. Type in 4, take the square root and from the result subtract 2. What do you get now?

Step 1: In calculator press 4
Step 2: Press the Sqrt button and you will get 2 which is the right answer.

Step 3: Press the - subtract button
Step 4: Press 2 (to subtract 2) and then
Step 5: Press = button.

Totally wrong answer!

For what I know the operation returns different numbers in different versions of Windows, so it’s possibly a bug by design or an Easter Egg and not some weird functional error. What was your result?

How To Convert A PowerPoint 2010 Presentation Into A Video

Now anyone can convert a PowerPoint presentations into a video with very ease. Just follow the easy steps bellow:

Step 1: After creating a presentation, select the File tab from the ribbon.
Step 2: In File tab select Save and Send
Step 3: Click on Create a Video.

Tips: Two drop downs options will be given to fine tune your ‘production’ for the media. It will also determines the file size. For instance, opting for Portable devices reduces the resolution. I find this quite handy if I have to carry along and watch a presentation on an iPod or a smartphone.

Tips: You can also add the recorded timings and narration to the video. You can also specify the time that will determine the transition from one slide to the next.

Step 4: Finally click on the large Create Video button and choose a location to save your video as a WMV file.

Tips: As the conversion to .wmv format begins there will be a progress bar displayed in the lower right corner of PowerPoint that indicates the pace.

How To Display Current Date And Time In A PowerPoint 2010

There is a simple way to add date and time to PowerPoint slides. To Show Date and Time on a Slide in PowerPoint 2010 follow the steps:

Step 1: Open your PowerPoint document and got to the View tab on the Ribbon.

Step 2: Choose the Normal view.

Step 3: Click on the Insert tab

Step 4: Click on the little Date and Time icon which gives you options to insert the current date and time into the PowerPoint document.

Step 5: Choose the date and time format from the drop-down. Selecting a fixed time acts as a marker that lets you know when the slide was created. It is obviously constant. The Update automatically selection displays a dynamic time that takes the current time from the system clock. The options are the same for the Notes and Handouts tab. (Preferably, don’t show the date and time on the title slide).

Step 6: Click Apply to All.

Tips: Remember: Each time you open or print the presentation, only then PowerPoint 2010 will update the time. PowerPoint does not continuously update automatically but only at the start of the slide show.
You can also add current date and time to the notes and handouts you print. Select the Notes and Handouts tab and follow the instructions.

How To Change Virtual Memory in Windows XP

One of the most important parts of the computer is the RAM( Random Access Memory). Your information is stored in RAM before being accessed by any other part of the computer. You computers keep a part of the memory disk as virtual memory in case your RAM runs out or starts to slow down the computer. Virtual Memory is an option you can use to give your computer a "little extra" memory, which can help speed things up if most of your RAM is being used up. The only downside to this method is that your virtual memory uses space on your hard disk to give you that little bit extra speed. To change the virtual memory in windows follow these steps:

Step 1: Right click on My Computer and select Properties.

Step 2: Go to the Advanced tab in the section titled Performance, and select Settings.

Step 3: In the new window, select the Advanced tab. Down at the bottom there will be a section titled Virtual Memory. Select Change.

There will be two spaces where you can change the amount of virtual memory you want to use. It is listed in megabytes (MB) so you want to take how many gigabytes (GB) that you are interested in using and multiply that number by 1024. This will give you the amount in MB.

Step 4: Make sure you have the custom size option selected and input the amount of MB you want to dedicate to virtual memory. After that, just click ok and apply and there you go. You just changed your virtual memory and helped give your PC an option to rely on should you run out of RAM.

Step 5: Click on the "Ok" button.

Tip: Restart the computer for the changes to go into effect.

Apple has released a statement that the former CEO, co-founder and chairman of the board Steve Jobs has passed away. Jobs died at aged 56 from a rare form of pancreatic cancer since 2004.

I think of Steve job as a rebel. I am no Apple fan but I think he was a person with guts. He had the guts to do what he wanted, how he wanted and be damn good at it. What do you do when the street in front of your house is filled with water. The city management is oblivious to this problem and doesn't come to the rescue. Your kids are all cooped up in the house and no where for them to play.

Tip #2 The kids are bugging you to play with them. Inflate some of the water tubes, floaties, & water lounge that you have saved for your summer vacation to the water parks and let the kids play in the standing water in the street. At lease they will be playing in front of your eyes.

Did you know that Microsoft Word 2010 can read your document aloud to you? I didn't until few weeks ago. Today I am going to tell you how to use that excellent Microsoft Word 2010 feature. Just follow the following simple steps:

Tip: The text is spoken using a very robotic sounding voice, but at least you can proof “read” your document with your eyes closed!

Step 1: Open your Microsoft Word 2010 document.

Step 2: Go to File Tab and select Options

Step 3: A dialog box will open. Select Quick Access Toolbar from opened dialog box.

Step 4: Select Commands Not in the Ribbon option from drop down menu under Choose Command From.

Step 5: Then scroll down in the box under drop down menu and select Speak option. Now click Add Button to add Speak option to Quick Access Toolbar at upper left corner of Microsoft Word 2010 document and in the end, click OK button to save the changes.

Step 6: Now you can see that Speak Button is added to Quick Access Toolbar at upper left corner of Microsoft Word 2010 document. Now all you have to do is to press the Speak button using any document to hand. Select the text that you want Word to read and then click the Speak button. Behold! Word reads the text to you.

When you click the Speak button, it changes into the Stop speaking selected text button

One draw back: when you stop the text speech using this button and then resume by clicking the button again, speech begins at the start of the text again – not where you stopped.

Step 1: Go to START and click Run

Step 2: Enter regedit and hit enter to open the Registry Editor

Step 3: Find the following location:

+CLSID (Click the plus sign on the left)

+{645FF040-5081-101B-9F08-00AA002F954E} (Click the plus sign on the left)

Step 4: Double click LocalizedString

Step 5: Enter your desired name for the Recycle Bin into the empty space called 'Value Data'. When you have entered what you would like click 'OK'.

Step 6: Close the Registry Editor.

Tips:
Make sure to backup a copy of your registry before editing any registry entries. To do so, go to FILE and click Export... under the Registry Editor window.

In Windows XP you can not create a folder by the name of CON

The why:

It’s pretty simple, Con is a reserved name from the early days from DOS, it stands for the “CONSOLE” I/O device, Since it is already used by the system. If we create one with some evil tricks then the system will get confused. There will be an ambiguity.

Like Con, many other reserve words are there which we can’t create. They are
PRN - It stands for printer.
AUX - It stands for Auxiliary device.
COM0, COM1, COM2, COM3, COM4, COM5, COM6, COM7, COM8, COM9 - They stands for serial ports.

NUL - It stands for Bid Bucket.
LPT1, LPT2 - They stands for Parallel ports.

Open an empty notepad file
Type "Bush hid the facts" (without the quotes)
Save it as whatever you want.
Close it, and re-open it.

The why:

Bush hid the facts is a common name for a bug present in the function IsTextUnicode of Microsoft Windows, which causes a file of text encoded in Windows-1252 or similar encoding to be interpreted as if it were UTF-16LE, resulting in mojibake. When "Bush hid the facts" is put in a new Notepad document and saved, closed, and reopened, the words "畂桳栠摩琠敨映捡獴" (Liu Benrenmotian Touyingjianmeng) appear instead.

How to display word count in Microsoft Word 2010

If you are working on an academic paper like I do, you may need to know if your word document meets a certain length requirements. There are three ways to count your document's word count.

To know the current word count of a document, open the document and right click on the status bar at the bottom of the Word 2010 window. The context menu which comes up will have an entry named “Word Count” which will tell you the current word count.

Click on “Word Count” and you can then have the count displayed in the status bar at all times.

If you want to find the word count of a particular paragraph or a line, Just select that portion of text and you will be able to see the word count in the status bar.

For more detailed information about your document’s word count, follow these steps:

Open the Review ribbon
Click Word Count in the Proofing section
