I took the family down on a short road trip this past weekend with plans of seeing the Hot Air Balloon Rally that was scheduled to take place at The Rock Ranch in The Rock, Georgia. I’ve always loved hot air balloons, but I had never before seen one in person, and this was going to be my first opportunity.

Unfortunately, both the rally and the races scheduled for the day had to be cancelled due to excessive wind, but the day was not a total waste, as a handful of the participants stuck around for the entire day, and we were able to at least see some of the balloons during the late evening hours, despite their not being able to leave the ground.

Below are a few of the photos from the afternoon, and I’ve got another balloon rally on my calendar for next month, so hopefully we’ll fare better then.

Late last week, I was able to spend a few hours walking around the city of Sparta located in middle Georgia. The town has a rich antebellum history prior to World War I, but since then has fallen on extremely hard times. The city is the county seat of Hancock County, which is considered to be the poorest county in the state.

The focus of this series for me was both an exploration of the historic architecture of the city, as well as to showcase the current plight of the city and its citizenry. Below is a small sample of the series, which can be viewed in its entirety on its gallery page.

The newest issue of the ASMP Bulletin is now available, and I am happy to report that one of my photos from the Energy of Illness series that I started as part of the Young Photographers Alliance mentoring program is one of the featured images.

It is an honor to be chosen as one of their featured photographers out of the fifty-nine participants that took part in this program, and I hope to keep up the momentum from this going forward. My photo is on the third page of the pages listed here, along with the cover and the story itself.

Well, I’m a few days late posting this, but rest assured I did make it the full thirty days. Today, Monday, October 3, has been the first day since August that I have not taken any photographs at all. When I started this my goal was to see if I would be able to find time to shoot consistently everyday, and although there were a few days in there where I seriously debated not bothering with it, I stuck to it, and I am happy to call this project a success (the quality of the images are another story).

For day 30, I have put together a short story board of how I spent that final night of the project. It was Friday night, and as usual, was just hanging out at home, exhausted from working all week and chasing around two small kids. I’m not much of a television watcher, so instead of vegging out on the couch, the lady and I tossed on a playlist of Hendrix, CCR, and Pink Floyd and reignited our old rummy rivalry.

I haven’t given much thought to my next project yet, but if you’re reading this on the website, you’ve probably noticed that I’ve redesigned the site. Most likely, I’ll be focusing my attention on finalizing this redesign for the next few days while I toss around some ideas for the next thing I want to focus on doing.

Til then…

Last Friday, the lady of the house changed jobs at her company. One of her co-workers was kind enough to give her a bouquet of flowers that have since been sitting on our dining room table. While some of the flowers are still doing pretty well for being a week old, the roses in the bouquet are already pretty much well on their way to being completely dried out.

For day 29, I grabbed a few photos of the bouquet, focusing primarily on the change that the roses are experiencing.

I had a couple of ideas that I wanted to try out for day 27, but since I was still trying to deal with issues from the weekend, as well as work problems, I didn’t have much time to focus on this challenge. For the past several weeks, I’ve been trying to focus my photography (not related to this project) on an idea of minimal expression. I wanted to build on that idea with day 27 and shoot something that I pass in my neighborhood at least twice a day, but is only visible during the day. I leave for work in the mornings before sunrise, and yesterday wasn’t home until sunset, so I wasn’t able to get the photo that I had hoped. At the time that I wanted to be out shooting my idea, I was stuck at a gas station, so that’s what I ended up shooting for day 27′s straight out of the camera and favorite edit.

I did this shot from a couple of different angles, but each time the background was distracting to me, so in my edit, I mainly focused on trying to tone that down, but other than that, I didn’t spend too much time on this one.
