Bulga Company Story Opens Tomorrow July 15th in NYC: BAGTRENDS

I'm excited to announce that tomorrow you'll be able to enter the full world of Bulga as they launch their first company shop. The store will offer a range of merchandise from handbags and small leather goods to Bulga's line of denim. There will also be special bags, that will be sold exclusively at this VIP location. All gift purchases will be wrapped and shipped at Bulga’s expense and dropped off same day (if purchased in New York, of course). This is a soft opening and you're hearing it here first, so don't forget to mention my name or BagTrends when you pop in.

You'll never see me put it on the floor in the subway. It goes on my lap. While on the streets, if I need to grab something from inside I prop my bag onto a surface or balance the base with one hand. But, when you're at a restaurant what is a girl to do? You can put it behind your back - that's not very comfy. You can swing it from you chair - but that's an easy take for thieves. That's why I always use a purse hook. There are plenty on the market these days ranging from $10 to $100! The issue with many hooks it that they are either really ugly or beyond juvenile. Really, I need a pink circle with white hearts on it staring at me while I eat Miso Glazed Halibut at Asia de Cuba? Which brings me to Pavina Handbag Holders. A few weeks ago, I was sent The Ladybug handbag hook made from metal and decorated with enamel and Swarovski crystals. At $60 it's certainly on the more expensive side, but it's a very strong piece, a work of art and you really only need one so splurge a little and get something truly special. Consider it jewelry for your handbag. You've earned it. Oh, and each hook comes in it's own pouch for easy storage in your handbag. I even keep extra business cards in this case.

I got a call last night from my friend Jenny from Charm and Luck / Calla bags. She has a very cool bag/jewelry combo showcasing on HSN at 9am today. It will be a host pick and once you take a look you'll understand why. This Convertible Clutch with 4 Necklace Set can be worn in countless ways - Jenny counted over 70 combos. We went over them on the phone and it's really amazing. Where the bag with any of the chains for a purse look. Where the chain ultra long for a of-the-moment look that's spot on! Last night, Michelle and I went to a charity event co-hosted by Tinsley Mortimer at the Samantha Thavasa NYC boutique. The gathering was orchestrated to raise money and awareness for NYC Shiba Rescue, an organization that rescues and houses Shiba Inu dogs with a foster family until a permanent home can be found. 10% of all sales made last night went to this wonderful organization. Some guests even came with their Shiba dogs. Friendly dogs, great bags ... what more does a gal need?

How about a wickedly fabulous dress. This black frock I'm wearing is from Karen Millen, a UK based designer I'm beyond obsessed with. I walked by her shop in Short H ills Mall last weekend and flipped. The looks sizzle, the prices aren't that bad and she does accessories too. Thanks again to Saba at Factory PR for the loner - I'll be buying this sample at the close of the season. The evening's look was rounded out with Ruthie Davis pumps (again - I have to buy more!) and a pop of pink from my Teich clutch. In case you are wondering (hehe) that's Michelle at the far right in Victor&Rolf for H&M and the lovely Tinsley Mortimer in the middle.

Roaming Around with Michael Rome and His Affordable Handbags: BAGTRENDS

Last Tuesday I had the pleasure of catching up with handbag designer Michael Rome whom I met several months ago at the HSN studios. Michael is the charming Florentine behind the handbag line that bares his name. His selection of classic crocodile embossed satchels and totes (and now a growing selection of softer leather and trendy detailing) are best sellers on HSN. Best of all, these Italian-made handbags are all real leather and retail mostly under $145. Amazing, I know! Getting to know Michael over afternoon tea at his showroom was a treat - considering I have a soft spot for all things Italian. His New York showroom welcomes you with a glorious portrait of Florence's most famous square, Piazza della Signoria, from the beginning of the 20th century. Michael's own home is just minutes away from the square ... hey Michael can I come along on the next trip to the factory? (It would make for a fabulous story!!) Well, maybe that can't be arranged over one afternoon, but I was delighted to get this soft grey hobo upon departing ($120 on HSN.com) and be able to snap away previews of the fall collection. Dirty "porno" colors (yes that's actually how I have been referring to these colors in the professional setting - it is what it is) of cognac, mustard, pumpkin orange, bourbon, and all kinds of browns dominate the season - keep an eye out for this major color wave for fall. Michael also has some options that work for the "rocker glam" trend that will sizzle well into holiday 2009. Enjoy.

What To Wear, Black Halo Dresses for BagTrends.com Samantha Thavasa Party: BAGTRENDS

Dear Bagistas,

If you've been following me on twitter you know that this has been a very rough week, to put it mildly. Tonight in order to distract my mom, we played dress up and tried to decide which Black Halo dress I should wear to tomorrow's Samantha Thavasa party hosted by BagTrends.com. My face is blocked - no reason to scare everyone! While trying the dresses on, I realized how much weight I lost this week. Family emergencies are the new detox diet - one I hope you never experience. But, I digress. So non of the size 2 dresses fit quite right, although #2 wasn't that bad and #3 can work with some sticky tape to keep the ladies in place. I'm a huge Back Halo fan and it's a real treat to be able to borrow their dresses. Every celebrity from SJP to Brooke Shields has worn their body-hugging dresses and this season's must-have jump suite. A big thank you to Saba at Factory PR for making my fashion dreams come true. She'll certainly kill me when I call tomorrow to see if they have a smaller size. I'd also LOVE if they have #3 in other colors. But why don't you decide what I should wear?

New Bag-a-licious Video and Beta Launch of BagTrends TV: BAGTRENDS

Have you noticed all the fabulousness going on at BagTrends.com, especially our new videos? They are still in beta form, but we're just so excited to start getting them up. We're rolling out bag-a-licious Friday segments first, but more is to come. I'll also be shooting a fun intro video, then we'll add music and using our tripod. I hope you enjoy them. Today's video comes from the summer collection of Gustto. I love this yellow clutch. It's that perfect yellow that isn't off putting and works so amazingly well with white and summer purples. And, just to prove that yes I do in fact test drive every single bag-a-licious bag, here's a shot of me with Michelle at the recent White House Black Market Fall 2009 preview event. Are you not loving it?

FYI my fab purple top came from Saks ($30!) and Michelle's white jeans are Seven For All Mankind $20 at Annie Sez. If bargain shopping were a sport, Michelle and would definitely medal.

Anya Hindmarch Hosts Physique 57 Gym Class, Bags and Biceps Make For Bag-a-licious Night: BAGTRENDS

Dear Bagistas,

I'm writing to you from my PJs now post a relaxing bath, lathering up with Votre Vu's Tatre D'Amande (which you can WIN at BagTrends.com) and moisturizing my face with Elizabeth Arden's Intervene Stress Recovery Night Cream - this all post a very intense work out hosted by the US public relations team for Anya Hindmarch. Dubbed "Anya's Gym Class, Bags + Biceps", the idea came about after Anya began to organize gym classes for her staff in London. Here in New York it's sort of a "thank you" to friends in the media/industry that support the handbag (or actually I should say growing lifestyle brand - they make clothing and shoes.) The Anya Hindmarch ny showroom hosts various gym classes every other week or so and tonight's was a sample of Physique 57. I had no idea what this was going to be about until Michelle began raving, "Oh, that's the Kelly Ripa class ... it's amazing ... you're going to love it." Not being a gym gal, I have to say I did very much love the unique movements, the intensity and the energy of the instructor Shelly Knight. I wont go into the details of what this class is based on, but you can read all about it on their site. Give it a try - you may just see me at their Soho location soon. The evening capped off with a nutrition talk courtesy of the team from Nu-Train. I was hoping to learn some great cooking recipes, but I got more tips on great drinks - which is valuable too! In any event, it was a delightful treat. A thank you to Ashley from Anya Hindmarch for putting it all together. Before departing, I picked up a few bags to feature in an upcoming bag-a-licious video and spent some time playing around with Anya Hindmarch's new coats - sorry PETA, but the fur is divine.

Elliott Lucca Handbags Great Style at Reasonable Prices: BAGTRENDS

OK, so define reasonable? To some spending more than $50 for a handbag is unthinkable. To other's the idea of snagging a leather bag under $500 is an amazing deal. Still others - and these gals still exist - can't imagine anything more fabulous than a $7000 Hermes Birkin or a $2000 exotic tote from Nancy Gonzalez. I get all of you ladies and there really is something ideal for everyone's budget if you do your homework. As the title of this post suggests, I use the word "reasonable" with Elliott Lucca because I know how expensive leather is and how much it costs to do weaving well (think Bottega Veneta prices of $1000+) which is a signature of Elliott Lucca. Now, their bags are made in China which is unfortunate when we really need to keep manufacturing jobs in the United States. But, as someone who owns five! of Elliott Lucca handbags I can vouch for the durability of their products and the beauty of the design.

This week, I received a pre-ordered early fall 2009 Elliott Lucca drawstring bucket bag. I've been fixated on this style for about two season's and keep telling everyone (and now you all) that drawstring is going to be the look of fall 2009 and even push into spring 2010. It's the inevitable pull towards a more casual style that we have not seen in a few seasons (but still many of us can do and will do a drawstring on a more sophisticated two-handle shoulder bag). Take a look, for example at this Valencia Draw Tote on the left from the current season - I own this one too. I'd take a picture of my own, but I let Michelle borrow it for a few weeks. It's a great example of drawstring, but on a sharp, more structured body. This bag rocks for work. The honeydew color is truly yummy.

Carlos Falchi Handbags Brand Purchased by Private Investment Firm: BAGTRENDS

Dear Bagistas,

This just in:
Windsong Brands and Marvin Traub Associates have acquired the Carlos Falchi handbag brand and created Falchi Holdings LLC. The king of exotic skin handbags will remain chief designer and creative director of Falchi Holdings LLC which I hope means the vision and passion put into each handbag will remain in tact. I'm a devoted follower and admirer of Mr. Falchi's work and creative force and hope this shift of power will only lead to positive change for the 37-year-old brand. It's actually quite amazing that the company was able to remain independent for so many years. Hopefully, the next chapter of Carlos Falchi will include freestanding stores and perhaps an expansion into shoes.

I once had the pleasure of interviewing Mr. Falchi at his New York City design studio and it was just a dream come true and probably one of my most memorable one-on-ones with a designer. Mr. Falchi was warm and open, sharing personal stories of how he started out in the business and quickly gained a following in the music industry; how he counts Cher as a close friend; and how he views colors ... "I can taste color. Ummm," he mused. I wish him and the new firm much success and look forward to seeing what the future has in store for Carlos Falchi.

Fullum and Holt Bags Launch, plus Mandee To The Rescue Again: BAGTRENDS

Last Tuesday, after having lunch with a new PR friend Ali, I heading up to Ali's office to check out her new handbag client Fullum and Holt. The company is actually a 111-year-old Montreal-based leather goods brand that has crafted products for everyone from the Canadian Armed Forces to John Varvatos and Alexander Wang. Finally out on their own, I found the Fullum and Holt collection to be restrained simplicity. There's no trend-chasing here, no over-the-top it bag and no bold colors. What there is, is great leather shaped into easy-to-wear styles that one won't easily get board of. My personal favorite is the Fullum Shoulder Bag. That's me in the fashion closet at BNC PR with the bag and a painting of Dita von Tess as the backdrop. Before departing, Ali gifted me a pair of dark, super soft, skinny Hudson jeans with inner zippers on the bottom because I mentioned during lunch that I don't wear jeans. How sweat is that? PS I now wear these jeans and feel very cool and fabulous! I may just be a closet jean lover (shhh don't tell all my dresses!) Snag your own pair at shopbop.com.

After that, I was off to Parsons to board a luxury limo bus to New Jersey to preview the new Mandee concept store. Note to self: Never go on these types of trips again. Between leaving my previous appointment and finally getting home, this press trip took nearly 5hrs! I loved the pr girls that hosting this event - kudos to the Bromley Group - they did a nice job of packing the cutest lunch bag goodies, gifting everyone a $100 to shop and pouring wine in the limo. But, the traffic was dreadful and there were too many delays which mildly dampened my mood. Forging ahead, once at Mandee I liked the fashion show vibe shoppers will experience, as well as the interpretation of key trends at very affordable prices. My one question: who are they appealing to? I see the Mandee girl as a young 12-18-year-old, but many of the looks were just too sexy for that age group. Call me a prude, but I wouldn't want to see my young daughters (some day) in such looks. Maybe the new Mandee is chasing after an older demographic of say 16-24. In which case there are certainly thrifty pieces to enjoy. For my $100 I was able to buy 2 dresses, a tank top and some bangles. Mandee might not be the place to go for high-brow looks, but if you want to play around with trends and purchase something you don't necessarily care to wear next season (because it's uber trendy and may not last too many wears), it's a good stop. I would go hear for your must-have light-weight scarves, your costume jewelry (which was VERY recession friendly) and silly/naughty undies. You can also grab one fun maxi dress for $30. In the bag department, I was happy to see a few goodies that I'll probably be using for future look for less TV segments - keep an eye out for those!

Burju Shoe Launch, Carson Kressley's Spring Picks from NY and Company: BAGTRENDS

Dear Bagistas,

I call this blog "My Bag-a-licious Life", but rarely do I share with you how lucky and bag-a-licious life really is. So, I'm going to try and make a point to share more scoop not just about great bags, but the parties/previews/swag/and celeb shenanigans I encounter. I may also protest from time to time about the realities of not living in the city - ya sorry to burst that bubble in case you thought I lived in Manhattan. I'm a white picket fence kid of gal with dreams of having a bun in the oven soon. Any who, Tuesday was chock full of night-time events and I've made it a point to start going more often - at least 3 nights a month no matter how much is going in!

First up on Tuesday was a 4pm Dooney & Burke fall 2009 preview that I skipped because I got pulled into a conference call. Once in my car, I was off to a 5:30pm Accessories Council event which I too had to skip because I got a call at 5:15pm that I had to take. So, there I was a few block away from the venue, sitting in my car working.

By 5:50pm I was done with my calls, missed another event and had to jet to the Burju Shoe Launch at Nest Lounge. The event was orchestrated by my new friend (who followed me on twitter and spotted me during a fashion week party!) Alyson Campbell of AMP3 Public Relations. These sizzling heals are the brain child of professional salsa dancer, Burju Perez, - that's her in the sassy fuchsia pink dress. I'm a big lover of anything Latin so the Salsa music, the bold colors of the shoes, the life, the energy of the fashion shoes, the curvy models ... it was great. Many of the guests were placing orders - who wouldn't with a 20% discount and the ability to customize styles. After mingling with LookOnline.com's Adrienne Weinfeld-Berg, SheFinds.com's CEO Michelle Madhock, HerPResign's Michelle Slaughter (who recognized me from twitter), and PR guy Jeremy Logan-Cavendish I was off again.

By 7pm Jeremy and I were in my car heading to the Rivington Hotel for New York & Company’s Spring Event hosted by Carson Kressley. Carson, who was his usual witty and warm self, shared his spring picks. Being the smart man that he is, Carson told me that accessories are the place to spend one's money because it’s the easiest and cheapest way to continuously update your look. We might be in a depression, but you don’t have to look depressed bagistas. “Add bold colors in a bag or a bangle,” he told me when we bonded over fashion and our upcoming projects - his expanding QVC line PERFECT by Carson Kressley and my upcoming HSN appearances. Upon departing, I was gifted a sweat amount of swag that included: a straw beach tote, blue tie-die scarf (which I plan to use as a sarong and/or a halter top on my honeymoon), a cream cardigan, a summer makeup kit and two sets of Indian-inspired bangles.

At 8:30 I was in my car with my fiance heading home, having opted out of another event that started at 8pm. This Brooklyn gal turns into a pumpkin at 9pm.

Tonight I'm going out again. Ya twice in one week ... just as soon as I post this, finish a story for BagTrend, follow up on next week's HSN show, send some thank you notes, oh and get on a bus for 90minutes :).

What about using it to easily switch out those essentials from your work bag to your weekend bag? It will fit your blackberry, wallet, lip gross, compact and keys. This $19.90 option is all about versatility ladies. You will love it as much as I do. Yes, I do own it in black! Keep you're eyes glued to the screen as I try to destroy this bag to prove our durable it is.

Now, my number two must-buy, and it will be my bag-a-licious pick from the show tomorrow is the Elite Croco Embossed Tote. HELLO!! it looks amazing. Yes, it's not real leather, but bagistas for $49 it beyond affordable luxury. Plus, the colors. Which one to buy? I'm torn between the yellow (a perfect no sunshine, neutral yellow) and the black. Then again, that orange is also so killer. I don't own this bag yet, but I'm hoping I can buy one tomorrow after I get off air. OK. So, watch because I love when all you bagistas tune in. Last Friday, I hosted an exciting International Women's Day Soiree for MCM Handbags at their uber-sleek Plaza Boutiques store (in the renounced Plaza Hotel location, across the street from Central Park.) Fancy me! I was thrilled to speak on behalf of such a prestigious brand, one that I remember quite vividly from childhood. That's actually one of the reasons they invited me to host the event, which was primarily catered to the Russian shopper who would have also remembered this iconic brand from the late 80s and early 90s. Being that I'm a product of this community and I'm a handbag expert it was a perfect union. For 6 hours I chatted up MCM's history, their fabulous spring 09 line (the watermelon bags had me watering at the mouth for sure!) which includes the permanent return of the Vintage Cognac Visetos Collection, and overall trends for spring and beyond. Below are some shots from the event, including some very happy shoppers who enjoyed the evening's 20% off special. The evening capped off when a Russian news crew from RTVi came to film the event and do an interview with me - in Russian! Grand was so proud :).

Why go green, you ask?

Well, I recently read Gorgeously Green and it all just clicked. I've always recycled my basics, sometimes even going beyond and ripping apart old designer lookbooks to remove the non-recyclable parts. I don't waste water and turn off lights/electronics when not in use. But, that was it. What about my makeup and the chemicals I was putting on my face and then when I washed it off where did those chemicals go and what did they do? And, what about reusable materials for home and fashion design? I loved that Gorgeously Green didn't overwhelm or preach; it slowly educated and offered up options - many of which I still plan to research further!!

And that brings me back to the BagTrends GREEN Arm Candy Party. Consumption is a way of life and the only way to really push change is to show consumers that green can be gorgeous, and well, bag-a-licious. If we start to spend our green dollars on green merchandise it will a) show our political leaders what we value b) create competition in the green market and c) lower the costs of many eco products. So, the past few months I've been on the hunt for amazing green/eco handbag lines, jewelry and in the bag essentials. It's been an exciting challenge and the journey of educating myself has been an added reward. No fashion week would be complete without a full disclosure of my handbag selection. Despite being in the AKA Hotel for The Daily Hospitality Suite for nearly three full days, I still managed to have plenty of handbag changes. For long stretches away from the office, I went with Rebecca Minkoff's MAB mini in persimmon - it's a wow color you can't miss. Alternatively, I also used the m. Clifford Designs Terrell Tote in black when my coat had enough going on without the need for a pop of color from my bag. For a fun evening affairs, or when I wanted to get extra attention, it was Bodhi's Safety Pin clutch - everyone always asks about it and I love the retro 50s vibe. For a quick coffee run it was my Vegan Queen wallet/clutch - great for holding lipstick and blackberry. And when all of my bag's weren't enough I turned to BagBorrowOrSteal.
Every fashion week, I borrow a few new bags as a test run. I use this company to see if I bag I'm really lusting after will work in my lifestyle. Can you imagine spending $2000 on a bag and then loathing it? Not in today's economy - not ever. So, this season I borrowed:

Chanel Quilted Flap Bag: love the bag, loved the space and outside pocket for metro card, hated how sensitive the leather was because it's just not practical for my hectic bridge-and-tunnel life
VERDICT: would buy post recession in a different finish
Chanel Classic 2.55 Quilted Camel Bag: perfect bag, lives up to the legacy, ideal depth for everything a modern gal needs, can function as work bag if you don't need folders/books/lots of extras, loved all the pockets, loved the patent finish, loved wearing strap long (key look for spring) and short (always "classic"); a perfect rental gift for a month of elegance at $250
VERDICT: recession, smashesion I want this bag now!
Valentino Petal Rose Dome Handbag: a beauty to look at, made me smile when I wore it, leather a bit too sensitive for me, never used the shoulder strap that ruins this dainty style, great day bag if you know there's a cocktail party at night
VERDICT: aesthetically pleasing, wouldn't mind owning it (hint hint Steve), but can live without it - for now
And for the first time, I borrowed jewelry too.
Miriam Haskell Large Beaded Flower Necklace: wawo-wawa!! talk about an attention grabbing piece, couldn't walk across a room without getting asked "where did you get that?", impeccable craftsmanship both on the front and back of the piece!, statement necklace is a must for spring
VERDICT: would love to buy, but I'm sure I'd get board so renting for a week at $42 is ideal to wear the trend while it's hot
Hello Kitty Pink Ceramic Diamond Watch: only a true hello kitty fan can rock this, I couldn't find the right time - no pun intended - to wear this, will try this weekend before I send everything back
VERDICT: you have to be out of your mind or a hello kitty fanatic to buy this for $3K - and this is coming from a big hello kitty fan, sorry I'm going to pass on this one

As always, I have neglected to post for quite some time. But, my bag-a-licious life has been quite bag-a-licious and I've found that twitter is short and sweat so check me out www.twitter.com/pamelapekerman for regular updates!! I also just signed up for Tumblr, but I’m only in the beginning/orientation stage. And as always, I'm doing stories for http://www.bagtrends.com/. And, I'm going to work harder to let you know when a TV segment or bag story that I write is coming out.

So, fashion week - madness!! I only went to one show (Michael Kors) this season because BagTrends was an official presenter at IMG's The Daily Fashion Week Suite. The media/vip hospitality suite was beyond amazing. We (me, Paula - my phenomenal assistant -, and Michelle - the creative director of BagTrends and my awesome sister-) met many great fashion editors, mingled with the celebs, chatted up BagTrends and more. I was so excited to give away a m. Clifford Renee clutch in black croco embossed. This clutch is a perfect shape, fits everything, has the luxury red suede lining, is made in the good-old USA, has the zipper dealing that's a key trend for spring, there are plenty of pockets and it also has a detachable shoulder strap. Ya, I'm obsessed with this bag and with m. Clifford ... and I'm not the only one. All the editors were flipping for this new line, as well as my personal Bodhi safety-pin bag - Bodhi is another one of my Names 2 Watch in 2009. The whole event was held at the AKA Hotel in Times Square. LOVE LOVE this boutique hotel. The staff is very friendly, the location is ideal if you're coming to NYC as a tourist - it's two block from Bryant Park and walking - yes I do it all the time - distance to Central Park. Come on people 15 short blocks down the fabulous 5th Avenue never killed anyone. It's a 20min walk, max. Anyway, so I recommend that. Also, I recommend Amarone Restaurant - they were one of the caterers at the Daily Suite. Yummy yum!! Well, that was how we spent most of fashion week - in a sweat hotel, with plenty of free food, nice people, talking about great bags and promoting our upcoming BagTrends GREEN Arm Candy Party. The pictures speak for themselves. It was a great week.
