UC bags National Best Business Idea Award 2012

University of Cebu’s winning streak continues as they were named National Champion of the Food Category and 1st runner up of the Non-Food Category in the 2012 Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry (PCCI) 6th Best Business Idea and Development (BIDA) Award.

The presentation and defense of their proposal was held last October 3, 2012 at the PCCI Boardroom, Mckinley Hill, Bonifacio Global City and awarding was held this October 10, 2012, Manila Hotel during the 38th Philippine Business Conference.

The UC Team, which hails from the University of Cebu – Banilad Campus, comprised of students Jezreel Ezer Archival BSBA 4, Sheryl Benitez BSA 4, Marrise Tumampos BSAcT 3, Wilheim De Leon BSA 3 with Coach Mr. Christopher Biore, CPA.

UC was the only team that sent two proposed projects with both making it to the top ten in their respective categories. The projects were “Fully Loaded Hanging Rice” for the food category that integrated culture, tradition and tourism and “Mango Seed Kernel Oil” for the non-food category.

UC Team Coach Mr. Christopher Biore said, “Our students really worked very hard on the projects, experiencing three failures in prototyping attempts. We let them work undisturbed in one room and they stayed in one cubicle for long uninterrupted hours for two days. These projects are really character building activities for the team and confidence boosting experiences to the hundreds of business students left behind at the campus.”

Biore added that the UC administration was very supportive, shouldering everything before and during the trip to Manila. This is their second time as national champion in the food category, after they won it first in 2008 and their first time to participate and win in the non-food category. There were a total of 34 universities and colleges all over the Philippines who made it to the final judging with the University of Cebu – Banilad being the lone representative of the Visayas Region in both Food and Non-Food Categories.

UC METC gets nod from Panama Maritime Authority

The University of Cebu Maritime Education Training Center (UC-METC) got the nod from officials of the Panama Maritime Authority (PMA). Panama certification requires various steps including the recognition audit of the Maritime Training Center, which is done every two years.

UC-METC currently has 30 maritime upgrading courses accredited by PMA. Four new courses were also recognized – Maritime Pollution III-V, Maritime Pollution I-VI (consolidated), Medical Care and Electronic Chart Display and Information System.

Maritime Training Department Deputy Engr. Cecilia Hernandez, Maritime Training Department Head Ms. Joanna Rodriguez, Maritime Training Department Assistant to the Head Ms. Yennifer Peña and Universidad Maritama Internacional de Panama and Universidad Tecnologica de Panama Professor and former PMA Ports Compliance Officer Engr. Roberto Pineda were in UC-METC to conduct the quality audit.

An evaluation of the training programs by the Consulate of the Republic of Panama in Manila were also part of the renewal procedure as well as the documentation requirements that scrutinize the credentials and course materials of the instructors to make sure it abides by their established standards.

Only seafarers who obtained trainings from Panama-recognized maritime training centers can go on board Panamanian vessels. Panamanian ship owners and manning agencies handling Panamanian vessels refer to a list of PMA-recognized training centers provided by the Consulate of the Republic of Panama before accepting new crew members and ship officers.

As of 2003, one-third of the registered Panamanian ships were manned by Filipino seafarers. In 2010, the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration recorded 339,608 officers and non-marine Filipino seafarers who worked aboard foreign vessels. Within that year, Panama registered ships ranked highest in terms of employing Filipinos on board with 66,523 registered seafarers.

The UC administration headed by President Atty. Augusto W. Go and Chancellor Ms. Candice G. Gotianuy understand the need of Filipino seafarers to be globally competitive. Thus, UC-METC continues its practice of offering established quality education and training.

UCLM emerges as Champion in ICFC Regional Finals and ranks third nationwide

The University of Cebu’s string of Champions just keeps going as the University of Cebu LapuLapu Mandaue won first place for the Central and Eastern Visayas regions in the 14th Inter-Collegiate Finance Competition (ICFC) and ranked third nationwide next to Ateneo de Manila University that ranked first and the University of the Philippines Diliman that ranked second.

A total of 86 colleges and universities participated in the eliminations held simultaneously last September 21. The Central and Eastern Visayas schools converged at the University of the Visayas in Cebu City. Other eliminations were held at the J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. Building in Taguig City for the National Capital Region and Southern Luzon schools; University of the Cordilleras in Baguio City for the Northern Luzon schools; Angeles University Foundation in Pampanga for the Central Luzon schools; University of St. La Salle in Bacolod City for the Western Visayas schools; and Xavier University – Ateneo de Cagayan in Cagayan de Oro City for the Mindanao schools.

UCLM Commerce Dean Ms. Jessica A. Selisana said, “Our students proudly held their ground. They will join other finalists nationwide along with some students representing schools from other Asian countries for the finals.” The finals will be held at the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas in Manila on October 22. Schools from Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore, Guam, and Thailand are expected to participate.

The ICFC is a project of the Junior Financial Executives Institute of the Philippines (FINEX) in collaboration with J.P. Morgan Chase & Co. as principal sponsor and AIM through the Gov. Jose B. Fernandez Jr. Center for Banking and Finance.

UC President is Garbo sa Sugbu awardee

University of Cebu President and Honorary Consul of South Korea to Cebu Atty. Augusto W. Go is this year’s recipient for the Garbo sa Sugbo Award for Education; a fitting recognition to the man behind an institution that has provided quality yet affordable education for over 44 years.

The University of Cebu welcomes residents of Cebu and the regions of Visayas and Mindanao and is the biggest educational institution in the Philippines congregated in only one area.

The Garbo sa Sugbo Awards 2012 was held during the Governor’s Ball of the 443rd Founding Anniversary of Cebu Province.

UC awards P60K to Nursing board topnotcher / P100K to Milo Olympic Champs

Their efforts certainly paid off as a nursing board topnotcher and Milo Olympics winners of the University of Cebu received awards from University President Atty. Augusto W. Go. Nursing Licensure 10th Placer 2012 Vanessa M. Tocle received P60,000 and the University of Cebu – High School Varsity who won first overall in the secondary division of the Little Milo Olympics received P100,000 on top of the P40,000 they won.

“Thank you for making the University of Cebu proud,” Atty. Augusto W. Go said to the students as he handed them the rewards. The rewards were presented during the inaugural dinner of the University of Cebu Medical Center held at the Marco Polo Hotel Cebu recently.

The University of Cebu Medical Center, a Level 4 General Hospital will be located at the North Reclamation Area, Subangdaku, Mandaue City, with 12 storeys on a property owned by University of Cebu of roughly 1.3 hectares.

The new hospital will soon fulfill the institution’s commitment to provide quality but affordable education and medical services. UC Dance Company wins award in Korea

The University of Champions just keeps going! The University of Cebu Dance Company was awarded as the Best Folkloric Dance Troupe during the Korean World Travel Fair and Expo held at the Center of Exposition in Seoul, South Korea from June 7 to 10, 2012.

The UC Dance Company wowed the crowd of over 100,000 travel industry professionals, buyers and specialists and travel consumers who participated in the travel fair. They performed at the Philippine Booth and at the main stage of the Korean World Travel Fair and Expo dances from the various festivals of Cebu province — like the Palawod Festival Dance, the Karanza Festival of Danao, Bonga of Sibonga, Torta of Argao, Hinulawan of Toledo, Sarok of Consolacion and Sinulog of Cebu.

This is the second time that UC won a similar award. The first award was in Busan for the International Travel Fair held last September 11 to 14, 2009. This time it was a twin win for the Philippines having won the Best Folkloric Performers and the Best Booth awards.

The Korean World Travel Fair and Expo or the 25th Korea World Travel Fair (KOTFA2012) and COEX (Convention & Exhibition Center) has the biggest participation by international and domestic tourism related organizations among the travel exhibitors in Korea.

University of Cebu Medical Center launched in a festive inaugural dinner

Several well-wishers comprised of friends, business colleagues and doctors gathered at the posh Grand Ballroom of Marco Polo Hotel Cebu for the University of Cebu Medical Center Inaugural Dinner. The crowd surprised the hosts who were only but grateful that despite the heavy flooding and traffic congestion that day, guests came to show support.

Which was only fitting, since the night turned out to be a double affair, as UC colleagues surprised their Chancellor Ms. Candice Gotianuy, who was then celebrating her birthday, with a cake.

Exciting dance and song numbers continually entertained the guests including performances from the UC Chorale, UC Dance Company and Fire Attraction Dancers.

The University of Cebu is sourcing an initial investment of PhP 2 Billion to build the University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMC), a Level 4 General Hospital to be located at the North Reclamation Area, Subangdaku, Mandaue City, Cebu.

As the first Level 4 Hospital in Mandaue City, the University of Cebu Medical Center will be 12 stories high across an 8,000 square meter property or land owned by University of Cebu of roughly 1.3 hectares.

Its floor area will be close to 30,000 square meters with a massive entrance lobby, Emergency Room, Radiology Section with X-Ray, MRI and reception, doctors clinics, the Intensive Care Unit, Dialysis Center, operating rooms, admitting area, chapel, conference rooms, wards, private rooms and suite rooms designed by architectural firm Espina, Perez-Espina & Associates led by Archt. Maxwell Espina.

Expected to be fully operational within 18 months, UCMC will serve the general public and the population of all the UC schools and campuses, including the 10,000 plus merchant marine students who will need medical accreditation and attention for foreign ship deployment and the medical and nursing students for their training and employment, plus the rest of the 39,000 students for their medical needs.

Now with the UC Medical Center the commitment towards providing quality but affordable education and medical care will be elevated towards greater heights as UCMC will allocate a percentage of its of its services for less privileged members of Cebu at charitable prices.

UNIVERSITY OF CEBU TO BUILD A NEW HOSPITAL

Cebu, Philippines. The University of Cebu is all geared up to construct its very own University of Cebu Medical Center. The Department of Health has approved a Permit to Construct the University of Cebu Medical Center (UCMC), a Level 4 General Hospital to be located at the North Reclamation Area, Subangdaku, Mandaue City, Cebu.

The approval, which passed through the Health Facilities Establishment Review Committee, was stated in a letter addressed to University of Cebu President Atty. Augusto W. Go dated July 30, 2012 from the office of DoH Secretary Dr. Enrique T. Ona, FPCS, FACS.

A Level 4 Hospital, as defined the National Center for Health Facilities Development, is a teaching and training hospital that provides clinical care and management on the prevalent diseases in the locality, as well as specialized and sub-specialized forms of treatment, surgical procedure and intensive care.

A General Hospital, likewise, is defined as a hospital that provides services for all types of deformity, disease, illness or injury as determined by the Department of Health.

The University of Cebu Medical Center, which will span across an 8,000 square meter property at the Mandaue NRA, will be the first Level 4 Hospital in Mandaue City.

An initial investment of Two Billion Pesos is allocated and sourced by the University of Cebu towards the construction and completion of the UC Medical Center.

Thus the University of Cebu Medical Center will soon fulfill the institution’s commitment to provide quality but affordable education and medical services establishing a medical school and medical hospital for the UC System.

The hospital will link with all the UC schools and campuses, including the 10,000 plus merchant marine students who will need medical accreditation and attention for foreign ship deployment and the medical and nursing students for their training and employment, plus the rest of the 34,000 students for their medical needs.

The families of all UC students and alumni will also be UCMC’s natural market as they will be entitled to special discounts as part of the UC family.

It may be recalled in 2008, the University of Cebu-Banilad and its partners purchased the St. Vincent General Hospital (SVGH). Since then, the hospital has been accredited by PhilHealth as a tertiary hospital with a 100-bed capacity. The original 6-storey building was given an extensive renovation and in 2010, an adjacent 7-storey building was completed and opened to accommodate a growing number of patients. Like UC, St. Vincent General Hospital is structured to provide quality but affordable medical services to the community.

University of Cebu Chancellor Candice Gotianuy said, “We are always searching for ways to improve our services. With UCMC, medical education and medical care will be enhanced to serve people.”

Norwegian Training Center Directors change guard at UCLM

Turn over ceremonies of incoming and outgoing managing directors of Norwegian Training Center-Manila (NTCM) was held yesterday July 17, 2012 at the University of Cebu Lapulapu & Mandaue (UCLM) quadrangle. Capt. Stein Eriksen, Outgoing Managing Director of the Norwegian Training Center turned over his office to Capt. Erik Blom, Incoming Managing Director.

The Norwegian Shipowners’ Association serves more than 160 companies in the field of Norwegian shipping and offshore contractor activities. Its members employ more than 55,000 seafarers and offshore workers from more than 50 different nations. The NSA Philippines Cadet Program of the Association of Shipowners’ Training and Education Project (ASO-ATEP) aims to improve the maritime education in the Philippines.
Of the total population of seafarers worldwide, thirty-five to forty percent (35% – 40%) are Filipinos. These maritime workers contribute roughly thirty-nine (39%) percent to the economy. UCLM has its 20th batch of cadets this year, with an average of 300 cadets per batch.

UC President Atty. Augusto Go said, “If this trend continues, Philippine seafarers will comprise fifty percent (50%) of the total worldwide population of seafarers.”

UC is the only school in the Philippines with numerous foreign scholarships. Aside from the NSA, other foreign scholarships include the Marlowe Study Now Pay Later Plan, Brize, IMEC, Blue Eastern, MIC. Atty. Go stressed, “Even the financially challenged can become millionaires.”

Confirming an interview invitation from a company you applied to is very important and should not be taken for granted. The whole interview process will assess if you are able to do the job, if the job available is something that you are willing to do, and if you are the right fit for it.

Personal interviews are even better than phone interviews because you will be able to interact better with the interviewers. When you attend an interview, you need to be prepared and have the right mental attitude.

Confidence

Nervousness or being jittery are common feelings experienced by a candidate during interview. Avoid feeling inadequate for the position you are applying to. Successful students exhibit a combination of successful attitudes and behaviors as well as intellectual capacity. Successful students . . .

1. . . . are responsible and active.

Successful students get involved in their studies, accept responsibility for their own education, and are active participants in it! Responsibility is the difference between leading and being led. Active classroom participation improves grades without increasing study time. You can sit there, act bored, daydream, or sleep. Or you can actively listen, think, question, and take notes like someone in charge of their learning experience. Either option costs one class period. However, the former method will require a large degree of additional work outside of class to achieve the same degree of learning the latter provides at one sitting.

2. . . . have educational goals.

Successful students are motivated by what their goals represent in terms of career aspirations and life's desires. Ask yourself these questions: What am I doing here? Is there some better place I could be? What does my presence here mean to me?Answers to these questions represent your "Hot Buttons" and are, without a doubt, the most important factors in your success as a college student. If your educational goals are truly yours, not someone else's, they will motivate a vital and positive academic attitude. If you are familiar with what these hot buttons represent and refer to them often, especially when you tire of being a student, nothing can stop you; if you aren't and don't, everything can, and will!

3. . . . ask questions.

Successful students ask questions to provide the quickest route between ignorance and knowledge.In addition to securing knowledge you seek, asking questions has at least two other extremely important benefits. The process helps you pay attention to your professor and helps your professor pay attention to you! Think about it. If you want something, go after it. Get the answer now, or fail a question later. Most instructors want exactly what you want: they would like for you to learn the material in their respective classes and earn a good grade.Successful students reflect well on the efforts of any teacher; if you have learned your material, the instructor takes some justifiable pride in teaching. Join forces with your instructor, they are not an enemy, you share the same interests, the same goals - in short, you're teammates. Get to know your professor. You're the most valuable players on the same team. Your jobs are to work together for mutual success. Neither wishes to chalk up a losing season. Be a team player!

5. . . . don't sit in the back.

Successful students minimize classroom distractions that interfere with learning.Students want the best seat available for their entertainment dollars, but willingly seek the worst seat for their educational dollars. Students who sit in the back cannot possibly be their professor's teammate (see no. 4). Why do they expose themselves to the temptations of inactive classroom experiences and distractions of all the people between them and their instructor? Of course, we know they chose the back of the classroom because they seek invisibility or anonymity, both of which are antithetical to efficient and effective learning. If you are trying not to be part of the class, why, then, are you wasting your time? Push your hot buttons, is their something else you should be doing with your time?

6. . . . take good notes.

Successful students take notes that are understandable and organized, and review them often.Why put something into your notes you don't understand? Ask the questions now that are necessary to make your notes meaningful at some later time. A short review of your notes while the material is still fresh on your mind helps your learn more. The more you learn then, the less you'll have to learn later and the less time it will take because you won't have to include some deciphering time, also. The whole purpose of taking notes is to use them, and use them often. The more you use them, the more they improve.

7. . . . understand that actions affect learning.

Successful students know their personal behavior affect their feelings and emotions which in turn can affect learning.If you act in a certain way that normally produces particular feelings, you will begin to experience those feelings. Act like you're bored, and you'll become bored. Act like you're uninterested, and you'll become uninterested. So the next time you have trouble concentrating in the classroom, "act" like an interested person: lean forward, place your feet flat on the floor, maintain eye contact with the professor, nod occasionally, take notes, and ask questions. Not only will you benefit directly from your actions, your classmates and professor may also get more excited and enthusiastic.

8. . . . talk about what they're learning.

Successful students get to know something well enough that they can put it into words.Talking about something, with friends or classmates, is not only good for checking whether or not you know something, its a proven learning tool. Transferring ideas into words provides the most direct path for moving knowledge from short-term to long-term memory. You really don't "know" material until you can put it into words. So, next time you study, don't do it silently. Talk about notes, problems, readings, etc. with friends, recite to a chair, organize an oral study group, pretend you're teaching your peers. "Talk-learning" produces a whole host of memory traces that result in more learning.

9. . . . don't cram for exams.

Successful students know that divided periods of study are more effective than cram sessions, and they practice it.If there is one thing that study skills specialists agree on, it is that distributed study is better than massed, late-night, last-ditch efforts known as cramming. You'll learn more, remember more, and earn a higher grade by studying in four, one hour-a-night sessions for Friday's exam than studying for four hours straight on Thursday night. Short, concentrated preparatory efforts are more efficient and rewarding than wasteful, inattentive, last moment marathons. Yet, so many students fail to learn this lesson and end up repeating it over and over again until it becomes a wasteful habit. Not too clever, huh?

10. . . . are good time managers.

Successful students do not procrastinate. They have learned that time control is life control and have consciously chosen to be in control of their life.An elemental truth: you will either control time or be controlled by it! It's your choice: you can lead or be led, establish control or relinquish control, steer your own course or follow others. Failure to take control of their own time is probably the no. 1 study skills problem for college students. It ultimately causes many students to become non-students! Procrastinators are good excuse-makers. Don't make academics harder on yourself than it has to be. Stop procrastinating. And don't wait until tomorrow to do it!

Successful students can be distinguished from the average student by their attitudes and behaviors. Below are some profiles that typically distinguish between an "A" student and a "C" student. Where do you fit in this scheme?

The "A" Student - An Outstanding Student

ATTENDANCE: "A" students have virtually perfect attendance. Their commitment to the class is a high priority and exceeds other temptations.

PREPARATION: "A" students are prepared for class. They always read the assignment. Their attention to detail is such that they occasionally can elaborate on class examples.

CURIOSITY: "A" students demonstrate interest in the class and the subject. They look up or dig out what they don't understand. They often ask interesting questions or make thoughtful comments.

RETENTION: "A" students have retentive minds and practice making retentive connections. They are able to connect past learning with the present. They bring a background of knowledge with them to their classes. They focus on learning concepts rather than memorizing details.

ATTITUDE: "A" students have a winning attitude. They have both the determination and the self-discipline necessary for success. They show initiative. They do things they have not been told to do.

TALENT: "A" students demonstrate a special talent. It may be exceptional intelligence and insight. It may be unusual creativity, organizational skills, commitment - or a some combination. These gifts are evident to the teacher and usually to the other students as well.

EFFORT: "A" students match their effort to the demands of an assignment.

COMMUNICATIONS: "A" students place a high priority on writing and speaking in a manner that conveys clarity and thoughtful organization. Attention is paid to conciseness and completeness.

RESULTS: "A" students make high grades on tests - usually the highest in the class. Their work is a pleasure to grade.

The "C" Student - An Average Student

ATTENDANCE: "C" students are often late and miss class frequently. They put other priorities ahead of academic work. In some cases, their health or constant fatigue renders them physically unable to keep up with the demands of high-level performance.

PREPARATION: "C" students may prepare their assignments consistently, but often in a perfunctory manner. Their work may be sloppy or careless. At times, it is incomplete or late.

CURIOSITY: "C" students seldom explore topics deeper than their face value. They lack vision and bypass interconnectedness of concepts. Immediate relevancy is often their singular test for involvement.

RETENTION: "C" students retain less information and for shorter periods. Less effort seems to go toward organizing and associating learned information with previously acquired knowledge. They display short-term retention by relying on cramming sessions that focus on details, not concepts.

ATTITUDE: "C" students are not visibly committed to class. They participate without enthusiasm. Their body language often expresses boredom.

TALENT: "C" students vary enormously in talent. Some have exceptional ability but show undeniable signs of poor self-management or bad attitudes. Others are diligent but simply average in academic ability.

EFFORT: "C" students are capable of sufficient effort, but either fail to realistically evaluate the effort needed to accomplish a task successfully, or lack the desire to meet the challenge.

COMMUNICATIONS: "C" students communicate in ways that often limit comprehension or risk misinterpretation. Ideas are not well formulated before they are expressed. Poor listening/reading habits inhibit matching inquiry and response.

RESULTS: "C" students obtain mediocre or inconsistent results on tests. They have some concept of what is going on but clearly have not mastered the material.

University of Cebu (UC) is an educational institution located at Cebu City, Philippines. It was founded in 1964. As an institution of higher learning, the university is committed to an authentic education founded on the principles of humanity, nationalism and academic excellence.

It houses four campuses: the Main Campus along Sanciangko Street; the Banilad Campus along Gov. Cuenco Ave., Brgy. Banilad; the UC-LM Campus (stands for Lapu-Lapu / Mandaue); and the UC-METC (Maritime Educational Training Center) along Alumnos St., Mambaling. It also has one defunct campus — the former UC-South Campus along Sanciangko Street which has been demolished and is replaced by an expansion of UC's sister company Elizabeth Mall (E-Mall).
