Let Sleeping Blue Dogs

The old quote is to "let sleeping dogs lie," which means that some folks are best left uninformed of what is going on about them. I'm wondering if this adage applies to the Blue Dogs in Congress. Surely this should not be the case for those we elect to be ever-vigilant of our liberties and best interests, yet that seems to be the approach Democrat leadership in Washington is taking. Not only have they broken their promises (surprise, surprise) to post bills publicly even a scant 72 hours before any vote, they have actively surpressed information about it, keeping the Blue Dogs asleep and letting them lie about what is in the bill. They hope to keep Congress and the American people asleep, too, while they foist this mountain of toxic waste upon us.

So the questions become: 1) Is it better for the Blue Dogs, and any Democrat with a lick of common sense-- however dismaying the estimation of that small number may be-- to remain willfully ignorant and promote the lie than to actively invite the fierce retribution of SOTH (or maybe Sith) Pelosi AND, most likely, your constituents, OR 2) Is it better to hold your vote until you can explain the nasty reality of the bill to your constituents and thus defend your NO vote, and your seat? Whatever Democrats decide, and we'll know shortly, it is in the interest of the nation at large to put this off as long as possible, until everyone, including Congress, the Democrat leadership and Obama himself, recognize that this thing should be shot, strangled, have a stake driven through its heart and buried double deep, face down.

Remember when the History Channel focused on History?

I know, it's been a blurry ride, but there was time before the UFO obsession. Before Nostradamus, before the Mayan predictions, before ghost hunters, loggers, truckers, fishermen, and ganglords. But they still are among my favorite channels where I hold out hope to find something worth giving up a few hours of my life for.

Occasionally they still do a great job amidst the sea of paranormal and sensational speculation shows. This one looks like a real winner. So set your DVRs —2 hours.

It sprung up overnight in August, 1961--a makeshift blockade separating repressive, Soviet-controlled East Berlin from the Allied-run democracy to the west. Soon the barrier encircled all of West Berlin, sealing its two million citizens off from the rest of the world. As escape attempts escalated, deadlier obstacles were added. Eventually, a 97-mile barrier, virtually impenetrable, snaked along the border between East and West Berlin. And 28 years later, it came down as unexpectedly as it went up. Observe the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall (November 9, 2009) with a dramatic look at how a line of railway cars and barbed wire evolved into the massively fortified fortress that came to symbolize the Cold War. Computer-generated imagery, re-enactments, archival footage, and expert commentary provide political and historical context while helping to illustrate how construction progressed over time--and how it was suddenly demolished by civilians in 1989.

Tuesday's results were the first sign that voters are revolting against runaway spending and government expansion. But Democrat likely ain't seen nothin' yet if they try to ram through health-care reform. There is nothing in the House bill that would do anything to reverse the voter trend we saw this week.

Goldwater 2.0 is Underway

Yesterday at Powerline Paul Meringoff's friend Bill Otis wrote a summary of the 2009 Elections titled: The top five lessons from yesterday. I agree with his points, but number 5 was the most important one for me, and I think he captured it well.

5. Goldwater 2.0 is underway. That is, the Republican Party, which, in domestic policy, had been all but emasculated by Bush's playing kissy-face with welfare state and corporate liberalism (No Child Left Behind, prescription drug benefit, cheap and easy money, bank bailouts, and more), is into the process of discovering that conservatism is its heart and its salvation.

I would add another. Bush's inability to veto a single spending bill. And it's not just President Bush that needs to get saddled with the blame for progressive politics and spending within the GOP in the last many years—all too many Republican members of the House and Senate are complicit too.

The funny thing here is that the party, by that I mean the members of the state level, and local level BPOUs—the ones that actually draft the party platform that filters up from resolutions, have always had it right. The problem has not been the grassroots members of the party. Those that bother to show up, roll up their sleeves and work hard to keep things happening are almost entirely made up of strongly conservative people. In my experience, the liberal Republicans and moderates, will vote, but rarely care enough about anything to show up and work.

But the elected officials too often drift—don't uphold the principles of conservatism, adherence to the Constitution and the platform. If they did, the points that Bill Otis mentions would never have been voted on. So has been the drift towards progressivism since the turn of the century save for that brief period of Reagan re-examination. When our leaders do drift, we've got to wake them up, or let them go unsupported. Let's hope Goldwater 2.0 will be enough to pull the country back to common sense.

"Barrack Hussein Obama, Mmm, Mmm, Mmm." Catchy tune that. And how glad I am that my kids will not be getting a dose of it at their non-government school. But I'm assured by my fellow parents who do have kids at government schools that those couple of videos that popped up on YouTube last month were just rare examples of overly enthusiastic school teachers looking to make up an innocent song for the kids. Really? If your kids are at government schools, chances are their teachers about 5-1 are Obama supporters.

John Nolte at Big Hollywood has found 11 more videos examples of Obamaganda from government schools. Here's one complete with choreography.

Interesting discussions at MPR today - worth a read and a listen:

Given the vacuous nature of most news these days, it's not a service to the listener to prove one's "mainstreamness" by trying to be just like everyone else. Besides, the issue isn't really about one's views. Conservative views, of course, should be heard. And if it's a conservative voice that NPR really wants -- and this goes for liberals, too -- why not make the ability to have an intelligent political dialog instead of a food fight, a qualification for a seat in the studio? To do otherwise creates the impression that all conservatives are loudmouthed fools, and that's simply not true. Example? Rep. John Kline's appearance on MPR's Midday last Friday to talk about Afghanistan -- and his give-and-take with callers who agreed and disagreed with him -- was everything Public Radio should be.

Check out MPR's radio programs today. Topics include the GOP split, Minnesota's 43,000 manufacturing sector job loss, and R.T. Rybak's sites on the Governor's seat. Add your voices to the discussion.
