When you open the dishwasher to unload it, do the cups have water puddled on them? And even when you do your best to carefully dump the water out in the dishwasher or sink, the puddle still flings on the other dishes, the floor, or even on you? And even when you’re able to get most of the water off the cup, there are always droplets that leave a ring on the bottom of your cup cabinet?

You are not alone!

Even with the “dry” setting on most dishwashers, there seems to always be water left on top (well, technically the bottom) of cups, glasses, and even plastic containers. Surely one of these days someone will invent a dishwasher that drys all the water. Until then, here’s a little tip to use when unloading your dishwasher.

How to Quickly Remove Puddled Water from Cups and Glasses

Seeing water rings in a kitchen cabinet immediately makes the cabinet look dirty, even when it’s not. So here’s a quick way to remove excess water from cups and prevent water rings on your kitchen cabinets.

Before unloading the dishwasher, pull out a drying mat or dishcloth and place it on the counter between your dishwasher and cup cabinet. As you pull each cup or glass out of the dishwasher, flip it over and run it across the drying mat to remove the excess water, then place in the cabinet.

Simple, right?

You may have thought about doing this before but never took the time to implement. Try it today! It takes about 1 extra second per glass when unloading the dishwasher but it’s well worth the time to eliminate the frustration that comes with wet glasses. Plus, it helps you keep your cabinets in tip-top condition!

For the past two weeks I’ve been weaning myself off sugar because I. am. addicted. For a sugar addict like me, it is so hard to give it up cold turkey!

Can anyone relate?

In order to trick myself into thinking I’m getting some sort of treat, I’ve been blending smoothies (or “milkshakes” as my son calls them) to drink. I just throw a few frozen berries, coconut milk, spinach if I have it, and sometimes a little protein powder into the blender. Every once in a while I even skimp a bit on the liquid so it’s the consistency of sorbet! Delish I tell you!

There’s only one problem. If those deep, dark berry bits are left in the blender for more than two minutes they suddenly become impossible to clean. So as much as I want to ignore the mess and savor that yummy treat, I’ve been using this shortcut for cleaning the blender:

Blender Cleaning Shortcut

After using the blender, fill it half-way with water, squirt a small amount of soap in it and run the blender for a few seconds.

Empty.

Rinse.

Dry.

Done.

Easy. Peasy. A few seconds now saves a lot of headache later!

I have a friend who I classify as the ultimate homemaker. When she goes out of town her family functions as if she’s still there due to her preparation. She pre-cooks breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks for her family that are dated, labeled, and categorized. Anyone who opens the refrigerator is able tell what’s on the menu and can follow the food preparation instructions. Clothes for her children are picked out, pressed, and hung in the order they are to be worn. Agendas for the family are even typed out.

She is a true wonder mom.

When I go out of town I always think of her, try to live up to her ways, and always fall extreemly short! And you know what…I am totally okay with that!

This weekend I went out of town and there were no meals labeled in the fridge and certainly no clothes picked out and ironed for the kids. However, there was one major accomplishment: a family meal prior to me leaving.

Schedules in our household have been a bit crazier than usual and my family desperately needed a reason to connect. So when Publix and the National Pork Board asked me to participate in a 4 week “Good and Good For You Challenge,” I jumped at the opportunity!
This recipe for Sautéed Pork Tenderloin Medallions with Lemon-Garlic Sauce looked delish and I even had all the ingredients except the pork in the fridge. So I picked up a pork tenderloin from Publix since it’s on sale this week and got to work!

Our meal times usually consist of either my husband or I scarfing down our food while the other wrangles the kids. Then we switch. Teamwork at it’s best! One day we’ll be in a different season but for now it’s our reality…

For some reason though, this meal was different. The toddler sat still and ate (a miracle in itself!), the baby hung out quietly, and we were able to hold and entire conversation without much interruption.

On top of that, they all enjoyed it! Now there are usually a few polite “thank you for making dinner” comments in our house because we’re trying to teach the boys good manners, but there’s not what I would consider an abundance of accolades. For this meal, though, there were praises all around! The boys couldn’t get enough. And they mentioned more than once how great the meal tasted. Did you catch that? More than once!

I’m not the greatest cook in the world (can you say understatement?) but apparently I can follow instructions like nobody’s business!

This dinner was just what we needed to reconnect before I left for the weekend and in my opinion, way more important than prepping meals, ironing the kiddos clothes, and trying to be wonder mom :)

*GIVEAWAY*

Is your family in need of some quality time around the dinner table? Well, today is your lucky day! You have the opportunity to win $40 of fresh pork, a meat thermometer, a reusable bag, a pedometer, and a reusable water bottle.

To enter, leave a comment on this post letting me know how meal time is handled in your house. Is it peaceful? Crazy with kids running around? Perfect because your kids love veggies? Nonexistent because your always running to your next appointment?

Taxes. You either love ‘em or hate ‘em.

Actually I’m not sure I have ever met anyone who loves taxes…but surely there’s someone out there!

Nevertheless, taxes must be filed and paid so the best way to make it as painless as possible is to keep tax documents organized.

3 Ways to Organize Tax Documents

Organizing tax documents can be a big hurdle when trying to keep paperwork under control. I know quite a few people who just throw documents (often unopened) into their paper pile only to spend hours going through it when it’s time to file taxes. Much of that time can be recouped by spending a few minutes early each year doing some prep work.

1. 12 Tab Expanding File

If you decided earlier in this series that your documents were simple enough to use a 12 tab expanding file, you know that there are 12 tabs with 13 pockets. The first 12 tabs should be labeled by month and the pockets used to file your monthly bills, statements and receipts. Label the final pocket “taxes” and file year end statements, W-2′s, charitable donation receipts, and other tax documents as they come in.

Easy right?

There are a couple downfalls to this system that need to be kept in mind.

You need more than one 12 tab expanding file. Since there’s overlap from the time a new year starts to the time you actually prepare and file taxes, you need at least one other expanding file (one for the current year and one for the previous year).

You have to create a new file to store the tax documents once the previous years taxes are submitted. Unless you scan every document related to your taxes once they’re submitted, you’ll have to find a place to store everything for the next few years (or forever). If you want to stay ultra-organized, that means creating a new file or hanging file. If you are going to create a new folder anyway, you might as well use one of the next two methods to save a step…

2. One Master “Taxes” Folder for Each New Tax Year

The absolute easiest way to organize tax documents is to have one folder for each year (and if you’re following along with this series, make that a hanging folder). As you look in your file drawer, you should see several tax folders: Taxes-2012, Taxes-2011, Taxes-2010, etc.

As documents come in for last year, immediately file them in your “Taxes – 2011″ folder. You should definitely open each document as they are mailed to you because you just may find a discrepancy that needs to be resolved or realize there’s some action required on your part before submitting. But, even if you don’t open the mail, at least file the documents in the correct folder instead of throwing them in your paper pile. That way all your documents are in one place when you actually are ready to begin the tax prep process.

You may even begin receiving documents or tracking information for the current tax year before you submit taxes for last year, so create your “Taxes-2012″ file now.

If you don’t do anything else other than put any and every tax related document into this one folder, you’ll be able to easily sort your documents for your CPA. And in very little time too!

3. Categorical Tax Folders

Those of you with more complex taxes or for those who have a hard time remembering what exactly should be tracked for tax purposes may benefit from categorical tax folders.

Categorical tax folders can be categorized in whatever way works best for you. If you need help tracking mileage, education expenses, educator expenses, health care expenses, etc., then feel free to make a folder for each of those to jog your memory. If you have business expenses and need help tracking advertising, auto, contract worker, home office, legal, and other expenses, then keep a folder for each of those categories.

Yes, you could keep them all in one folder like mentioned above, but if you have extra space in your file drawers or need reminders, than this system is for you.

To find the best categories for you to track, I’d recommend looking though your previous tax returns to determine what would work best for you. If you use Freedom Filer like I do, then pay attention to the categories they offer…I think they thought of almost everything!

(Remember, we’ll work on going paperless later in the series, but for now we’re dealing with any hard documents you may accumulate throughout the year. Plus, I know many of you are fans of keeping a hard copy of tax documents and wouldn’t even think of keeping them electronically! Oh, and keep in mind that I’m not a tax expert so always consult a professional to determine what documents you should keep/file.)

Action Items for Today

Determine which tax filing system will work best for you.

Depending on the above answer, set up your second 12 tab expanding file, create your “Taxes-2012″ folder, or review previous tax returns to create categorical folders for this tax year.

Cleaning toilets gross. me. out. Even when it’s one the toddler uses.

Maybe I should say, especially when it’s the one the toddler uses!

Even when you empty and rinse the bowl after each use, it can get pretty disgusting. Not to mention they sometimes miss (often miss?). So I’m all about finding shortcuts for cleaning the toddler potty!

The secret? Cleaning it in the dishwasher!

Just throw the toddler potty in the dishwasher run a cycle.

Yes, it’s a bit unorthodox and I know it may not be the “green” thing to do. It might even cost a little extra on the next water bill. But sometimes you just need to cut yourself some slack and do things the lazy way.

Granted you may want to clean the dishwasher afterwards (feel free to throw a bit of bleach in there for good measure) because, I don’t know about you, but something just seems wrong about putting dishes in the next cycle.

Of course, if you have a fancy-smanshy toddler potty that plays music or uses batteries, I should probably mention that you should clean it the old fashioned way. Just spray it down with disinfectant and wipe. It not quite as easy as the lazy way but it will do the job :)

Do you use the dishwasher to clean anything other than dishes?

Women usually gain weight after they get married…at least that’s what I’ve been told…and *ahem* personally experienced.

Is it because we’re finished looking for a man? Get comfortable? Complacent? Become moms?

Or do married women gain weight because they try to keep up with their man at the dinner table?

My experience is the latter.

A very wise woman once told me that once married, women tend to eat the same amount as their husband at dinner because we instinctively fill both plates equally. Although we most likely know we shouldn’t eat the same amount as our husbands, somehow we let it happen and the weight creeps on.

This wise woman gave me some very practical advise: Eat from a smaller salad plate even if your husband eats from a regular dinner plate. That way both plates can be full, neither will feel deprived, and both will eat the appropriate amount for their body size.

Dinner Plates and Contact Lens Cases

Just like filling a plate, we naturally fill other items, like contact lens cases, to the brim without thinking if it’s actually necessary.

In my home, there are two contact lens wearers. That means we have several types of contact cases and go though quite a bit of contact lens solution. What I’ve noticed, is that the person with the larger contact lens case goes through their bottle of solution at almost double the speed of the one using a smaller case.

You see, instead of putting enough solution into the case to cover the contacts each night, both people fill their contact lens case to the top. It’s not intentional. It’s just a habit.

If 1/2 ounce of solution is needed to cover the contact lens but the contact case hold 1 ounce, it’s just natural to fill it up!

Simple Way to Save Money on Contact Lens Solution

If you aren’t the type of person to go into auto mode when taking out contacts, you can train yourself to fill the contact case according to need.

For the rest of us, however, the simplest way I know to save money on contact lens solution is to use less by downsizing our contact lens case. A small contact case means less solution needed…even if you fill it to the brim!

Now that you’ve set up monthly file folders, let’s talk about how to actually use them. It’s quite simple really, but I wanted to give a little detail for those who are new to this concept and for those who are trying to figure out what to do with receipts. (Remember, we’ll work on going paperless later in the series, but for now we’re dealing with any hard documents you may accumulate or need to keep throughout the year.)

When bills arrive in your mailbox:

place in your in-box and pay the bill when you empty (hopefully this is a weekly occurrence, if not daily).

write the date paid on the hard copy.

file in the appropriate monthly slot.

When you get your monthly bank statement(s):

reconcile your account by matching up your receipts to the charges shown on your account.

resolve any discrepancies you may have found.

staple receipts to the monthly statement.

Which receipts should you keep and which receipts should you trash?

Receipts needed for tax purposes. Some people need to keep every single receipt for tax preparation. If you fall into this category, you most likely know…although, you may be in the habit of just throwing them into a shoe box instead of keeping them neatly organized. Other like to keep receipts to know how to calculate the dollar amount that’s tax deductible when an item is donated.

Receipts for small regularly occurring purchases. For the rest of you, keeping 20 grocery receipts and 10 gas station receipts each month probably isn’t necessary. If for some reason you think you might need the information, scan the receipts and get rid of them, or keep them in your monthly folder until that same month the following year (or two years if you use even/odd year monthly folders).

Receipts for big purchases. For large purchases like home improvements, furniture, electronics, etc. you may want to keep the receipts in a separate file folder. Why? The records may be helpful when pricing an item to sell and to convince the potential new owner they’re getting a good deal. The receipts can help calculate how much homeowners or renters insurance you need. They can even be useful when there’s a settlement for a faulty product (example: my Mac computer cord fried, I reported it and had to buy a new one. Apparently this was a common occurrence so there is now a settlement. In order to receive reimbursement, though, the original receipt is needed).

Receipts that are scanned. If you are somewhat paperless already and have a scanner, you may be inclined to scan all (or some) of your receipts and then trash the hard copies. If that’s your method, have at it…just make sure your computer is backed up!

Action Items for Today

Empty your in-box, pay bills and file them.

Reconcile monthly statements.

Determine if you need to keep all, some, or no receipts at all.

Let’s hear from you…

What’s your method for keeping receipts? Are they all in a pile? Do you scan receipts? Do you throw them all away?

Earlier this week I set the timer and started speed cleaning the kitchen (you know, that 5 minute thing). While quickly grabbing everything off the counter and filling the dishwasher, my oldest son was in front of me every step of the way. When I moved right, he was there. When I moved left, again he was there. He was walking under my feet every step of the way. Basically, he was in my way.

Frustration started to set in.

And then it hit me…

It’s okay to slow down!

Time in the kitchen (or folding clothes, or cleaning out the garage, anything really) can be used as time (we often think we don’t have) to focus on our children.

While children are young they love to help. Unfortunately, we all know they often outgrow that helpful attitude. Seizing the opportunity now is a great way to turn everyday activities time spent focusing on them. Something as simple as wiping the kitchen counters can be used as a way to have fun with your child. Cleaning the counters can magically turn into a racetrack when you both grab a dishrag and start wiping!

Older children don’t always enjoy hanging out with adults but they’ll often open up as more time is spent with them. Even if that time is spent leisurely washing and drying the dishes, you can use it to talk about the day, dreams, or even fears. It’s far less intimidating for older kids to give you a peak inside their world if their hands are busy instead of sitting face to face with an adult.

The key is to do the task together, not delegate. Yes, it may take longer to get that to-do list crossed off, but it really is okay to slow down every once in a while.

Cleaning may not be the first item on our “fun list” but when it’s turned into a family affair, cleaning can be used as an opportunity to involve kids in your daily activities…to give them a peak inside your world. The main goal when slowing down is to just spend more t.i.m.e. together. The best part will be that your family will bond together, but your home just may get a bit tidier in the process.

Do you involved your family in daily cleaning activities? Or do you split up the tasks and go your separate ways?

Making one good choice often leads to another good choice. Whether it’s choosing a delicious, juicy apple over a piece of cake or picking up one piece of clothing from the bottom of your closet every time to enter, each choice we make matters. Each positive choice we make pushes us towards our goal, whatever that goal may be.

When it comes to laundry, my goal is to keep the pile to a minimum.

The only way I’ve been able to prevent the mound from making it’s way up to the ceiling is to wash one load every single day. Unless my schedule prevents it, or for some random reason there isn’t anything in the laundry basket, I wash, dry and fold laundry each and every day.

Sometimes it’s a load of towels. Other times it’s the bed linens. Most of the time, though, I just rotate washing dark and white laundry. Every once in a while I get all crazy and and mix the two together! That’s where Shout Color Catcher with Oxi comes in.

The color catcher allows mixed washes and helps prevent color runs.

The oxi booster brightens whites and colors and helps fight stains.

It can even be used in top loading and front loading machines.

If your looking to save a bit of time and keep your laundry pile under control, Shout Color Catcher with Oxi may just be your answer. Get it at a discount by grabbing coupons off their Facebook page (and visit me while you’re there). One lucky reader can even get it FREE! Just leave a comment below telling me how often you do laundry.
