IEEE ICME has been the flagship multimedia conference sponsored by four IEEE societies since 2000. It serves as a forum to promote the exchange of the latest advances in multimedia technologies, systems, and applications from both the research and development perspectives of the circuits and systems, communications, computer, and signal processing communities and attracts more than 1,000 delegates all around the world. Fernando was invited to deliver a tutorial on “Network Coding for Efficient Multimedia Content Delivery”. The work reported in the tutorial was resulted from the University of Surrey’s contributions to the MUSCADE project.

Holografika and Fraunhofer HHI together represented MUSCADE at SIGGRAPH Emerging Technologies, showing the 4-camera rig, real-time depth estimation and MVD4 content generation, and rendering on a multiview and a large-scale light-field display. An MVD2 based real-time capable 3D production workflow was demonstrated at the Fraunhofer booth in Hall 8 B80 covering all important topics from real-time 3D acquisition, over real-time depth-estimation, MVD2 encoding, transmission, decoding, and virtual view rendering. “The MVD2 demonstrator addresses a hot topic in the today’s 3D production chain and plays a key role in the MUSCADE exploitation plan”, says Frederik Zilly, project manager at HHI and work package leader within the MUSCADE consortium. Moreover, the project was presented within a talk given by Frederik Zilly within the EBU session “Prepare Today, Prosper Tomorrow: Future-Proofing for Broadcasters”. A team of MUSCADE researchers from the Fraunhofer Institute for Telecommunications Heinrich Hertz Institute won the award for the technical paper, which best communicates cutting edge research. The authors, Christian Riechert, Frederik Zilly, Peter Kauff, Jens Güther and Ralf Schäfer, described the core work on auto-stereoscopic television: 3D without glasses in their paper. State-of-the-art auto-stereoscopic displays require five, ten or even more channels to create the impression of depth for viewers at different viewing angles. These views have to be created at the receiver from the incoming two channel stereoscopic 3D signal. This award-wining paper describes a flexible solution for achieving required number of views, and how they could be implemented in a relatively low-cost chip for mass production.
