Greetings readers, I sincerely hope your upcoming holiday season is filled with all the blessings it can bring. Among those blessings, the avoidance and survival of the Corona Virus, now plaguing our planet, and even though it’s only been 2 years, I am sure many of us are feeling like it may have been longer. Daily reports from local, state and federal levels, news agencies keeping track of any variants that are developing or already here, not to mention the vaccine debate. My own family has been affected by this and honestly, I am stunned that there is still debate on what to do and how to handle this situation. Seems like leaders are absent in approaches that may work, or at the least, protect the people from not just the illness but the economic impacts. Why did I wait 2 years to write this article? Because if I had written it 2 years ago, I would have to know as much as science knows right now about covid-19 and that is not possible…or is it? Put on your truth glasses, we are going deep into corona territory.

SARS COVID

As in previous articles, we will warm up with a bit of pre-knowledge to help with our critical thinking. The definition of a virus as it pertains to an illness is: an infective agent that typically consists of a nucleic acid molecule in a protein coat, is too small to be seen by light microscopy, and is able to multiply only within the living cells of a host. Within this definition, we have already gained some insight; a virus infects its host, it has a protein coating and can only multiply within the living cells of a host. Notice, I didn’t place “in humans” as part of this warm up, that’s because all species suffer with illnesses, animals, fish, birds, humans, not too many exceptions. When this pandemic first was announced, we heard the term, “Novel Corona Virus”, simply, it means “new”, however, the corona virus itself is not new. In an article presented by the national institute of allergy and infectious diseases online, (link is at the end of the article), we learn that corona viruses are actually a large family of viruses that cause our respiratory system problems, such as the common cold. However, over the past couple of decades, three new ones have emerged that cause more serious illnesses and death. They come from the animal reservoirs.

Hundreds of corona virus strains circulate in pigs, camels, bats and even cats and sometimes they jump from animal to human, known as a “spill over event”. Of the seven (Yes, 7) known corona viruses, 4 cause mild symptoms, 3 more serious disease and death. Now, the current corona virus, known as “SARS CoV-2” is the virus that has gained the globe’s attention. Let’s pause for a moment for another quick knowledge boost; SARS is an acronym for Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome and CoV is for corona virus. The first SARS CoV happened in 2002 and was all but gone by 2004. By the way, there’s another corona virus in the middle east, called MERS-CoV, “Middle East Respiratory Syndrome” and is transmitted by camel and yes, our friends in the middle east are affected by it in sporadic outbreaks in humans, discovered 2012. Okay, back to our COVID-19 focus. Remember, 3 of the 7 can cause serious disease, SARS CoV-2, is that third one. First reported from China as being on our planet in late 2019, hence we see COVID-19 in nearly every health journal as a result.

Now, if you’re sharp you noted that there are literally hundreds in the animal kingdoms, but we have only had to deal with 7 in the human species and of those 7, 3 can seriously cause the human race, harm, to the point of death. Let’s take another pause and reflect on that statement, 3 can cause death, and because of this fact, it is no surprise to this author that the health industry is doing all it can to prevent that type of death, including seeking treatments for the infected, and yes, vaccines for the best defense against it. The first SARS CoV in 2002, spread to 26 countries, killing 774 persons and infecting around 8,000 people, it is believed it was spread through international travel and as soon as it entered the human species, researchers studied and worked to learn as much as they could. Imagine their interests peaking when MERS CoV came knocking in 2012, again, studying to learn and treat the sick. Once they began to understand those two, along comes COVID-19 with a “hold my drink” attitude and the killing power to back it up, global death and illness totals have soared into the millions in 2 years.

How did the health industry and science respond to this new challenge? By using the previous data and introducing a new type of vaccine (mRNA) to help, as well as going back to the already studied and tested treatments going back to 2002, almost 20 years ago, no wonder we feel like we’ve been under this for longer than a couple of years. What we know so far, a virus infects species, sometimes that infection jumps to humans from animals (this is also known as Zoonotics or the study of diseases that jump from animal to human and vice versa), corona viruses have been around a while, 7 on the planet affecting humans, 3 deadly and a minimum of 20 years worth of study on all of them, 1 currently causing a global health crisis.

COVID-19

Imagine you’re sitting in an office cubicle and you work with 50 other employees, one day, employee Jacob comes in sick with the flu, he has a cough, sniffles, smells of cough drops and looks pretty rough from his low grade fever. Plenty of people offer their well wishes as they all walk around the office, and trust that his condition is under control. It must be, otherwise he wouldn’t have came into work. Carol, John, Connie and he all are within 10 feet of each other, only separated by the walls of their cubicle. Within a week, Carol, John, and Connie start to feel rough, but Jacob is starting to be on the mend, they know they were working around a sick person, they knew to wash their hands, they trusted he would cover his cough or at least not go around and touch all the surfaces they share in common, like a printer or coffee area. None of them consider the chance they will encounter the flu they trusted their gut, the virus taught them differently. SARS CoV-2 is a bit like this in the way it spreads, this is known as person to person contact. Notice 1 person got 3 more sick and that none of them were described as using caution, like washing hands, cleaning or even asking him to go home (stay away). The only mention, Jacob was self medicating and trying to treat his symptoms.

COVID-19 is known to be spread like most other illnesses, through the droplets that exit our bodies when we are sick, via cough, sneeze, speaking, or laughing. Some of those droplets are big enough to be seen when we sneeze, others, small enough to be overlooked. This aerosol of germs gets breathed in by those who are in close contact with someone who is sick, they can also be picked up by touching droplets and then touching an entry point into their own bodies, like the mouth, nose or even eyes, however science has proven that there’s only a 1 in 10,000 chance you will absorb enough of the droplet through touch to cause illness, aerosol is the primary spreader. Let’s think about Jacob versus the entire office, what are the chances that 1 person out of 50 would hear his condition and think, or say, “Why doesn’t he stay at home, no one wants that”. Pretty high, none of us want to deal with a flu or any respiratory issues, covid-19 is no different, who wants to deal with a disease that aside from making us feel worse than a flu, is known to kill, emphasis on known to kill; no one. Let me be clear in this point, yes, influenza (the flu) can kill, covid-19 does kill and does at a higher rate than the flu, in fact in the 2 years we’ve battled this outbreak, this SARS CoV-2 (covid-19) has become the number 3 killer of people in the USA.

The reason I chose an office setting is because the droplets don’t necessarily get the same dilution in the outdoor as they do indoors. Indoors, the area is enclosed, the air is recirculated within the enclosed space via a climate control system and no filter will filter out a microscopic virus well enough to eradicate it; in the outdoors the droplets will tend to fade into a million directions and unless you’re close to that person physically, the chances of direct travel to you, are dependent on force of ejection via cough or sneeze and air currents and a host of other items you can still transmit it outdoors, your chances of being infected are still much lower than indoors. Think of this, we all know someone with flatulence (passing gas), outdoors the chances of the odor being smelled by you, are small in the wide open spaces of outside, however, inside the odor seems to linger and a few people will smell it until it eventually dissipates over a longer period of time.

When it comes to the corona virus (covid-19), there are things we need to know about the symptoms and why it’s important to pay attention. I am committed to our readers to bust any myth about symptoms that may help stop the “It’s just like the flu” thoughts, because covid is a bit different than the flu. It is widely accepted by all health organizations that covid symptoms appear (if they are obviously present) within 2 to 14 days, in comparison, the flu only takes 1 to 4 days. Another pause, look at that known statistic, the flu is 1 to 4 days of incubation (the infection period that makes you sick), whereas covid is 2 to 14. Though they have different lengths of time, they both share a common feature: you can spread it, almost as soon as it starts to incubate within ourselves to others, even with no outward symptoms and if you are wondering how or why, go back and read again the definition of a virus, it wants to live off of a host of living cells and multiplies.

Symptom number 1: Fever. As with any illness that brings infection, a fever can be present. We all know the average body temperature is 98 or so degrees; a fever is anything above normal, such as 99, 100 and so forth. Anyone experiencing a fever can take a variety of over the counter medications to combat it, however when it reaches 102 or higher, it’s time to go to the local hospital, in most cases, rest or antibiotics where needed are best, stop the infection, stop the fever. Other lesser known things about fever, it alone can cause: chills, sweating, headaches, muscle aches, dehydration, weakness, and loss of appetite. Covid can last 10 days or in some cases more, imagine a fever that you cannot break, but can control for 10 days that brings with it all those lesser known effects, now think about our poor Jacob, except give him covid, each time he coughs, sneezes or ejects droplets in that enclosed office, those who are unprotected, have a very high risk of also getting sick, in fact, in the right setting, all 50 of them, from 1 person alone, 50 fresh and ready living cells encountering a virus it’s never seen and the defense says, “crank up the heat, burn em out” except it doesn’t for 240 hours straight.

The list of known or possible symptoms for covid includes: Fever, Cough, Tiredness (those are the top 3) and may also include: Shortness of Breath or Trouble breathing, muscle aches, chills, sore throat, runny nose, headaches, chest pains, pink eye, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and rash. The list of known or possible symptoms for the flu includes: Body Aches, Cough, Fatigue (those are the top 3) and may also include: fever, headache, stuffy nose, sore throat, and only sometimes diarrhea. 15 possible symptoms of covid, 7 or 8 in the flu, nearly double, it is important to note, that severe infections are what you are learning about in this article, as with any infection, depending on your own body’s immune system, you may or may not suffer nearly as bad as someone else, especially older folks, the immune system starts to slowly stop working as efficiently as we age into our golden years, that’s not a myth, that’s a fact. I have provided a link at the bottom that will help with trying to figure out, what may be happening, is it flu or worse, if you’re not sure, please, go to a doctor and don’t go with just your gut, go with medical science. One other important item to note, sometimes the known symptoms or rather perceived symptoms of strep throat aren’t necessarily strep and only a qualified physician can discern between any or all diseases, because of the wide range of symptoms associated with covid, it is not wise to wait when someone is outwardly sick to get medical advice.

There are other dangers associated with this virus, including a risk of developing pneumonia, having to be intubated (a tube that is inserted down your throat while you are heavily sedated that allows you to breathe via machine), a loss of taste, smell, symptoms that don’t disappear for weeks after you’ve gotten through the infection (covid related cough), and in children, they sometimes suffer an inflammatory condition that affects other organs within their body and causes other health issues for otherwise healthy kids. Often, in our readings and intersecting of news we hear, “co-morbidity”. This term, simplified means other illnesses or conditions of the body that if compounded, could lead to severe illness or loss of life. Raise your hand if you have high blood pressure, now raise your hand if you have high cholesterol with it, congratulations, you already have a co-morbidity that if compounded (made worse) could lead to hospitalization or death, for example, a heart attack or stroke caused by one or both.

With covid-19, several factors that have been studied, apply. Underlying conditions that may lead to a more severe infection response, include: heart diseases, cancer, type 1 or 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, kidney disease, smoking, substance abuse, down syndrome, obesity, liver disease, lung disease, the immune-compromised and more, depending on how severe that “co-morbidity” is affecting your body, all those things already have our immune systems rolling to keep things going as normal as possible. Now, what happens when you encounter this virus is rather unique, because your immune system hasn’t encountered this particular type of SARS CoV, the immune system goes into maximum response, which as you can see, would take away any immune response from an existing condition and give it in return a super fuel whose only avenue to stop the infection, attack the cells it’s trying to multiply within, even if it’s healthy. Stop the infection response from our body is natural, remember our fever example, the problem then becomes, the body producing the correct anti-body to fight the infection, while destroying healthy cells so the virus cannot multiply.

That is some serious science, science which I had to read over and over again, to fully grasp what is going on and why monitoring our symptoms is critical. Some of those very serious symptoms include graying of skin or bluing of skin from the breathing issues it causes. I’m not a doctor, I’m a researcher and I can honestly say, that when an illness of any type, causes our body to destroy healthy cells on its own to protect the host, that’s amazing, costly, but amazing. The example: kill the kidneys to protect the body, the brain goes, that’s not logical, the immune system screams, I don’t care, all while you are coughing, sneezing, aching and having trouble breathing.

I can hear lots of folks say, “you’re fear mongering”, I will correct you now, what I am, is a researcher and the research comes from credible sources, I am not forming opinions that are not based on science, I’m not standing up on a podium screaming about conspiracy theories, nor am I trying to convince you to act or do one thing or the other. I am however, giving you the cold hard truth, about what researchers of this disease, including doctors from across our country and institutions whom no doubt have been busy over the past 100 years trying to save humans, from the atrocities of disease have learned and why all of them, not just some, all of them list the very same information with different case outcomes, some recover, some never see a single sniffle, many do die, and none of this is abnormal as with any disease.

To be sure, let’s review. Hundred of corona viruses exist, in animals. 7 are affecting humanity, one we haven’t seen since 2004 or so, another, with sporadic outbreaks in the middle east circa 2012, December of 2019 along comes SARS CoV-2, spreads across the globe inside 2 years, though not a “new” virus in the corona range, however, kills at a higher rate and is the number 3 killer in the USA, the symptoms of covid, are not like the flu, nor strep throat, nor a bad allergy. The disease spreads through person to person contact, via droplets that enter the body through inhalation (mouth/nose), has a greater chance of infecting those in an enclosed area than outdoors unless there is close contact and currently is affecting our planet with a variety of strains (variants). Now, if you want to know the tools on how to combat this by keeping your family safe and do it simply, here they are: wipe down areas regularly with soap and water, wash your hands, cover your face/mouth/nose when you cough or sneeze, stay away from people who are obviously sick and that will get you a good head start.

The rest, well, I will only speak from my own training through OSHA some 30 or more years ago, the reason the industry created masks, wasn’t to suffocate it’s workers, it was to protect them from inhaling things that would and could kill them both in the long and short term. I’m sure there are loads of workers who avoided black lung by being safe as possible, same as I am sure there are loads who couldn’t avoid it, and as to wearing a mask during this pandemic, think about this, suddenly you sneeze or cough without warning, nice little barrier to catch a ton of those droplets and it sure would help slow things down, and when was the last time the vast majority of us, actually regularly washed our hands after a sneeze or for that matter, used a quick burst of hand sanitizer. Doctors wear masks to prevent any potential infectious items generating from them entering into your body while they got you asleep, cut open and for real exposed to those microscopic invaders and to help reduce their own risk of obtaining anything from you, face shields, goggles, gloves, gown and bunches more. I will not address the vaccine issue in this article, but if I may, I’d like to wrap up with some personal food for thought.

September of 2020, my oldest daughter gets covid, original strain, symptoms are mild she has pink eye within those symptoms, she lives with us, we isolated from each other 14 days, the original length of quarantine in the early pandemic, though she feels rough, she makes it out solidly I and my wife, test negative twice through the entire thing, all we did was text our daughter, arrange a set routine, separated eating utensils and ordered out often none of us are at this point vaccinated.. November 2021, 2^nd infection hits her hard, this time, tonsils swell, runny nose, cough, fever, aches, fatigue, loss of smell and taste and honestly I forgot how many total items hit her. 10 days later, her fever and all is gone, still coughing, and weak from lack of eating. Again, same house, wife and I test negative through the entire 10 days on day 5 and day 7 of living within the same home, this time, we are fully vaccinated (Pfizer) when this one hit, but our daughter still isn’t. I ask you this question, did we test negative because of science or coincidence, were we lucky or did we stick to common sense and the proposed guides? On both of those occasions, we all quarantined to keep our fellow citizen safe without hesitation, please, whatever avenue you choose, work with each other, and as you do, remember this article, remember what we as a globe are fighting against, a microscopic enemy that kills young and old when given the right conditions and none of us until now, had a solid grip on what that might include. I truly hope, the holidays keep your spirits up, please, stay safe and look out for each other.

Juneteenth, why History matters – A Truth Glasses Food for Thought Article

Greetings to all, today is June 20, 2021 and until 3 days ago, only a small percentage of Americans knew the meaning behind the word, Juneteenth. Now that the United States Federal Government has officially recognized it as a significant date, I feel it is ultra important to make sure that not only the citizens but the Federal folks as well understand why this date in History, matters and should NOT be used as a crutch or used to pacify. Right now, lots are saying, “It matters because it marks the end of slavery” that’s right, but what happened leading up to it and why is it important? I openly criticized the naming of this holiday in a public social media post, I openly stated that we should not celebrate a holiday without discussing the History of it, that we could have done better with naming the day and the substances that lead up to it, including the path taken where many historical markers and statutes were removed because of the racist and ugly overtones of that historical war, I stated, we cannot erase the bad and only mention the good, it loses substance; with the suggestion we should have given it more substance in not just name but historical significance, not the first time I’ve been slammed, won’t be the last and I’m not ashamed of my expressed disgust and concern that many folks, will use it and might use it, to pacify an entire section of history. In this article, I will attempt to cover that very question in the hopes that the substance of the holiday isn’t just a blanket feel good statement nor will it be lost on bratwurst and beer. Let us dig into History and get dirty on the truth.

JUNETEENTH

Let us start out, by going to Britannica (the encyclopedia folks) and look at their article regarding this date (https://www.britannica.com/topic/Juneteenth).

This is the opening paragraph in their article: “Juneteenth, also called Emancipation Day, or Juneteenth Independence Day, holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the United States, observed annually on June 19. Juneteenth is celebrated on Saturday, June 19, 2021.”

This is the rest of their article: “In 1863, during the American Civil War, Pres. Abraham Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which declared more than three million slaves living in the Confederate states to be free. More than two years would pass, however, before the news reached African Americans living in Texas. It was not until Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas, on June 19, 1865, that the state’s residents finally learned that slavery had been abolished. The former slaves immediately began to celebrate with prayer, feasting, song, and dance. The following year, on June 19, the first official Juneteenth celebrations took place in Texas. The original observances included prayer meetings and the singing of spirituals, and celebrants wore new clothes as a way of representing their newfound freedom. Within a few years, African Americans in other states were celebrating the day as well, making it an annual tradition. Celebrations have continued across the United States into the 21st century and typically include prayer and religious services, speeches, educational events, family gatherings and picnics, and festivals with music, food, and dancing. Juneteenth became a state holiday in Texas in 1980, and a number of other states subsequently followed suit. The day is also celebrated outside the United States, with organizations in a number of countries using the day to recognize the end of slavery and to celebrate the culture and achievements of African Americans.

As we can see, according to their own “experts” it took 2 full years after the Emancipation Proclamation for the news to reach Texas. The problem here: The war was still being fought all the way through 1865, it didn’t just stop in 1863 and that proclamation came in the midst of the war. In fact, it took Union soldiers going to Texas to announce the freedom declaration before anything would start to change in regards to slavery. Let’s take a look at a different source, battlefield.org, surely there’s more here. Fact #1: Following the issuing of the Emancipation Proclamation on January 1, 1863, not all enslaved people immediately found freedom.

The Emancipation Proclamation freed slaves in states then in rebellion against the United States. Union troops operating in said states gave teeth to the Proclamation. This, however, did not apply to the Border States.

Fact #2: The Civil War ended in the summer of 1865. Union General Gordon Granger and his troops traveled to Galveston, Texas to announce General Orders No. 3 on June 19, 1865. June 19th would go on to be known and celebrated as Juneteenth.

General Orders No. 3 stated: “The people of Texas are informed that, in accordance with a proclamation from the Executive of the United States, all slaves are free. This involves an absolute equality of personal rights and rights of property between former masters and slaves, and the connection heretofore existing between them becomes that between employer and hired labor."

Fact #3: Part of General Order No. 3 encouraged the newly freed people to remain with their past owners.

“The freedmen are advised to remain quietly at their present homes and work for wages. They are informed that they will not be allowed to collect at military posts and that they will not be supported in idleness either there or elsewhere.”

Fact #4: The period after Juneteenth is known as the ‘Scatter.’

Undeterred by the recommendation to remain in place, many former slaves left the area during the original reading. In the following weeks formerly enslaved people left Texas in great numbers to find family members and make their way in the postbellum United States.

Fact #5: Juneteenth has been celebrated under many names.

Freedom Day, Jubilee Day, and Cel-Liberation Day, Second Independence Day, and Emancipation Day to name just a few.

Fact #6: Emancipation Park in Houston, Texas was bought specifically to celebrate Juneteenth.

The 10-acre parcel of land was purchased by former slaves, Richard Allen, Richard Brock, Jack Yates, and Elias Dibble for $800 in 1872.

Fact #7: During the early 20th-century Juneteenth celebrations declined.

The enactment of Jim Crow laws dampened the celebration of freedom. In addition, the Great Depression forced many black farming families away from rural areas and into urban environments to seek work— resulting in difficulty taking the day off to celebrate.

Fact #8: The celebration of Juneteenth was revived during the civil rights movement.

The Poor People's March planned by Martin Luther King Jr. was purposely scheduled to coincide with the date. March participants took the celebrations back to their home states and soon the holiday was reborn.

Fact #9: Celebrations of Juneteenth continue today.

Traditions include public readings of the Emancipation Proclamation, singing traditional songs, and reading of works by noted African American writers. Celebrations can also take the form of rodeos, street fairs, cookouts, family reunions, park parties, historical reenactments, and Miss Juneteenth contests.

Fact #10: On June 17, 2021, President Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act, which officially made Juneteenth a federal holiday.

This holiday is the first holiday to be approved since President Ronald Reagan signed a 1983 bill that approved Martin Luther King Jr. Day as a federal holiday.

An article of many facts, indeed, let us look specifically at Fact #3, #4, #5, #8 and #10, perhaps this will bring a higher significance and further our education on its importance. #3 states that those who were free, remain with their “owners”, which begs the question, how can free men have owners? Fact #4, a period known as the scatter, slaves left to find their freedom and families in areas where “postbellum” was existent. This suggests that many areas, even though declared free, didn’t want to comply or the “owners” couldn’t meet the terms of the now freed slave. Lots to consider, moving on to Fact #5, there are 5 choices in this fact, and in the social media post I mentioned that I made, I suggested that we as a nation could do better in naming the holiday and a valid point was made about folks probably won’t give a second notion to the importance of why it’s celebrated regardless of how it was named, but more likely will be another day of drunken celebration. Interestingly enough, the festivities that take place do include good food, dancing, park parties, re-enactments, some places even have parades. I still think that we as a nation should have recognized it under something appropriate to fit the event, I myself like emancipation day, though historically it’s already been used. Fact #8 shows that Martin Luther King Jr. recognized the importance of Juneteenth in the Poor People’s March, and the actual point of why it was significant was again brought to the light, sadly it took until 1983 for then President Reagan to actually make Martin Luther King Day officially recognized. Now, Fact #10, our now President Joe Biden, brings to light this Historic day, in an Act, recognizing Juneteenth, exactly 2 days before it’s actual date and adding another holiday to the Federal calendar.

Odd that the author’s of this fact sheet, didn’t catch that stating the war ended in the summer is incorrect, the dates considered historically accurate are April 12, 1861 – April 9, 1865, suggesting that the war didn’t really end until this specific event that took place in Texas on June the 19^th, 1865. I ask myself, “How is it that a proclamation, in 1863, took 2 years to get to Texas and when it got there, the citizens were told the slaves are free, while telling the slaves, stay with your owners.” The answer, the Union was still going through the Confederate states of America fighting against those who didn’t get the message that the North had won not only the war, but declared these people FREE in the land of the FREE right in the middle of the war. I also ask myself, “Was this holiday recognition politically motivated or has the Federal Government finally got the picture after 156 years from a bloody war, a civil rights movement, segregation, voting rights, the black lives matter movement and countless other items.” When we look at history, we see militarily time and time again where “black folks” changed the game when it came to this country, look at the Tuskegee Airmen, the Harlem Hell Fighters (world war one), Crispus Attucus who fought in our revolutionary war. An executive order issued on July 26, 1948, by President Harry S. Truman abolished racial discrimination in the armed forces, Odd that it was needed after such heroism displayed and duty, honor, service to a country that continues to pacify and try to hush their cries out for American Equality.

Then, there’s the recognition of Juneteenth, where even in trusted research sources, not any reference to the battles fought, the ugliness of truth in the war about why they fought. I also ask, “How many times will they fight for their truest freedom before they finally receive it”, so when I criticize the making of this day, because it feels empty, I’m not without valid reasons or at least valid history that shows, these Americans shouldn’t have to fight any longer, it shouldn’t take a federal holiday to get the rest of us to the right thing, is Juneteenth truly a stamp where slaves were free and black lives were changed or is it a historical event that deserves the recognition it needs, by calling it Emancipation Day and remembering that lives were lost so they could be free from ownership.

It is said, a good journalist uses no more than 2 or 3 sources, after that, it becomes long winded. Here is my 3^rd reference article in relation to Juneteenth, this one from the Smithsonian Institute (https://nmaahc.si.edu/blog-post/historical-legacy-juneteenth) their article is as follows:

On “Freedom’s Eve,” or the eve of January 1, 1863, the first Watch Night services took place. On that night, enslaved and free African Americans gathered in churches and private homes all across the country awaiting news that the Emancipation Proclamation had taken effect. At the stroke of midnight, prayers were answered as all enslaved people in Confederate States were declared legally free. Union soldiers, many of whom were black, marched onto plantations and across cities in the south reading small copies of the Emancipation Proclamation spreading the news of freedom in Confederate States. Only through the Thirteenth Amendment did emancipation end slavery throughout the United States.

But not everyone in Confederate territory would immediately be free. Even though the Emancipation Proclamation was made effective in 1863, it could not be implemented in places still under Confederate control. As a result, in the westernmost Confederate state of Texas, enslaved people would not be free until much later. Freedom finally came on June 19, 1865, when some 2,000 Union troops arrived in Galveston Bay, Texas. The army announced that the more than 250,000 enslaved black people in the state were free by executive decree. This day came to be known as "Juneteenth," by the newly freed people in Texas.

The post-emancipation period known as Reconstruction (1865-1877) marked an era of great hope, uncertainty, and struggle for the nation as a whole. Formerly enslaved people immediately sought to reunify families, establish schools, run for political office, push radical legislation and even sue slaveholders for compensation. Given the 200+ years of enslavement, such changes were nothing short of amazing. Not even a generation out of slavery, African Americans were inspired and empowered to transform their lives and their country.

Juneteenth marks our country’s second Independence Day. Although it has long celebrated in the African American community, this monumental event remains largely unknown to most Americans.

The historical legacy of Juneteenth shows the value of never giving up hope in uncertain times. The National Museum of African American History and Culture is a community space where this spirit of hope lives on. A place where historical events like Juneteenth are shared and new stories with equal urgency are told.

I’ve read every article presented in this article here, the same as you did, and as of this sentence, 7 pages worth of total information, not one reference to why Lincoln felt it necessary to make the proclamation, not one reference to any other battle or effort, only the very one in Texas that solidified, Juneteenth. Not a single moment, word or mention of Gettysburg and its importance in how the war changed, little mention of the fact that states seceded from the USA, to protect what they thought was the end of their way of life after all, the confederate states felt that their economic way of life was being threatened (History.com search query civil war) or even that Fort Sumter was bombarded several days in a row, or that for over 200 years black people have been literally fighting for their lives to be free. Here is my original social media post that resulted in healthy and not so healthy debate:

So, I got a question. A significant holiday, has been created called, “Juneteenth”. This is a great stride in recognizing what took place in History. An History, that came after a civil war that took thousands of lives and had significant impacts toward, Juneteenth. My question: When we celebrate this holiday, and we talk about its importance, will anyone point out how the removal of statues, that also marked the events leading to it, have been removed because of their implications of slavery and heinous things that happened to kill thousands of Americans? I’m not saying that both events aren’t significant, I’m not saying the new holiday isn’t important, I’m saying, the argument for removal of those items, doesn’t jive with the holiday. You cannot take away one, replace it with another, and ignore the events surrounding it. Point Blank, you cannot speak of the Union victory without acknowledging the Confederate history with it. All this aside, the best our government could come up with is “Juneteenth”? I’m thinking Emancipation Day or something a bit more solid. Juneteenth makes it sound like no one can say which date it took place on, so they are covering 13-19 just to make sure with a “teenth”. If you’re going to be politically correct about History and its impacts, you simply cannot erase the details and summarize it in “A battle happened some folks died and freedom from slavery became an official holiday over 150 years later.”

I admit fully, that prior to me writing this post, I had no idea that folks back then called it by several names, I had no idea a select number of states had celebrations taking place on the actual date of June 19 for centuries. What I did and do know, until this was made official, few folks had any idea it existed, few history books mention it, the civil war was ugly, the things associated with the slave trade and slavery were awful, and beyond humane, African American citizens have suffered for a long damn time. They have fought for our freedom in all the wars we have faced, there are several folks in History that have provided life changing items, tide changes in war, food products, leadership roles, doctors, lawyers, and loads more and 156 years later, we declare a holiday already named and celebrated by them, official and won’t call it Emancipation Day, which is exactly what it is and no one, not a single one wants to acknowledge that it was more than simply an army showing up and saying “game over” nor the irony of asking free men to stay with their owners. Oh, but we will take down those statues of the men of the Confederacy and take down the markers, move the history into closets and cemeteries where they will seldom be acknowledged, while forgetting that yep, the US officially recognizes the Confederate army as part of our military history.

To those who wish to use this holiday to celebrate, do so with gladness in your heart that the end of slavery took place on this date, but do not forget the battles fought to get to that point, do not forget the principle of why they wanted freedom and still do to this day. In truth, I suppose it doesn’t matter what we name this date, but it damn sure matters how we arrived at it, it damn sure matters when we discuss what changes for the future should be made and it damn sure shouldn’t take another 156 years and countless oppressive struggles, when we call every citizen here in this land, Americans and when we do, we sure as hell better remember, skin color didn’t matter when our country was or is faced with war. If this article or the post I made on social media bothers you or stuns you, it shouldn’t when it comes to this truth glasses wearer, I see this holiday recognition as a political avenue, full of promise, but empty in substance from the very people, who have made those empty promises historically and continually and keep finding ways to make life harder on them each time they make strides. The 13^th Amendment took care of ending slavery under law and can be summarized by these words: The Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution abolished slavery and involuntary servitude, except as punishment for a crime. Now, we should, more than ever take the opportunity on June 19 to not only reflect on its historical significance but use that history, to end the real slavery against African Americans, the slavery of restricting their rights, as American citizens. To all of you, we speak about change, but when it actually comes to it, it takes tragedy to get people talking and generally that is as far as it goes, talking. Don’t let this important day in our new federal holiday calendar become an excuse to ignore history, yes, celebrate the fact that slavery is a dead idealism, and work on the other changes that desperately need the very same focus. By the way, the term “Juneteenth” when I first searched for it or added it to this article, had to be added to the dictionary as a new word, that includes internet searches, that is how new the information really is, not even Google recognized it for proper spelling, only the related article and search queries. Pen Pal Project

We had the idea to write to serial killers and give them the opportunity to speak outside their confinements, through us1! We will be writing the serial killers listed below regularly. We plan to film dropping off the letters in the mail, and then when we receive replies we will read them also filming. That is if they do not mind us doing that. We will ask their permission to film their direct responses. If permission is not given, we will still write something at least showing that we received the letters and whatever might be included such as artwork. The idea is to build a rapport with them and see what we can find out or at best what they have to say to the world! Check back for updates often on the Studying Serial Killers Page. Sending the first batch out next week!

Hey Guys! Elizabeth Hall from C&J here to update you on some changes coming to the Blog. For our first new addition, we have added a serial killer tab which leads to our newly formed Studying Serial Killers blog where you can find all of our articles previously written on the subject, but also new content including new postings, and new projects we will be exploring in this particular fascinating subjects. Next week we will begin pen pal requesting some of those who are still around in the system, including Rosemary West, Dennis Rader (BTK), Charles Ng, and Kenneth Bianchi (one of the Hillside Stranglers), Gary Ridgeway (The Green River Killer) and Keith Jesperson (The Happy Face Killer).

There are a few more on the list but those are the most well known. We will film and post sending the letters off, then film opening them when we receive responses. One of the things that will stand out is that when we send the requests, we will offer them the chance to speak to the outside through their letters.

This subject has fascinated me since I was a teenager, and now at 50 years old. Now through technology I will be able to delve deeper into it, farther than I have gone before, by corresponding with these guys and gals, getting their side and then sharing the results with my readers!

I hope you are excited as I am to hear whatever they correspond back, as even if it is normal responses as opposed to what one would expect will still be interesting.

To Impeach or Not to Impeach, that is the law

Greetings Readers, we certainly are living in a complex era and if you live in or out of the United States in the year 2020, have access to any media outlet at all, you are quite aware that the President of the United States of America is currently going through a part of the process known as impeachment. Many right now are calling this a circus and say it’s a hoax and nothing done is impeachment worthy, some are angry that POTUS has to deal with this, some blame a specific political parties motivations and still others, are looking to take him out of office completely. Just the word itself sounds heinous, “Impeachment”, sounds like the end, doesn’t it? Perhaps there is more than what we see on the surface to this area of our government. Why would the founders of this country place impeachment inside the Constitution anyway, I mean, if anyone were doing terrible at any other job, they would just be fired from it, so why then does impeachment hold a different view or sting? Let us put on our truth glasses and find out what the law, history and critical thought have to say.

Impeachment is defined as: (noun) 1 – the action of calling into question the integrity or validity of something; 2 – a charge of treason or another crime against the state; 3 – a charge of misconduct made against the holder of a public office (Source: Oxford Dictionary). Before we bite into the realm of impeachment, I wish to make an open statement, this article, will not feature bias to one side or the other in the argumentative debate of Donald J. Trump’s ongoing impeachment, if you came here looking for a spin, an angle, a rant, a hard line opinion, stop reading. This article will look at facts that are known, from credible sources and this author, while having his own opinion, absolutely will not condone or condemn you the reader’s right to their own thoughts, insights, opinions or the like. My aim is to educate, inform and hopefully open up enough dialogue so that we can all understand just how important this part of our country and the laws of the land established are and will be for centuries to come.

EDUCATION AND THE LAW

To get a better grip on exactly what a presentation of the “Articles of Impeachment” correlates to, here’s a similar term: Indictment. When articles of impeachment are presented, they are literally a list of charges being brought against a public official, for committing crimes or for official misconduct, while they are in that office or position. Article 2, Section 4 of the United States Constitution states this: “The President, Vice President and all civil officers of the United States shall be removed from office on impeachment for, and conviction of, treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors”

What makes this interesting is after this section, no definitions to support what is meant by other high crimes and misdemeanors is seen in the constitution, no specific definition for bribery, but looking at Article 3, Section 3 we find a defined word: Treason. To which, is written: “Treason against the United States, shall consist only in levying war against them, or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.”

In essence, it’s vague other than the without a doubt items, bribery speaks for itself as does the defined “treason” per constitution. This leaves the door open for several items to be impeachable offenses under the high crimes and misdemeanors. Considering we are speaking in terms of criminal laws on the Federal level, a few examples of these (Source: Cornell Law law.cornell.edu) would include: Importing or Conveying False Information; Expenditures to influence Voting; Violations of NASA regulations and yes, even Failure to Pay Child Support. These can also be found in the US Federal Penal Code, Misdemeanor section. The listed examples are random and picked from a variety of categories but as we can see, some seem serious and others make us scratch our heads. The bigger question here is, does the Presidency or is the Presidency included in this list? The answer is yes and more - all from History. Though our History section in this article may not mention it, historically those shaping the document on June 2, 1787 cited adding the wording of “other”, would be a benefit to lawmakers (Congress) and it would include all established Federal laws, including any new ones that were ratified into the laws of the land, constitutionally by future Congress’s. That means the President, Vice President, Governors, really anyone holding a public office, can be impeached due to committing a crime that is detrimental to the country or governance it represents at any time, regardless of person holding that office. Now that we know the core of impeachment and the seriousness of its implications, we need to see what that process includes. We know: Impeachment and the deliberate wording was debated and placed in our Constitution, for cases where those who hold public office, whom may seek to defraud, injure, or commit federal level crimes, can be removed from their seat, legally and politically correct, of course the hardest part is defining exactly what is all inclusive in high crimes and misdemeanors. I admit fully, it sounds dry in theory, but US history has had several in trouble this way, indeed, a look into the process is necessary.

THE PROCESS

In the United States recorded history, no president has been involuntarily removed from office, Nixon resigned and many theorize that if he hadn’t he may have been the first, that aside, it just hasn’t happened. In the constitution, the House of Representatives have the sole power of bringing forward impeachment articles. The number of votes required to formally produce them, is two thirds of a majority vote. Because of the wording being vague, several debates as to what exactly are high crimes and misdemeanor goes on. For the most part, it is what the House of Representatives consider is worthy of being indicted. Congress makes the laws of the land, they have a heavy burden: Uphold the laws they create. Not to fret, there is also the burden of deciding what is indictable. We will look at those cases in our US History section in this article, not forgetting that we are speaking in terms of criminal law.

The founders did provide for a definition of these crimes in the constitution, Article 3, Section 2 of the Constitution, mentions the trial of all crimes except impeachment shall be by jury and that’s the Senate’s job. According to procedure (litigation.findlaw.com) both the House and Senate have the right to make their own rules regarding any impeachment governing, regardless, the starting point belongs in the hands of the judiciary committee of the House of Representatives; that means a formal investigation into the facts surrounding the charges. Included in their duties, they hold hearings, gather evidence, and listen to testimony of witnesses regarding the accusations; they also subpoena relevant information, a literal gathering of the facts, just like what happens before a prosecutor is presented a case to bring before a grand jury. Witnesses are then interviewed by the committee counsel and each of the members of the House Judiciary Committee. That same committee then formulates the Articles of Impeachment, which may contain multiple charges; again, using our prosecutor example as before, this is where formal criminal charges are presented. The committee then votes on those articles and presents them to the house as a whole. Then, the entire House gets to debate, change and vote upon acceptance of those articles and then presents them to the Senate. Here, we have a body of people where everyone in the room hears what has been discovered or thought, they ask what everyone thinks is it worthy or not of formal charges, 67 out of every 100 have to say yes, in order for the next step, having a “trial” in the Senate, to take place. Note: This way, not a single representative can deny knowing what the President or office holder has allegedly done.

The trial in the Senate is handled by “Managers” from the House of Representatives, being assisted by attorneys employed by the prosecution of the impeachment case. The Senate sits as a jury, just like the trials by a grand jury in our criminal justice system, where fair and impartial is the rule of thumb in considering the evidence. The Senate debates the matter and votes either to convict or acquit, if more than two thirds of the Senate votes to convict, the President is removed from office. If a simple majority votes to convict, but is not the required two thirds, he cannot lose his seat. Note: No President has ever been involuntarily removed by a Senate Impeachment vote to convict, PERIOD. Along the way, there may be items that also require a vote, but in essence, the prosecution speaks, the defense speaks, witnesses may be called or documents procured or even request certain persons to testify again, anything is possible but has to be done according to the rules of the trial, which is laid out by the Senate Majority Leader, then the Senate must decide whether the charges and evidence add up to enough to remove the office holder.

Let’s take a look at a scenario, hypothetically speaking. President Gen Eric commits a crime which catches the attention of the House of Representatives. The committee is formed; all the procedures are followed to the letter of the law, and a single Article of Impeachment comes out and is presented to the Senate. The Senate decides on the rules of the trial, hears all testimony and evidence, decides to convict based on overwhelming facts and according to the rules, the President must vacate immediately, the Vice President is sworn in, does this mean the end of the President’s chances as though the doors are locked and they are outta here? No, it doesn’t, and in order to change that, only one avenue exists: The Courts. While there are no cases on file for a President appealing things to the Supreme Court, the Supreme Court has had to rule on items relating to impeached persons. The case I refer to is, Walter Nixon vs. United States 506 U.S. 224 in 1993. The outcome: The justices ruled that they should not review judicial impeachments avoiding the issue, using political doctrine as their reasoning; in English, no one wanted to say that an impeachment, since it is by trial, could be appealed to the Supreme Court….I guess that door remains unchecked to see if it’s open or closed, only History and Time will denote when that happens, for now, nothing.

US HISTORY (TO IMPEACH OR NOT TO IMPEACH)

As we can see, to impeach a person who holds an impeachable seat, takes quite a bit of effort, all of which really has no time line of how long an investigation may last, how long or short the debates will be or the trial (without set rules) and that really no sitting US President has been involuntarily removed and yes, that does include William Jefferson Clinton and that whole fiasco, which we will be reviewing shortly. Just for review: House of Representatives, Judiciary Committee investigates and presents, House reviews, makes changes, then votes, once 2/3’s say “Aye”, Articles (containing multiple charges if necessary) are presented to the Senate. Managers (People from the House) work with prosecutors, presenting their case to the Senate, in a trial where all 100 Senators are to be the jury and decide the rules of the trial; hearing the defense (person accused side) as well as the prosecutor’s, then vote to convict or acquit and if convicted by 2/3, then removed. As is recorded in US History, no President has been involuntarily removed; however, 3 have been impeached.

Andrew Johnson (1865-1869) the United States 17^th President was the first President to face this part of the US Constitution. When Johnson became President, was during the civil war era of our history, from the get go, he vetoed several bills from Congress citing they were too harsh upon the south though he himself was a pro union democrat. Among the items he vetoed, was the Freedmen’s Bureau Acts, which provided displaced southerners and African Americans with food, shelter medical aid and land. The impeachment articles didn’t come until after he replaced the Secretary of War, then Edwin Stanton. This move, netted President Johnson 11 (eleven) articles of impeachment, which stated that he violated the Tenure of Office Act (a law limiting presidential power on removing persons from office) and replaced Mr. Stanton, without consulting with the Senate. Convicted on 2/3’s majority in the House of Representatives, all things seemed in order. President Johnson held his seat by a single vote, his defense was that he himself did not appoint Mr. Stanton in the first place and that removing him wasn’t a violation of the Tenure Act. This impeachment set a few benchmarks for the ones in the future, one of which stands firm: A president cannot be impeached for political reasons; they must be a criminal indictment which upholds the Constitutional requirements of “other high crimes and misdemeanors”.

William Jefferson Clinton (1993-2001) the United States 42^nd President was the second President to face impeachment and just like Johnson, he clashed several times with Congress throughout his Presidency. After his affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinski became public in 1998, the investigations into them concluded that President Clinton obstructed justice by encouraging White House staffers to deny the affair and that he perjured himself by denying the relationship with Lewinski when questioned by investigators. The outcome of Clinton’s trial again reinforced the principle of not for political reasons. During the trial, Senators agreed that his behavior was terrible, but that what he did actually did not rise to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors”; ultimately, he was acquitted and even though this left many shaking their heads, in the eyes of those who set the rules, nothing he did rose to that level.

Donald J. Trump (2016- ) the United States 45^th President was the third President to face Impeachment. Impeached in 2019, President Trump in the House of Representatives was impeached on 2 charges: Obstruction of Congress and Abuse of Power. The charges stemmed from a whistle blower’s concern about the President allegedly using his office to have a potential political opponent’s son, investigated by a foreign government, all in relation to a phone call that took place in July, the suspicion grew, because around that same time, it appeared that the military aid promised by the US, was withheld. The House Judiciary Committee concluded that President Trump abused his power, by asking a foreign government to corrupt an upcoming election as well as Trump interfering with an ongoing impeach inquiry by telling Executive branch officials to not comply with Congressional Subpoena’s. According to those Articles of Impeachment, officials claimed this fell into the category of (yep, you guessed it) “other high crimes and misdemeanor’s because it isn’t politically motivated”. On February 5, 2020, President Trump was acquitted, just like his predecessors before him.

With all of these things being tested on the Presidents who actually had Articles pressed against them, one would think Nixon would have had them considering how heinous that scandal was, but Nixon opted to resign long before the Articles were actually imposed, and yes there were congressional inquiries all over Nixon, don’t be surprised, historically, a few president’s have felt the heat of a pending impeachment vote. As is recorded in History, those presidents include: George Washington, John Tyler, Herbert Hoover, Ronald Reagan, George H.W. Bush, George W. Bush, and yes, Barak Obama. Each one, had a piece of their Presidency reviewed by a House judiciary committee, the closest that actually came to a vote: George W. Bush for war crimes; fun fact, under this Bush administration, GWB would place one Nancy Pelosi as “Madam Speaker”, the first female to host such a seat, who when those articles came forward against then President Bush, she stated directly, “Impeachment is off the table, it won’t be heard”.

CONCLUSION

The founders and original document creators of the Constitution of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, inserted wording, that would insure that anyone, who was convicted of wrong doings while serving in offices that hold particular authority, can be removed; that is so long as the entire Congress, through procedure and proper methodologies, agree, in both the House of Representatives and the Senate, to convict after being charged, which nearly included our very first elected President. The US Constitution, isn’t a perfect document (though a few believe it to be), in its core wording, it gloats racism (if not white and a land owner, you don’t vote), however, it also touts a bit of fairness, at least in theory, but in truth, the only time, in any impeachment proceedings that a fair and just outcome can be done, is with bi-partisan thought and attendance, for so long as the Senate or House’s political demographic is in sync with the President, the chances of impeachment are nearly 0, unless of course you were Nixon and rather than decide to resign, stick around, then the history would look something like this: Impeachments 4, Convictions 1.

In all of these items, this author must ask the following questions: Will the US ever involuntarily remove a sitting president and if so, what will it take to uphold the statement, “other high crimes and misdemeanors” to a Presidential Level? The average citizen, if they were to become criminally indicted, would be subject to the rule of law, including penalties for not adhering to court procedures; for example, wonder what would have happened if say Ted Bundy refused to adhere to any subpoena’s or say a DUI refused a court ordered mandate for DNA in a death. In our Constitutional views, none of that seems to apply when it comes to indicting the President or a high office in our government, which in this author’s opinion is highly interesting considering that we employ the very House of Representatives and Senators, through voting into a Congress, who makes the laws of the land and rarely seems to grasp the actual procedures desperately needed to uphold our democracy, why? Because not one single person, president, Supreme Court justice or congress has dared to define, ‘other high crimes and misdemeanors’ and no one knows if a sitting official can appeal this style of judicial hearing.

One last question for you the reader: Given the known parameters of each of the mentioned impeached Presidents, if you were a Senator during each of those trials, how would you vote? This author would have convicted 2, I will leave it up to you to guess which it would be and hope that while you consider those items, you use critical thought and careful wisdom against known laws (then and now), just like each of the Senator’s who heard those three cases had to do, over the last 250 or so years, thank you and God Bless the United States of America.
