Yup. 2019. Where did the mean and grumpy field and pro-shop owner go? I'm still right here. Not a field or pro-shop owner anymore, unless you count the telephone poles still standing with netting flapping in the air. The woods fields are still intact but are in need of repair. The Fort is in tatters, haunted by newbies who lost their paintball innocence to unforgiving "pros".

I still get my hackles up when people say, "Hey you had a good run (19 years). To bad you couldn't hang."

I could have hung. I shut it down voluntarily.

But it wasn't fun anymore.

The gun shed still echos with chrono shots and the sound of young refs ready to take on the day. I miss a lot about paintball. Some great young people passed through here and have become fine young men and women.

I don't miss the demanding customers, the politics of paintball or the idiotsyncrosies (sic) of owning a business. I don't miss the knot in my stomach that came from worrying about the one errant paintball that could have shut me down.

I'm still here. And hanging, thank you very much.

I'm rather content where I'm at. Not as high as the 1% and not nearly as bad off as the occupiers want us to think the "other 99" are.

Paintball suppliers - stop sending me airsoft ads and offers. I will not be lured to the other side. Nor will I be lured to another side - one more sport being whittled away by tree huggers and "concerned citizens".

I'm happy, most days, right here.

To many memories. To many opinions. Angel and Smart Parts with their Shocker opened the Pandora's Box that led to obscene rate of fire and over priced markers, two of my pet peeves that I know were the reasons for paintballs crash in 2004. How coincidental that both are out of business now.

There are no RIP condolences here.

have been greatly exaggerated. My existence over the past 18 years has been paintball. Life has finally caught up with me. A beautiful woman, a house to build and other projects have pushed paintball to the side. The field and store is still alive, thanks to the incredible care of my field manager/daughter.

Paintball will always be in my blood and writing for me is an addiction. The two will continue to collide, just not nearly as much as in the past. Thank you to the many who dropped a note wondering where I've been. Your care and kindness is what makes the paintball community a great place to be a part of.

Too hot to play

It's too hot to play paintball. Too hot to fish. It has even been too hot to write. Almost. I recently jumped into a subject that I'm sort of emotionally connected to. Here's something I notice more and more lately when salesmen pitch me their new paintball products: "our new two piece design comes in one length to save on your inventory." There was a time, before the industry collapsed around its glutinous self, that suppliers couldn't come up with enough versions of a doodad to toss at us.

Customers expected you to stock every color, every length, every size, every bore, every pack, half finger AND full finger, every up, every gadget, every brand and every product regardless of whether they planned to purchase any of it.

Many pro-shop owners tried. Many died. Fads come and go. Today's color is tomorrows gag reflex. I still have a number of items sitting in the back that may never sell. I could always hold out and wait for the day when retro comes in vogue - bring out the purple drop forwards and spyder venturi bolts. I think I might even have a "black box" or two hidden away somewhere.

There is a possibility that my field will soon be annexed by a town that does not allow the discharge of firearms, to include paintball guns. A battle is brewing.
