A tweet sent by Cortana's program
manager, Marcus Ash, reveals that inside of two weeks, a developer
preview for Cortana will be available. Keep in mind that the only
Windows Phone 8.1 users in the U.K. that will be able to see and use
Cortana, will be those who registered as developers with Microsoft. For
the rest of you, the personal assistant will be unavailable for now,
unless a hack is devised, of course.

Right now, only those in the U.S. with
Windows Phone 8.1 are able to use Cortana. In his conversations on
Twitter, program manager Ash said that while developing Cortana,
Microsoft learned a lot about scaling; that is certainly one of the
issues that the company would have to face when rolling out a project as
ambitious as a virtual personal manager, to a large number of countries
world-wide.

No word from Microsoft yet, as to when non-developers in the U.K. will be able to access Cortana.

Motorola have decided to revisit the
G-series of phones with a successor that intends to capitalize on the
simple and cost-friendly features of the first G. The model 1068 XT, or
Moto G 2nd Generation.

The panel of any device is usually the
most expensive single piece and the G2 looks to have kept the resolution
at 1280 x 720 pixels with a dpi of 320. In a world where 1080p screens
and even QHD displays (2560 x 1440 pixels) are becoming standard, the
720p screen still doesn’t look all that bad. Just five years ago, I
thought the 320 x 480 (180 dpi) on my HTC Hero looked fine. Heck, even
Apple makes such a big deal about having a 326 dpi screen that they gave
it a fancy name like Retina Display. The internals of the new Moto G2,
however, have been beefed up. The processor is now a quad-core ARM V7
(VFPv4 NEON) with an Adreno 305 GPU. The main, rear-facing camera, will
be an 8 megapixel sensor and the phone will have dual-SIM capabilities.

That’s all we know right now. No word on physical dimensions, amount of
RAM, internal storage or even battery cell size have been leaked as of
yet. About the only thing I think is safe to assume is that the Moto G2
will be running at least Android 4.4.x, but, depending on when it’s
released it could actually feature Android L. While the first Moto G
was $179 when it was released, Motorola CEO Dennis Woodside hinted that
the Moto G2 could cost even less. Personally, if the phone was announced
for around $100 unlocked, I’d really see no reason against picking one
up for a “just in case” spare. What do you guys think? Is Motorola on
the mark with this budget phone, or is it still not enough?

Apple has greatly expanded the availability of its 2-step verification
process for Apple IDs. While it was only available in 11 countries
previously, the feature is now available in 59 countries worldwide.

For those not aware, 2-step verification
or authentication puts an extra step between entering your ID and
password and logging in. It sends a verification message with a code to a
preset device or number and only upon entering that code will the
person be allowed to log in. This way, even if someone gets access to
your password, they still can’t access your account unless they have
access to the special code.

Apple 2-step verification is now available in the following countries:

If you have an Apple device, then it is highly recommended you enable
2-step verification for your account. Or for any other service you might
be using that supports this feature.

Microsoft having officially taken over
Nokia, we could be about to see our very first Lumia running on Android.
Courtesy of a leak by perpetual informant Evleaks, a “Nokia by
Microsoft” handset running on Android could be forthcoming, although
teasingly, we don’t have any further details at this point.

Given that Microsoft is actively trying to
promote and improve its own mobile platform, going for a device running
on stock Android, or a variant thereof, would seem an odd tactic, but
there are ways in which the Redmond could tweak the experience to suit
Windows Phone. By using the Android compatibility as a shoo-in to a
corner of the market that might otherwise have skipped a Lumia,
Microsoft could take advantage of the new-found user base and tie said
consumers into its own products.

But there’s a lingering feeling that,
despite industry pressure and the aspersions of some commentators,
Microsoft will remain defiantly faithful in pushing Windows Phone, and
part of this belief in the ecosystem may take the form of not building
smartphones for rivaling platforms.

Still, as consumers, we’d love to see
some the likes of the Lumia 1520 and 1020 running on Android, with its
broader range of apps and general flexibility. The cameras placed into
these handsets, particularly the 41-megapixel offering of the Lumia
1020, are market-leading, and while we’re not going to throw out the
confetti just yet, we’re quietly hoping that there’s some truth in these
utterances.

The shape of the job cuts reflect a

inherited from former CEOs

and Mr. Ballmer before he can reshape Microsoft as he wants.
Outside of staff overlap with Nokia, the cuts amount to about 5,500
people, or about 5% of the company's staff before the Nokia deal pushed
it to 127,000 people.

Microsoft declined to make Messrs. Gates and Ballmer available to comment.

The
company said the job cuts and undisclosed "asset-related" charges would
cut pretax earnings by up to $1.6 billion over the next four quarters.
Investors sent shares up 1% to $44.53 on the Nasdaq Stock Market.

Mr.
Nadella also showed glimpses of his blueprint. He plans to revamp the
way Microsoft organizes its engineers and will close a high-profile
project that Mr. Ballmer launched to create television-like programming
for its Xbox videogame game console. Mr. Nadella also halted work on a
line of Nokia smartphones powered by the Android operating system, which
had put Microsoft in the position of supporting the software of rival
Google Inc.

"Steve Ballmer threw a
massive house party for a decade, and now Nadella is there the morning
after cleaning up," said FBR Capital Markets analyst

next fiscal year in a position to put good money into the strategic
areas they want to focus on."

One an advantage for Mr. Nadella is that, unlike many companies that carry out large layoffs, Microsoft is financially healthy.

Revenue
is growing, and analysts project the company generated $22.5 billion of

me in the year ended June 30. The company's stock has
outperformed market indexes since Mr. Nadella took over, and a recent
turnaround in personal-computer sales is likely to prove a financial
windfall for the company.

His challenge
is making Microsoft relevant in fast-growing technology areas including
mobile computing. Executives fear the company's empire in corporate
software could be at risk if it doesn't act decisively.

Western Digital has been coming out
with My Passport drives for a while now. We have seen the drive getting
cosmetic changes over the years. But with the My Passport Slim, WD is
concentrating on making slimmer drives, which employs WD’s Slim series of internal HDDs. We had last seen the WD My Passport Ultra which didn’t impress us much. Let us see how it fares.

Build and Design

WD My Passport Slim comes in 1TB and 2TB variants

With the My Passport Slim, WD has not just gone for a slim
profile, but the build quality has also improved. We move from the older
plastic bodies to an aluminium enclosure. WD has stuck with simple
dual-tone finish on the My Passport Slim with silver colour on top and
dark blue on the rear side. It has rounded edges and is portable enough
to fit into your jeans’ back pocket. It is just 12.3mm thick which puts
it in the same segment as the Seagate Backup Plus Slim drive, which is 12.1mm thick on the sides.

Features

WD My Passport Slim 1TB is 12.3mm thick, placed above the Seagate Backup Plus 1TB which is 12.1mm thick

The My Passport Slim comes in two variants – 1TB and 2TB.
In the 1TB variant – code named WDBGMT0010BAL – gives 931GB of
unformatted space. The drive is powered by the USB 3.0 interface. It
houses a drive with a rotational speed of 5400 RPM and an 8MB cache. WD
also bundles in its proprietary software along with the drive.

The WD My Passport Slim has a USB 3.0 interface

The bundled utilities are divided into three main segments
such as WD Drive Utilities, WD Security and WD SmartWare. Under the
SmartWare utility you can backup data from your system to the WD Ultra
or even to Dropbox. You will need to activate the Dropbox access via the
activation code which you will be prompted to enter. You will have to
register your email ID and the utility will get upgraded to SmartWare
Pro which is a paid utility. You can even schedule backups or have
category-wise backups. WD Security allows you to password protect and
encrypt your drive. The final utility named WD Drive Utilities, allows
you to run diagnostic tests, set sleep timers for the drive when not in
use and secure erasing of the drive.

Test Setup

Processor: Intel Core i7-4770K

Motherboard: ASRock Z87M Extreme4

RAM: 2 x 4GB GSkill RipjawsX

OS Drive: Intel SSD, 80GB

Source Drive: Corsair Neutron GTX, 240GB SSD

PSU: Cooler Master 800W Silent Pro Gold

OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit

Performance

We used the native USB 3.0 ports on the ASRock Z87M
Extreme4 to test the hard drive. We start off with the synthetic testing
using Crystal Disk Mark 3.0 and ATTO benchmark. ATTO gave 105.94 for
sequential reads and 106.52 for sequential writes. Crystal Disk Mark
scores are as below.

For the real world performance test, we transferred a 10GB
single RAR file and a 10GB assorted file to get real life sequential and
random file transfer speeds. To simulate a file write we transferred
files from the Corsair source drive to the target Seagate Backup Plus
drive and vice versa to simulate a file read. After each read and write
operation we restarted the system to clear out any cache. Finally we
performed the intra-drive test. The results are as follows.

Verdict and Price in India

Western Digital has a good looking drive which performs
decently as compared to its competitors. In terms of raw performance, it
is slower than the Seagate Backup Plus Slim 1TB drive, but the
difference isn’t that great. The thing going for WD is the presence of
its utilities which is lacking with Seagate drives. But then, the
Seagate drive has social media backup, which is not there in the My
Passport Slim. It all comes down to the pricing in the end.

At Rs 6,895, the WD My Passport Slim offers a cost/GB of Rs
7.4 which is higher than Seagate Backup Plus’s Rs 6.44 (based on Rs
6000 MRP). Pricing for the WD is on the higher side considering Seagate
Backup Plus Slim 1TB comes for around Rs 5,100 now. Sure, the My
Passport Slim has better build quality. It all depends on what you are
looking for. If WD’s security and backup utilities are more dearer to
you than the Seagate Backup Plus’s social media backup, then go for the
My Passport Slim. But if you just want a regular 1TB external drive with
USB 3.0 interface, there are drives which start from Rs 4,800 for the
1TB variant with both WD and Seagate.

Angry Birds-maker Rovio Entertainment will be hoping to prove it's no one-hit wonder when it launches Bad Piggies on Thursday, just as players seem to be tiring of the game they've been addicted to for the past three years.
The new game will feature pigs which strike back at the birds who attacked them with slingshots in Angry Birds. A hit on app stores would give the Finnish company a boost as it looks to a possible stock market flotation next year.
Some
analysts put its market value at between $6 billion and $9 billion,
nearly on a par with another top Finnish tech name, phone maker Nokia Oyj.
Rovio was founded in 2003 and became a global phenomenon after it launched Angry Birds for Apple Inc's iPhone in late 2009. The highly-addictive game helped Rovio's sales jump 10-fold to $100 million last year, a fraction of the 38.7 billion euros ($50.2 billion) which Nokia
chalked up. It has remained at the top of gaming charts, with more than
a billion downloads, and had 200 million monthly users at the end of
2011. That compares for instance with the 240 million attracted by
offerings from US-based Zynga Inc, such as the Facebook -based Farmville.
But there are signs Rovio is losing its momentum. Amazing Alex, the first non-Angry Birds game in more than two years from Rovio,
hit No 1 on download charts in July but has since slumped to outside
the top 50, while Angry Birds Space has dropped fast from the
top-grossing lists.
"Rovio needs a big hit right now. Over the past two months, Rovio's revenue-generation ability has suddenly slipped badly," said analyst Tero Kuittinen from Finnish mobile analytics firm Alekstra.
Brand power
In Bad Piggies, instead of shooting with a slingshot, players build vehicles that help the characters get the birds' eggs.
The company said it was hoping the new game would breathe additional life into its brand. "We see Bad Piggies as a long-term brand-building exercise. In three years from now we want to see Angry Birds and Bad Piggies as strong vibrant brands out there," Petri Jarvilehto, head of gaming at Rovio, said in an interview.
Rovio
is also expanding into merchandising, modelling its long-term strategy
on Walt Disney Co by selling a range of stuffed animals and other toys,
as well as branded playground equipment which then bolster branding for
its games.
If successful, the company says it could go public as soon as next year, offering a possible payday to its backers.
Last year, Rovio raised $42 million from venture capital firms including Accel Partners, which previously backed Facebook and Baidu, and Skype founder Niklas Zennstroem's venture capital firm, Atomico
Ventures. Last year some 30% of turnover came from items other than
games, but it is the group's on-screen inventiveness which is the
crucial factor in its prospects. "Rovio needs to re-establish its reputation for creating hits with legs (staying power)," Kuittinen
said. "There is no doubt that the pig game will hit number 1 at launch.
But it has to stay in top ten for half a year to erase the doubts that
the fast fade of Amazing Alex has created."

Taiwan's HTC unveiled its first smartphones powered by Microsoft's
Windows on Wednesday, in a boost for the US software giant's efforts to
break into a market dominated by Apple and Google.
HTC and Microsoft previewed the 8X and 8S handsets in New York, boasting
that they feature "iconic

design," studio-quality sound and "incredible camera capabilities."
The companies said the HTC devices would be available from November through more than 150 carriers in at least 50 countries
"We've been inspired by Windows Phone 8 to create new smartphones
that give the platform the iconic design and personality it deserves,"
said Peter Chou, HTC's chief executive.
"Windows Phone has clearly emerged as one of the top mobile
ecosystems and is competitive against any other smartphone platform in
the world."
Among the carriers participating are US-based AT&T, T-Mobile and
Verizon Wireless, Europe's Orange, O2 Telefonica, MTS, Three UK,
T-Mobile and Vodafone and Asia-Pacific carriers Chunghwa Telecom, Optus,
Singapore Telecommunications, Smartone, Telstra and Vodafone Australia.
The news comes two weeks after Finland-based Nokia unveiled its
smartphones powered by Windows Phone 8, Microsoft's upgraded mobile
operating system that aims to compete with Apple's iOS used on the
iPhone and a multitude of Google Android handsets.
"Pairing HTC's beautiful new Windows Phone 8X and 8S with our brand
is a big milestone for both companies," said Steve Ballmer, Microsoft
chief executive.
"Together we are offering customers a clear choice and a truly unique
experience. I'm thrilled to take our longstanding partnership to the
next level."
The HTC devices have a design based on the Windows Phone Live Tiles
and will come in colors including "California blue," graphite black,
flame red, and "limelight yellow."
HTC will use and ultra-wide angle front-facing camera that allows up
to four people and more to be captured at once, which also allows for
high-definition video capture.
It said its Beats Audio "provides authentic, studio-quality sound that delivers the spirit of the original recording."
The phones will have displays of at least four inches, matching or
exceeding that of the new iPhone 5, and will use the newest version of
Corning's lightweight Gorilla Glass.

ADATA Technology, a leading manufacturer of high-performance DRAM
modules and NAND Flash storage application products, today launched the
DashDrive HV610 external hard drive, which combines a unique picture
puzzle design concept with a SuperSpeed USB 3.0 interface. A removable
smart cover provides a convenient and novel way to store the
transmission cable.

The exterior of the HV610
body comes in choice of two attractive monochrome patterns, each with
interlocking shiny and matte puzzle piece lines, and a matching USB
cable stored in the cool ice-blue cover, demonstrating the most
eye-catching street fashion style.

Compared to USB 2.0 in file
reads, writes, or data backups, performance of the ultra-high-speed USB
3.0 interface is improved by nearly three times, substantially reducing
the required transmission time by as much as 70%. When used in
conjunction with a USB 3.0 interface platform, it provides quick and
easy access to all digital archives. The HV610 has a sliding outer shell
that holds the USB cable when not in use and is a stylish and practical
solution to cable-management. The HV610 external hard drive comes in
capacities of 500 GB, 750 GB and 1 TB, and a choice of cool black and
twinkling white colors, giving consumers a chance to show their
personality and freedom of choice.

Purchasers of ADATA's
external storage devices are eligible for a free download of the latest
Norton Internet Security 2012 anti-virus software (60 day trial
version), and also enjoy three year warranty service, ensuring better
mobility, security and convenience.
If you've been paying attention, you not only knew Lenovo was readying a ThinkPad-branded Windows 8 tablet, but you probably already noticed all the leaked specs, too. Indeed, we first saw this thing
all the way back at Computex, where Lenovo gave us a fairly hands-off
peek, taking care to conceal most of the device's specs. Later, it
turned up in the FCC and in official documents, letting us know the slate would actually be arriving quite soon.
And here it is! As we previously reported, this is a 10-inch slate running Windows 8 and an Intel Atom processor. And yes, it will replace the current ThinkPad Tablet,
which runs Android. Other key specs include a 1,366 x 768 IPS display, a
10-hour battery, optional 3G / 4G, micro-HDMI output and a pair of 2MP /
8MP cameras. For the most part, that cellular connection will take the
form of HSPA+ but in the US, at least, the tablet will be available on
AT&T's LTE network. And, as we learned in more recent leaks, this
9.8mm-thick tablet makes room for an NFC radio, along with a fingerprint
reader and a pen, which can be stowed in a slot on the tablet.
Additionally, it will be sold alongside an optional keyboard, as well as
a dock with three USB ports, HDMI-out and an Ethernet jack.
The one thing we don't know? The price. So far, Lenovo is only saying the tablet will be available in October, when Windows 8 starts shipping.
For now, we've got a mix of glossy press shots for your viewing
pleasure, along with some hands-on photos we took in advance of
tonight's announcement.

HTC Desire VC up for grabs at R 21,999 in India

The Taiwanese manufacturer of smartphones and tablets, HTC, has
officially launched Desire VC smartphone at a price of Rs 21,999 in
India. The smartphone already went on sale across online retailers
earlier this week.
The latest member of the Desire series deploys a
4-inch display that renders a hyper-viewing angle for streaming media
content. With the dual SIM attribute, it enables convenient switching
between CDMA and GSM Networks.
The smartphone features a 5MP
autofocus camera with flash embedded on its exterior. It is powered by a
1650 mAh battery and facilitates a 1GHz processor alongside the
powerful Android Ice Cream Sandwich(ICS) operating system.
In
what is believed to be the most distinctive feature, HTC Desire VC
employs Beats Audio technology to cater to musical needs of the
consumers. It packs in 4 GB of memory onboard that is expandable via
microSD card slot.
For connectivity purposes, the smartphone
offers WiFi, a 3.5mm audio jack, a micro-USB port and Bluetooth 4.0. The
latest ICS smartphone is the first to provide its users with HSIA
internet for smooth web browsing.
HTC has also partnered with Tata Docomo to offer the device with a range of flexible data plans.

Another well stocked high-end smartphone

Details of another Sony handset have made their way onto the web, this time surrounding the Sony Xperia Mint.
We first got wind of the Mint name back in January, when a leaked roadmap of Sony handsets for 2012 turned up, with the Mint pegged for a September arrival and a price tag of 562€ (around £440/$680).
According to Russian site Mobile-review, the Xperia Mint (or Xperia ST30p as it's also known) packs a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4.3-inch HD (1280x720) display, Android Ice Cream Sandwich, a decent sounding 13MP camera with LED flash and micro SD slot.

IFA arrival?

The Xperia Mint looks to slide into Sony's handset range alongside the Xperia S (and Xperia Ion in the US), which sport a similar array of specifications, so similar in fact we struggle to see why we'd need the Mint at all.
This could well be an indication that it won't be making its way over to the UK or US, with Sony focussing the Xperia Mint on other markets instead – but it's likely to make an appearance at IFA 2012 in September, so keep an eye out for more information.
We've contacted Sony asking for more information on the Xperia Mint and we'll update this article once we hear back.
using methods they said work on virtually all such devices in use today,
despite recent efforts by search engine giant Google to boost
protection.
Experts showed off their prowess at the Black Hat hacking conference
in Las Vegas, where some 6,500 corporate and government security
technology workers gathered to learn about emerging threats to their
networks.
“Google is making progress, but the authors of malicious software are
moving forward,” said Sean Schulte of Trustwave’s SpiderLabs.
Google spokeswoman Gina Scigliano declined to comment on the security concerns or the new research.

Hackers say Android is easy to hack

Accuvant researcher Charlie Miller demonstrated a method for
delivering malicious code to Android phones using a new Android feature
known as near field communications.
“I can take over your phone,” Miller said.
Near field communications allow users to share photos with friends,
make payments or exchange other data by bringing Android phones within a
few centimeters of similarly equipped devices such as another phone or a
payment terminal.
Miller said he figured out how to create a device the size of a
postage stamp that could be stuck in an inconspicuous place such as near
a cash register at a restaurant. When an Android user walks by, the
phone would get infected, said Miller.
He spent five years as a global network exploit analyst at the US
National Security Agency, where his tasks included breaking into foreign
computer systems.
Miller and another hacking expert, Georg Wicherski of CrowdStrike,
have also infected an Android phone with a piece of malicious code that
Wicherski unveiled in February.
That piece of software exploits a security flaw in the Android
browser that was publicly disclosed by Google’s Chrome browser
development team, according to Wicherski.
Google has fixed the flaw in Chrome, which is frequently updated, so that most users are now protected, he said.
But Wicherski said Android users are still vulnerable because
carriers and device manufacturers have not pushed those fixes or patches
out to users.
Marc Maiffret, chief technology officer of the security firm
BeyondTrust, said: “Google has added some great security features, but
nobody has them.”
Experts say iPhones and iPads don’t face the same problem because
Apple has been able to get carriers to push out security updates fairly
quickly after they are released. Two Trustwave researchers told
attendees about a technique they discovered for evading Google’s
“Bouncer” technology for identifying malicious programs in its Google
Play Store.
They created a text-message blocking application that uses a
legitimate programming tool known as java script bridge. Java script
bridge lets developers remotely add new features to a program without
using the normal Android update process.
Companies including Facebook and LinkedIn use java script bridge for
legitimate purposes, according to Trustwave, but it could also be
exploited maliciously.
To prove their point, they loaded malicious code onto one of their
phones and remotely gained control of the browser. Once they did that,
they could force it to download more code and grant them total control.
“Hopefully Google can solve the problem quickly,” said Nicholas
Percoco, senior vice president of Trustwave’s SpiderLabs. “For now,

The search giant has added a scientific calculator to its varied array of features.

The company's new 34-button calculator appears the moment you type in
the word "calculator" or a mathematical expression say "4x5" into the
search box.

The calculator gives users ability to do everything
from arithmetic to trigonometric calculations. The calculator has
functions for calculating sines, cosines, square roots and tangents as
well as also dedicated buttons for Pi and Euler's number.

Not just this, Users can also use Google's voice search feature -- found in mobile version and in Chrome browser -- to do calculations without actually touching keyboard.

The search giant has also announced its Panda algorithm update (version 3.9) via its official Twitter account.

Launched in February 2011, Panda is aimed to lower the ranks of
low-quality websites and list high-quality sites close to the top of the
search results.
