Valentine’s Day is over but the love sticks around. Ever show up on someone’s doorstep with flowers or received a homemade card from your children or grandchildren? Love is overwhelming and soul consuming. It’s an extra packet of sugar on the sweet life we are blessed with. What some don’t realize is that love isn’t shown with over-the-top proclamations.

Love is simple and forever.

Love is a commitment that takes time and daily effort to create, develop, maintain and grow. It is about the small moments in life -- hugging someone because you know they’ve had a hard day; making someone their favorite meal just to see them smile; or quietly sitting next to them enjoying a summer night. Love is really the small moments that your mind wanders to. It’s holding hands in the movie theater, kissing your children goodnight before they go to bed, and showing your dog unconditional joy when you walk in the door.

Love is the motivation for everything we do in life.

Love starts within you. You cannot truly love another human until you love yourself. When you look in the mirror, be proud of who you are, where you come from, and where you are going. When you love who you’ve become, expand that joy to the ones around you. Find the people that make you feel safe and secure and hold on to them. Do everything you possibly can to make them feel the same. When you love someone, go out of your way to make their life easier. Our world would be drastically different if we did things out of love and put others before our own needs. There would be less greed, less heartache, less power struggles, less self-doubt.

Make it a habit to be more loving to everyone around you. That doesn’t mean you have to take your cranky neighbor out for a lobster dinner, but ask how his day was and genuinely listen and respond.
