Nnamdi Azikiwe Library of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka Celebrates 2018 World Book and Copyright Day in Style

On April 23, 2018, Nnamdi Azikiwe Library of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka joined in the global celebration of UNESCO World Book and Copyright Day. As an event that essentially celebrates the existence of libraries, librarians and writers across the world, the University Librarian, Prof Chinwe N. Ezeani put together a few activities to make the celebration memorable not only for the University community but for Nsukka as a whole.

Giving her opening speech, Prof Ezeani emphasized the importance of reading in the life of every human being. She mentioned academic excellence, socialization skills and confidence as some of the benefits of reading.

To further appreciate the contribution of authors to the growth and development of libraries, authors, poets, filmmakers and musicians, Fidelis U. Okoro and Jeff Unaegbu were invited to take part in a book chat anchored by Assistant Librarian, Prince Jacon Igwe.

The authors shared their experiences of how reading and books generally have shaped their careers. A senior lecturer in the Department of English and Literary Studies, UNN and a playwright, Okoro lamented how the tradition of storytelling and folktales are dying across Africa today. According to him, we are not Europeans and we are not full Africans; so, that leaves us nowhere. He urged that, as much as books which contain texts are important, we can’t overlook the essence of oral tradition in our lives. He also discussed how film and television are altering the reading culture in Nigeria, most times negatively. He mentioned reality TV shows like Big Brother Naija which has become the craze of most young people in the country but hardly contributes to intellectual growth.

A cinematographer at the Institute of African Studies, UNN, Unaegbu spoke about the relationship between history and literature. There is no mistaking the influence of history on his writing. Confirming this, he said he makes it a point of duty in his work to not fake history, to present history the way things happened despite whatever creative embellishment he might use. He also commented on the sense of direction of up-and-coming writers in Nigeria, saying they are having their own voice. According to him, these voices are unique and are very much different from those of Wole Soyinka and Chinua Achebe, and that they are being authentic means they can appeal to a wide range of audience. Furthermore, he said that it does not help creativity and reading when people judge books by their places of publication and not by their contents.

The audience was also treated to short lectures by Anthony Izuchukwu, a lecturer in the Department of Library and Information Science, UNN who talked about the application of ICT to improve lifelong learning.

Dr Harriet U. Igbo, an academic librarian in the library, talked about the need to inculcate ‘library mentality’ which she described as the urge to always use the library. She also urged staff and students at the event to avoid becoming aliterates, a word that describes people who are unwilling to read, even though they have all it takes to do so.

University of Nigeria Enugu Campus Library

The University of Nigeria Enugu Campus Library is one of the branch libraries of the main library at Nsukka a.k.a Nnamdi Azikiwe Library. The branches include the law library for the faculty of Law, the Medical Library for the College of Medicine and the Enugu Campus Library serving the Faculty of Business Administration and Faculty of Environmetnal Sciences. These branch libraries are within the same campus based on subject consideration for proximity and effective teaching, learning and research. In this respect, institutes in the university have their libraries.

Students are hereby alerted to download this and keep so as to enable them study hard to meet up with the dates. The library seizes this opportunity to inform our students that despite the ongoing strike by the non-academics, the library is open from 8:am Monday to Saturday, then opens 2pm on Sunday.

Remembering Late Mrs Charity Nonyelum Nwosu of Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, UNN

On Sunday, December 16, 2017, members of staff of Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, Nsukka were shocked by the death of one of their own – Mrs Charity Nonyelum Nwosu (Nee OBI). Mrs Nwosu, who died in a motor accident at the age of 42, was a Higher Executive Officer in the Collection Development Division where she contributed for years to the seamless acquisition of new information materials for the benefit of the University at large.

On February 5, 2018, members of staff of the library, led by the University Librarian, Prof (Mrs) Chinwe N. Ezeani joined Late Mrs Nwosu’s family and well-wishers in a Christian wake keep at her home in Nkpor Junction by Onuiyi, Nsukka, Enugu State. Speaking at the event, Prof (Mrs) Ezeani regretted Mrs Nwosu’s demise at a time when she was at the peak of her service to the University of Nigeria. She extended the University Administration’s condolences to her family, especially her husband, Engr Dr Cajethan Maduabuchi Nwosu, who is a member of staff in the Faculty of Engineering.

Members of staff of the University Library also paid their last respect to her as she was laid to rest in Anambra State on Saturday, February 10, 2018. Reading the Vice-Chancellor, Prof Benjamin Ozumba’s tribute to her, Deputy University Librarian, Dr (Mrs) Mercy Nwegbu explained that the University was grateful for Mrs Nwosu’s service. The Vice Chancellor also wished the family the strength to bear the loss.

Mrs Nwosu will be sorely missed by the Library. May her soul rest in peace.

If you are familiar with Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria, Nsukka, you will observe the latest changes in the library ranging from re-painting of the gigantic library building, replacement of old chairs with new ones (green in colour), and lots more. Going up the newspaper section at the second floor, there are some relaxation chairs for readers at the section. There are current newspapers and magazines which are consulted on a daily basis by internal and external users.

Nnamdi Azikiwe Library - Old Building

Wondering what building this is? This is from the library archive. It's the old library building which is located behind the new building. Tracing back to history, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Library, University of Nigeria is the second oldest University Library in Nigeria. The University Library opened in October 1960 occupying temporarily two tiny rooms in the Faculty of Education building. The University Library started from scratch without inheriting a previously organized collection. It was largely nurtured during its early years by generous donations, notably from the first chancellor of the University the Right Honourable Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe, whose donations totally well over 12,000 books, parts of journals and pamphlets on many subjects.

WHY I LOVE REFERENCE SECTION

Library is basically a place where information is organized, stored and is accessible to users on time. The major functions of libraries are defined in these three roles. Libraries acquire information, organize that information for quick and easy retrieval , and disseminate the information the library has acquired to the appropriate users . Reference section is very important and crucial in the library because it houses majorly research materials that cannot be found in any part of the library. Reference materials are very important that they are not meant to be taken away from the library. In Nnamdi Azikiwe Library , University of Nigeria ,Nsukka , the section is directly under the public services division of the library which means it has constant interaction with students on daily bases .Current and factual answers are readily given at the Reference Desk of the section .

A good research provides an avalanche of information that will help take a nation to the next level. It can provide information on how to tackle so many national development like food scarcity ,physical security ,national security and health well of the nation. Reference services include promoting quality research by the provision of an enabling environment, reference materials such as encyclopedia-general and specific, Dictionaries –general and specific , the WHO IS WHO’s in Africa, World books , world Historical sites and locations ,Guinness books of records and indeed so much more are available for your research, internet services, user education, Online referencing, university databases, open access journals, university repository are available through the use of internet services available at the section of the library.

The Reference Librarian teaches Internship Students

Today, the Reference Librarian - Dr. Mrs Justina N. Ekere took the intern students through reference services in Nnamdi Azikiwe Library. It is in the habit of the library to welcome every student on industrial training from within and outside the University of Nigeria, into the library system by having them go round each section under schedule.

The Reference Librarian introduced the reference services to the students and gave them examples of reference materials such as dictionaries, gazettes, maps, encyclopedias, etc. She added that the reference section is the first port of call for every student seeking information for conceptual framework of a study.

According to Dr. Ekere, the section serves various categories of users - undergraduate and postgraduate students, lecturers and staff, and external users. She defined reference materials as materials that are not meant to be read from cover to cover. She also made mention of e-referencing where users are being served via the Internet. Visit to UNN Library by the First Secretary, Embassy of Japan

On Thursday, September 28, 2017, the First Secretary, Embassy of Japan in Federal Republic of Nigeria and his team, paid a visit to the library after a courtesy call at the Vice Chancellor's office. In the company of the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), they were welcomed by the University Librarian, ably represented by the Deputy University Librarian (Administration), and other Deputy University Librarians.
During their chat, a lot of things regarding the library was discussed, especially collaboration issues between the library and the Japan system. The visitor mentioned that hopefully, the Nnamdi Azikiwe Library will benefit from a book donation project powered by the Japan Embassy.
