What to expect from a blepharoplasty (eyelid and eye bag surgery) with Dr Maurizio Viel 

Dr Maurizio Viel, and this twin brother, Dr Roberto Viel, see many patients who come complaining about the bag under the eyes.  Also, with age many patients experience the drooping of the upper eyelids.  Depending on the patient, the Viel twins will assess if the upper eyes or lower eyes will require blepharoplasty surgery.

The eye lid and eye bag surgery is performed under sedation and takes around 1 hour, and the patient will return home the same day.

Indications for blepharoplasty surgery

1) Upper eyelid surgery

Patients who request this surgery are men and women who often find themselves lifting their heavy upper eyelids whilst reading and performing simple tasks.  Women struggle to apply basic eye make-up without having to lift up the eyelid.

Despite the amount of sleep we get, sometimes there is no erasing puffy eye bags, and often, this can make us look older than we really are.  This can be a genetic problem or it can be the stressful lifestyles balancing work with family life.  Overtime, the muscles holding the fat in the eye bag gets weaker and weaker, and the fat pushes forward creating the eye bag.  A simple procedure can be performed to remove some of the fat to reduce the puffiness making the patient appear less tired and more refreshed after the surgery.

Christmas, a time of self-indulgence – Dr Maurizio and Dr Roberto Viel tell us why botox and fillers are so popular during the Christmas rush.

Botox

Why is botox so popular during this time?

Everyone has been rushing around to finish off deadlines, do Christmas shopping and Christmas dinner preparations that they have had no time to prepare themselves.  So the quickest treatment to take away some lines and erase the woes of 2011 would be to use botox.  It takes 1 0 – 15 minutes, and there is no downtime.  The results for botox are quick and effective.  Having been used since the 1980s, it still remains one of the most popular treatments on the market these days.

How long does botox last for?

Botox should last on average 3 – 4 months in your first year.  As your facial muscles get progressively weaker, the next treatment can be repeated after 5- 6 months in the second year.

Fillers

What are fillers made from?

Non-permanent fillers should be made from hyaluronic acid.  Be careful what your doctor injects.  Always ask if you are not sure.  Any other substances could lead to many complications.  Brands such as Juvaderm and Radiesse are very well known on the market.

What are they used for?

In part 1 of Mummy Makeover, we debated why more and more mums are turning to plastic surgery.  In part 2, we look at the different treatments available to Mums these days with Dr Maurizio Viel, and his twin brother Dr Roberto Viel in their clinics in Dubai and London’s Harley Street.

Ironing out the wrinkles

Most mums, perhaps with all the frowning and stress start furrowing their eyebrows to control their children, start to create heavy lines especially between the eyes – we look angry even if we are not, and homework lines that show on the foreheads, and not the mention the gorgeous laughter lines for every time our kids make us laugh.   Dr Maurizio and Dr Roberto don’t want to erase everything, or change how we look today but they want to enhance the current canvas.

The Viel twins suggest botox, which effectively relaxes the muscles, and the actual treatment takes around 15 – 20 mins.   This stops deeper lines forming ageing us faster than we want.  For them, the twins see it as re-training a group of muscles not to be over-aggressive with certain expressions and to keep the look soft.

It is apparent when a surgeon does good work because the aim for the twins is not to freeze the face (see Bree from Desperate Housewives) but to continue more natural expressions where possible.  The ‘frozen look’ is a more American style but the twins pride themselves on creating ‘the European touch’ which works on the canvas but subtly.

Lip Service

As we age, Dr Maurizio tells us, that our face loses fat from our face, our lips thin-out, our cheekbones, and there is a little ‘sunken look’.  Believe it or not, here is a surgeon telling us to be careful about losing weight after 35 years old. ‘The problem is that women these days are obsessed with removing all their fat but we need some fat to retain their youthful glow as it is the scaffolding for our skin.  If you have too little fat, the skin is more prone to wrinkling and sagging.’  True.   Dr Viel recommends adding to nasio-labial lines (the line that runs from the corner of your nose to the corner of your mouth), add volume to the lips and to the cheekbone area if necessary.

He tells us that there are two main methods.  We can use our own fat or a non-permanent filler.  He advises to avoid using permanent fillers as some side-effects may occur after 2 – 3 years.  Non-permanent fillers are much better because they are made from hyaluronic acid, which we naturally have in our bodies, and this is broken down with time.  This injection of volume into the face creates a more youthful contour returning the face to semblance of its former glory.

The Viels ‘Breast’ work

All of us who have reared our pod of children know how damaging pregnancy and breast-feeding are to our breasts.  Whilst the motherhood side is fulfilling the damage to our breasts is a whole different issue.  The breasts seem to shrink is most cases, hollow out at the top of the breast and in some cases sag a lot more.

More and more mothers do opt for breast augmentation.  The Viel brothers tell us that these mums do not want to flaunt larger breast but they want to return their bodies back to their more youthful shapes.  The one-hour surgery under sedation means that you can return home the same day.  The implants used by the Viels are high-tech silicon implants – when the silicon is sliced in half, the silicon remains in its casing.

For more pear-shaped mums, there is good news as there is a new technique if you are afraid of implants where fat is taken out of your bottom half and re-injected into the breasts area – AKA as the Organic Boobjob.  The downside with this method is that you need to have sufficient fat.

Muffin tops and saddle-bags

Most of us have found that after children, there are little pockets of fat that have grown disproportionately to the rest of our bodies.  No matter what diets and exercise you throw yourself into, these stubborn pockets just stick like cement.

Dr Maurizio and Dr Roberto were the first surgeons to bring to the UAE the VASER liposuction machine essentially ‘melts’ the fats gently leaving only freckle sized incisions.  The US ultrasound technology aids the surgeon to be accurate and efficient reducing the amount of bleeding, bruising and allowing the patients to recover faster.  It is so accurate that the VASER can be used to remove fat from the chin, cankles and bingo wings.  What to do with this excess fat?  You can re-inject it into your face to make you look younger – waste not, want not.

The problems with mums are that we are always struggling to find TIME.  The great thing about the Viel brothers is that they show how advance plastic and cosmetic surgeries have come along, and that patients recover much faster than using the more traditional methods because children are very unforgiving when you are recovering from the simple flu, let alone surgery.  From the sounds of it, most mums can be back on the their feet just after a few days, unless you want to milk the recovery with your husband for all its worth and play sick for a few extra days.

When we speak to some of the Viel brothers’ patients, they tell us that although their husbands were skeptical and almost against the idea of surgery especially in the breast area, they tell us that after the unveiling their new contours, their husbands are suddenly more attentive and helpful, and they all wonder why it took them so long to do it.  Funny that.  Romance is back in their homes again.

Mummy makeover with Dr Maurizio Viel and Dr Roberto Viel, plastic surgeons.  Will it be botox or liposuction, or both?

Many of us swore in our twenties that we would never consider plastic surgery, and in our early-thirties started to listen to more and more girlfriends talk about it.  Those of us in our early forties now are extremely interested as our youngest child is about 6 years old.  Perhaps we have a little more time for the first time in years to stare in the mirrors at the worry lines, laughter lines and all the emotions and evidence that comes with having a family.

Is it over?

Treat oversweating with botox with Dr Maurizio Viel
