Here is some history to keep your curiosity at bay.

Since the 17th century the Royals have been seen posing proudly with their beloved animals. Just some of the pets the Royals have owned are Pugs, King Charles Spaniels, Greyhounds and of course the most commonly associated – the Corgi.

King Edward VII’s pet was a terrier named Caesar. He outlived the King and at His Majesty’s funeral Caesar walked behind the coffin. As mentioned in a previous post, the current Queen is associated with the Corgi. At present the Queen owns three Corgis: Monty, Willow and Holly plus three Dorgis: Cider, Candy and Vulcan.

Corgis are mated with dachsunds (most notably Pipkin, who belonged to Princess Margaret) to create ‘Dorgis’. The Duchess of Cornwall owns two Jack Russell terriers, Tosca and Rosie. I hope this look into the Royal family has been as enjoyable for you as it has been for us.

If you wish to use your own land you will need at least two acres. You will need to have the land properly fenced off, if you choose to have a wooden fence it must be sturdy. Some electric fences are sturdy enough they can even hold a horses weight when the power is off. Wire fences are not good as the horse can get tangled in them. Obviously barbed wire fence are out of the question.

But an easier option is to rent a stable that you go to each day to feed, clean and exercise your horse, or have someone do it for you but this will cost considerably more.

Horses are expensive and time consuming but very rewarding, never underestimate the time, energy and love you need to give to take care of these beautiful creatures.

It is however up to the individual whether to choose real plants, artificial plants, or no plants at all, or even a mixture of both. An aquarium and its inhabitants can survive quite well without real plants.

Regarding advantages and disadvantages of live plants in the aquarium. First of all you have the decorative effect, even before fishes are added; the effect can be quite beautiful. As the Live plants grow they will absorb waste that is produced by fishes.

Timid and shy fishes can take cover in densely planted aquariums; some fishes will also see the plants as a food source. Plants, either real or artificial can be used to hide aquarium equipment. Just like fishes, plants do best in water that suits them; some thrive in softer acidic waters, while others prefer harder alkaline conditions.

Unlike fishes, plants are more sensitive to light; the majority of plants prefer very brightly lit conditions, it is important to use light that mimics sunlight, i.e. the correct spectrum. If you are going to use live plants in your aquarium the artificial light source should calculated correctly for its size.

There is nothing specific about this calculation, there are considerable variations, such as type of plant, size of aquarium, type of lights, their location, etc. In most situations fluorescent tubes are the aquarist’s choice and for many years now certain tubes have been manufactured specifically for plant growth.

As a rough rule of thumb, to calculate the tube/tubes you require, multiply your aquarium capacity (in imperial gallons) by 1.5, this will give the approximate wattage required, e.g. 40 gallons x 1.5 = 60 watts = 2 x 30 watt tubes.

Artificial plants are surprisingly life-like these days, they don’t require feeding, pruning, and thinning, only an occasional clean. There is no need to worry about artificial plants deteriorating, as live ones do, when one has failed to care them.

However any serious aquarist will probably value the plant life and its place in his/her aquarium, even though it is not an essential part of the hobby. Provided you have adequate filtration, your aquarium will survive quite happily without live plants. Otherwise plant as you like, as long as you provide adequate light and nourishment they will grow to give your aquarium an aesthetic quality.
