With Congress chief Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Manmohan Singh again meeting to discuss the proposed reshuffle of the Cabinet, the race has begun for key berths.

A new Home Minister from North India is likely to be appointed to boost the Congress’ chances in the Uttar Pradesh Assembly elections scheduled to be held next year.

Ghulam Nabi Azad, who is Health Minister, is slated to occupy Chidambaram’s chair. Chidambaram may be shifted to External Affairs though his own wish is to return to Finance Ministry by displacing Pranab Mukherjee.

Other sure shot seemed to be Dinesh Trivedi, the Man Friday of Trinamool Congress leader and West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.

During her recent visit to Delhi, Mamata Banerjee managed to get an assurance that the portfolio would remain with her party and her nominee would be in the Cabinet. Currently, Trivedi is a Minister of State under Azad.

Azad, who earned praise from Congress chief Sonia Gandhi for his handling of Jammu and Kashmir in his tenure as chief minister, will be the second Home Minister from the Muslim community–after Mufti Mohammed Sayeed who headed the ministry in the V P Singh government in 1989.

Incidentally, Azad had replaced the Mufti as chief minister of Jammu and Kashmir in 2005 and managed the state till the PDP’s politics over Amarnath yatra dented his image in 2008.

Congress sources say Azad has emerged the choice of Sonia Gandhi and the PM because of his vast political expertise, and his cordial ties with most Opposition leaders.

Azad’s rise as Home Minister, however, could mean clipping of wings of Ahmed Patel, currently political aide of Sonia Gandhi. Both are bitter rivals.

Azad is known as a liberal leader, whose style of functioning will diametrically opposite to Chidambaram who was seen as too bureaucratic and “babu-like” in most matters.

Azad’s appointment will also mean dashing of hopes of AICC general secretary Digvijaya Singh who would love to take up the ministerial job– but for his self-imposed ten-year ban of not occupying any position in government since he lost the Madhya Pradesh assembly polls in 2003.

External Affairs S.M. Krishna could be sent to Tamil Nadu as governor in place of S S Barnala who has served a long term.

Chidambaram moving into the External Affairs Ministry could upset the plans of Commerce Minister Anand Sharma, who is also trying hard for that portfolio.

Notwithstanding the row over bugging of his offices, Mukherjee still looks firmly in saddle in the North Block– even if the PM and a section of the industry wants a change.

Left to himself, Manmohan Singh would prefer to have either Planning Commission Deputy Chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia or C Rangarajan, former governor of Reserve Bank of India and Andhra Pradesh– as the new Finance Minister.

After Mamata Banerjee shifted to the Writers Building, the PM took charge of the Railway Ministry. Mamata banerjee wanted her right-hand man, TMC leader Mukul Roy, who is already a Minister of State, to be given charge at the Cabinet-level.

There was also speculation that she might agree to part with Railways and allow a Congress minister to be put in her place in exchange of another TMC leader being inducted in the Cabinet. But with the Prime Minister reluctant to appoint Roy, the choice has fallen on Trivedi to be elevated as Railway Minister. Trivedi is backed by Ahmed Patel, fellow Gujarati.

Officials say Prime Minister has done a performance assessment exercise of the ministries and ministers. He wants a major overhaul of his Cabinet and a few younger ministers given more important roles to refurbish the government’s image. It may be the last big reshuffle before next Lok Sabha polls.

The buzz is that Law Minister Veerappa Moily could be shifted to another porfolio. Statistics and Programme Implementation Minister M.S. Gill and Rural Development Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh may be made to exit the Cabinet.

In fact, Chidambaram appeared to give sufficient hint when he was interviewed by NDTV over the weekend– on the changes in the Cabinet and whether he would stay as Home Minister. Here is the transcript:

Chidambaram: Do I have a choice? I don’t think I have a choice. These decisions are made by two people in our system today. One, the Congress President because I belong to the Congress Party and the other is the Prime Minister. We simply accept their decisions.

NDTV: You stepped down as Finance Minister, right after 26/11 .It’s been 3 years now. Would you say this is a job you want to keep or do you want to change portfolio?

Chidambaram: I have been in this job now (for) two-and-a-half years plus 25 days. I don’t know if I told you, in the security system we live one day at a time. It is like what Nadal said day before yesterday — I play one match at a time. I am not looking at meeting Federer or Djokovic in the final. I play one match at a time. So we live one day at a time. So I have a very accurate count of the number of days. But that’s not the point. The point is this is a tough job and sometimes one has to be out of your own character in order to do this job. I think many times I act and conduct myself quite contrary to my true character, when I have to deal with the issues that come with this job. This is a physically and mentally challenging job. The Finance Minister’s job is an intellectually challenging job. The job of the Minister of the Environment is an emotionally satisfying job, so I think these are different jobs. Now what job I will have, or whether I will have a job at all, I can’t say. I may not have a job at all

NDTV: Like many politicians do you aim for the top job?

Chidambaram: I know what I want to do in the remaining years of my life. I want to read, I want to travel and above all I want to write. I think inside me there is a writer. I can’t write as felicitously as Arundhati Roy. I disagree with her on everything, but I love the style in which she writes. I think she is the best Indian writer today. What she writes is, of course, highly provocative, but she is the best writer, be that as it may. So I want to read, travel and write. Now if you tell me that there is an afterlife and I can read, travel and write in the afterlife, if I am remain to be political for the rest of my life. Now I don’t believe in the afterlife, I have to find the time for doing those things in this lifetime.(end)

Meet Manmohan Singh, our PM-in-hiding

Twenty years ago, Manmohan Singh was a man with a mission. After his first Budget as finance minister, he barged into a post-Budget press conference called by his officials, to personally explain what he was doing. He gave lengthy interviews; he spoke from virtually every available platform, to get across the need for change.

Later, when Narasimha Rao announced a series of Independence Day handouts, Dr Singh gave an interview to say that the country could not spend its way to prosperity (Sonia Gandhi, please note).

And towards the end of the Rao government's tenure, when the atmosphere became thick with deal-making, he spoke out courageously against crony capitalism.

The contrast with today could not be more striking, as the country seems to have a prime minister-in-hiding. You see him seated at meetings, looking a trifle lost, or mouthing homilies at government functions (the MAFA syndrome -- mistaking articulation for action). Other than that, he is both invisible and silent. This is no way to lead.

If his government is paralysed by inaction, and tarred comprehensively with the corruption brush, it is because Dr Singh has not been true to his instincts, and too timid as the head of the government.

Dayanidhi Maran as a stripling minister wrote to him in 2006, complaining that spectrum pricing should be left to him, not handed over to a group of ministers. Dr Singh meekly acquiesced.

Mani Shankar Aiyar wrote to him two years before the Commonwealth Games, before the bloated and wasteful spending began, to complain about Mr Kalmadi's budget-inflating habits. Yet Mr Kalmadi was allowed to go his merry way till the damage was done.

When A Raja cocked a snook at him, what was the response? Dr Singh's private secretary made the telltale request that the prime minister's office be kept at arm's length. In other words, he knew that skullduggery was going on, but wanted to turn a blind eye.

On the spectrum scandal, he himself has explained that once two of his ministerial colleagues were in agreement, he did not think he could intervene!

And now it transpires that a former secretary in the finance ministry (E A S Sarma) wrote repeatedly to the prime minister, over two years, warning him of undue favours being done to private gas concessionaires like Reliance and Cairn, at the cost of the exchequer. He never got even a routine acknowledgement. Was Dr Singh too scared to ask Murli Deora?

So the prime minister cannot say that he did not know. In every case, he was informed, and he chose to do nothing. This is not because he was corrupt; even his worst critics will not say that.

Perhaps he felt there was no choice in a coalition other than to turn a blind eye to some goings-on (he once said something like "I am not in the business of losing my government's majority").

But if an honest and public-spirited man allows scamsters around him to flourish, the stage comes when personal honesty is no longer a valid defence. And belated action under public and court pressure provides no absolution.

What about the government's policy paralysis? Speaking at an awards function three months ago, Dr Singh had said, "I sense a mood for renewal, as I did 20 years ago. We did not disappoint India in the summer of 1991. We will grasp the nettle once again, in the summer of 2011."

Well, the summer is ending, the rainy season has come, and this now looks like yet another case of MAFA. If this does not change very quickly, the question will be asked: is the useful life of this

Is India Still Paying the Price of Nehru’s Follies?

Mumbai: Criticism of Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru is still considered blasphemous by many, who feel his contribution is immense and sacrosanct. But years after his death he has been brought down from the pedestal many a time, much to the chagrin of the Nehru-Gandhi family.

His overriding love for great principles, notwithstanding, his inability to take timely decisions, his failure to work in tandem with iron men like Sardar Patel, and his intimacy with the Mountbattens or Sheikh Abdullah, who had their own axe to grind, worked as a blindfold. So much so that he was hemmed in and could not further India’s interests to the extent he should have. The consequences have been tragic and the muddle created 64 years ago remains just that.

Had Patel been nominated Prime Minister or had more of a free hand and had Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose been around and stayed in the Congress, India’s destiny would most likely have been different. Nehru needed to be more amenable and should have given more credence to colleagues like Patel later and Netaji earlier.

Subhas Bose’s presence then or the lack of it, has never been fully debated and has remained veiled. Infosys chief N R Narayana Murthy’s scathing observations recently, where he said Netaji would have led India past China and would have been a foil to conservative Nehru, throws more light on where the first Prime Minister went wrong.

It was in 1946. The Working Committee and Pradesh Committees of the Indian National Congress (INC) had to make the most critical choice of its history – elect its president – who would become the first Prime Minister of Independent India. There were three candidates in the running – Acharya Kripalani, Sardar Patel and Jawaharlal Nehru. Sardar Patel was the clear frontrunner, with 12 out of 19 Pradesh Committees backing him. None backed Nehru.

However, despite being the popular choices in the INC, first Kripalani and then Patel had to withdraw their nominations on Mahatma Gandhi’s insistence, so that “Nehru could be elected unopposed”. Gandhi unabashedly backed Nehru for the Congress president’s post under the pretext: “Jawaharlal cannot be replaced today whilst the charge is being taken from the British. He, a Harrow boy, a Cambridge graduate, and a barrister, is wanted to carry on the negotiations with the Englishmen.” Dr Rajendra Prasad later said: “Gandhi has once again sacrificed his trusted lieutenant for the sake of the glamorous Nehru.”

Call it an irony of fate. Life came a full circle for Patel. In 1939, when Netaji Subhas Chandra decided to seek re-election to the Congress president’s post, Patel had sided with Gandhi to support Pattavi Sitaramaiya’s candidature. Patel had openly criticised Bose for seeking re-election. But, Bose was not Patel, and he went ahead with his decision, defying the Mahatma’s dictat. He was re-elected with an overwhelming mandate.

Soon, the conflicting aspects in Nehru’s persona came to the fore. On the one hand, he was a democrat and a revolutionary; on the other, he was often carried away by his ‘socialist’ ideals to the point of playing with India’s destiny.

After his election as Congress president, he gave his support to his friend Sheikh Abdullah (he called him his ‘blood brother’) who had been jailed by Maharaja Hari Singh of Kashmir. In June 1946, he decided to go to the valley to free Abdullah. The situation was certainly not shining in Kashmir (as in the rest of India), but to take on the maharaja at this point in time was a serious mistake.

In a letter to D P Mishra, Patel explained: “He [Nehru] has done many things recently which have caused us great embarrassment. His actions in Kashmir … are acts of emotional insanity and it puts tremendous strain on us to set the matters right.”

Things came to a head at the end of October 1947 when raiders from the North West Frontier Province entered the state, killing, looting, and raping along. On October 26, they had reached the outskirts of Srinagar. Hari Singh agreed to sign the Instrument of Accession.

On the same day a historic meeting was held in Delhi with Mountbatten, the governor general, as chairman. A young army colonel named Sam Manekshaw, who attended the meeting, recalled: “As usual Nehru talked about the United Nations, Russia, Africa, God Almighty, everybody, until Sardar Patel lost his temper. He said, “Jawaharlal, do you want Kashmir, or do you want to give it away?” He [Nehru] said, “Of course, I want Kashmir.” Then he [Patel] said: “Please give your orders.” Nehru was still silent. Patel turned to the general and said, “You have your orders.”

Nehru wrote letters to Edwina every day, after she left India, until her death. In his letters, Nehru often sought Edwina’s advice on matters of governance and strategy, according to British author Janet Morgan who was given access to the correspondence by the Mountbatten family. Morgan was given a small box weighing more than five pounds. The box contained all the letters Nehru wrote to Edwina between 1948 and 1960. A few of them even had a rose pressed between the pages.

According to Morgan, in one of those letters, Pandit Nehru apparently wrote about the embarrassment VK Krishna Menon, India’s first high commissioner to the Court of St. James, had become. In another letter, Nehru apprised Lady Mountbatten about how difficult it had become to deal with colleagues in the Congress party. Edwina’s reply could not be known as the Nehru-Gandhi family preferred to keep those letters under wraps.

Such letters bear testimony to the fact that Edwina often had a piece of advice for Nehru on political matters. When Edwina died, Nehru’s letters were found scattered on her bed. Nehru had sent a wreath of marigolds to be dropped in the English Channel.

Pamela Mountbatten, daughter of Lord Mountbatten and Edwina, in an interview to Karan Thapar on Devil’s Advocate, said that the Edwina-Nehru relationship was also of use to her father. And that Lord Mountbatten often appealed to Panditji given the influence Edwina had; this was particularly useful while handling tricky situations like Kashmir.

“He (Lord Mountbatten) did use her (Edwina Mountbatten) in such ways. But he certainly wasn’t going to throw her, he didn’t say to her ‘go and become the Prime Minister’s (Nehru) lover, because I need you to intercede.’ It was a by-product of this deep affection.”

When asked to comment on many people’s belief in India that the decision Nehru took to refer the Kashmir issue to the UN was taken under her father’s advice. Could that have been an area where Edwina’s influence had been particularly useful?

“I think it could have been. Because Panditji, being a Kashmiri, of course, inevitably the emotional side comes in from one’s own country, doesn’t it? And my father just in dry conversation might not have been able to get his viewpoint over, but with my mother translating it for Panditji and making, you know, appealing to his heart more than his mind that he should really behave like this. I think probably that did happen.”

Pamela added, “But what was the important outcome of it all, was really for the good of India. And I think Ms. Gandhi, when she became Prime Minister; she was a very clever politician, an amazing woman. But Panditji was a real statesman, it never occurred to him to make anything out of his position; he never made money out of it. He was the real idealist, for the good of India, always.”

Although it is quite hard to believe that Nehru had abandoned principle and patriotism in deference to Edwina’s charms, even Patel said: “but in spite of all these innocent indiscretions he has unparalleled enthusiasm and a burning passion for freedom”, there is little doubt that he did commit a series of historic blunders. In fact, one of Nehru’s biggest blunders was to retain Lord Mountbatten as the Governor General of independent India. Probably, he could not trust any Congress leader for that role, and preferred to rely on a person he “admired” a lot.

The next month Lord Mountbatten put himself in a strange situation, where he as the titular head of India decided to go to Karachi to negotiate a solution to the Kashmir issue with Mohammed Ali Jinnah and Liaquat Ali Khan under the instructions of his ‘employer’ based in London. For strategic reasons, Britain was inclined towards Pakistan and Mountbatten was reportedly given the responsibility to ensure that India did not take any steps to flush out the infiltrators from Jammu & Kashmir. By the end of 1947, Mountbatten had convinced Nehru to refer the Kashmir issue to the UN. He made Nehru believe that it was the “only solution”.

On 20 December 1947, Nehru reluctantly accepted the idea, amid strong opposition from a large section of the Congress leadership, including Sardar Patel. Mountbatten succeeded in implementing the designs of the then British Prime Minister Clement Attlee. On one hand, he continued to highlight the dangers of military escalation to Nehru, on the other, he smuggled confidential information to Attlee. It was during those days when Edwina probably managed to make it “appealing to his heart more than his mind”. The events that followed are well known. India’s case was buried in the bureaucratic corridors of the UN; the infiltrators were allowed to remain on Indian soil, what later came to be known as Pak Occupied Kashmir (PoK).

The latest veiled criticism of Nehru comes from N R Narayana Murthy, Infosys chief. He said on January 23, the 114^th birth anniversary of Netaji that India would have seized its opportunities better and faster than China and climbed to the second spot on the world economic ladder by now had Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose played a role in building the nation. “He would have been a perfect foil to Jawaharlal Nehru’s more conservative approach to industrialization, opposed the licence raj and might even have prevented Partition.”

The number in the headline is the amount of money looted by the UPA government from taxpayers and investors since 2004. And all this is from just one sector: petroleum.

The only difference between a Ramalinga Raju, who raided Satyam’s cash chest to bankroll his infrastructure dreams, and the government, which dipped into public sector assets to finance its re-election, is this: Raju cannot legislate away his crimes. Government can.

Let’s go back to the first number: Rs2,80,795 crore. I owe this piece of info to my colleague Mayank Aggarwal, who had put in an RTI query to the ministry of petroleum and natural gas asking them how much money was transferred from profit-making oil companies to loss-making ones to fund the subsidisation of kerosene, cooking gas and diesel (among other things).

The answer he got was frightening. Between 2004-05 and 2009-10, the three most profitable oil and gas companies (ONGC, GAIL and Oil India) were summarily asked to hand over Rs1,12,592 crore to three loss-making oil marketing companies.

That’s nearly three times the current year’s central outlay for NREGA, the flagship social security scheme of the UPA. But even Rs1,12,592 crore wasn’t enough to staunch the bleeding of Indian Oil, BPCL and HPCL. Over and above the robbery of three profit-making oil companies, the government had to raid the taxpayer’s chest for another Rs1,68,203 crore over 2005-10 (paid through oil bonds) to ensure the marketing companies stayed afloat.

Now, let’s restate the full extent of the skullduggery. To ensure that oil prices did not rock its electoral boat, it transferred Rs1,12,592 crore from publicly-listed profit-makers to the loss-makers, but there’s a procedural complication here.

The government itself owns majority stakes in these profit-makers, so the real extent of money transferred from private investors is equal only to the level of public shareholding in these companies.

Since the public shareholding is 25.86% in ONGC, 21.57% in Oil India and 42.18% in GAIL, private investors were cheated of Rs29,991 crore in the process. That’s their share of profits in ONGC, Oil India and GAIL that got transferred to the marketing companies. Investors in these three companies can approach Sebi and ask it to take action against the promoter (the government) for corporate misgovernance and misappropriation of shareholders funds.

To be sure, this is not a point that has not been made before. What we are now clear about is the exact extent of the government’s bad politico-economic decisions that investors and taxpayers finally ended up paying for.

Misgovernance and fraud is built into the public sector primarily because politicians use public assets for private ends, including financing their own re-election.

Let’s also remember, the Rs2,80,795 crore scandal is only the tip of the iceberg. If we add up the subsidies handed over to fertiliser companies, farmers and the Food Corporation of India (a substantial part of the grain mountain that is now being fed to rats), the losses will be truly stupendous.

The best thing the UPA did recently was thus to move towards oil price deregulation, but we are going to continue to pay for past follies. A case in point is the Direct Tax Code (DTC) that was recently cleared by the Union cabinet. Originally touted as a big deal for taxpayers, it has been reduced to a minor concession, thanks to past overspending.

The original idea behind the DTC was to move to a tax system that was transparent and easy to administer, but the UPA cannot afford it anymore. A mountain of work has, thus, yielded a mouse. After producing two draft codes for public discussion, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has more or less opted for incrementalism rather than radical change.

The initial proposal was simple enough: give taxpayers a large dose of tax relief, lump all exemptions into one package, and make the tax system less complicated. If Mukherjee had stuck to that goal, taxpayers would have surrendered small reliefs here and there and gained big on tax slabs and choice of tax-free investment avenues. But now Mukherjee’s DTC is a pale shadow of its former self.

Under the original draft proposal, taxpayers in the higher brackets would have saved more, as the idea was that the lowest rate of 10% would cover incomes upto Rs10 lakh. The middle rate of 20% would apply to incomes in the Rs10-25 lakh bracket, and the top rate of 30% to incomes above Rs25 lakh. As things stand now, the tax-free bracket merely moves up from Rs1.6 lakh to Rs2 lakh.

The 10%, 20% and 30% brackets also shrink to Rs 2-5lakh, Rs5-10-lakh and Rs10 lakh plus.

This is incrementalism at its worst, and Pranab-da has missed a golden opportunity to empower taxpayers. Having robbed them in the past, he cannot play Robin Hood now.

The answer he got was frightening. Between 2004-05 and 2009-10, the three most profitable oil and gas companies (ONGC, GAIL and Oil India) were summarily asked to hand over Rs1,12,592 crore to three loss-making oil marketing companies.
That’s nearly three times the current year’s central outlay for NREGA, the flagship social security scheme of the UPA. But even Rs1,12,592 crore wasn’t enough to staunch the bleeding of Indian Oil, BPCL and HPCL. Over and above the robbery of three profit-making oil companies, the government had to raid the taxpayer’s chest for another Rs1,68,203 crore over 2005-10 (paid through oil bonds) to ensure the marketing companies stayed afloat.
Now, let’s restate the full extent of the skullduggery. To ensure that oil prices did not rock its electoral boat, it transferred Rs1,12,592 crore from publicly-listed profit-makers to the loss-makers, but there’s a procedural complication here.
The government itself owns majority stakes in these profit-makers, so the real extent of money transferred from private investors is equal only to the level of public shareholding in these companies.
Since the public shareholding is 25.86% in ONGC, 21.57% in Oil India and 42.18% in GAIL, private investors were cheated of Rs29,991 crore in the process. That’s their share of profits in ONGC, Oil India and GAIL that got transferred to the marketing companies. Investors in these three companies can approach Sebi and ask it to take action against the promoter (the government) for corporate misgovernance and misappropriation of shareholders funds.
To be sure, this is not a point that has not been made before. What we are now clear about is the exact extent of the government’s bad politico-economic decisions that investors and taxpayers finally ended up paying for.
Misgovernance and fraud is built into the public sector primarily because politicians use public assets for private ends, including financing their own re-election.
Let’s also remember, the Rs2,80,795 crore scandal is only the tip of the iceberg. If we add up the subsidies handed over to fertiliser companies, farmers and the Food Corporation of India (a substantial part of the grain mountain that is now being fed to rats), the losses will be truly stupendous.
The best thing the UPA did recently was thus to move towards oil price deregulation, but we are going to continue to pay for past follies. A case in point is the Direct Tax Code (DTC) that was recently cleared by the Union cabinet. Originally touted as a big deal for taxpayers, it has been reduced to a minor concession, thanks to past overspending.
The original idea behind the DTC was to move to a tax system that was transparent and easy to administer, but the UPA cannot afford it anymore. A mountain of work has, thus, yielded a mouse. After producing two draft codes for public discussion, finance minister Pranab Mukherjee has more or less opted for incrementalism rather than radical change.
The initial proposal was simple enough: give taxpayers a large dose of tax relief, lump all exemptions into one package, and make the tax system less complicated. If Mukherjee had stuck to that goal, taxpayers would have surrendered small reliefs here and there and gained big on tax slabs and choice of tax-free investment avenues. But now Mukherjee’s DTC is a pale shadow of its former self.
Under the original draft proposal, taxpayers in the higher brackets would have saved more, as the idea was that the lowest rate of 10% would cover incomes upto Rs10 lakh. The middle rate of 20% would apply to incomes in the Rs10-25 lakh bracket, and the top rate of 30% to incomes above Rs25 lakh. As things stand now, the tax-free bracket merely moves up from Rs1.6 lakh to Rs2 lakh.
The 10%, 20% and 30% brackets also shrink to Rs 2-5lakh, Rs5-10-lakh and Rs10 lakh plus. This is incrementalism at its worst, and Pranab-da has missed a golden opportunity to empower taxpayers. Having robbed them in the past, he cannot play Robin Hood now.

In what is clearly an indictment of PV Narasimha Rao, one of India’s greatest Prime Ministers, Congress MP Rahul Gandhi declared a couple of weeks ago that the Babri Masjid would have been saved if a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family had been in active politics at that time. Though Mr Gandhi has belatedly tried to make some amends, this incident has once again brought to the fore the feudal mindset of members of the Nehru-Gandhi family, their insecurities (which prevent them from acknowledging the contribution of leaders outside their family) and their persistent efforts to distort historical truths.

Since Mr Gandhi has sought to give us a glimpse of what would have been if a member of his family had been at the helm in December 1992, here is a summary of this family’s track record when it did hold the political reins. Let us begin at the beginning. Acting on the advice of Lord Mountbatten, the first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, gave Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel the task of integrating all the 565 princely states in the Indian Union. Even as Sardar Patel set about his task, Nehru, in a display of pettiness typical of this family, moved “Kashmir Affairs” from the Department of States to the Ministry of External Affairs, which was under his charge. Patel executed his responsibility in a clinical and ruthless manner and successfully completed the gigantic task of stitching together 564 princely states into the Indian Union. Nehru took on the responsibility of integrating one princely state (Jammu & Kashmir) and we all know the consequence – this has remained India’s most problematic State for the last 60 years.

But Nehru’s Kashmir blunders did not end here. In October 1947, Pakistan sent in thousands of heavily armed tribesmen into Jammu & Kashmir in a bid to capture it by force. After Maharaja Hari Singh signed the Instrument of Accession, the Indian Army marched in and began pushing back the intruders who had captured Baramulla and cut off power supply to Srinagar. Even as our gallant soldiers were driving out the intruders, Nehru cried halt to the Army operation and, much against the advice of Sardar Patel, took the fateful decision to lodge a complaint against Pakistan before the United Nations Security Council on January 1, 1948.

With this single act, Nehru demoralised the Army (which wanted just a few more days to throw out the intruders), allowed Pakistan to retain 30,000 square miles of illegally occupied territory in Jammu & Kashmir and internationalised the Kashmir issue. So, while Nehru made a mess of the Kashmir issue, Patel coaxed, cajoled or bamboozled recalcitrant princes like the Nizam of Hyderabad and a couple of pro-Pakistan princes on the Gujarat coast to fall in line and accede their territories to India. But for Patel’s firmness, we would have lost Hyderabad and the coastal areas of Gujarat to Pakistan in1948 itself and Hyderabad, in the words of the Sardar, would have become an “undigested lump” in India’s belly.

Let us now examine the report card of another member of this family – Mrs Indira Gandhi.

In 1975, Mrs Gandhi imposed an internal Emergency and turned a vibrant democracy into a dictatorship. Her Government wrecked the Constitution through a series of horrendous amendments, jailed most of her political opponents under draconian laws, ordered forcible sterilisation of men in the reproductive age group and sent bulldozers to drive out the poor from the cities. All this would never have happened if a non-Nehru-Gandhi had been the Prime Minister.

Thereafter, between 1980 and 1984, Mrs Gandhi’s Government offered tacit support to Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale just to spite the Akalis and allowed him to store deadly weapons in the Golden Temple. When things went out of control, she ordered the Army to march into the shrine, causing huge loss of human life and hurting the pride of the Sikhs. Thereafter, Mrs Gandhi was assassinated by her Sikh bodyguards leading to a pogrom in which more than 3,000 Sikhs were lynched in Delhi and other parts of northern India at the behest of Congress leaders. None of this would have happened if a non-Nehru Gandhi had been the Prime Minister between 1980 and 1984.

Coming to the era of Rajiv Gandhi, his approach to the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) eerily resembled the Sikh militancy story. This too ended in the tragic deaths of hundreds of brave, young soldiers and the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. All this would never have happened if a non-Nehru-Gandhi had been Prime Minister between 1984 and 1989.

There are several other decisions taken by members of this family, which have resulted in much social, economic and political strife. For example, Rajiv Gandhi succumbed to pressure from the Muslim clergy and amended the law to deny maintenance to divorced Muslim women after the Shah Bano case. Thereafter he felt compelled to appease Hindu sentiment and so had the Ram Temple in Ayodhya unlocked and a ‘shilanyas’ performed. Yet, Mr Rahul Gandhi showers abuse on Narasimha Rao and expects us to believe that the family that blessed the ‘shilanyas’ would have saved the masjid! The list is endless.

However, since Mr Gandhi has sought to run down Narasimha Rao, we need to ask ourselves whether members of this family have ever had the civility to acknowledge the contribution of national leaders from outside this family, be it Sardar Patel, BR Ambedkar or Narasimha Rao. When Narasimha Rao became Prime Minister we had mortgaged gold to the Bank of England because we had run out of foreign exchange. By the time he completed his five-year term, he had laid the foundation for India’s emergence as an economic superpower. I shudder to think what would have been India’s fate if instead of the cerebral Narasimha Rao, a Nehru-Gandhi had been the Prime Minister between 1991 and 1996!

Narasimha Rao, along with Mr Manmohan Singh, not only gave India hope but also unlocked the creative genius of Indians, which had been bottled up during the era of the Nehru-Gandhis. The Nehru-Gandhis will never acknowledge this, but we do not have to be so ungrateful. Now that Mr Rahul Gandhi has sought to besmirch the image of Narasimha Rao, we must demand the appointment of a Truth Commission to document the commissions and omissions of every Prime Minister so that our post-independence history, which is currently corrupted by the mythology promoted by the Nehru-Gandhis, becomes a more honest narrative.

Robert Vadra is an Indian businessman notable as the husband of Priyanka Gandhi and a member of the Nehru-Gandhi family by marriage. He was born to Rajinder and Maureen Wadhera on 18 April 1969. Rajinder Vadra hails from Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh and Maureen was of Scottish origin (maiden name: McDonagh).^[1]

Robert may have met Priyanka Gandhi, the daughter of Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi at the house of common expatriate friend Ottavio Quattrocchi.^[2] Subsequently he married Priyanka Gandhi on 18 February 1997. They have two children.

He had one brother Richard Vadra who was found dead in September 2003 at his Vasant Vihar residence, and his sister Michelle died in a car accident in 2001. His father Rajinder Vadra committed suicide on 2 April 2009 under suspicious circumstances, but the story was not published widely by the Indian media. Rajinder Vadra in an interview was highly critical of his son Robert and said that after the wedding with Priyanka Gandhi, he disowned his son.

HC issues notice to Rahul Gandhi for girl's illegal detention

LUCKNOW: The Lucknow Bench of Allahabad High Court today issued notice to AICC general secretary Rahul Gandhi on a petition alleging that a girl and her parents were illegally detained by him since 2007.

Justice Shri Narayan Shukla passed the order, seeking Gandhi's reply, on a habeas corpus petition filed by Kishore Samrite, a former Samajwadi Party MLA from Madhya Pradesh, on behalf of Sukanya Devi, her father Balram Singh and mother Sumitra Devi.

The petition alleged that the petitioners -- Sukanya Devi and her parents -- were in illegal detention of Rahul Gandhi since January 4, 2007.

It has sought direction to command the Congress leader to produce the girl and her parents before the court and set them at liberty.

New Delhi, Feb 4 (IANS) Even as Congress MP Rahul Gandhi has filed a legal suit against a US-based website over what is said to be a scurrilous campaign against him, leaders of the ruling party are refusing to comment on the issue.

"It's too hot an issue to comment upon," said a senior Congress leader when asked about a cyber campaign against party president Sonia Gandhi's son ahead of crucial Uttar Pradesh polls, where Rahul is expected to be the party's star campaigner.

Rahul's lawyer Abhishek Singhvi has sent a legal notice to two people - Rohit Vyassman and E Z Bode who are apparently behind the blog that makes unsubstantiated and disparaging charges against the Amethi MP and his activities in his constituency.

"It is high time that civil society took note of this dirty campaign," Singhvi said.

Congress leaders admit that such personal campaigns against Rahul had increased ever since media reports suggested that he would lead the Congress campaign in Uttar Pradesh.

"It shows the desperation in our opposition camp," said a leader, who does not want to be identified.

Although the news item has been on the US-based website - Hinduunity.org, which claims to be the official website of the Bajrang Dal - for sometime, the legal notice was sent only early this week. Singhvi said it took a week's investigation to come across the names supposed to be behind the blog.

Incidentally, several websites - mostly foreign - have picked up the news item. Sources said the Gandhi family was furious at a "perverted and nasty" campaign against the 36-year-old bachelor MP.

Although the campaign and the blogs had been brought to the notice of many senior Congress leaders, they were reluctant to respond to it earlier.

"It is true that we came to know about it. But we did not want to take up the issue. You do not what goes wrong in the Congress party, especially when the issue is about the Gandhi family," admitted a party leader who requested that he be not identified.

Added another: "No sensible Congress leader would make a comment nor would they take a pro-active role to counter it. One never knows when the issue could boomerang."

Earlier, the US magazine Newsweek had to apologise after it claimed that Rahul Gandhi was not even a graduate and that he had never held a steady job in a multinational company as he claimed. Singhvi had sent a legal notice to the magazine challenging the report.

30 January 2007: At the Gandhi conference, Sonia Gandhi (no relation) was handsomely feted. On one side, she showed hard pragmatism, as the de facto leader of the UPA government. While condemning nuclear weapons, and arguing for universal disarmament (even Kissinger and George Shultz do now), she accepted the compulsion of India's own deterrence. On the other side though, she seemed to be carried away by the NAMby-pamby, Third Worldism of the likes of Kenneth Kaunda. Mrs Gandhi should be more careful.

Sonia Gandhi occupies a unique place in Indian democracy. Her closest equivalent in the US would be the Clintons, though they don't own the Democratic Party. Her total leadership of the Congress Party and her dominance of the government may be more readily found in dictatorships. But since she and the Congress party operate in a rumbustious democracy like India's, her position is at once strange and all the more powerful. Since she is India's most powerful person – yes, more powerful than prime minister Manmohan Singh – she gets courted as she did at the Satyagraha conference.

But that is only part of the reason. The principle reason is India's growing weight. After the US, Russia and China, India is perhaps the only state making huge geo-political waves. It is not the richer Nato states which are drawing attention. Britain and France have slipped in the points' table, although they remain UN veto powers and NPT nuclear weapons' states. Nor is Germany in the reckoning, despite a powerhouse economy. And Japan, which in the wake of the North Korean nuclear test was seriously reconsidering its own weaponization options, has returned to its old passive pacifism. Remains India, where most eyes are turned.

Since Sonia Gandhi, in effect, leads this India, she was the centre of attraction at the Gandhi conference. But because she has this leadership role, she cannot afford to make miscalculations. She cannot, for example, be seen siding with or opposing the United States. She has a force multiplier effect on the party and government. Her most innocuous gestures may be misconstrued by the party, and a spokesperson may wang off to the acute embarrassment and distress of the government. Equally, the government may misread her, and push off on a policy tangent which could have disastrous consequences.

Currently, a fine balance has been established. Since this piece deals exclusively with strategic policy, we will restrict the field of our comment. Because of Natwar Singh's calamitous stewardship of the foreign ministry, the PMO left him with day-to-day matters and assumed control of sensitive relations and policy-making. That arrangement has not discontinued with Pranab Mukherjee coming in Natwar's place after a long hiatus. But it is also true that Pranab Mukherjee is increasingly becoming his own – and a very levelheaded – foreign minister. A fine balance has been struck in foreign policy-making and in the conduct of external relations.

Obviously, this process took a while to mature. But this process could not have accomplished results without Sonia's indulgence. So, in a sense, Sonia is responsible for preserving this fine balance. This means two things. This separation of powers between the PMO and foreign office on external policy-making and relations is not only necessary but also mandated by the long existence of the establishment and institution of the foreign office. Two, anything Sonia says or does in the public realm could upset this fine balance, and indeed distress India's strategic progress. Sonia Gandhi should ask herself, "Why am I getting this homage?" Objectivity will humble her, and force stillness in her actions. This is India's most important moment.

Blocs and alliances were perhaps de rigueur for the Cold War and the immediate post-Cold War era. But post-post Cold War times require emerging great powers like India to plot their way ahead in a global version of the Big Brother show. There is no room at the top. Room has to be made. For its own reasons, the United States is ready and willing to make us strategic partners. You definitely try to read the other's mind. You ensure no traps are sprung. You take calculated risks. But you don't – absolutely not – abuse the extended hand of friendship.

The likes of Kenneth Kaunda have nothing to lose. Certainly, they are icons of an era and for a generation of Indians who fought survival struggles in Africa in the closing stages of de-colonization and after. But many to most of those Indians have relocated and done brilliantly in the West. And that era ended long before movements like NAM commenced tottering. If India has taken a considered decision to keep away from the current rogue leadership of NAM, surely Mrs Gandhi should be polite and distant from those voices that may upset – and cause to upset – our building strategic relations with the United States. She owes that to the government she leads for all purposes.

Her silence is required on all foreign relations. The high-powered Vladimir Putin visit (Commentary, "Anatomy of a visit," 29 January 2007) tells that the impression of a pro-US tilt is being corrected. There is no urgent necessity for Sonia Gandhi to grandstand on our external ties, therefore. The government is fully equipped to handle that. If she wants an international image for herself, it should not come at the cost of her government and not at India's cost. Was she carried away by Kenneth Kaunda's speech against US wars? Who wouldn't? Women hate wars, because they are war's worst victims. Sonia Gandhi has also suffered terrible personal losses.

And yet, given her special place in the power structure, she cannot reveal of herself in a way to damage foreign relations and our strategic interests. Over today and throughout the week, the government may have to damage control. India is being seriously watched. India-watchers can spin anything from the Gandhi conference. While the damage will be controlled, a spin of absence of foreign policy consensus within the government would cause long-term damage. Our best interests would begin hedging. Our adversaries would get unexpected new openings to create misunderstandings.

HinduUnity message board banned by ezBoard

ezBoard company which hosted HinduUnity.org message board has banned the forum permanently . HinduUuity message board accused Mr.Rahul Gandhi of raping a girl in Amethi last december . To this Rahul Gandhi lawyer has sent a notice to ezBoard last friday . EzBoard say "(hinduunity) has been locked down in accordance with ezboard's Terms of Use . Reason: Violations of ezboard's Term's of Use."

Though the allegations are not verified by anyone , however Hinduunity was challenged by many to come up with evidence . A source told that they were in in the process of airing interviews of few residents of Amethi tomorrow . The thread received over 80,000 hits in less than a month compared to other which covers events in "Balochistan " . "Balochistan thread received just over 40,000 hits over a year but it is so amazing that Rahul Gandhi's thread received twice the number of hits in few days " said a watcher .

Members and leaders are upset over lock down as an administrator told us by email . They said " a new message board will be launched soon , and tomorrow we are releasing the video to the public" .

3. That this publication exceeds and excels even the worst standards of scurrilous, perverted and gutter writing and is obviously the emanation of diseased minds, acting at the behest of maliciously motivated elements who cannot digest my client's popularity and standing in India and globally.

4. That the contents of this publication are so incredible and so outrageous that normally any response would amount to dignifying and recognising the outpourings of unhinged minds and personalities. However, in view of my client's stature as a public figure and to obviate any notions by you that you can get away with such criminal and uncivilised behaviour, we are sending you this legal notice.
5. We wish to categorically, specifically and unequivocally assert that each and every allegation, insinuation, innuendo and accusation in your publication is totally false, untrue and baseless. Non denial of each sentence of your wild publication specifically should not be treated as implied acceptance or admittance of any part of your falsehoods.

6. By this publication, you have irreversibly damaged the high, fair and established reputation and standing of my client in the estimation of reasonable members of society. You have committed the civil wrong of defamation, the crime of defamation, several malicious torts and have illegally published the name and identity of someone called Sukanya, thereby defaming others as well.

7. My client intends to prosecute you and all your associates, abettors and coconspirators for all civil and criminal wrongs and illegalities committed by you. This is not an exhaustive itemisation of all actions which my client intends to take against you and others and my client reserves the right to add to, vary or modify all such grounds and reasons as he deems fit and proper. I put you on notice that my client shall strain every sinew and every resource to punish you with exemplary punishment, both criminal and civil and shall pursue you relentlessly for your misdemeanours and also try to make an example out of you to deter such wild and irresponsible writing and behaviours in the future by anyone else.

8. Without prejudice to the abovementioned, my client may (without any commitment or guarantee) reconsider the options if you publish a comprehensive, unconditional and all encompassing apology (which has to be vetted by us prior to such publication and is entirely subject to our correction as to scope, language and content) and also dismantle and dissolve not only this but all other similar sites controlled or motivated or emanating from you and/or your associates or coconspirators with immediate effect.

As you all know HinduUnity.org has charged Mr.Rahul Gandhi of raping a girl by name Ms.Sukanya Devi last year December 3rd in Amethi guesthouse along with his foreign friends . To this Rahul has sent a legal notice to Hinduunity.org last week . IntelliBriefs learned from a source in Amethi that a senior citizen who helped the alleged rape Victim Ms.Sukanya was beaten by some goons and his life is under threat . Elder in his 70's is said to have taken the victim to delhi and tried to arrange press conferences and register with Human Rights commission and National commission for women . "He was severely beaten and his family was threatened with dire consequences" , the source said ,and was not allowed to leave the town . We will release the name of the person at appropriate time after taking consent of the persons family . Media focused much of its efforts on Rahul Gandhi's notice to hinduunity.org website , at the same time they should have cross check the allegations made by the website by sending its journalists to Amethi . Though the girl in question Ms.Sukanya has not come out publicly , and is reportedly hiding out of fear as the website claims . The time has come to file a petition in court to produce the girl in question, as it is a serious allegation against Nehru dynasty .

"It's too hot an issue to comment upon," said a senior Congress leader when asked about a cyber campaign against party president Sonia Gandhi's son ahead of crucial Uttar Pradesh polls, where Rahul is expected to be the party's star campaign ."It is true that we came to know about it. But we did not want to take up the issue. This CD is which is under private circulation ,as per our information ,produced by a journalist . A person who is close to power circles in Delhi told in a private email after watching that "I just went through the video CD (DVD) delivered to me containing interviews with a few Amethi residents. All of them made the same charge: Sukanya, the daughter of the Congress worker Balram Singh and and Sumitra Devi was raped by Rahul Gandhi and his friends the night of December 3. None of them wanted their faces to be shown. The climate of fear is palpable. Several of them didn't want their names, but two identified themselves. "

Nehru-Gandhi Family Secrets : See The Real Nehru (The First PM Of India)

INTERESTING HISTORY!

At the very beginning of his book, "The Nehru Dynasty", astrologer K.N.Rao
mentions the names of Jawaharlal's father and grandfather.
Jawahar Lal's father was believed to be Motilal and Motilal's father was one
Gangadhar Nehru.
And we all know that Jawaharlal's only daughter was Indira Priyadarshini Nehru;
Kamala Nehru was her mother, who died in Switzerland of tuberculosis.

She was totally against Indira's proposed marriage with Feroze.

Why? No one tells us that!

Now, who is this Feroze?

We are told by many that he was the son of the family grocer.
The grocer supplied wines,etc. to Anand Bhavan (previously known as Ishrat
Manzil)

What was the family grocer's name?

One frequently hears that Rajiv Gandhi's grandfather was Pandit Nehru.
But then we all know that everyone has two grandfathers, the paternal and the
maternal grandfathers.
In fact, the paternal grandfather is deemed to be the more important grandfather in
most societies.

Why is it then, no where, we find Rajiv Gandhi's paternal grandfather's name?
It appears that the reason is simply this. Rajiv Gandhi's paternal grandfather
was a Muslim gentleman from the Junagadh area of Gujarat.

This Muslim grocer by the name of Nawab Khan, had married a Parsi

woman after converting her to Islam.

This is the source where from the myth of Rajiv being a Parsi was derived.Rajiv's father Feroze, was Feroze Khan before he married Indira, against Kamala Nehru's wishes.

Feroze's mother's family name was Ghandy, often associated with Parsis

and this was changed to Gandhi,sometime before his wedding with Indira, by an

affidavit.

The fact of the matter isthat (and this fact can be found in many writings)

Indira was very lonely. Chased out of the Shantiniketan University by Guru Dev
Rabindranath himself for misdemeanor, the lonely girl was all by herself,
while father Jawahar was busy with politics, pretty women and illicit sex;
the mother was in hospital.
Feroze Khan, the grocer's son was then in England and he was quite
sympathetic to Indira and soon enough she changed her religion, became a
Muslim woman and married Feroze Khan in a London mosque.

Nehru was not happy; Kamala was dead already or dying. The news of this

marriage eventually reached Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi (better known as

Mahatma Gandhi).

Gandhi urgently called Nehru and practically ordered him to ask the young man
to change his name from Khan to Gandhi. It had nothing to do with change of
religion, from Islam to Hinduism for instance.
It was just a case of a change of name by an affidavit.And so Feroze Khan
became Feroze Gandhi.

The surprising thing is that the apostle of truth, the old man soon to be declared

India's Mahatma and the 'Father of the Nation' didn't mention this game of his in

the famous book, 'My Experiments with Truth'.Why?

When they returned to India, amock 'Vedic marriage' was instituted for public
consumption.
On this subject,writes M.O. Mathai (a longtime Private Secretary of Nehru) in his
renowned (but now suppressed by the GOI! ) 'Reminiscences of the Nehru Age'
on page94, second paragraph: "For some inexplicable reason, Nehru allowed

the marriage to be performed according to Vedic rites in 1942.An inter-religious
and inter-caste marriage under Vedic rites at that time was not valid in law. To
be legal, it had to be a civil marriage."

It's a known fact that after Rajiv's birth Indira and Feroze lived separately,but

they were not divorced.

Feroze used to harass Nehru frequently for money and also interfere in Nehru's
political activities. Nehru got fed up and left instructions not to allow him into the
Prime Minister's residence Trimurthi Bhavan.
Mathai writes that the death of Feroze came as a relief to Nehru and Indira. The
death of Feroze in 1960 before he could consolidate his own political forces, is
itself a mystery. Feroze had even planned to remarry.

Those who try to keep tabs on our leaders in spite of all the suppressions and
deliberate misinformation, are aware of the fact that the second son of Indira (or
Mrs.Feroze Khan) known as Sanjay Gandhi was not the son of Feroze.
He was the son of another Muslim gentleman, Mohammad Yunus.

Here, in passing, we might mention that the second son was originally named

Sanjiv. It rhymed with Rajiv, the elder brother's name.

It was changed to Sanjay when he was arrested by the British police in England
and his passport impounded, for having stolen a car.
Krishna Menon was then India's High Commissioner in London. He offered to
issue another passport to the felon who changed his name to Sanjay.

Incidentally, Sanjay's marriage with the Sikh girlMenaka (now they call her

Maneka for Indira Gandhi found the name of mythological Lord Indra's Court

dancer rather offensive !!)took place quite surprisingly in Mohammad Yunus's

house in New Delhi.

And the marriage with Menaka who was a model (She had model for Bombay

Dyeing wearing just a towel) was not so ordinary either.

Sanjay was notorious in getting unwed young women pregnant. Menaka too was

rendered pregnant by Sanjay.

It was then that her father,Colonel Anand, threatened Sanjay with dire
consequences if he did not marry her daughter. And that did the trick.
Sanjay married Menaka. It was widely reported in Delhi at the time that
Mohammad Yunus was unhappy at the marriage of Sanjay with Menaka.
Apparently he had wanted to get him married with a Muslim girl of his choice.

It was Mohammad Yunus who cried the most when Sanjay died in the plane

accident.

In Yunus's book, 'Persons, Passions & Politics' one discovers that baby
Sanjay had been circumcised following Islamic custom, although the
reason stated was phimosis.

It was always believed that Sanjay used to blackmail Indira Gandhi and

due to this she used to turn a blind eye when Sanjay Gandhi started to

run the country as though it were his personal freedom.

Was he black mailing her with the secret of who his real father was?

When the news of Sanjay's death reached Indira Gandhi, the first thingshe wanted to know was about the bunch of keys which Sanjay had withhim.

Nehru was no less a player in producing bastards.

At least one case is very graphically described by M.O. Mathai in his

"Reminiscences of the NehruAge", page 206.

Mathai writes:

"In the autumn of 1948 a young woman from Benares arrived in New
Delhi as a sanyasini named Shraddha Mata (an assumed and not a real
name). She was a Sanskrit scholar well versed in the ancient Indian
scriptures and mythology.People, including MPs, thronged to her to hear
her discourses. One day S.D. Upadhyaya, Nehru's old employee, brought
a letter in Hindi from Shraddha Mata. Nehru gave her an interview in the
PM's house. As she departed, I noticed (Mathai is speaking here) that
she was young, shapely and beautiful.Meetings of Nehru with her
became rather frequent, mostly after he finished his work at night. During
one of Nehru's visits to Lucknow, Shraddha Mata turned up there and
Upadhyaya brought a letter from her as usual. Nehru sent her the reply
and she visited Nehru at midnight...“

Suddenly Shraddha Mata disappeared.

In November 1949 a convent in Bangalore sent a decent looking person to
Delhi with a bundle of letters. He said that a young woman from northern
India arrived at the convent a few months ago and gave birth to a baby

parties not because she was a former model or an animal lover, but for her

Saying that an Italian (or any foreigner) should not lead India will amount to

narrow mindedness, but if Sania Maino (now Sonia) had served India like, say,

Mother Teresa or Annie Besant, i.e. in anyway on her own rights, then all

Miserable Conditions of HINDU Temples In Pakistan

Hindus in Pakistan are watching helplessly as ancient temples turn into ruins due to the apathy of authorities....

Despite being the second largest ethnic majority in the country, Hindus in Pakistan have been unable to acquire possession of their religious places, agricultural land and other commercial areas. Due to lack of government action, most sacred sites for Hindus are in a dilapidated condition; the rest have been converted into schools, hotels or business centres.

According to the National Commission for Inter-Religious Dialogue and Ecumenism, Pakistan is home to 3.9 million (39 lakh) Hindus. Most members of the minority community belong to impoverished agricultural families.

A report of the Evacuee Trust Property Board reveals that 135,000 acres of land belonging to Hindu farmers is under the control of ETBP, of which 125,000 acres is fertile and suitable for cultivation.

A number of sacred sites, commercial spaces and other properties are also in the possession of ETBP. Ironically, to control Hindu assets and properties, ETPB employs extensive machinery comprising mostly of Muslim workers. Local Hindus have demanded that the ETPB should give them some jobs, as it is reluctant to hand over the possession of their assets.

"The Hindus are left behind in every walk of life. They don't have possession of their sacred places and other properties. If Hindus were given the possession of their assets, their misery could be alleviated," Haroon Sayab Diyal, chairman of the Pakistan Hindu Rights Movement

Haroon Diyal says, "Handing over these properties to the original heirs would also enable the Hindu minority population to stand on its feet. Our youngsters will be able to avail the various educational opportunities. After receiving proper qualifications, they can function as citizens of Pakistan -- no one would then have to rely on special quotas for jobs."

Pakistani Hindus complain that their sacred sites are misused by illegal possessors. In Dera Ismail Khan's Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, a group has illegally acquired the 700-year-old Kali Bari Mandir and is now using it as a hotel.

According to local Hindus, the occupants of the temple pay only Pakistani Rs 1,600 to the government and earn thousands of rupees per day from the hotel.

Vijay Kumar, a Hindu activist, says, "Due to the hotel's activities, the temple is used in an unholy way. Though a number of sacred idols are missing from the temple, this historically important site could attract Hindu pilgrims from around the globe."

Though the Hindu community has taken up this issue a number of times with the government, no action has been taken so far. "In April 2009, after our request to the then governor of KPK Owais Ghani, an inquiry was ordered in the case of the disputed Kali Bari Mandir, but no action was taken about it," says Diyal.

The issue of Kali Bari is not an isolated example. In Islamabad, Hindus have no access to a temple situated at Saidpur model village.

Ahmedabad (Agencies): India’s leading dairy brand Amul have become the official sponsors of the Netherlands cricket team for the ICC Cricket World Cup starting February 19.

The Royal Netherlands Cricket Board (RNCB) signed the sponsorship deal with Amul yesterday.
Logo of Amul Butter, a Gujrat based giant will appear on the sleeve of saffron jersrys of players as well as on the training kits throughout the World Cup.

"We were looking to associate with the game of cricket for long....World cup came as a good opportunity and it clicked," GCMMF Managing Director R S Sodhi said.

"We are getting associated with the Cricket World Cup for the first time and Amul welcomes the Netherlands team to Indian sub-continent," he said. However, he did not divulge the amount of money involved in the sponsorship deal.
Netherlands will play their first match against England on February 22 in Nagpur.

"I am delighted we have been able to bring Amul on board for the World Cup and will be showcasing the brand over the competition," RNCB Chief Executive Richard Cox said in a statement.

"It is also heartening to note that the level of their investment will extend not just to supporting the team but also allow us to invest in some key areas of the board, most notably our development programmes beyond the World Cup," Cox said.

"The board has attracted over half a dozen new financial partners in last 12 months," he added.

Carleton University has established partnerships with two Indian universities for the benefit of furthering academic development and research.
Roseann O'Reilly Runte, president, Carleton University, who is in India , signed a memorandum of understanding on renewable energy and aerospace engineering with the University of Petroleum and Energy Studies, Delhi , and another on business management with the Jindal Global University, Haryana.

"These agreements target specific areas of strength for the partner institutions and provide a framework for exchanges of faculty and students for joint research projects, academic exchanges and collaborative programmes," her office said in a statement from Ottawa.

Before leaving for Delhi, Runte had told India Abroad that she would address several forums in India, including students at the Birla Institute of Technology and Science-Pilani, Rajasthan and their Hyderabad campus, in which she would outline the need for interdisciplinary thinking and an international team of researchers, as well as the role of post-secondary education in addressing the challenges and opportunities presented by an increasingly global world.
Meanwhile, back home, Carleton University's newly created Canada-India Center is gearing up for two international summits. The first, the Canada-India Innovation Summit, in association with the International Science and Technology Partnerships Canada, will take place May 9 to 13 to discuss innovation strategies in key sectors of interest for Canada and India. Twitter ban on players during World Cup matches

In a bid to ensure a corruption-free World Cup following the spot-fixing scandal, the International Cricket Council has banned players and team officials from tweeting during matches.

The decision, an initiative of ICC's Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, was intended to restrain players and officials from any possible approach by people with links to illegal betting during World Cup matches.

The move from the ICC came in response to Australian team manager Steve Bernard's tweets which attracted more than 1,100 followers to his @stevebernard37 account in the past six months, including during Ashes and the subsequent ODI series, according to a report in Sydney Morning Herald.

The long-time manager was told soon after arriving in Bangalore with the team last week that he, as well as any other player or team official at the World Cup, had been banned from tweeting during matches.

"When it comes to issues of corruption we prefer to err on the side of caution. We don't want to spoil anyone's fun but there is a chance that sensitive information could be passed on during matches in this way, even inadvertently, and we just feel that team managers' phones should be kept for operational purposes only.

"This recommendation is not confined to the Australia team manager but all teams in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2011 and is certainly not a reaction to anything the Australia team manager has said or done in the past. It's merely a precaution and is not something we are overly worried about at this stage," ICC spokesman James Fitzgerald was quoted as saying by the newspaper.

Players and officials will still, however, be permitted to tweet when matches are not occurring.

Cricket Australia chief spokesman Peter Young believed that the in-game ban had been imposed by the ICC due to the heightened sensitivity about corruption in cricket.

"(Bernard) is very judicious about what he does and doesn't say but while he's getting it right there needs to be one rule for all," Young said.

"It is, as I understand, a perception issue. They don't want players or team management able to be communicating to the outside world because of the concern the information might be misused by the illegal betting industry."

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence definitely could have placed noted Pakistan singer, Rahat Fateh Ali Khan, under arrest, but decided to release him after enormous diplomatic pressure.

Khan, instead, had his passport confiscated and was asked not to leave the country before the probe was over.

A senior DRI official, under condition of anonymity, toldrediff.com that there was severe diplomatic pressure for the singer's release.

In the end, DRI sleuths managed to question Khan for about 28 hours before he had to be released.

A two-member team from the Pakistan High Commission was constantly in touch with the DRI over proceedings. They, however, were not given access to the singer during his detention period.

The DRI asked Khan to reappear before them on February 17 -- a deadline DRI has set for themselves to complete the probe against the singer.

"He has been asked to appear again for questioning on February 17 and will remain in the country until investigations are complete. We have not registered any case against him yet. If our probe finds irregularities, we will invoke relevant sections of the Customs Act and Foreign Exchange Management Act," R K Sharma, additional director-general of DRI, said.

Another DRI officer said that the biggest problem they faced was placing the singer under arrest, as he was a foreigner.

"If in his place, had an Indian been detected carrying such a large amount of foreign currency, he could have been placed under arrest immediately. We had to detain Khan without formally slapping charges against him because he is a foreigner. In addition, he is an international artist and had been in the country for about 10 days, performing at various concerts, which would have accounted for the money," the officer said.

According to the officer, the Sufi singer, who is a hit on both sides of the border, told them that he only took payments in cash.

"During his questioning, he kept telling us that he dealt with producers of different concerts only in cash. His event manager, Chitresh Srivastava, took cash from producers of the concerts from the different event management companies, which he then gave to Khan," the officer said.

"He also kept saying he had to take the payments in cash since he did not have a bank account in India. When asked, he admitted to carrying undeclared foreign currency in earlier instances as well without being detected. His explanation was that he was not aware of the laws," the officer said.

The officer said that they have contacted different event management companies based in Mumbai, Delhi, Ahmedabad, Rajkot and Jaipur to get details of his performances and the amount of money that was exchanged.

They will then compare the money that was found in his possession to the amount declared by the event management companies for discrepancies.

The officer said that they have raided the Mumbai-based office of the event management company, which takes care of Khan's concerts in India

Khan, the winner of this year's Filmfare award for best male playback singer, had performed last in suburbs of Jaipur at a private wedding four days ago. Prior to that he has performed in six other locations over a period of ten days as a part of Indo-Pak peace initiative, 'Aman Ki Asha'.

Acting on a tip-off, a team of DRI officials had detained Khan when he was clearing customs on Sunday evening to take an Emirates flight to Lahore via Dubai. They found US $24,000 in Khan's hand baggage and $25,000 each on two of his troupe members.

Another $50,000 was recovered from his checked in luggage. Legally, Khan is allowed to carry US $10,000 -- in cash, bank drafts and traveller's cheques without declaring. Anything above this has to be declared and Khan or his troupe members had not.
