Bob Yates Crosses the Finish Line at John O’Groats After 1,030-Mile UK Run

On Friday, July 4, Bob Yates completed his extraordinary 1,030-mile journey from Land’s End to John O’Groats, marking the end of a five-week ultra-endurance challenge to celebrate his 60th birthday. He was welcomed at the finish line with a dram of whisky and heartfelt applause from supporters — a fitting end to a monumental achievement.

A Journey of Endurance and Purpose

Bob ran the equivalent of an ultra marathon each day, following a route that took him:

Along the rugged coastline of southwest England

Through Exmoor National Park

Into Wales and past Preston

Across the border into Scotland

All the way to John O’Groats

The journey tested him physically and mentally. He battled a bad ankle early on, endured extreme weather ranging from heatwaves to storms, and pushed through fatigue, blisters, and tough terrain.

Reflections from the Finish Line

“I’m exhausted but delighted to have crossed the finishing line,” said Bob. “I know once it’s sunk in that I’ve done it and the feet have stopped aching that I’ll look back and really appreciate all the work I put in to achieving this.”

Bob’s transformation over the past six years — from a sedentary office worker to a dedicated ultra-endurance athlete — has been remarkable. The last three and a half years, especially the past six months, were filled with intense training, including multiple marathons and ultra marathons.

Running for a Cause

Bob’s run wasn’t just a personal milestone. He raised over £5,000 (with donations still coming in) for Humanity Direct, a charity that funds life-saving and life-changing surgeries for children in Uganda.

“I wanted this run to really achieve something,” Bob said. “Every mile meant more donations, which means more children get the safe surgery they need. That thought kept me going through the bad ankle, bad weather, and blisters.”

A Word from Humanity Direct

Marc Shalam, Co-Founder of Humanity Direct, praised Bob’s achievement:

“Bob is nothing short of an inspiration. We’re incredibly proud he chose to dedicate this challenge to Humanity Direct. His incredible achievement has helped raise thousands of pounds to fund vital life-saving and life-changing operations for children who don’t have access to the medical care they need.”

Want to Support Bob’s Cause?

Donations are still open. Every pound goes directly towards life-transforming surgeries. You can donate to Bob’s fundraising campaign, visit: https://www.humanitydirect.org/bob/

Organised by Threshold Sports as part of their Threshold Trail Series, Race to the King promises a test of grit, spirit, and strategy as participants navigate ancient paths, rolling hills, and breathtaking coastal views from West Dean Gardens near Chichester.

The Challenge: Race to the King 2025 Distances

South Downs Way 100 – A Historic Race Concludes with Thrilling Finishes

The 14th annual South Downs Way 100 (SDW100®) is a challenging 100-mile non-stop foot race and a key event in the Gran Canaria World Trail Majors series. The SDW100 took place on Saturday, June 14, 2025. This year’s event saw a strong field of 600 starters tackling the historic South Downs Way National Trail.

Event and Course Overview

The race commenced at Matterley Bowl, near Winchester, the ancient capital of Saxon England, and led runners eastward along the chalk ridgeway. The conclusion is at the Eastbourne Sports Club Athletics Track. The course covered 100 miles (161 KM) with an elevation gain of 12700 ft (3800 m). A unique 4-mile (7.2-mile) loop through the private Matterley Estate started the race, which runners were advised not to recce beforehand.

Participants were subject to a strict 30-hour cut-off period. The race featured two waves: Wave 1 started at 05:30 and Wave 2 at 06:30. Only runners in Wave 1 were eligible for overall awards, while age group awards could be won from either wave.

Support for the athletes included a minimum of 12 well-stocked aid stations offering various provisions, including gels, electrolyte drinks, water, hot drinks from Houghton onwards, and hot food at Washington and the finish line. Full medical support, including static first aid teams, rapid response cars, and a race ambulance, was available in case of emergencies.

Mandatory equipment included a fully charged mobile phone, minimum 1 litre water capacity, a survival blanket or bag, a waterproof jacket (minimum 10000mm+ with sealed seams), a whistle, a headtorch, a backup light source (both minimum 100 lumens from Washington onwards), a long-sleeved base layer or fleece top, and a cup or mug. A one-hour time penalty was imposed for any missing mandatory item.

Pacers were permitted from the Kithurst Hill Crew Point (mile 50), with only one pacer allowed to accompany a runner at any given time. Pacers were required to wear a Pacer Race bib. Each runner was allowed one crew vehicle on the course, with access limited to designated crew points.

To qualify for the event, participants needed to have completed a minimum of a 50-mile distance race within 15 hours between January 1, 2020, and race day.

Pre-Race Contenders

Prior to the event, significant attention was given to the anticipated elite field.

Among the women, notable pre-race contenders included:

Claire Bannwarth (France, ITRA 720), known for her high volume of competitive kilometres.

Julia Davis (UK, La Sportiva, ITRA 672), a strong contender after her fourth-place finish at Kullamannen by UTMB in 2023 and third at Mozart 100 by UTMB (83km) in 2024.

Nicole Frisby (UK, ITRA 621), who had recently secured second place at the Hundred Hills 50km.

Geoffrey Cheshire (UK, ITRA 789), winner of the Winter Downs 100 in late 2024 and third in the North Downs Way 100 in 2024, aiming for “revenge” after a previous DNF at the SDW100.

The Beast of Bryher presents a unique 24-hour running adventure set on the small island of Bryher in the Isles of Scilly. Scheduled for 19th-20th September 2025, this event challenges participants to complete as many circumnavigations of the island’s coast path as they choose within a 24-hour period. It is an event designed to allow participants to “build your own adventure”.

The Challenge

Starting at 15:00 on Friday, 19th September, runners will experience a mix of daylight and night running, illuminated by torchlight for 12 hours after sunset. The course involves laps of approximately 7.5km (around 4.7 miles) of Bryher’s coast path. While the maximum elevation is about 34m, the terrain is described as moderately hilly and technical in places, with plenty of ups and downs, primarily on trails and coastal paths. A small portion is on road.

Participation Options

The Beast of Bryher welcomes a range of participants, from those new to night running or looking to complete their first marathon distance, to groups of friends seeking a shared adventure. You can take on the challenge solo or as part of a team of up to six members. Teams have the flexibility to decide who runs and how many laps each member completes. For those in a team, the option to run the final lap together and cross the finish line as a complete team is available from 13:30 onwards. Walking is also permitted as part of the event.

Logistics and Inclusions

The event fee is £200 for solo runners and £180 per person for team members. This includes return boat transfers to Bryher, camping from Thursday to Monday at Bryher Campsite (participants bring their own gear), access to a large marquee at Race HQ for rest, hot drinks and water, and hot food at designated times. Participants will also receive a live tracker with a big screen display at Race HQ and a dedicated drop bag and seat area for solo runners.
Mandatory Kit

Participants must carry a running rucksack (for teams), the provided live tracker, a minimum 500ml water bottle, emergency energy, a mobile phone, and a basic first aid kit at all times. For night running (18:30-07:00), two head torches (min 200lm), a warm hat, and a waterproof jacket with a hood (min 10’000HH) are required. Spare head torch batteries, waterproof trousers, and another basic first aid kit must be easily accessible at Race HQ.

Important Considerations

Travel to the Isles of Scilly involves flying or taking a passenger ferry from Cornwall (Penzance/Land’s End) or flying from Newquay or Exeter. Participants must arrive by 13:00 on Friday for the transfer boat to Bryher. Medical and physio teams will be on site to provide support, alongside continuous hot and cold food and drinks.

The event has a strict no-litter policy, with time penalties for any litter found. A minimum donation of £500 will be made to the Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust, which is involved with the organisation of the event. Please note, dogs are not permitted on the campsite or to accompany runners.

The event is limited to 50 teams. No refunds are offered for the 2025 event, but deferrals to the 2026 race are possible until 18th July 2025, subject to an admin/cost inflation fee payable at the point of deferral. Transfers of a place to another runner are allowed until 10th September.

Scilly60 Events organise many sports events on the Isles of Scilly and an interview with RD Wez Swain and a race report from the Scilly 60 will feature in a forthcoming issue of Ultrarunning World Magazine which will be on the dedicated website: Ultrarunningworldmagazine.com.

With its popularity growing the event has 6 other ultramarathon options:

The Montane Summer Spine Challenger South is a non-stop, 108 mile race along the Pennine Way from Edale to Hardraw with a time limit of 60 hours.
The Montane Summer Spine Challenger North is a non-stop, 160 mile race along the Pennine Way from Hardraw to Kirk Yetholm.
The Montane Summer Spine Sprint South is a non-stop, 46 mile race along the Pennine Way from Edale to Hebden Bridge with a time limit of 18 hours.
The Montane Summer Spine Sprint North is a non-stop, 43 mile race along the Pennine Way from Brown Rigg to Kirk Yetholm with a time limit of 18 hours.
A special edition of the Montane Spine Challenger South and North has been created exclusively for active Mountain Rescue members, MRT Challenge North & MRT Challenge South.
