Herb gardening is becoming more and more popular every day, and for a good reason. Herbs have practical value, serve a purpose, and with herb gardening, you can actually use your plants. When most people think of herb gardening they automatically think of cooking, but herbs are also grown for their pleasant aroma and their beauty.

One important part of herb gardening is drying the herbs for use during the winter months, especially if you plan on cooking with them. First the tops of leafy herbs have to be cut, washed, and hung up for the water to evaporate. Then, tie stems together and hang up in a paper bag to dry. After two to three weeks they must be removed; crumble the leaves, dry them out in the oven, and store in a glass jar.

One of the most common herbs gown in herb gardening is basil. “Dark Opal” and regular green basil are beautiful additions to any garden and often used as decoration. Dark Opal has light pink flowers and dark red leaves. Basil isn’t just used for its looks; it is used for extra flavor in tomato juices and pastes.

Chives are very petite looking and resemble a blade of grass. They are much stronger than they look, however, and will grow well through a drought and a drought. Their toughness and sturdiness makes Chives a perfect plant for herb gardening, especially if the gardener doesn’t want plants that require a lot of hassle. Chives are good used in salads, egg dishes, and many different sauces.

Mint is also very simple to grow and is good to use in mint jelly, mint juleps, lemonade, and any other kind of fruity drink. Mint is also good in herb gardening for its unique minty smell. Two herbs that appear in nearly everyone’s herb garden are thyme and sage. Both of these herb gardening favorites are used for flavoring soups, chicken, turkey, pork, and other sausages. Sage is also grown sometimes for its beautiful blue spiked flowers.

Lavender is probably the best smelling herb in all of herb gardening and is often used in candles, as a perfume scent, and to improve the smell in linen chests. The light purple flowers smell absolutely lovely.

Other types of herbs often grown in herb gardening include borage (used in salads), chervil (used in egg dishes), sweet marjoram (flavors lamb, fish, salad, and soup), sesame (flavors crackers, cookies, and bread), and dill (flavors meats and used in pickles). Herb gardening allows gardeners to use herbs from their own garden for cooking, looks, and smell. Herb gardening will produce much fresher herbs with more flavor than store-bought herbs, and are a lot cheaper.

In case your garden appears dull or boring, and you intend to spice things up a lttle bit, I suggest you look for funny garden gnomes. Having a lawn gnome statue will probably catch the attention of people passing your lawn due to the fact it’s impossible to overlook these types of precious figurines. These decorative gnomes initially were being useful to safeguard versus evil sorcery during the Eighteenth century in Germany, however the purpose has evolved ever since then into attractive tiny decorations! The basic lawn gnome features a pointy crimson hat and also generally is finished with a gray or even white-colored beard. They’re generally made from porcelain, so when you purchase the gnome try to be very careful while handling it simply because it’ll be delicate. In the event garden gnomes tickle your fancy but you don’t get the “Whoa!” aspect from your regular statue, perhaps a female garden gnome will scream out to you. Girl garden gnomes aren’t very different from every other lawn gnome with the exception that they are available in many different looks. The actual football girl garden gnome statue is a decent example of a female garden gnome available. Needless to say, there are more lady gnomes you are able to choose from, you just need to choose the right one!

I just recommended earlier that you should look for humorous lawn gnomes, and now I’m going to explain just what the funny garden gnome is. If you are prepared for a chuckle and a giggle, look into the hilarious lawn gnomes. A number of the amusing gnome statues is going to crack you up for example the mooning garden gnome, a zombie garden gnome, and also the miniature garden gnomes! The particular mooning garden gnome is popular with it’s 4 rosy red-colored cheeks and its naive grin. Up in line next will be the dangerous zombie garden gnome figurine. I assure you, they are quite the looker. Mini garden gnomes also are pretty stunning, and very small. They appear identical to the bigger version of garden gnomes, with the exception of they are much, much smaller. In case none of these samples of garden gnomes tickle your fancy, keep looking simply because we’d literally end up being right here all day if I started listing off all of the available gnomes.

I love all garden gnomes; they are simply delightful to keep on your patio, and perfect for adding joy to every yard. You could in no way be unsuccessful with keeping a lawn gnome in your backyard. The cute figurines will add a majestic feel to your lawn, that everyone could be attracted to. Find the right garden gnome available for you today!

Yard ornaments aren’t just for making a person’s yard look elegant. They can help create individuality as well as variety in an otherwise dull back garden. A few of the neatest ornaments are gnomes just like the funny garden gnomes, female garden gnomes, mooning gnome and several various other hilarious gnomes for sale.

What Does Growing Organic Mean

You have decided you want to become an organic gardener. But what exactly does organic gardening mean. Organic gardeners don’t use pesticides, herbicides or synthetic fertilizers on their plants. Organic gardening is much more than what you don’t do, but rather what you do.

When gardening organically, think of your fruit and vegetables as part of an eco system that starts in the soil and includes the water supply, people, wildlife and even insects. An organic gardener strives to work in harmony with natural systems and to minimize and continually replenish any resources the garden consumes.

Organic gardening operates on the concept of replenishing or recycling. You use kitchen scraps, garden waste and animal waste, to mulch and compost. You can use common household items like vinegar, soap and some garlic and hot pepper concoctions to prevent pests and newspaper and mulch to prevent weeds.

Organic gardeners rely on developing a healthy, fertile soil and growing a mixture of crops. Genetically modified (GM) crops are constantly in the news as of late and are not allowed under organic standards because they are modified and not original to their variety, they are unsafe and untested.

The merging together of plants and soil allowing the Earth to naturally bear what it was made to do would be considered organic gardening. The plants and the soil are one working together to provide food and nourishment not only to humans but to animals and organisms as well.

Why Go Organic

You might wander how you can garden without herbicides and pesticides and how are you going to control the weeds, bugs, and animals that may threaten a thriving garden? Herbicides and pesticides were considered the gardeners best friend and now you will be expected not to use them?

But the thing is, for years gardeners have been growing things just fine without the use of chemicals. Early settlers of our land did not have any herbicides, pesticides or synthetic fertilizers and they got along just fine.

We should be able to use the same ingredients as the early settlers used rather than franken chemicals born in a chemist’s laboratory. It only makes sense that we should be able to apply the same principles to get the same results as they did today.

Vegetables and fruit produced using organic method tastes better, have more vitamins and minerals and have none of the cancer causing chemicals in them. It is simply more nourishing and more healthful. There are many advantages to gardening organically.

There has been a great rise in the interest of ecology and concern about the environment that has bred new life to this form of gardening. By using natural materials, such as kitchen and garden scraps a gardener can create compost and fertilize the garden naturally.

Taking advantage companion planting and natural predators the home gardener can manage pest control and maintain an organic garden quite easily. Organic gardening goes way beyond lack of chemicals in our vegetables and fruit and the benefits for us and our families.

Organic or Non Organic, What’s the Difference

The USDA did a study in 1999 comparing essential nutrient content in our food. They found that about half of the essential nutrients on our food had been reduced by as much as 38 percent as compared to the 1950’s.

If nutrients are not in the soil; if we’re depleting the soil through industrial processes, and it’s not in the plants, it’s not in our milk, in our meat, it’s not in us. Many of the immune enhancing compounds that make life wonderful, make our food taste wonderful, and also protect us from cancers and a lot of chronic disease. The attributes to organic food are not just the avoidance of toxins. It’s also about what it does have in there, and that’s the superior nutrients.

Vitamin C and dry matter contents are higher, on average, in organically grown crops then they are in non-organic crops. Mineral contents are also higher, on average, in organically grown crops. Food grown organically contains substantially higher concentrations of antioxidants and other health promoting compounds than crops produced with pesticides.

Most people who decide to start organic gardening report that the enjoyment they receive is paramount to their decision to go the route of no-chemicals in favor of the all-natural route. Many people like to watch the tender new growth come to full maturity and, as a bonus, you get to eat it!

Naturally grown corn on the cob and newly picked green beans are especially noticeable, but nothing compares to vine ripened organically grown tomato. When you take your first bite of an organically grown tomato it’s something you won’t forget and you will never want a commercially grown tomato again. When you start organic gardening, you get extra fresh vegetables.

A phenomenon noted by most people when harvesting their very first vegetables from their very first garden is that everyone eats much more of a given vegetable than they would of a similar commercial variety. This trait extends to all vegetables you grow yourself when you go the organic method.

Need More Proof

For a gardener who still isn’t convinced about the need to garden organically, here are some statistics that may help change your mind. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) considers 60 percent of herbicides, 90 percent of fungicides, and 30 percent of insecticides to be carcinogenic. Pesticides are also notoriously hazardous. Commonly used pesticides have been linked to health problems such as:

•	Neurotoxicity

•	Disruption of your endocrine system

•	Carcinogenicity

•	Immune system suppression

•	Male infertility and reduced reproductive function

•	Miscarriages

On average, conventional produce has only 83 percent of the nutrients of organic produce. Studies have found significantly higher levels of nutrients such as vitamin C, iron, magnesium and phosphorus, and significantly less nitrates (a toxin) in organic crops.

Higher nutrient content naturally means greater health benefits. A 2003 study in the Journal of Agricultural Food Chemistry concluded that organic foods are better for fighting cancer. And in 2005, scientists found that, compared to rats that ate conventional diets, organically fed rats experienced a variety of health benefits.

The choice is yours, it’s really not that difficult to go the organic route and the health benefits will be worth the trouble. You will be able to recycle your kitchen and garden waste and at the same time help save the environment.

Asparagus is a hardy perennial plant. It rises to the height of five feet and up, with a vertical, branching stem, short slender tube like leaves, and greenish sagging flowers. The seeds, which are produced in spherical, scarlet berries, are black, somewhat triangular, and retain their germination powers four years.

It is indigenous to the shores of various countries of Europe and Asia and since its introduction, has become domesticated to a considerable extent in this country.

Propagation- Asparagus is propagated from seed, which may be sown either in autumn, just before the closing-up of the ground, or in spring as soon as the soil is in good working condition. The seed-bed should be thoroughly spaded over, or tilled up so the soil is fine. Level and raked the surface smooth.

Plant seeds 1/2 inch deep and 2 inches apart in the row. Start the seeds in the spring when the soil temperatures have reached 60

Tomatoes can be started from seed, but most gardeners buy small plants and put them in the garden in a warm and sunny spot. They must have a great deal of full sun to ripen satisfactorily on the vine. Decide if you want to start tomatoes from seed, indoors, about eight weeks before the last frost warning, or buy small plants to set out in the garden after the chance of frost is past.

Growing tomatoes from seed requires a packet of whatever type you want. Small tomatoes are called plum or cherry and used in salad. Roma tomatoes are medium-sized and oval shaped and often used for sauce. Round types include Big Boy, Early Girl and Big Beefsteak which vary in size and are used for sandwiches or eaten by themselves.

Seeds can be started in egg cartons and cleaned out yogurt cups, or small pots and flats. Pots should be new or cleaned and disinfected with one part bleach and ten parts water. It is best to use a soilless mix for good water retention and drainage and air space. This is mostly sphagnum peat moss. Perlite, a volcanic mineral is commonly used. Vermiculite, a mica-like substance, is good if it is potting grade level. Seeds need fourteen to eighteen hours of florescent light per day or very strong window light, which is rare in early spring. Water as needed, but soilless mix should never be soggy.

When the seeds have grown into small plants with actual leaves, transplant them into small pots, and then two weeks later into four inch pots. Do not plant them in the garden outside until after the last frost warning. Keep the soil moist but not drenched. The growing tomatoes should be buried deeply when transplanted into the garden with only the top few leaves showing. If cages are used, plant them fifteen inches apart. If not, twenty-four to thirty-six inches apart. Be sure not to dig the cages or stakes into the roots when transplanting.

When the plants are about three inches tall, remove the bottom one inch of leaves to prevent fungus and contaminants from attacking. Water the plants deeply and regularly at the base of the plant, not from the top, to prevent mold. Earthworms and some bugs are needed in the soil to aerate it so don’t kill them. Plant-eating aphids which will be on leaves.

Suckers, are little branches that grow out of the crotch joint of two branches of a plant and will take away energy from the producing part of the plant. Pinch them off and more tomatoes will grow from the plant. Growing tomatoes like to be near other plants like chives, onions, parsley, carrots, garlic and nasturtiums. They need about eight hours of full sun per day to vine ripen. Mulching around the bottom of the plants with straw, grass clippings or compost will help them stay moist.

Growing tomatoes is the most rewarding when you pick that first ripe one and eat it and know that it is healthy and chemical free.

Many find gardening a relaxing and fulfilling hobby. Growing your own fruits, vegetables, and berries at home offers significant savings over purchasing them at the supermarket while delivering superior flavor and the assurance of an all-natural growth process. Growing flowers is an easy way to add splashes of beautiful color to your environment. Whether food or flower, plants you are in a position to grow in your own garden are typically seeds. However, bulbs operate a little bit differently, and there are some rules of thumb to follow when planting bulbs.

Bulbs need to be planted when they are dormant for the year. Bulbs for plants that bloom in the summer should be planted in autumn or winter. Bulbs that bloom in the autumn are best planted in the spring. When planting bulbs, you should aim to plant them at a depth of about twice their height, about three to four inches apart. Perennials, on the other hand, need to be planted with their roots in the fertile soil, and their tops, or crowns, right at the level of the top soil. They also need more space than other bulbs, so seek to plant them at least six inches apart.

Bulbs tend to flourish in fertile soil that offers ample drainage and a neutral pH of between 5.5 and 7. Most plants do best in soil of this quality and pH. If you test your soil and find it is too acidic, add some lime to lower the acidity. If you find it is too alkaline, you can add sulfur to increase the acidity. All that said, while these are ideal conditions for planting bulbs, bulbs are very hearty, and can still thrive in less ideal conditions. Bulbs even do well in infertile sandy soils, provided ample fertilization is added on a regular basis.

Adequate drainage is necessary to ensure the bulbs do not rot over time. Raised garden beds work well in this regard; adding sand to the soil will also improve drainage significantly. While bulbs will generally do well in most soil without additional fertilization, if you are inclined to fertilize, be very careful not to expose the bulbs themselves to fertilizer, as they will burn. When planting bulbs, keep far from any trees, as tree root systems use most, if not all, of the nutrients in nearby soil for themselves, leaving none for any bulbs trying to bloom nearby.

Bulbs can be successfully grown in pots. Fill the pot half full with the soil of your choosing, lay the bulb flat, and then add soil to the rim of the pot. Do not allow your potted bulbs to overheat by exposing them to too much direct sunlight, and bring them indoors once they begin to flower.

As for maintenance, bulbs rarely require watering. Water when initially planting, and do not water again unless you live in an area that experiences very low rainfall. Prune summer plants when they become affected by frost, and prune evergreens of any dead branches. Once bulbs have successfully flowered, very little further maintenance will be required.

Having decided to plant a garden, there are a few things to take into consideration. How much garden space is available? Is the soil prepared and ready to plant? How long is the growing season? What types of plants are desired to be grown? Is a garden hard to maintain?

Gardens come in many different shapes and sizes. The amount of space available to plant a garden will dictate the quantity and type of items to be planted. A garden could range in size from several acres of land to a planter located on the balcony of an apartment. Whatever space is available should be sufficient to plant a garden.

Soil preparation is very important before planting a garden. It is best to disc or till the garden spot in the fall, and then in the early spring add fertilizer and disc or till it again. For small areas a small garden shovel or hoe will be sufficient for working the soil. In very large areas a small tractor with a plow and disc may be more suitable. Eliminate any dirt clods after tilling by harrowing or raking the area to leave a smooth finish that is ready for planting.

Location helps decide what types of items to plant in the garden. The length of the growing season will make a difference in the successful outcome of growing some types of items. Research the average temperatures for the area, and decide how long the growing season will be. Some plants do better when the temperatures are cool and others when it is hot. One widely used technique is to start the seeds in containers indoors before temperatures are warm enough to plant outdoors. Although this procedure works very well in a greenhouse, it is not necessary to own one. A seed in a small cup of soil kept moist with water, and placed in a window sill, will sprout and begin to grow. Once the outside temperatures are sufficiently warm to not freeze the plant it can be transferred to the outdoor garden area.

Knowledge of the various types of plants desired will help in the decision of what to plant and when to plant it. Become familiar with the specific types of vegetables and/or flowers to be grown. Learn how long it takes to go from planting the seed, to how long it takes vegetables to reach harvest, or for flowers to bloom. This is as easy as reading the information found on the back of most seed packets.

Maintaining a garden requires continual weeding and watering of the plants. Too many weeds, or the incorrect amount of water, and the plants will suffer. Keep the soil soft to prevent weeds, and watch for wilting or yellowing leaves which indicate the incorrect amount of water.

To plant a garden takes some effort and thought, but will be very rewarding. With sufficient space, soil that is prepared for planting, an acceptable growing season, an understanding of what plants are desired, and appropriate maintenance, a beautiful garden can be obtained.

Stan published an e-book “Organic Tomato Magic” and after his death, Kacper sought to pass on the knowledge and passion of his grandfather’s relationship with plants to the world. Stan created tomato magic and doubled tomato yields enjoyed by other gardeners, creating a livelihood that sustained him and his family in Poland, a country ravaged by war. So knowing these techniques and tricks have been tested and proven by a master in the field is one definite advantage to utilizing the Growing Tomato Secrets system. It’s like having the inside scoop on when to plant tomatoes, a series of conditions that will transform your tomato growing experience.

Another important advantage when to plant tomatoes is the emphasis on organic gardening. The use of pesticides and toxic chemicals doesn’t belong anywhere near our food or in our bodies. Best of all? You don’t them need for growing tomatoes. Organic gardening is the wave of the future and gardeners of old, like Stan, didn’t have the luxury of fancy patented pesticides. They had to use innovation, observation, and intelligent application to create systems that produced results using the least amount of additives or expensive tampering. Gardeners of today have begun to revert to the philosophy of the past. Simple is better. Simple is more efficient. Simple helps you grow a heck of a lot more tomatoes!

But when to plant tomatoes is more than that. Tomatoes are a delicious and nutritious fruit that delight taste buds and provide important vitamins for our well-being. The mission of Growing Tomatoes is to produce more delicious, organic, and nutritious fruit, just the way Stan would have wanted it.

If you have a problem with squirrels in your yard there are many different types of squirrel repellents available to help your situation. There are animal repellers, motion detected sprinklers, sprays, powders and granules which can all be effective in deterring squirrels.

Before you go out and purchase any of these products it is wise to really look at your situation first so that you do not buy something that ends up doing nothing to help the problem. There are so many different squirrel repellents and each has it’s own claims to be effective that you really need to read the “fine print” before you open your wallet. Most of the sprays, powders and granules are safe to use on any plants in your garden but read the bottle first because some may not be safe to use on your vegetables but may be safe for ornamental flowers or plants. Always make sure that any squirrel repellents you choose are safe to use where your children or your pets may be playing before you decide to treat the area.

All of these repellents will indicate in the description approximetely how much square footage they will cover so you should definately figure out how much area you would like to cover before you buy. The other thing that a lot of us do not take into account is rainfall or precipitation. Obviously if you treat an area and then it rains, the repellent will most likely be washed away. Always make sure that you re-treat each area after a rainfall for the repellent to be effective.

Most of the squirrel repellents available today contain a spicy or hot ingredient and some contain the scent of a predator like fox urine. The spicy scent or taste is produced from an ingredient called Capsaicin which is present in Cayenne. We have all tried sprinkling cayenne pepper in areas where we want to deter squirrels and then the next day we notice they are back. As mentioned above, you must reapply the repellent especially if it has rained or it will not be effective. Squirrels have a very acute sense of taste and smell so all these products are designed to work on those senses and in turn will deter them from the area.

The liquid repellents are available in a spray bottle for easy application, the granules and powders are available in a shaker container for spreading or shaking the repellent around the area and there are also packets available that you can hang from your bird feeders or tree branches. The packets claim to last up to thirty days as do most of the liquids, powders and granules. You can actually mix some of these products right in with your birdseed which will effect squirrels keen sense of taste and smell but not effect your birds. Birds do not have the same senses that a squirrel has so they will still eat the seed.

Motion detected sprinklers and animal repellers are some other options available that will help you in deterring squirrels from your yard. When an animal enters an area where these are present, they will detect the motion and it will activate the device. Some of the animal repellers come equipped with a solar panel which will keep it charged at all times. This is a good option as we all forget to check batteries and then wonder why it isn’t working. The sprays, powders etc are probably more effective than these methods but they might be worth trying.

Safflower birdseed is another good method because of it’s bitter taste. As mentioned earlier, a squirrel has a keen sense of taste and Safflower seeds are not something a squirrel craves. These are popular with many birds such as Cardinals because of their high-oil content. They are popular with many small songbirds. If you try this method you can attract some birds you may not have had at your feeder in the past and you will keep the squirrels away from your seed.

Homemade squirrel repellents can be found on the internet if you do some research and they are quite easy to prepare. In the long run they will save you money and are worth trying if you have the time. These are mostly made up of cayenne pepper, onions, hot peppers and with dish soap or even Murphy’s Oil Soap added to the mix.

If you decide to try any of these methods we highly recommended that you do your research first so that you do not waste your valuable time and money on a product that does not work for your situation. Always take in to account the environment and do not if possible use any products that contain poisons. Do not use anything that could be dangerous to animals and especially children or humans in general.

Most of these products have good customer reviews so you can see what actual consumers are saying and then make an informative decision. We also recommend that you visit your neighbourhood wild bird store if at all possible and get advice from an expert. Hopefully there is a squirrel repellent product that can help you beat those pesky squirrels and win the battle in your yard.
