Hyperpigmentation is a common and cosmetically significant condition which can cause anxiety and distress for those suffering with it. Hyaluronic Acid Toner

Apparently the number one toner in Korea, this slightly viscous essence is closer in texture to something like the Hada Labo Gokujyun Hyaluronic Acid Lotion (available in SA here) than a traditional watery toner and is a lovely first step skincare product. Applied to a clean, dry face, this immediately plumps up the skin and leaves it feeling fresh and hydrated. Mutiple layers (or “skins”, as in, the 7 Skin Method) increase the sense of hydration if you are very dehydrated (I usually do 2-3) and it’s juicy enough to be used alone as a moisturising comfort product if you’re very oily. The Hada Labo toners are still my favourites but this is a very close second and I will enjoy every minute of using it up. Note: the packaging says that it contains “50% Hyaluronic Acid” which actually refers to the 1% concentration of Sodium Hyaluronate; a form of HA that is considered even more effective due to its greater compatibility with the skin.

Hyaluronic Acid Water Essence

The name is a little misleading as this product is really a serum but nonetheless, this is another wonderfully juicy step if you need to layer some hyaluronic acid into your routine. Lightweight and easily absorbed, it’s non-sticky and slips neatly between essence and moisturiser (or, in my case, more hydrating serums!). The formula contains eight types of HA at various molecular levels (high weight = easily absorbed for superficial hydration, low weight = deeper hydration, a combo = both), natural moisturising factors and prickly pear seed oil (although it doesn’t feel oily at all so don’t be put off by this). Again, this would be suitable as a moisturiser on its own if you’re very oily. I would rate this as a middleweight serum in the sense that I don’t think I could use it on its own (but I’m very dehydrated) but I think it would be perfectly effective for someone who needs less help in this area than I do. It’s not as sophisticated as something like the Lamelle Hydrating HA Plus but it’s got a bit more punch than something like the Ordinary Hyaluronic Acid + B5.

Hyaluronic Acid Moist Cream

What a delight this cream is! It’s very unusual for Camilla and I to use a moisturiser that suits us both but this is one of the rare exceptions. It’s a very simple comfort product and by that I mean it doesn’t contain a whole lot of fancy actives, it doesn’t claim to be “anti-ageing”, it doesn’t contain SPF – it is just a moisturiser. And that’s not a bad thing: I don’t tend to use moisturisers that come with bells and whistles because I use targeted products and treatments to address my particular skin concerns. In my opinion, a good moisturiser should provide comfort to the skin and help to maintain your barrier; something this does very well, while leaving your face feeling really glowy and plump. A little goes a long way too so experiment with how much you use – I use a small pea-sized amount on my face in the day (if you’re drier, you may want more) but I’ll double that amount at night when I don’t have to worry about layering SPF and makeup on top.

Hyaluronic Acid Water Sleeping Mask

Of all of the Isntree products I tried, this was the least impressive. It’s not a bad product, I just didn’t find it as effective as other overnight masks I’ve tried and it also didn’t seem to do anything that the Moist Cream couldn’t do. Similarly to the Water Essence and the Moist Cream, it’s formulated with multiple forms of HA at varying weights, soothing centella asiatica and allantoin, natural moisturising factors and brightening fig fruit extract but hydration is definitely its main purpose in life. Look, it’s fine, but I have a deep and profound love for the Laneige Water Sleeping Mask and I’m afraid not much can beat it.

Clear Skin PHA Sleeping Mask

Polyhydroxy acids (PHAs) are a new-generation chemical exfoliant that tend to be more suitable for sensitive skin, especially if you’ve struggled to use AHAs and BHAs in the past without a reaction. One of the most common PHAs is gluconolactone which is present in a 5% concentration in this overnight treatment, gently sloughing away dead skin cells while you sleep. The formula also contains 2% niacinamide (vitamin B3); a wonder-ingredient for supporting the skin barrier, reducing the appearance of pores and tackling uneven skin tone. The overall effect is a smoother complexion without aggravation. Camilla described it as giving her “glass skin” after just one use and she’s usually very sensitive to exfoliating acids so perhaps worth a try if your skin also tends to be easily annoyed.

Clear Skin 8% AHA Essence

This is a great alternative to something like the Pixi Glow Tonic and other chemical exfoliants designed to be used at the toner stage of your routine. Containing two forms of AHA – 4% Glycolic Acid and 4% Lactic Acid – regular use will help to keep skin clear and smooth, while tackling pigmentation, dark spots and fine lines over time. I didn’t experience any tingling so I think the formulation is quite mild but the results were on par with my experiences using a product like The Ordinary Lactic Acid 5% + HA 2%. There are much stronger chemical exfoliators on the market but this is a great option if you’re more sensitive (but always do a patch test if you are!) or you want more of an everyday maintenance product. I also saw a review on the Glow Theory site where someone had used it to treat KP on their arms with great success.

The Inkey List Salicylic Acid Cleanser

You may be unfamiliar with The Inkey List as this brand isn’t available in South Africa yet, but it’s one of the new generation of super-affordable skincare ranges inspred by The Ordinary that focus on basic, hero ingredient formulations. Where I think The Inkey List has improved on The Ordinary’s concept is they have kept the product line small, focused and easy to understand, unlike DECIEM’s offering which is now completely overblown. I bought a few things from Cult Beauty the last time I was in the UK and this was one of the stand-outs: it contains 2% salicylic acid alongside a zinc compound that helps to control excess oil and allantoin, an anti-irritant, to help soothe and protect. The surfactant is coconut-derived so it won’t dry out your skin and it works very nicely with my Foreo. I bought it to compare to my beloved Lamelle Clarity Active Cleanse (both are soap-free and contain the same concentration of salicylic acid as the key ingredient) and although they are actually quite different formulations, I find the decongesting effect very similar. The Lamelle one contains tea tree (antibacterial), sodium PCA (hydrating) and ivy extract (astringent) so might be better if you’re acne-prone but otherwise The Inkey List cleanser is a very solid and more affordable alternative.

Huxley Deep Cleansing Foam*

The first things I noticed about this cleanser were it’s delicious scent and it’s beautiful periwinkle colour – both completely superficial and irrelevant to its performance but pleasing nonetheless! Just like the rest of the Huxley line, this cleanser contains Sahara Prickly Pear Seed Oil (hydrating) as well as vitamin E (antioxidant), tangerine extract (exfoliating), Blue Agave (also hydrating) and Blue Lotus extract (soothing). The texture is very rich and creamy, as is the lather. Something that surprised me about this cleanser is how clean it rinses away – as in, squeaky clean. That’s usually the sign of a formula that contains drying surfactants like SLS (which this doesn’t) but I persevered and haven’t found it dries my skin out at all. So, if you like that feeling when you cleanse but you don’t want to compromise your skin barrier, this would be a great option for you.

Ole Henriksen Wonderfeel Double Cleanser

I was *so* excited to try some Ole Henriksen products when I saw them in Boots when I was in London last month. I bought the Cold Plunge Pore Mask (spoiler alert: I hate it, it’s full of highly irritating ingredients, caused a reaction on my skin) and this cleanser which appealed to me because it sounded deliciously balmy. Not only is it not balmy at all – it’s a pretty basic cream cleanser, although to be fair it was my assumption that was wrong, not the way it is marketed – but it has rather average cleansing abilities and a hideous “blackcurrant” scent (eew, why – I really don’t like fruity/berry fragrances). It’s nowhere near as effective as an oil-based cleanser for removing makeup and it’s ok as a cold cream but I think calling it a Double Cleanser is a bit of a reach. It’s also difficult to remove – the product takes forever to rinse away with water and, even using a microfibre cloth, it takes longer than usual to get every last trace of it off your face. All in all, an extremely average and overpriced product that’s put me off investing any more money in the Ole Henriksen range (especially since I hate the mask too). I will finish the tube because there’s no reason to waste it but I would not recommend it.

Lamelle Correctives Recharge CE

Product overview: This is a high-potency vitamin C serum which contains 20% L-Ascorbic Acid; the purest and most active form of vitamin C. This is combined with 1% alpha-tocopherol (Vitamin E) in a stabilised, anhydrous (water-free) base. Read this to learn more about the importance of antioxidants like vitamin C in your skincare.

My experience: As someone with pigmentation, you know I love a vitamin C serum and as a huge fan of the Lamelle range, I was excited to put this through its paces. In terms of texture, it’s unlike most of the other vit cs I’ve tried in that it’s a (fairly thin) white lotion which makes it a little bit challenging to fit into my personal skincare routine. Having tried it layered with a few different things, I can say that it definitely works best on clean skin or skin that has only had a hydrating essence applied and allowed to dry down. You also need to ideally let it sink in for a couple of minutes before going in with the next layer, which in my case is hydrating serums, moisturiser and SPF, otherwise it can clump up slightly on the skin. The texture is also a little bit grainy (like most high-concentration vitamin C products) but I find this disappears on application so not an issue for me.

Despite the challenges with application, I have noticed that my pigmentation seems a bit lighter and my skin tone more even in the five weeks I’ve been testing it, although in fairness my pigmentation is mainly hormonal so it can fluctuate despite avoiding the sun and using strong SPF and antioxidant products on the daily. It caused a very slight tingle the first few times I used it (another very common result with strong vitamin C serums) but that went away quickly and now I have no reaction at all. I also really love the packaging – I wish more skincare products came in convenient, travel-friendly, plastic squeezy tubes.

This product sits in the middle of the Lamelle vitamin C range at 20% L-Ascorbic Acid so it’s better suited for those with a good tolerance of the ingredient. One step up, the Vita C 30 Cream contains 30% L-Ascorbic Acid for more advanced users, while the Vita-C Lipid Serum with 20% Tetrahexyldecyl Ascorbate in a squalane base is better for more sensitive or intolerant skin, or as a “starter” vitamin C product.

UPDATE (May 2019): I’ve just finished my bottle of Recharge CE and now, having used it every day for three months, I have to say that I am thrilled with the results. Although it’s difficult to say that this product is alone responsible for a significant improvement in my skin radiance and reduction in visible pigmentation because I have regular peels and Dermapen to tackle these issues, it can’t be a coincidence that recently my skin has been better than ever. It really is a brilliant addition to my skincare routine and I would wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a good antioxidant serum.

Huxley Good Night Sleep Mask

Product overview: Described by the brand as “an intensely hydrating overnight sleep mask that results in a healthy and dewy-looking skin radiance by morning” that is “suitable for all skin types”. It’s a lightweight gel mask that contains Huxley’s key ingredient, Sahara Prickly Pear Seed Oil, which is derived from a desert cactus which provides intensive moisturisation due to its excellent ability to retain water.

My experience: The texture of this overnight hydrating mask is very light so it feels more like a refreshing gel moisturiser than a mask. In all honestly, it pretty much performed like a gel moisturiser too – I can’t say that it struck me as more hydrating than something like the Clinique Moisture Surge 72-Hour Auto-Replenishing Hydrator which makes it a bit redundant in my collection. I also think that, although it claims to be suitable for all skin types, I don’t think it would be enough for dry skin as there’s nothing in the formula to compensate for a loss of oil. On the other hand, if you have combination to oily skin and don’t already have or use a gel moisturiser then it would make a great overnight treatment to boost water levels in the skin and help keep it balanced.

REN Evercalm Overnight Recovery Balm

Product overview: A nighttime rescue balm that uses “enzymatically activated oils” (I have no idea what that means either) to feed and moisturise the skin, strengthen the skin barrier and relieve irritation. The lightweight, non-greasy balm-to-oil texture absorbs quickly to replenish the skin’s lipid barrier and provide deep moisturisation.

My experience: Besides my cleansers, I don’t generally use oils on my skin as they just don’t work for me but I enjoyed using this one as it didn’t cause any irritation or sensitivity (probably because it’s actually designed to treat those issues!) and was light enough that it properly sinks in without leaving a greasy residue on your face. I took this with me when I went skiing recently and used it most nights to keep my skin barrier in check and it did exactly what it claimed to do. A little goes a long way so although the pot is fairly small, I think it would last a really long time (way longer than a regular “night cream”) and while it won’t replace my beloved Skoon Ruby Marine Overnight Hydrating Mask – which is my opinion does the same thing – I enjoyed testing it and can happily recommend it.

The sk.in concept was sparked when Dr Nikolic realised that there was a real need for medical grade cosmeceuticals to be available without having to visit a doctor’s office. My aim is to instead provide a comprehensive breakdown of the serums and their formulation intricacies in an effort to explain how they work, what makes them unique, and what results you can expect to see.

What is it and why do I need it? An antioxidant. Antioxidants can help to protect your skin from the damaging effects of the sun (and other external aggressors, like pollution) by speeding up the skin’s natural repair systems and directly inhibiting further damage. Using an antioxidant will help counteract the signs of UV and environmental damage, and they are especially effective in improving hydration, reducing pigmentation, increasing collagen production, and improving fine lines and wrinkles.

What are the key ingredients and what makes the formulation unique? 

The formula contains 10% Ascorbyl Tetraisopalmitate (“AT”), a stable, oil-soluble derivative of Vitamin C. Pure strains of Vitamin C can cause irritation, but this derivative can allegedly be used in higher concentrations without any drawbacks, and because it’s oil-soluble, it can penetrate into the deeper layers of the skin to do some serious anti-ageing work. The formula also contains a blend of ingredients which improve elasticity, tone and texture, enhance the skin’s barrier, reduce inflammation and increase hydration. AT has also been shown to stay longer in the skin as it is not eliminated through the water channels, thereby providing a longer lasting effect.

What is it and why do I need it? A hyaluronic acid serum designed to counteract the signs of dry, damaged skin. Hyaluronic Acid (“HA”) is a natural substance found in the human connective tissue, whose function is to cushion and lubricate. It is also a humectant, meaning that it draws water from the environment into the skin, helping to keep it hydrated. It plays a critical role in the maintenance of moisture levels, nourishment of the skin’s matrix and improvement in the appearance of firmness, plumpness and smoothness.

What are the key ingredients and what makes the formulation unique?

This formulation contains a 5% HA Complex, as well as AT, Vitamin E and Ceramides. The issue with HA is that it depletes as we age, with reserves starting to dip from as early as our twenties. Coupled with that is the fact that HA has a short life cycle in the skin, with 30%-50% degrading every 24 hours. Maintaining these reserves at a deeper cellular level is a real challenge, and unfortunately the size of the HA molecules in many serums and moisturisers are simply too large to penetrate the skin for optimal hydration. sk.in marvel contains high strength combinations of small, medium, and large molecular weight HA for maximum skin penetration and hydration. What is it and why do I need it? A 1% retinol. Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A and is the form most easily absorbed by the body. Retinol acts as an antioxidant and collagen stimulator simultaneously, so not only does it protect your skin against damage by free radicals (sun, pollution etc), but it also stimulates cell turnover, thereby lessening the appearance of fine lines, wrinkles and dark spots. Additional benefits include an improvement in hydration and skin laxity, a smoother skin texture, an improvement in breakouts, blemishes and bumps, a reduction in excess oil production, as well as a healthier, youthful glow.

What are the key ingredients and what makes the formulation unique?

sk.in flash 2 contains 1% Hydroxypinacolone Retinoate (“HPR”), the newest member of the retinoid family. At the head of the retinoid family sits retinoic acid, which is the only form of retinoid which can be interpreted by our skin cells. All other retinoids (such as retinol esters, retinol and retinaldehyde) need to first be converted into retinoic acid by our metabolic system in order to be effective. This conversion process can hamper the strength of the retinoid, meaning that although you might experience less irritation, it will inevitably take longer to see results, and the results themselves might not be all that impressive. For example, retinol esters need to be converted into retinol, then into retinaldehyde, and finally into retinoic acid before the skin cells can interpret them, meaning that although they’re great for those new to retinol, or for those with sensitive skins, they’re not going to pack much of an anti-ageing punch. The flip side is that with fewer conversion steps comes the increased risk of skin irritation, so whilst you might see more impressive results, chances are you will have experienced flaking, peeling, redness and other skin irritations along the way.

The benefit of HPR is that, because it’s directly related to retinoic acid, it doesn’t require conversion at all and binds directly to the retinoid receptors in your skin cells. And you need not worry about the unpleasant side effects, because the manufacturers have ensured that that the risk for irritation when using HPR is significantly reduced. In basic terms, you’re getting the efficacy of retinoic acid without the associated signs of irritation, and this makes sk.in flash one of the safest, and most effective, options on the market.

Professional treatments

I know I go on about my treatments with Sally at Cape Aesthetics an awful lot, but if you had seen the results that I had, you would do! I have an alternating monthly combination of medical-grade peels and Dermapen which effectively manage my pigmentation while having the added bonus of keeping my skin incredibly clear (thanks to the peels) and improving bounce and elasticity (that’s the Dermapen). Apart from my sun damage and melasma being much lighter, I have seen a remarkable improvement in the firmness of my skin which has been a very happy side-effect! I can’t recommend it enough – but be warned: this is not a miracle treatment. You can’t go in once expecting a new face in 10 days time. Don’t waste your time or your money if you’re unable to commit to the process long-term.

Daily sunscreen

There are two things I do on the daily which I believe have a meaningful effect on the success of my professional treatments: one of them is using SPF every day (and being religious about wearing a hat or a cap when I am in the sun) and layering antioxidants under my sunscreen (see next point). Discovering a number of “cosmetically elegant” sunscreens – new-generation formulations that sink in without leaving a sticky or greasy residue or disrupting makeup application – has made using SPF every day much less of a chore. My current highly-recommended favourites include:
Vichy UV Protect Anti-Shine Cream SPF 50
Bioré UV Aqua Rich Watery Essence SPF50+ (bought on Amazon, not available in SA that I know of)
Heliocare Silk Gel SPF 30 – I’m having a problem with this pilling on me at the moment which a lot of you seem to be experiencing as well. Preliminary findings suggest it works perfectly over a silicone-based water gel moisturiser but I’ll experiment a bit more and report back in full.

Antioxidants

Guys. Hear me when I say that antioxidants are a GAME CHANGER. These powerful little nutrients that we’ve been told to pack into our diets for improved immune function and cardiovascular health also happen to be a secret weapon in the fight against skin aging (should you choose to fight it at all!). I say “secret” because they aren’t the sort of thing you see fast results with – they are an investment product; a long-term exercise in self-love. Using a powerful, daily antioxidant serum will help to protect your skin from UVA damage (those are the really nasty rays that are responsible for skin cancer, nevermind photoaging) and the effects of pollution, maintain and improve skin firmness and brightness, and diminish and visibly soften the appearance of wrinkles. Why do you think Environ products work so well? Vitamin A (on which the entire range is based) is a powerhouse antioxidant.

Last year I used quite a few but the ones that stand out are SkinCeuticals CE Ferulic and Phloretin CF, The Ordinary 100% L-Ascorbic Acid Powder and Environ Vita-Enriched Antioxidant Gel.

Foreo Luna 2

This is one of a couple of 2018 skincare favourites that I share with Camilla and what a discovery it was! I’ll be honest: I was super skeptical about the Foreo when Dermastore approached us about featuring it, to the point that we nearly turned the job down. But when Dr Webster tells you something is worth the price tag, you don’t argue! I’ve been amazed by the results: 60-80 seconds of daily use on the cleansing setting (I don’t really use the anti-aging function) has undeniably improved my skin’s texture and tone, reduced blackheads and eliminated superficial breakouts. Apart from the odd under-the-skin hormonal monster on my chin, I haven’t had a spot since I started using it. One of the reasons I think it’s so easy to incorporate into my routine and remains in regular use is a) it only needs a minute of my time – time I’m already in the shower – and b) you only have to charge it every few months. If it was something you had to charge every day, it would languish next to a plug point in my bedroom, gathering dust. In all honesty, you don’t need the Luna 2 if you aren’t going to use the anti-aging function – save yourself a grand and get the Luna Mini 2 (which Camilla has) or the even-more-affordable Luna Go.

Microfibre face cloths

I first heard about the £1.50 Primark microfibre face cloth from Nadine Baggott who raved about its ability to not only remove makeup with nothing but water but to amp up the effectiveness of your cleanser. The secret is the friction created by the cloth itself – that’s what pulls makeup off your face and it’s also what helps to deep-clean your skin when you use it in conjunction with a cleanser. I bought a few when I was last in London and they’ve become a part of my everyday evening routine (I use them to remove the product from both my first and second cleanse) but there are lots of locally-available alternatives that work just as well. These include the Makeup Eraser (as far as I know, this was the original cloth which started the trend), WOW Jude Facial Cloth, Wonder Towel and the good old Addis Microfibre Dust Cloth! Apart from how practical they are, I’m amazed by how gentle they feel in comparison to a traditional cotton or muslin cloth. I’ll never go back.

Korean & Japanese skincare

I 100% blame the launch of Glow Theory at the beginning of last year for this! I fell down the rabbit hole pretty quickly and have been addicted to K- and J-Beauty ever since. I have long been fascinated with the routines and products used by our Far East Asian sisters but they were always so hard to get hold of in SA – until now! The main reason the Korean and Japanese approach to skincare is so appealing to me is because the main focus is hydration and clear, smooth-looking, “glass” skin. I basically can’t get enough hyaluronic acid so adding essence toners and juicy serums as well as gentle exfoliators and silky SPFs to my routine makes perfect sense to me.
