Bridging The Gap With A Little Grace

In the amazing journey that is the 'Fierce Fifty' and its outreach 'Bridge The Gap', I've had the opportunity to meet some incredible women whose tenets reach well beyond the fashion and social connections we all share.

One such woman is Jen Kinal immediately struck me as a pure, authentic soul with her optimism and 'live by it daily' mantra of happiness, love, acceptance and appreciation. I love it when my day is changed by something I consume and ladies, in this case, I do not mean coffee!

Jen offers a simple solution starter kit of sorts to keep ourselves grounded in positivity whenever the world throws something at us that ruins our day (often!) or pushes something on us we may not agree with (always!).

Here is a sampling of Jen's simple philosophy for HAPPINESS that provides a great foundation with which to start
your day:

Happiness
– Fake It Till You Make It – Even when you are feeling grouchy and negative, fake that you are having a great day and the happiness will follow.
– There Is Only Love – No matter what comes your way, look at it with love. Even if it is swirling with negativity, you will only see the positive.
– Acceptance – It’s time to be more accepting on myself. Stop being so hard on myself.
– Appreciation – I am so many blessings that I need to make sure to appreciate every single day.

Jen, thank you for your inspiration. No matter what our age, we need to practice your tenets of happiness, love, acceptance and appreciation.

Fascinating Facets on Mother's Day

On a bright, sunny Saturday morning before Mother's Day fun and festivity filled the air at Chico's on Montana. Stepping into the spacious boutique, in the shadow of the Aero Theaters iconic marquee the rainbow of kaleidoscopic fashion colors popped like swirled lollipops in a candy store (I'm not kidding!). Yum. Yes, ladies, we do have a sweet tooth for fashion . . . and jewelry!

I was invited by the wonderful Shannon Blaney and Debarah Hendrix to present my jewelry line at Chico's annual Mother's Day Pampering event where everyone goes home with a gift (Intuition Candles, Emma's Popcorn, Bundt Cakes) and helping portions of smiles, laughter and hugs are served as the main course.

Thanks to Debarah's wonderful heart and Chico's giving spirit, blessings of the shopping day were also bestowed upon wonderful women working their way back into the groove through the fabulous Bowen's Clothes Closet group. Bowens is a community outreach program that provides clothing for women who have lost everything.

The wide range of some 300 customers, by my estimation, enjoyed being pampered with gift-giveaways and modeling the latest Chico's styles in front of a plethora of mirrors. Fashion Blogger Glenda K. Harrison attended the event with her handsome son and purchased a gorgeous, casual dress that looked stunning on her. During the day, I was fortunate enough to meet actresses, comediannes, mentors, businesswomen, all very astute, savvy Chico's customers who know what a great find they have in the brand.

Personally, I have participated in retail jewelry and fashion events across the country, from New York to Omaha to Scottsdale to Los Angeles, during my two decades in fashion and can say that Chico's represents all of the 'community' assets of what retail should be -- a gathering place with delightful staff, moderate pricing, quality structured ensembles, a 'pay-it-forward' spirit AND a 'light' on the Montana Avenue shopping strand that makes Chico's feel like a fashion 'Disneyland' of sorts for those that love clothes, love trying clothes on and love engaging others in a celebratory, comfortable atmosphere. It's postcard perfect, in my opinion.

Thank you Shannon, Debarah and Chico's for the incredible invitation to be part of your special day -- you certainly made mine.

Beverly Hills Bridal Bliss

We've all heard the phrase 'bridal bliss' and have our own thoughts of what beauty and adventure it may define. I will tell you that, in all my experiences at bridal events, 'bridal bliss' was perfectly defined on Sunday at the stunning Cristophe Salon in Beverly Hills, just a block past Rodeo Drive within the famously-coined shopping district, "The Golden Triangle".

Hosted by the saintly Cristophe, his lovely wife Danielle and Kelly and Marie Gray, the powerhouse daughter-mother duo behind the Grayse line, the inaugural Boutique Bridal Expo spread its beautiful wings, taking flight for brides to see.

The sun-splashed, white-on-white Cristophe Salon shimmered like a bright welcome of a French Riviera afternoon, as models and stylists floated about amid luxe displays from the best names in bridal including Grayse, Cristophe, Margaret Rowe Couture Jewelry, Boisset Wines, Geary's, Choux Choux Event Planning, Cake Couture, Friar Tux Shop, Dermalogica, Best Bride, Elegant Music, David Medill Productions, TravelStore, Gloasis, Elegant Music, PawsDeluxe and Crash Entertainment. Publicist Christine Peake of Peake PR, used her many talents to choreograph the red carpet, models and photography, wonderfully shot by superstar celebrity photographer, Hamid Moslehi.

Cristophe, one of the most prominent figures in the hair care industry has a client roster that is a veritable Who's Who of Entertainment, with loyalists such as Nicole Kidman, Mick Jagger, Dustin Hoffman and Cameron Diaz, to name a few. Cristophe salons also grace Washington D.C., Newport Beach and St. Barth, serving as impromptu soirée and services spots for the world's powerful, including Hilary Clinton.

After an Expo preview period made especially for those preparing to walk down the aisle, Grayse treated the bridal attendees to a high octane fashion show catering to the mother-of-the-bride or the bride choosing to wear brilliant Grayse designs in ivory lace as her wedding day attire. The Grayse dresses and pant suits, each more stunning than the last, were a true feast for the eyes -- jeweled, shimmering works of art that gracefully drape the female form with an air of authority. Perfection without question. Every model was styled in a Margaret Rowe headpiece to compliment her gorgeous hair style created by the master stylists at Cristophe.

As I chatted the afternoon away with brides and exhibitors, stories abound. Wine ambassador, Loren Hoffman and his wife, having returned the night prior from the namesake Boisset Vineyards in the South of France, generously poured Rosé champagne to pair with delicious salmon caviar, compliments of Choux Choux Director of Events, Aleta Parrish.

The hand-made Grayse line was the hit of the collaborative afternoon. Each of the models, Marie, Kelly and Grayse Assistant Manager, Angela Coke were all visions in their perfectly crafted Grayse ensembles.

A Wonderful Day with Grayse

It's not everyday that I rise at 5AM for a fashion photo shoot in Palm Desert; but, to have the grand opportunity to style Marie and Kelly Gray's new clothing brand, Grayse, I was more than happy to rise at the crack of dawn with my jewelry collection in tow.

We left Santa Monica at 5:30AM after being greeted outside my studio by a caravan of black SUVs in the dark of night. Still flooded with a layer of fog, the morning felt as though we were on the set of 'Casablanca' and Humphrey Bogart was about to sachet by after whispering a long, romantic goodbye to Ingrid Bergman. The caravan consisted of my publicist and producer of the photo shoot, Christine Peake, Hamid Moslehi, who was Michael Jackson's personal photographer, and several crew members.

As we joined I-10 heading towards Palm Springs, passing downtown, the lights of the city dissipated as the sun started to creep up beyond the horizon, welcoming us with a beautiful glow that served as our positive astrological message to 'have a wonderful day'.

After an hour-plus of driving, we arrived in Palm Springs and headed straight to the first photo location in the desert to shoot Grayse's sky blue wedding collection for The Knot magazine. I styled the gorgeous dresses in my vintage couture jewelry collection and my new Diamontage™ simulated diamond jewelry collections. To enhance the looks, I designed a sky blue headpiece especially for the shoot that was created from vintage brooches from the 1940s. Another stand out piece was my vintage cigarette holder complete with baby blue sequins and beads from the 1950s -- the model held it as if it were here cell phone holder, of course. Several of the dresses were styled in chokers and classic earrings for a 'mother-of-the-bride' look, one of the primary audiences for Grayse.

We quickly piled back in the car for our next location which was Wally's restaurant, a Palm Springs landmark. Hamid shot the models while they enjoyed champagne at the bar. Christine and Kelly photo directed with great enthusiasm and expertise.

We then moved to a gorgeous, intimate sitting area replete with a full-size, colorful mural -- the perfect backdrop. The scene reminded me of the King Cole bar at the St. Regis in New York City and the photo shoot buzz was just as electric. Kelly gracefully placed the models perfectly to show her Collection at its best. This scene was definitely the 'money shot'. Kelly then sat with the models as the Grand Dame she is, posing in her famous look a la sunglasses!

As the day progressed, it was time for the charity fashion show at El Paseo, home to Grayse's Palm Desert store. Kelly placed an amazing statement chandelier in a large vacant space for the show that transformed the space to feel like a Cote d'Azur salon set amid the sparkle of the Mediterranean Sea. As I styled the beautiful model backstage in a variety of Margaret Rowe jewelry pieces, I was in awe of all that we had accomplished in just a few hours.

The tremendous accomplishment was the result of a very professional crew, a wonderful brand in Grayse and true genius encapsulated in the personas of Kelly Gray, Marie Gray and Christine Peake. Thank you ladies! Margaret Rowe Couture Jewelry was proud to be a part of a perfect day.

The Best Girlfriends in Fashion

It's Spring fashion season and time to inquire where we can add fun favorites to our collections.

Where can you shop at a store that feels like home? Where can you find a staff, each attired in brilliant styles and smiles, to act as your personal, head-to-toe couturiers? Where will you always meet your 'new best friend'? And, where can you leave with an armful of bags that won't break your pocketbook?

Well ladies, at Chico's, of course!

To celebrate our favorite, go-to brand for fun, fashion-forward finds, Chico's held its First Annual Best Friends Fashion Event at its store on the famed Montana Avenue street in Santa Monica March 23rd. I was honored to be invited to guest host the event alongside The Fierce 50 Founder and Blogger Catherine Grace O'Connell, to meet, style and inspire Chico's customers at one of their most popular Los Angeles locations along trendy Montana Avenue.

Stepping into the store at 2PM sharp, I immediately felt at ease in the wonderfully, well-organized space, as I was warmly greeted by store manager, Shannon Blaney and sales associates Debbie, Deborah, Fernie, Gary and Mileta. I was fortunate enough to engage Chico's District Sales Manager, Teri Coffey, who manages thirteen Chico's stores.

After well wishes and hugs with the staff, I marveled at the kaleidoscope of ensemble hues in the store -- from blues to beiges to spring colors to contrasting black and whites -- my heart rate began to quicken! Not only were my senses piqued by the colors in the store, but the prints, geometrics (I love to call geometrics 'deco') and a plethora of blouse styles in lace -- ah, beautiful, feminine lace -- sent me into overdrive mix and match mode.

During the three-hour event, it was such a pleasure to meet a variety of loyal Chico's customers. The brand addresses a very large demographic base of baby boomer customers with a wide range of stylish looks seen in younger brands. Due to the one-stop nature of the Chico's shopping experience AND the very personal one-on-one styling appointment with in-store staff, the brand has built a tremendously loyal customer base that demands quality, beauty and on-trend in their clothing but prefer a no-fuss, 'red carpet' shopping experience. I've done many Hollywood award show red carpets in my styling career here in Los Angeles and can assure you that Chico's has certainly delivered on its promises as many customers ONLY wear Chico's and default to the brand for everything in their closet.

During the event, Catherine and I made several styling changes and posed for photos -- some taken using the store's wonderful full-lengths mirrors.

Ladies, the beauty of Chico's events is they feel like you're in your living room, sharing laughs with your best girlfriends (yes, that is the main idea for these Chico's events!). The casual nature of the events gives you time to meet and engage Chico's clientele and personable staff via stimulating conversation on the brand and how it's leveraged for many opportunities. One of the Chico's staff 'besties' I was able to make during the event was Deborah who shared her plans with me for what sounds like a wonderful Mother's Day extravaganza in-store. During our chat, Deborah also told me that Chico's goal is to be part of the fabric of the community and, to deliver on that goal, they organize style events for women who may have had some difficulties in life to help give them a fresh start, support their journey and a deliver a great boost in self-esteem. Hearing this 'off-retail' story, truly impressed me -- here we have a major brand in a for-profit business, who implicitly understands the 'Pay It Forward' philosophy of life that helps make our culture, communities and country that

much better each day. Bravo Chico's!!

For this special event I wore Chico's Striped Woven Shirt with the Microfiber Contemporary Tank and Platinum Ankle Jeans. I also enjoyed trying on the So Slimming Girlfriend Crop in Rio Destroy Indigo. The look was topped off with Chico's Kevin Fedora and Pearl Girlfriend Bracelet.

The Awards Season in Los Angeles culminates with the Oscars. I always enjoy creating style on the red carpet of the Academy Awards. It's my 10th season of styling for this international awards show that has billions of viewers throughout the world. I am delighted to be a part of a new international women's fashion blogger group ~ 'The Fierce 50'. It's a fashion group inspired by female bloggers who share similar interests at a similar point in life. My blogging partner is Kimberly Frick, born and raised in Chicago.

I would like to introduce Kimberly to you, translated from her beautiful words:

Kimberly had a great childhood and is the second of five kids. She married at 21, is the very proud mother of three great children and has been married to her husband for 38 years.

Kimberly has loved fashion forever (as she says "Seriously, forever!"), which goes hand-in-hand with her love all beautiful things AND her love of attending art exhibits, stores, museums and antique stores -- anywhere to find inspiration.

A fashion role model and hero of Kimberly's was Halston and her favorite active designers are Michael Kors and Diane Von Furstenburg, who create in a '70s-style that she loves.

Kimberly has moved and created a new 'home' for her family six times since being married, inclusive of five separate states, having settled in Texas now for 20 years. She has discovered that each state in which she's lived has had a different style of dress and 'fashion sense'.

Each move for Kimberly has been a big challenge from the aspects of trying to keep her children grounded and being far away from family, with which she's very close. Kimberly's husband suffers from a degenerative disease through which she has helped him persevere during their marriage. Together, they have been through many serious medical issues, the deaths of parents, moves and watching children grow up and create lives for themselves. Through it all, Kimberly's greatest loves in life are her family and her husband (who, of course, supports her love of fashion and beauty!).

Kimberly worked in and is now retired from styling in the retail sector, a job she recollects as "a wonderful job" that enabled her to make many friends through her work. After she retired, her many clients missed having someone of her age to help them in the store and asked her to stay in touch. This sparked the concept of Kimberly's blog and Instagram page -- the easiest way to reach her many clients and many more women 'of a certain age'. Through her blog, Kimberly hopes to inspire and be inspired by women of all ages, as she feels she has so much to learn in terms of social media. She is up to the challenge, looks forward to all that is to come and is excited about making new friends with similar aspirations.

Kimberly's hope and dream in participating in The Fierce Fifty campaign is to raise awareness of the over-50 demographic in the market place. She feels the over-50 demo is important as it consists of women who wish to be respected at a wonderful time in life, with many valuable things to offer. Kimberly's vision would be to see 'real' over-50 women representing the demographic in all media, not just age appropriate models posted here and there.

When The Style Collective Sisters get together, it’s a treat. And, when they get together for a festive Valentine’s celebration in the South Bay, they head straight to The Shade Hotel, Redondo Beach. Located in the beautiful Redondo Beach marina, there’s no more perfect venue to toast your Style Collective sisters in high style. Set along the waterfront, this brand new property captures the essence of the South bay vibe. Relaxed and family friendly, this is one hotel that has perfected the customer service experience.
Greeting us with a warm welcome and a sparkling champagne toast, the staff at The Shade embodies the essence of hospitality. My favorite restaurant, The Sea Level, offers both waterfront dining or a casual bar with views of the marina. Light, bright and cozy, The Sea Level bar is a great place for a casual evening. The new hotel is the sister hotel to Shade Manhattan Beach, which is a mainstay with it’s lovely cocktail bar and outdoor patio.

In true fashion blogger style, The SC Sisters were decked out in various shades of red, pink and white and on a mission to celebrate Valentine’s Day with a splash. The Shade made us feel so welcome and pampered us with a delicious dining experience overlooking the scenic waterfront. The Sea Level Restaurant is filled with comfy sofas and fire pits and it wasn’t long before the sofas were overflowing with colorful fashion bloggers excitedly chattering away. Serving up the crispiest, mouth watering pizza loaded with carmelized onions and the tastiest goat cheese, the women were definitely enjoying the treats along with the atmosphere. Alongside, our waiters brought out the freshest beet salad with arugula pesto and toasted pistachios to top it off. The piece de resistance was a tasty citrus cured hamachi with one of the most beautiful presentations in town. We laughed and we toasted as we began forming new connections, sharing our fashion blogging and life journeys together.

It wouldn’t be a fashion blogging event without raffle prizes and goodie bags filled with treasures. My darling sidekick and partner in organizing the event, Jessica @petitestylescript and the creator of www.petitestylescript.com, made sure we were taken care of with lots of sponsored treasures. Jessica is a big fan of Dermalogica and won us all over with gifts of their daily superfoliant. As I’m all about healthy aging naturally, I was delighted the superfoliant was just what I needed. Core Water provided the natural refreshments with their classic water as well as several fruit flavored varieties. Core is known for it’s high quality reverse osmosis process which helps to balance the alkalinity in our bodies. The precious centerpieces were handmade for us by a fabulous company called, Lette Macarons. These special trees were made of the lightest and tastiest macaroons I’ve ever tried. In the most vivid colors representative of the holiday, they definitely set the tone for a festive afternoon. Beautifully done, Lette Macarons is quite the experience. Each tasty creation is hand made with tender loving care. These special cookies will delight your taste buds as each design has it’s own unique flavor and personality. Rounding out the gift bags was a gift from Bloomingdale’s and the Kiehl’s counter. Fond of natural products, Kiehl’s has been a leader in the field with products that help you to look and feel beautiful in the most natural way possible. Balloon Celebrations delivered an enormous truckload of balloons. Sarah, the perky delivery woman, bounced out of the van proceeding to tell us how much she loves her job! As balloons always lift the spirits, we were in agreement as we helped her set up the massive balloon decorations. Balloon Celebrations went out of their way to ensure the event was a success by setting a lively and fun vibe. They even created a special balloon design as a gift for our celebration!

Debbie Savage, one of the SC sisters and the creator of @tothineownstylebetrue brought along some awesome raffle prizes donated by GuiltySoles.com. Guilty Soles is known for fabulous trendy shoes at ridiculously affordable prices. From over the knee boots, to sassy kicks and strappy sandals, Guilty Soles will have you stepping out in style without parting with your wallet. The company kindly donated several pair of shoes for the raffle and gifted every blogger a $30 gift card to use on their site. There’s no easier way to win over a fashion blogger’s heart than with a new pair of shoes!

The Shade’s philosophy permeates the hotel with it’s desire to restore and rejuvenate you. We had a blast as the balloons set the tone for the day, delightfully uplifting everyone’s spirits.

I’m pretty sure I’m speaking for the South Cal Style Collective sisters when I say that joining Annie Spano and The Style Collective is one of the best decisions I have ever made. As #GirlBosses, we’ve developed a bond like no other united in bringing beauty to the world and to one another. Fashion is a powerful medium and we are delighted to be on this journey together. Women of all ages are always welcomed with open arms.

LightBox Productions' ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Movie #1 At The Box-Office Six Years After Comic-Con Handshake

The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie that is #1 at the box office this weekend had humble, grass roots development beginnings at Comic-Con 2008 in the hands of two comic book film fans (and first-time film producers) and a Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle-loving producer.

Fortuitous events at San Diego’s Comic-Con 2008 introduced Turtles Executive Producer Napoleon Smith III and Santa Monica-based Producer Bret Rowe to producer Galen Walker, who sensed an opportunity to acquire feature film rights for the Turtles’ franchise after its 2007 animated feature ‘TMNT’ was released by Imagi Studios. During a three-hour creative summit, the trio set the plan to acquire Turtles’ film rights, shook hands in agreement and set their plan in motion.

“At the time, Galen, Bret and I felt that TMNT was undervalued,” says Smith. “Here we were, living in the day and age of comic book movies and Turtles had no one behind it. People thought Turtles was done, finished. We were willing to bet otherwise,” he adds.

Rowe worked financial models and sought investors. A fourth Lightboxer, Marc Pappalardo, handled corporate structure and legal. Smith and Walker would take the team’s strategy and vision to Peter Laird for his blessing. “A tremendous opportunity to secure film rights for a global franchise was upon us and it was a ‘no-fail’ proposition,” comments Rowe. “Superman, Spiderman, Batman rebrand at the box office all the time for new generations. We had to get Peter Laird to believe Turtles had the brand power to do the same perpetually but, more importantly, we had to prove to him that we had the talented people that could execute.”

According to Smith, LightBox members assumed and completed tasks without question and positive things started to happen. “Galen brought on ‘300’ producer Scott Mednick. Our investor (fifth Lightboxer Eric Crown) approved of the deal, the franchise and its global movie and merchandise potential. Peter approved of our investor, our producing team and our strategy. We weren’t a studio but we had to provide the acumen and financial resources of a studio in order to develop the movie to Peter’s and our high standards and passion for the franchise,” he adds.

A mere ‘David’ in a world of Goliath studios and comic book franchises, LightBox Productions, acquired the feature film rights for the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (TMNT) property in early 2009 with Laird’s blessing.

“After a year,” says Rowe, “magically, everyone agreed and our six-man LightBox team obtained the TMNT feature film rights. We then set our sights on making our Turtles movie in tandem with Peter and Mirage (Studios),” he closes.

LightBox commenced development and script work on its Turtles movie in spring/summer 2009 before Viacom’s outright purchase of the Turtles franchise from Laird’s Mirage Studios in October 2009 initiated an offer from Paramount Pictures for LightBox’s TMNT film rights. Paramount acquired the TMNT feature film rights from LightBox in October 2009.

The storybook Hollywood blockbuster ending for LightBox occurred when Paramount Pictures appointed Michael Bay and his Platinum Dunes juggernaut with producing the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles picture as a Megan Fox starring vehicle under Jonathan Liebesman direction. “The Michael Bay and Megan Fox announcements were definitely head spinning for all of us,” says Rowe.

“In the end, Peter did not care if I had ever produced a movie,” pauses Smith, “he cared that we had the same belief in the Turtles that he did. The belief that it’s high time for the Turtles to be reborn for a new generation to enjoy. You can see that belief in what we at LightBox have accomplished to get to this point and in what Paramount, Platinum Dunes, Nickelodeon and Jonathan have created with the new Turtles movie,” he closed.

Along the way, were palm readers, humorous trolls, beautiful fairies and amazing magicians -- all on a magical night in Hollywood for Disney's Maleficent world premiere.

HSN, true to its world-class form, was front and center on the Maleficent sapphire carpet, wrapping its stunning models in jewelry evoking the feeling of all things Maleficent (and that of Margaret Rowe!) on shining platforms that showcased its partnership with Disney perfectly. Disney, using its brilliant formula for creative wonderment, put on an amazing evening and served up Angelina Jolie and Elle Fanning on the sapphire carpet as a fitting finale.

I was spell bound by the magic dust these two corporate giants created to present Maleficent's world premiere. Sharing special moments with Actors James Haven, Sarah Highland of ABC's Modern Family, Ashley Samuels and HSN's Fashion Director Brandi McClain and HSN Host Carrie Smith made the evening more special.

Maleficent premieres worldwide on May 30th and will be a global success if this evening of fun and fantasy shows what is to come. For me the evening was a true fashion fairytale.

There are the SAG Awards, the Writer's Guild Awards and, of course, Director & Producer Guild Awards. Awards abound in film this time of year. But, what about the people who rise at 2AM? Who are on set before everyone to put the ace in face and take the scare out of hair? Of course, I'm speaking of the Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylist Guild Awards celebrating 2013's most outstanding work for make-up and hair artistry in film television, commercials, theater and miniseries or movies made for television.

The award, known as an 'Artisan' (i.e the SAGs have an 'Actor' statuette) went to those fortunate few who perform everything from A to Z -- making Angelina look even better to creating crawling flesh for the Zombies of 'The Walking Dead'.

Johnny Depp was given the first Distinguished Artisan Award for his collaborative efforts with make-up and hair stylists creating memorable characters from Edward Sissorhands to Captain Jack Sparrow.

My husband Bret and I were guests of Producer Lanie Strauss, who wore Margaret Rowe Jewelry and produced the event on the beautiful Paramount lot and what a great night it was. These are the people that make it happen being praised by the people you know are happening -- Johnny Depp, Benecio del Toro, Jane Lynch, Ed Asner, Johnny Knoxville, Oscar-nominee June Squibb, Emma Roberts, Tippi Hedren. What a great, great night for a very talented group of inspiring people.
