This article is Part II in a series entitled Frisbee Dog 101, by guest writer Chris Engel. Today Chris will share his thoughts on selecting a dog for Frisbee training. If you missed Part I, you can read it at Frisbee Dog 101 .

As I mentioned before, ANY dog will do as a disc dog, but there may be some things to think about, such as ... You really don't want a dog that is too big. Bandit is 50 pounds and while he can run really fast and jumps really well I don't think I really want him jumping off me because he would gain too much height and velocity to land safely. He might just take me out if he hit me at full speed. Each person has their own comfort zone, but for me an athletic dog around 20 to 30 pounds does quite nicely.

Also, a dog that enjoys leaping and does it for fun is going to make things much easier when you are trying to channel that energy into a controlled sequence that includes some leaps. Herding dogs do rather well, but again ... I really must stress ANY dog will do, so don't get caught up with having to find a specific breed because you think or have heard they are better than others.

If you select a puppy make sure you do not do ANY leaping or vaulting training until your puppy is , at the very least, 12 months--and preferably 15 months--of age. Let your puppy's bones grow enough so that you will not do any harm to him by asking him to perform stressful athletics before his body is ready for it.

If you just have to get started immediately, I suggest you find a dog that is old enough and ready to start learning with you. There are TONS of rescue organizations out there, so choose one locally and tell them what you are looking for. They already have a lot of experience, so USE IT !!!!! You don't have to pick the first dog ... just pick the right dog! Doing some homework and reading up on the types of dogs and their general charateristics will help a lot as well.

What Shall I Teach Oliver Next?

One reader put it quite well. She emailed me to 'hint' that her dog needs help. Yet it was obvious that she does not know how to put it into words. Her 'Rover' has received no professional training and has developed some rather unacceptable habits--more than his owner could list!

This email got me to thinking. Perhaps I could offer a range of topics you might enjoy a short course in, compliments of our new ASK THE TRAINER Columnist, Judith Joseph. If putting your dog's problems into words is a challenge, this may be your answer.

Realizing that all dog training involves the owner as much, if not more than, the dog, you will need to ask yourself if you're ready to commit to Rover's education with brief, regular practice sessions every day. If the answer is yes, then here's your solution.

I'll place a training poll just above this article in the blog. It will remain there for a while, hopefully long enough for you to determine what you want to check off on the list. If you need help with more than one or two items, feel free to check as many as you feel are appropriate.

The poll's results will allow our ASK THE TRAINER columnist, Judy, to assess the most important needs of our readers. She will be able to use your poll input to fashion some mini classes online. In short, these will include a step-by-step approach to teaching your dog a single skill or behavior. Remember, practice makes perfect.

Of course, you must realize that online dog classes can only do so much. If you need personal attention for serious problems, you'll need to contact Judy for a consultation to determine Rover's needs. We finally did it; we got ourselves a trainer! I'm so excited for us all. I get letters from readers about twice a week, asking questions about training. While I've had a degree of experiences, I'm not a qualified trainer, so I take on only those questions where I feel I can honestly be helpful.

Now things will be different. I'll be publishing your questions with the answers of a certified dog obedience instructor. I am thrilled to introduce her to you today. Her name is Judith Joseph; she and her 6 dogs live and work in Kissimmee, where she owns Total Control Dog Owner Assistance (TCDOA).

So, you may ask, "What is so special about Judy? There are dozens, if not hundreds of dog trainers out there."

I love her philosophy: TCDOA training takes your lifestyle seriously and develops a training strategy especially for you and your dog. No cookie cutter training that you cannot implement in your own home.

Of course, in her column, Judy's knowledge of your lifestyle and environment will be limited. The more you can describe this in your letter, the better able she will be to help you. Here's my tips for success:

Describe your dog: size, breed/mix, age, activities, exercise routine (frequency, time and activity), issues, where he spends his "down" time, activity level, other dogs in your home, socialization, and how much time he spends alone each day.
Give Judy a bit of background on your dog's previous training and your philosophies about your dog and how you would like your relationship with him to be. Does he sleep in a crate? Or in your bed? Is he your dog or your child? What level of perfection are you seeking?
Now ask your question and restate it in a goal. This will help Judy target her answer, as much as possible, to you, while still offering helpful information to other readers.
If you would like them included in your answer, send photos of your dog along with his name. No humans, please.
Include the words ASK THE TRAINER in the subject line, when you email your question to us at LetsAdoptaDogPark@gmail.com.

What can one person do to make a difference? Here's a start:

Visit Adopt a Dog Park for information, ideas, and to learn how you can officially Adopt your own favorite park.
Write to LetsAdoptaDogPark@gmail.com to name the park you wish to adopt and provide your name, and email. Your privacy will be protected. Your name will be listed on the site, only IF YOU WISH. Feel free to include photos of your dog (no people please) playing at your adopted park. By sending these photos to us at LetsAdoptaDogPark@gmail.com, you agree to allow them to be posted on Adopt a Dog Park or All Things Dog Blog. Don't forget to tell us your furry friend's name!
Walk your entire dog park every time you visit, picking up trash, broken toys, and doggie landmines for the trash. Our government funding for public parks is dwindling, so we need to step up to make the difference. Other dog owners will notice your efforts and often follow suit, so set the example and your job will get easier.
Train and socialize your dog properly before taking him to a dog park. For his protection, be sure he is old enough, and has had all his shots before entering. Dog parks are not an appropriate venue for shy or fearful dogs. Your veterinarian can tell you when the time is right.
Be a vigilant owner. Keep an eye on your dog and his behavior, as well as other dog's attitude toward yours. Be his advocate when needed.
Remember to check the rules for your park. Most suggest you do not bring in treats or other food. This is for your own protection, as some dogs may be food aggressive.
If you choose to bring toys to the dog park, be prepared to part with them, or have them destroyed. An entire park full of dogs playing with your rubber duckie will mean certain death, so just be aware of this likelihood.
Train your dog to "leave it", in order to retrieve another owner's toy from him, when necessary.
Finally, you can keep you and your dog out of harm's way if you follow two very important dog park rules: (1) Mastering the COME command is essential to bring your dog to your side when a scuffle breaks out. You don't want your dog checking out the argument. (2) Know how to properly break up a dog fight: NEVER try to grasp a dog's collar, as your hand will be in danger of getting nipped. Grab your dog by the hips with one hand on each side. Pull him backwards away from the other dog until you are well clear of the problem. Sit/Stay your dog until he is completely relaxed and not paying attention to the other dog. Maintain a calm,in-control, attitude that will hopefully rub off on your dog. Do not allow yourself to become anxious or fretful. This WILL be soaked up by Fido, and will not help the situation at all. If relaxation does not occur, it is definitely time to go home.

Bandit Catches a Frisbee

Please welcome guest writer Chris Engel, a Frisbee dog competitor with Team-Bandit out of Leesburg, Florida. Chris’s dog Bandit has quite an extensive bio, which you can find at this link. He and his newest addition, Kota, participate in disc dog competitions, demonstrations and fundraisers all over the country. Here’s Chris:

So you've seen the Youtube videos and maybe caught a glimpse of those amazing dogs on TV at the Incredible Dog Challenge, and thought ... "Man! Wouldn't it be neat if I could get Spot to do that !!!" Well that's what I thought anyway and I didn't even have a DOG back then. Little did I know that would all change one day when I got Bandit.

In fact, I had completely forgotten about Frisbee dogs and was just looking for a good dog for my wife and myself. I've learned a boatload about dogs and thought this might be a good time to share some of that knowledge with anyone who might be looking for a dog or who wants to get their dog into playing Frisbee.

First and foremost, it should be mentioned that ANY dog can be a great Frisbee dog. Many of the dogs that win National championships in all of the competitive formats are from shelters just like the one in your community. Many of them end up there because they have too much energy or are too hyper for their owners to handle. This is exactly the type of characteristic that can turn a rescue into a superstar. Every dog has a superstar in him ... some just don't need to be coaxed into showing it.

What most people do not realize when they have this type of dog is that with just a little time and energy on their part they can give their dog the job he needs so when it's time for ‘down time’ in the house, he'll be good and he'll know when to turn it on for a performance. By teaching your dog that the Frisbee is it's job, he'll have a sense of purpose in the pack and be a much better behaved dog because of it.

I have also found that Frisbee dog training helps me when I'm having a tough day. My dogs and I work hard and focus on the task at hand, and this in turn means I am not focusing on whatever brought me down in the first place.

Jacque Models his Red Sweater

Dear Dr. Jacki:

Are there any fabrics I should avoid when I buy my little dog a sweater or jacket?

We have had a lot of cold and I would like to get him something to wear when he goes outside in the early morning. He shivers and sometimes doesn't want to do his duty in the grass. He just wants to come inside. Then we have an oopsie!

Dear Reader:

There are no particular fabrics to avoid when buying a sweater or jacket for your pet. I would be sure that it fits correctly and that it is not too tight or loose. Typically dogs do not like the feel of cold or wet ground on their feet so this may be part of the issue as well. If you could clear a space for him to go potty outside then this may make him more comfortable. Good luck!!

Max Can't Wait
to Meet our New Trainer!

This place is certainly a whirlwind of activity right now. I'm getting offers to place ads, litters of puppies that need homes, guest post offers and lots of folks looking for promo on my dog-friendly site. My loyalty, however, is to you guys--my readers. I have not forgotten that you asked, in my poll last summer, for an ASK THE TRAINER column.

Pardon my delay, but please understand that Oliver and I have been busy sniffing out the right trainer to suit our family-friendly focus.

I'll have more to say in an upcoming post, but for now, I just want you to know that this plan is in the 'hopper'. Robby, our family's rabbit, helped just a little with that last comment. He's such a ham!

What will you love about our new trainer? She has a delightful approach. No stiff rules about what a dog can or cannot do at your home. Her philosophy is that YOU, and only you, should make the decision whether Rover sleeps on the couch, the floor, your bed, his own bed, or in a crate--at least once he is fully house trained and well-behaved.

Keep an eye out for your new trainer's introduction. I'll be publishing it very soon. Meanwhile, start jotting down your trainer questions. I know you will have a few, as I have received emails from a good many of you with questions about training. It is a great feeling to know that now your answers will come from someone with proper credentials. Happy tails!

ASK THE VET: Solutions for Dogs that Eat Pet Droppings

Dear Ask the Vet:

My dog likes to eat poop. Not just dog poop, but any poop. She eats her own, the other dogs' poop, and even cat poop from our cat's litter box. I have to keep her out of there or she will feast on the stuff. Yuck!

Why does my dog seem to be drawn to eating poop? And what can I do to stop her? My vet tried some type of pill to make her own poop taste bad, but she actually learned to like the taste and did not stop trying to eat it. When she is on leash, this is not a problem, but at the dog park or in a fenced yard I cannot always control this. I have to constantly watch her and the ground for landmines. Any tips?

Hi Amy:

This is a tough situation…..and a common one. For starters…don't let your dog near the cat box. Cat stool basically tastes like cat food and it is very high in fat and will cause a very sore belly. That is not even considering the litter that is ingested along with the cat stool.

You may want to try Adolf's meat tenderizer. Sprinkle this on your dog's food and see if it helps. For some reason, some dogs don't like the taste of the stool once they have eaten the meat tenderizer. This suggestion will not be able to help when it comes to other dog's stool.

I would try using positive reinforcement when you are at the dog park…i.e. when you see your dog attempting to eat another dog's landmine, maybe you call his name and give a treat as a reward for leaving it alone. It is a bad habit but does not mean that he is missing something from his diet. Hope that helps!!

All Ready for Mardi Gras!

Please congratulate Molly, All Things Dog Blog's FETCHING FIDO photo contest runner up. Molly narrowly edged out her two closest competitors, according to my judge, a gracious vet tech who agreed to make the big decision for me.

According to Molly's owner, "she is social, adores kids, enjoys car rides, loves food and chewers, swimming, walks, doggie day care and family fun. More importantly, Molly provides her family with love, affection and companionship!"

Molly just happens to be a good friend of Tanner, my Golden Retriever, as they enjoy romping at the same doggie daycare, when mom and dad are on the run. Bow Wow Resort, located on Highway 436 in Apopka, Florida, is a delightful place for our dogs to spend a social day of play. With a regular group of day camp playmates, Molly and Tanner enjoy their outdoor playground and splash pool, as well as their naptime in private sleeping quarters. We're big fans and want to make sure we keep Bow Wow Resort going strong!

Good morning All Things Dog Blog readers, and welcome to the announcement of our Fetching Fido photo winner. Isn't she adorable? According to mom, "Juliet had a joyous time making mischief with the toilet paper", as she streamed it across the floor and back, emptying the roll. She certainly is creative in her playtime adventures.

Juliet's prize for winning 1st place in the photo contest will be delivered to her owner shortly. She is receiving a $10 Petco Gift Certificate to spend on whatever her little heart desires. (Treats, Mom, Treats! Pleeeze buy the organic ones that Oliver likes)

Juliet's mom shared the following story about a typical day:

"I take Juliet for a morning walk and she gets her breakfast in a

puzzle block or kong. That gives her some mental stimulation. The

neighbor next door has a young ShiTzu and we've made an arrangement to

let the poochies out each day around 3 when her kids get home from

school. "Tebow" and Juliet have a ball running as fast as they can,

bouncing off each other, jumping and leaping and playing for about 40

minutes. They run until they can't breathe! Both of them drop to the

grass and just lay there, panting! We've both noticed that our

doggies are having a better afternoon after that strenuous play time."

Trainer Demonstrates Targeting

I've been getting a good many letters asking for help with training issues. Sometimes I try to assist, but this letter was a bit more challenging. I've asked Judith Joseph, of TOTAL CONTROL DOG OWNER ASSISTANCE, to assist with her suggestions. Following is the reader's question, and Judy's answer:

Dear "Trainer":

My little Pomeranian is hardly the lap dog I envisioned when I got him. He prefers to remain on his own four feet, and backs away when I approach to pick him up, often running away from me. I am generally able to corner him, but I'd like to find a way to train him to allow me to approach, or to come.

"Come" used to be a command he was good at. Since he does not enjoy being picked up, he now avoids coming to me when I call, unless I wave a treat. He is very food motivated; however, I cannot always give him a treat for coming to me. Any suggestions on techniques for working with this issue? My goal is to teach him to come when I call, allow me to touch him, and not require a treat to do this, once he is trained. I need him to allow me to approach him without running away.

Dear Reader:

“My dog doesn’t come when called…” is a common complaint of dog owners. Since your Pom has a negative association with the command “Come”, I suggest you stop using it. And, because he runs away as you approach, don’t chase or corner him. Instead, try ‘targeting’ as a means of teaching him to come to you.

I use target training to teach recall (a term meaning dog returns to your side) on dogs of all ages, especially those that are shy or fearful. Using my hand as a target, I condition dogs to touch my palm with their nose and in exchange, receive a treat. Conditioning dogs to target usually takes one day of consistent repetitions.

Things to remember before training:

Train before meals; never after.
Find a quiet place indoors; just you and the dog.
Practice for 3-5 minutes no less than 3 times a day.
Use small and soft treats (warmed hot dogs, pieces of cheese).

Training involves me sitting quietly holding a treat in my open palm allowing the dog to come to me of his own will. I repeatedly offer treats placing them one by one on my open palm which his nose will touch as he takes the treat. Next, I extend my open palm with no treat and wait for him to touch it (he should touch it as he sniffs for a treat). I say the word “hand” with every touch and offer him a treat from my other hand. I repeat this about 15 times. To end training I get up and walk away. I repeat the training every 3 - 4 hours, no less than 3 times a day for about 3 minutes. By the end of the second day most dogs understand that the word “hand” means touching my palm gets them a treat. I never reach for, or try to pick up the dog. I just want him to come to my hand.

After a several days of successful targeting, I attach a 6 foot lead and begin practicing outdoors in a quiet area with few distractions. I call him to “hand” when he reaches the end of his lead, treating and praising him when he touches my hand. As outdoor recalls become more reliable, I lengthen the lead to about 16 feet, and slowly add distractions.

After a couple weeks target training with no attempts to pick up or corner your Pom, he should begin to come to you whenever you command “hand”. Alternate treats with generous praise.

If your dog is really shy and won’t come to you on his own, toss a few treats close to him, then closer to you to lure him in. Your first goal is to get him to pick up treats dropped at your feet. Proceed slowly and be patient.

I'm going to let the cat out of the bag, here. I've been on the hunt for a trainer to write a column of the ASK THE TRAINER sort. After watching, reading, and communicating with quite a few, one has surfaced with the desire, drive, care and compassion that I want for my readers and their dogs.

I also like her approach: How your dog is to behave is entirely up to you; it is your home. Isn't that a respectable way to raise a dog? To allow the owner to decide if their dog is allowed on the couch, sleeps on the floor, or becomes a lap dog--it's all up to you. She's not a cookie cutter trainer; that's for sure. Many would insist that the dog remains on the floor at all times...period. Oliver would not care for that approach.

So we're going to let this trainer give us a trial run. After all, I'm such a slave driver that she ought to have a chance to work with me before she "signs on the dotted line." Just kidding of course. I'm not really a slave driver!

I hope you'll watch the blog closely for her post. I anticipate it will arrive sometime in the near future, and I'll be eager to see if I can pull this off without going bonkers. I'm going to enjoy the challenge of juggling my own posts with Dr. Jacki's and the trainer's; I hope you do too.

Ziggy is Ready to Begin Training

Hello, and welcome back to my favorite place to rattle about dog stuff. A while back when I ran a poll asking you, my readers, what you'd like to see on this blog, I got some of the input I anticipated. The top 2 requests were for columns such as Ask the Trainer and Ask the Vet.

You asked for it, and I'm working on it. Dr. Jacki has been on board since last Fall, answering all sorts of interesting dog health questions. Your letters and comments have been very encouraging to me. By the way, if you would like to look up her posts, they are all listed with links at ASK THE VET ARCHIVES. Thanks for participating.

Just this week I have had good discussions with a trainer who is interested in doing the same type of column here on All Things Dog Blog. We'll be running a post tomorrow, in which she will answer a question that one of you sent to me. Quite honestly, it's one of those training questions that I was not positive how to handle. I'm glad to find a professional who is willing to take it on.

Tanner Models his Homemade Bandage

Poor Tanner has been struggling to heal a wound under his jaw since before the holidays. He has spent more than his share of time in an E-collar, those anti-scratch, anti-itch lampshade-looking things that require an active pup like Tanner to be a little less active.

Because the e-collar must fit snugly around the neck, this was impeding air flow around the wound, and thereby slowing the healing process. I had to get more creative, if we were to meet with success.

Since Tanner is not one to scratch and itch at every little thing, I figured the location of this wound would work to my advantage. So, with the goal of healing in mind, I set out to come up with a bandage that wouldn't annoy him and wouldn't impede activity or air flow.

Tanner is wearing his neckerchief above, made of cotton fabric, so it breathes well. Notice that it is wide, so as to cover the wound completely, just in case he decides to scratch the area. Also, I tied it just tight enough that it stays above his collar, assuring that it does not slip down off of the area we're trying to keep covered.

Tanner's Bandage ties like a Bandanna

Tanner is delighted to be free of the e-collar, and doesn't mind the bandage at all. So far, he isn't even aware of anything different, as he has often worn banannas and is quite used to them.

Best of all, this solution will allow him to play at the dog park and practice agility safely, all the while still keeping his tender spot covered and safe from scratching. Tanner's reward? He got to play F-E-T-C-H (I have to spell it or he goes crazy!) at the dog park. He's sleeping soundly now, probably dreaming of tennis balls. Good boy, Tanner!

Facebook Users Love Dogbook

Social networks for dog lovers have been popping up all over the Internet. They each have their own twist. Facebook's version will likely have many of the others chasing their tail. Dogbook, which FYI was not developed by Facebook, but is now an integrated application there, seems to be striving for the whole package offered by Facebook. At the Dogbook application, your dog can create a profile, download photos, search for dog parks, or even "friend" his doggie buddies from the neighborhood, dogpark or his doggie daycare pals. Dogbook is also available on the IPhone, allowing Iphone's users and their dogs to keep up with their pack while on the go.

Dogbook is just shy of 1 million users, and has roughly 40,000 fans. That's not mere kibble, but rather a signal that dog lovers mean business for Facebook and its growing advertising base. Dogbook's pages also allow you to shop for products and discuss their pros and cons with other like minded folks.

So, what else is in it for you, the dog owner? I can see many advantages to getting involved with Dogbook:

For starters, look at a typical Facebook page under the INFO tab. There you'll find a category that is your key ingredient here: "Looking for" (fill in the blank) allows each user to indicate their primary reason for being on Facebook. Check out this notation on your average Facebook user and you'll see that a common answer is "women" or "men". So ask yourself, "If you were a typical 20-something Facebook user, looking for a boyfriend, what better way than to jump into Dogbook with all fours?" Dog lovers abound, and seeking another dog lover for a companion may be an important goal for many. Even at my tender age of--well lets leave that to your imagination--if I were looking for a male companion, Dogbook might be a good place to sniff out other dog lovers in a game of social fetch.
As any hound will tell you, research is key. Dogbook certainly gives you the ability to check out your potential companions and their dog choices. After all, dog lovers have favorites. No self respecting, high energy agility competitor would be caught dead with a lazy, couch-potato Bloodhound as a pet. Then again, that same Border Collie loving agility competitor might consider a companion who loves Australian Shepherds or Jack Russel Terriers. For members of the human race, we gauge our compatibility with other possible human companions by the things we have in common. Yes, this can even include our dog choices.
Many of the most engaged dog lovers will find setting up a doggie profile and organizing his photo albums to be a fun way to spend a rainy day.
Add to that the interest of discussion groups and you've found a perfect place to discuss the pros and cons of local dogparks, whine about leash laws, and yes, even share your expertise that is for sale.
No doubt, many trainers, groomers, and countless other canine products and services will be parked on this page woofing about their wares. This will make for more and better choices for dog owners, as they seek out these services and products, and get input from others who have used them.

I could probably go on for at least as long as my 3 pups nap, but I'll leave it at this. I think you get the idea. If you're a Facebook user, be sure to stop in at my page and become a fan. Flower Child or Happy Hippie?

While surfing the web recently, I came upon Happy Hippie, which includes a directory of Eco Friendly pet products. That got me to thinking and off I went, charging all over the Internet searching for fun stuff for green dogs. Just look what I found:

The Special Needs of Your 'Only Dog'

I'm an only child, so this is a great topic for me. I can totally relate to what my dogs need because kids need much of the same stuff as dogs. It's just common sense, but if you have only one dog, it can't hurt to read this list and make sure you're giving your Fido everything he or she needs to be fulfilled:

Exercise (duh!): Get out and walk!
A job ( doubtful he will take out the trash, but you could try training him to bring in the newspaper or pick up his toys or be your doting companion (heel?).
Affection: This is the easy stuff that you don't have to work at, like belly rubs and snuggles and hugs.
Healthy food that doesn't make him fat and meets his particular needs nutritionally.
Toys: They don't have to be expensive, but a few will help to keep him occupied when he needs a playmate and you are busy.
Treats: Reward for good behavior and you'll get more of it.
Dog companionship and socialization: Go to the dog park or visit friends with a dog regularly.

Today's post is a great big thank you from me. It has been such a breath of fresh air to add Dr. Jacki to this blog. Particularly meaningful have been the letters that have flowed in. It is delightful to hear from so many of you.

Dr. Jacki has been graciously answering your letters and I would like to give all of you a bit more help. First of all, I've added a page link to all of Dr. Jacki's posts in the ASK THE VET column. The link currently is at the top of the sidebar, under Dr. Jacki's photo. You'll notice also, that I have added her practice's website link, 4 Paws House Calls.

Prior to now, this link was accessed anytime you clicked on her photo, but I wanted to make it a bit easier to find. I do hope, if you are interested in locating a vet who makes house calls, that you will give Dr. Jacki a chance to visit and get acquainted. At her website, you'll find information on her services, products and contact information.

While some of you have continued to write with questions for a trainer, I am still on the prowl for the right person. If you know someone, please send them my way. No More Ticks for Tanner!

Happy Tanner has No More Ticks!

Why is Tanner so happy? Because he is now tick-free. After a terrible infestation in October, Tanner and his housemates--Oliver and Xena--endured a tough month of de-ticking. Fortunately for us, we had the backing of our organic pest control company, Bug Brigade, to solve the problem without adding toxins to our environment.

Here's our story. After a 6 day camping trip with the dogs, we apparently brought home half the ticks in all the woods we hiked through. When I discovered the rascals, I started removing them, using the technique I had learned at my vet. The count went higher and higher.

Soon, I realized that de-bugging was not solving the problem. It was clear that we must have already dropped lots of the little guys around the yard and our home, as the dogs kept turning up with more, each time I checked them.

I called Scott and explained the problem. He was reassuring and confident that his peppermint oil treatment would do the trick, as long as I did my part. What was my part?

Wash all the dog bedding and rugs in areas they like to lay
Remove the ticks from the dogs each day during the treatment duration
Spray them with a peppermint oil preparation he prescribed
Contain the dogs to a designated area of the home, giving him full access to the rest for annihilation. And no, I didn't have to keep them in crates or even in a small room. They had full access to our kitchen, family room and a large screened porch. The weather was nice, so this worked out just fine.

Scott's treatment involved a couple of heavy duty power sprayings of the yard, porch and trees. It smelled great--no chemical odors when you're using peppermint oil. We smelled like candy canes at Christmas time.

In addition, they went over our entire indoors, treating all the floorboards and every area that the dogs had previously spent time in. After leaving me with a couple of recipes (1 for dog spray and one for house spray), I was given a bottle of peppermint oil to continue back-up treatments.

I thought this might be it, but was pleasantly surprised when they returned for repeat performances until the ticks had dwindled to only an occasional one here or there. I was thrilled not to have to bomb my home or spray pesticides all over my yard. A month later, we found ourselves with no more bugs and the lingering sweet smell of peppermint. How could I not love that?

Jacque Models his Snuggie

All Things Dog Blog has the scoop; the Snuggies we all snicker at on TV are now available for your canine snugglers. Yup, and I've got the full facts. More features below:

Doggie Snuggies are made to completely wrap around your pup with a soft, warm, felt-like fleece fabric. It is washable and attaches to the dog with Velcro strips along the back. This makes for easy step in dressing, which is easier for dressing larger dogs.

My Senior Dog, Xena

Dear Dr. Jacki:

I have two older dogs that are both beginning to show signs of age. One is having occasional nausea, even though the majority of her days are spent in good quality.

The other has a slight difficulty getting into the car now. I read somewhere that I shouldn't simply lift him into the car, as it makes the dog feel incapable and less confident. The article indicated that I should assist him, rather than lifting him completely. What are your thoughts on this? He is able to do it on his own sometimes, but often I have to assist when he becomes frustrated. Is that okay?

Dear Worried Reader:

If occasional vomiting means once every few days then that could be fixed with a few things. Notice if your dog vomits before or after a meal. If before a meal, try offering a snack in between meals (all dogs should be fed at least twice a day) or try offering the meal a little sooner in the day. Sometimes an empty stomach can cause nausea.

You may be able to offer an acid reducer like Pepcid. You would have to call your vet to get the appropriate dose as it is based on weight. Small dogs usually get ¼ tab, medium sized dogs get ½ tab and large dogs can get 1 whole tab.

If the vomiting is daily, then you need to take your dog to the vet. Bloodwork should be run in order to rule out any serious issues that could be causing the nausea.

As for your other dog….I don't think they care at all if they are assisted or lifted into the car. Dogs don't operate like people do so, it isn't important if they do it on their own.

If you have to lift your animal into the car, this means that he has pain (probably due to arthritis) and he needs to be on medication. It is very painful to have arthritis and this is why he does not want to jump up in the car. Again…see your vet about this. He can prescribe medications that will help with the pain and inflammation caused by arthritis. Good questions!!
