Though we’ve already sent out a newsletter to all the members, here’s an announcement on our themes compatibility with upcoming WordPress 3.0.

The update in all the existing themes has been well before a week now. With WordPress RC2 release, the final version will be available any moment now (rumoured to be released in about 2-3 days). The new version will have so many features and one of the key feature update is custom menu navigation.

With templatic themes, you can use the custom navigation as a widget where you can simply create a custom menu and drag and drop it into the widgets > navigation area.

Headover to templatic members area and download latest version of the theme. Make sure to read changelog.txt file in order to know exactly which files are changed and upgrade accordingly.

Note: We highly recommend keeping backup of your existing wordpress database and theme before making the upgrade. Its not that anything is likely to go wrong with this theme update. But its always nice to be safe.

With the upcoming 3.0 release, WordPress is introducing a new user interface to help manage navigation menus, which simply means you’ll get a new page with some tools on it to help you add, delete, and arrange links.

To utilize this feaure, you must first activate it. Without activation, your menu management page will display nothing, but an error.

If it’s currently inactive, in your WordPress administration panel, go to Appearance > Menus to see the error.

How to Activate WordPress 3.0 Menu Management

Add the following code to the functions.php file of your theme.

if (function_exists('add_theme_support')) {
	add_theme_support('nav-menus');
}

While add_theme_support(‘nav-menus’); is enough to activate the Menu Management page, the additional code around this necessary line makes sure if later or earlier versions of WordPress doesn’t have this feature then it will simply do nothing and cause no error.

What the code above means:

The code above simply means if the Add Theme Support function exists, use that function to add Nav-Menus feature. If it doesn’t exist, do nothing.

Step by Step

Open theme folder and find functions.php.

Open functions.php using Notepad or text editor of your choice.

Copy and paste the code above.

File > Save functions.php

Where to place the code

If the functions.php file of your theme is messy or you don’t really know where to place the code, go to the end of functions.php and paste the code before:

?>

A question mark immediately next to a right arrow marks the end of a set of codes. The last combination of question mark and right arrow in the file marks the end of the file. Normally, if you add any code right before the file ends, you’d have no problem.

In the rare case that your theme has a functions.php file, but it’s empty, copy and paste the following code:

<?php
if (function_exists('add_theme_support')) {
	add_theme_support('nav-menus');
}
?>

This set of codes is only slightly different from what you were first given. The additional

<?php

and

?>

at the beginning and ending of this set of codes means start PHP and end PHP.

You may close functions.php. For the rest of this tutorial, you don’t need it. Now you’ve activated the Menu Management feature or user interface, here’s what it looks like:

Using Menu Management User Interface

If you use wp_nav_menu() in theme template files to display the menu, by default, it will list only links with a Page attached to it. But, what if you wanted to add custom external links without creating a new page just to point to it? For example, adding a Twitter link to your site’s main menu. Here’s how.

First, create a custom menu because WordPress will not allow you to add, delete, or re-arrange links without at least having one custom menu. Name your menu then save it. For this tutorial, my first custom menu is named, “first.”

After creating the custom menu, you have several options on Menu Management page to add links. For example, you can simply check the boxes next to the Pages and Categories you want to add then click the Add to Menu button. You can also add custom links and here’s what it looks like:

Don’t forget to click the Save Menu button after adding new links.

How to Display Custom Menu

Like I mentioned before, wp_nav_menu() by default displays your list of links based on what Pages you have. It doesn’t display custom menu links. To display the custom menu wherever you want it to show up, copy and paste the following:

<?php wp_nav_menu('menu=first'); ?>

Replace “first” with the name of your menu.

What the code above means:

Start PHP

Use wp_nav_menu() to display menu

The custom menu I want to use is “first.”

End PHP

In whichever file you’re pasting it in, save the file. Upload this file to the theme folder on your server if you’re not directly editing it through the WordPress administration panel.

I created a blank theme just for this tutorial. Here’s what it looks like for me after putting the code above in the index.php file of my blank theme.

If you right click on the page currently displaying your menu and go to View Source, you get to see what this menu looks like under the hood. Here’s what it looks like for me:

<div class="menu-first-container">
<ul id="menu-first" class="menu">
	<li id="menu-item-4" class="menu-item menu-item-type-custom"><a href="http://son">son</a>
 <ul class="sub-menu">
 <li id="menu-item-6" class="menu-item menu-item-type-custom"><a href="http://grandchild">grand child</a></li>
 </ul>
	</li>
	<li id="menu-item-5" class="menu-item menu-item-type-custom"><a href="http://daughter">daughter</a></li>
</ul>
</div>

Wherever you see “first” in the set of codes above, you know it’s there only because I named the custom menu “first.”

Display Multiple Custom Menus

To do that, you have to first create the second menu. Here’s my second menu, which is conveniently named, “second.” And, I’ve added two links under the second menu.

To display the second menu, duplicate code for the first menu and change menu=first to menu=second. If you named your second menu, “submenu,” then change menu=first to menu=submenu. Here’s the entire code:

<?php wp_nav_menu('menu=second'); ?>

Differentiating Custom Menus and Customizing Them

There are several ways to differentiate and customize custom menus. The most obvious one is using different names for first and second menus. The less obvious ways are customizing container_class, container_id, and menu_class. For example:

wp_nav_menu('menu=first&amp;menu_class=my-main-menu');

Under the hood, by adding menu_class=my-main-menu using the ampersand sign (&), my menu list changes from:

<ul id="menu-first" class="menu">

to:

<ul id="menu-first" class="my-main-menu">

If you want to customize the container_class along with menu_class, here’s how:

wp_nav_menu('menu=first&amp;menu_class=my-main-menu&amp;container_class=container-name-goes-here');

As you can see, to add another customizable option to the menu, you simply use the ampersand sign, the option you’re customizing, and the value of that option, which can be any string of texts of your choosing. After you’ve added the code, save the file, refresh the web page, and check under the hood by choosing View Source to see the changes made.

For a list of options you can customize or assign values to, go to wp_nav_menu at the WordPress Codex.

As a templatic customer, you demanded a magazine theme and here it is. The templatic theme store features many out of the box CMS and Business themes to represent your product and business. However, we were reluctant to make news/magazine themes as there are plenty of themes available in market in this niche. But our Premium Themes club members should get themes on each niche and not just one.

Today, we are releasing a unique layout for a magazine theme called “Hello”. The structure of this theme is unique and the features are out standing. We’re sure you’ll love this magazine wordpress theme.

Built as per your specification

Great thing about this theme is, it is built according to your specification. Earlier, we showed you some teaser to upcoming themes at templatic and you guys provided some very good suggestions that made much more sense. Because we were still in development stage, we were able to revise the structure of the theme and integrated some very important areas and got rid of unnecessary stuff. As you can see in the above image, the final outcome is lot better.

Just before two days, we sent a mail to our customers informing the availability of “Customize” – a templatic job board where they can post their advanced customization requirement in our themes and everyone can see the jobs posted in there. The response is phenomenal, and several jobs has been already posted there.

Why a Templatic Job Board?

Because not everyone is able to make advanced customization in the themes themselves. We frequently received paid customization requests but as much as we want, taking up customization jobs for our theme was not possible considering the awesome themes + upgrades we’re doing for existing and new wordpress themes. We recommended some designers/developers but they were not always free.

Creating Job Board to connect expert freelancers and our customers made much more sense.

Connecting customers + providers

Customize – the templatic job board is an initiative to connect you with templatic customers. This way, the customers and freelance providers will be able to connect with each other. Ultimately, this will be beneficial to everyone. The freelancers who are familiar with templatic themes will be able to help templatic theme users at reasonable compensation. Theme users on the other hand will get the custom changes done at a fair price.

Customers post + control jobs for free

Templatic customers can post as many jobs that they like – absolutely free. There is no hidden fees/charge involved. Not only that, they can control the job – Add/Edit/Delete jobs whenever they want.

FREE access to Everyone

Viewing jobs and contact details of the job provider is accessible to ALL, however, only templatic customers will be able to post a job there. Not a templatic customer yet? Become one.

Visit Job Board and start making some extra cash

Since we announced customize job board to our members, several jobs have already been posted. Are you a freelance developer / designer? Head over to Templatic Job Board and connect with some job providers now.

Visit: http://templatic.com/customize/

Disclaimer: This is our humble endeavor to connect you with the freelance
Designer/Developers. Templatic takes no share from anyone, nor we are responsible for any communication you do with each other. Emails /Support queries in this matter will not be entertained.

Templatic team works hard on improving existing themes, providing better support , and making things better for existing customers. Stay tuned for yet another announcement soon. Stay tuned.

You have noticed that at templatic, we’ve been providing you out of the box, practical and strategically planned premium wordpress themes that helps you represent, grow and monetize your business on the web.

Past this month, we are working on improving things for existing customers by providing revolutionary features such as auto-install of a theme. Also we’ve been working on creating some different, unique themes that will be released over the course of next few months.

We are showing the teaser to the themes in work here just so you can provide us your suggestion/critic on time and we can make the theme even more practical for your actual use.

Note: Click on each image to view full size screen shots.

Answers Theme

The theme is inspired by Yahoo Answers and Darren Hoyt’s wpquestions.com project. As the theme suggests, this is a theme that turns your wordpress install into a question-answer website. Users can quickly register and ask / answer questions. User profiles are managed on your front end. They can manage their own questions / answers and other users can rate the answers. Not only that, as an admin, you can even charge money from your users for asking questions (Just in case you want to start a paid consultancy/help business)

Hospitality

This theme is targeted for hotel/hospitality business. Elegant look, relevant sections and widgets will make it even more inline with the hospitality business.

Rejuvenate

Just like hospitality, hair salon, spa and other beauty services business need a good web front. This theme should help you get a professional website for them.

Automobile

You have already seen the best ever real estate theme that we released earlier. On the same level, we wish to build a car portal. The initial design is ready but we don’t have a damn clue on what section/features we should include in an automobile portal.

But we are sure you guys will provide is with nice suggestions and make things easy for us to build.

Hello Magazine

You rarely see a magazine theme on this site. That’s because there are plenty of magazine themes available in the market already. Unless we are to build something different, we’d not make one. Anyway, we think Hello is a unique and different kind of magazine theme. Coding in process.

Single Product

We have released few CMS themes to represent your product but haven’t provided this useful structure. So, here’s one more theme to represent your product on the web.

BlackBerry

And finally there is blackberry. We are not sure on this name yet but this theme is almost same to our iPhoneApp theme released earlier. The difference is, this theme will be a bit advanced and can be used to represent almost any product – A mobile phone, software product, book, music CD, DVD or other product. Awesome isn’t it?

If you haven’t already, join the Premium Themes club now. Our club prices going up in few days.

We need your feedback

Our earlier themes show that we DO listen to our user feedback. The themes in our store are practical useful because you guys provided valuable feedback earlier and we revised our themes accordingly.

Like the themes previewed here? Please help us make them perfect when they are in design phase. Think the themes are missing some important features or, we got something wrong there? Here’s your chance to change the themes and get it right. Please let us know your critics via comments here.
