The Submarines are coming to the surface

The Submarines' "You, Me, and The Bourgeoisie" has been enjoying increasing plays over the last 8 weeks topping out last week with 11 (they already lead this week's plays with 4). The song is upbeat and catchy, definitely worth a listen.

Update: It looks like Steve Jobs is reading this site as the new iPhone commercial features a very brief, instrumental snippet of The Submarines' You, Me, and The Bourgeoisie.

Josh Ritter's Historical Conquests

Josh Ritter (not related to John) has been a favorite of WERS for quite some time. Ritter has been receiving at least 10 plays a week since the debut of The Historical Conquests of Josh Ritter, his 6th studio album. My favorite track off the album is 'The Temptation of Adam' but the entire album is rather impressive.

Increased Air Time: Devotchka

Devotchka, Rolling Stone's "Best Little Grammy-Nominated Band Youve Never Heard Of", has been slowly creeping their way up the play list at WERS. The Clockwise Witness has been getting 5-6 plays per week for the last 6 weeks, but is on track for 10-14 plays this week.

Dr. Dog: The Second Coming of the Beatles?

I first discovered Dr. Dog when I called them out as a Best of SWSX 2005. Even back then, I thought they sounded a lot like the Beatles. Rolling Stone agrees stating, "The Philly quintet's low-fi, throwback sound -- cf. Beatles, Beach Boys, Chicago -- is still in effect. But the more you listen, the less Dr. Dog's influences seem to matter, since the songs are so damn likable."

Vampire Weekend Lives Up to the Hype

I assume WERS hasn't been giving Vampire Weekend the rotations they deserve due to the hype surrounding this band, however, the album easily meets (and exceeds) expectations.

I don't need to add to the noise, but Vampire Weekend's Caribbean/Calypso beats and simple lyrics are a welcome retreat from business as usual.

Thao is a new artist in rotation at WERS first debuting on Jan. 18, 2008, 11 days before her new album (We Brave Bee Stings And All) was released. Since then, the single "Bag of Hammers" has seen increasing plays, peaking last week at 7.
