With the convergence of media and the web the ability to get content to your audience is more and more dependant on broadband availability. Here is yet another methodology for making broadband Internet as pervasive as possible. It will be interesting to see how the FCC responds to this device. A very powerful consortium is behind this endeavor: Microsoft, Google, Dell, Hewlett-Packard, Intel and Philips so with all these big companies trying to make this a reality we will hopefully see this come to reality some time in early 2009.

“A coalition of big technology companies wants to bring high-speed Internet access to consumers in a new way: over television airwaves. Key to the project is whether a device scheduled to be delivered to federal labs today lives up to its promise.”

Here is an excellent comparison of the Terms of Services for some of the major video hosting providers. We at Feedia encourage you to understand the TOS of any service you are using when it comes to publishing video on the web. It is crucial for understanding how your intellectual property rights are effected and we found this article to be very helpful in understanding these issues. Of particular interest to us is the ability to use creative commons licensing and how some of your major services do not allow you to use that type of license.

“Mobile TV is the most important application beyond voice and messaging in phones. U.S. users alone will spend $30 billion annually on mobile TV.” Source: New York Times / Reuters
Andrew Cole, Vice President for Consultancy, A.T. Kearney

Video iPods, VCast, Zune and a landslide of devices and services that are coming to or all ready on the market to meet this $30 billion demand.
Being a Blackberry 8700 user I am pleased to see that Quickplayer is now available on my mobile device. For “$7.95 USD a month (not including applicable data charges that may apply from you wireless carrier) to get unlimited access to all channels. There are over 100 channels updated daily!”[swf width=”350″ height=”310″]http://www.getquickplayer.com/images/quickDemo.swf[/swf]

Now this is great a subscription based service I can receive on my Blackberry, one of the best pieces of hardware technology I have used in the last 10 years, but my interest does not stop at the subscription service. Being a company focused on the new media space the QuickPlay Personal Entertainment Server really interests me. “The QuickPlay Personal Entertainment Server is a mobile service delivery platform constructed using a component architecture approach. It provides the back-end functionality to support the QuickPlay Personal Entertainment Center within a hosted environment. With the proven ability for simultaneous deployment across multiple carriers, it is the ultimate media content solution.” The power to create and distribute your own mobile media channel now thats compelling. I am also very keen on the Social aspects of the Personal Entertainment Center where you can poll, vote or send to a friend directly from the Blackberry. I will be testing out this service in the weeks to come and give you an update.

I should also point out that Sona Mobile has a MobileTV option that they are supposed to be releasing, but they seem more focused on the gaming industry on the mobile platform right now. I also want to bring your attention to Melodeo who offer a service on your mobile device as well, just not on the Blackberry, but quite a few other brands of phones. They also focus on podcasts and have a nice sized directory of shows to choose from including NPR, The Onion, CNN and HBO.
So what is your company or organization doing to address this market? Have questions drop us a line.
