The most important thing the month of vegetarianism has done for me is to expand my horizons. I already had a very varied diet; this takes everything up a notch. This month, I've been going where the vegetarians go (at the same time going where vegetarians would not go).

I love finding places that unlikely winners -- out of the way, boldly different, great view, with high-quality, interesting dishes, and great service. Yesterday, it was Samovar Tea Lounge in San Francisco.

On my way with a friend to Moscone center for a show, I checked the Yelp reviews. This place sounded interesting. It is a little tricky to find, with its unusual location at the terrace level of Yerba Buena gardens. The terrace level is on both sides of the street, spanned by a foot bridge and Samovar is on the side opposite the main entrance.

This is not the kind of place I would normally visit, with its emphasis on what I like to call hippie chow. And it's a "Tea Lounge," not a restaurant? But I am vegetarian for a month and am on the lookout for interesting alternatives. So I go where the vegetarians go, and that means hippie chow.

We'll get to the food in a minute.

The ambience was peaceful, relaxed, and informal without being sloppy. And it was noon, on a busy Friday, with a major show at Moscone West, just across the street. That's what made this a real find -- normally when I attend this show, I have lunch early because of the crowds. The place was busy and pretty full but not crowded or rushed. We sat outside because it was a lovely day; had the weather been bad, it might have been more difficult since the tables were mostly taken.

The host and wait staff were gracious and efficient, the service was quick and accommodating.

The menu has two pages of tea. Two dense pages, full. They ought to call this place a Tea Lounge or something. We had the Earl Gray and it was as good a cup of tea as I've had. But we're not here for the tea.

It's a poached egg (perfectly poached, which is a pretty tricky thing to accomplish), a scoop of brown rice, with a slightly sweet, complex sauce in the bottom of the bowl, making it easy to scoop a little in each bite. On the side there is your choice of salmon, smoked duck, or braised tofu. Before I was vegetarianing, the smoked duck would have been a no-brainer but today, I ordered braised tofu, firmly in hippie chow territory, which I would never have ordered. Accompanying the tofu was a light, soy sauce based dipping sauce.

This was really a delightful dish. Light and flavorful, with delicate, easy-going flavors that went together in quiet harmony. I plan to make something similar very soon.

My friend Brad ordered the TLT: "Tamari-Mirin Braised Tofu, Lettuce, Tomato served on Leadbetter's handmade English muffin with mayo." This dish is vegan. Again, not something I would order but it looked wonderful and Brad said it was.

Each entree was $12, very reasonable for the location and the quality. The tea was $9 but enough to serve at least two people.

I have to rethink the whole hippie chow thing.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/feedme/moe/~4/7W-V-pSkv88" height="1" width="1" />

(The first question is "Why??!??!")

For the past few months, I have been looking at vegetarian practices and found a surprising amount of variation.

At one end of the spectrum is the vegan, who eats no animal products at all, including dairy, eggs, and honey. Many avoid lesser-known animal derivatives such as gelatine and rennet (used for some cheeses and puddings). Some even decline to wear wool or leather.

An ovo-vegetarian diet includes eggs but not dairy products. A lacto-vegetarian diet includes dairy products but not eggs. An ovo-lacto vegetarian diet includes both eggs and dairy products.

Within the meat category are some more questions? Fish? Shellfish, like clams and shrimp? One friend eats chicken, fish, and shellfish but still considers herself a vegetarian. She is actually a "pollo-pescetarian" and if she skipped the fish, she'd be a "pollotarian". "Pescetarians" eat fish but no meat or poultry.

Some vegetarians won't eat anything that "had a mother." Some won't eat anything that "had a face."

And then there are the vegtarians who will eat bacon. Don't laugh, I know several. One calls bacon the "gateway drug."

Wow. Nice to have choices. I once knew someone who called himself a flexetarian.

To answer the question: Technically, I am an ovo-lacto vegetarian this month: No meat, fish, shellfish; yes on dairy and eggs.

And no bacon!
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/feedme/moe/~4/kO00d53Sv-k" height="1" width="1" />

Usually, a picture like this would be of something I ate. But last Tuesday, it was part of the challenge of being a Temporary Vegetarian.

At an industry dinner at Tamarine in Palo Alto, these gorgeous lamb chops (and a panko-fried trout and Shaking Beef) went untouched. I had the sweet potato fries, curried long beans, and a fantastic apple-jicama salad. I had the soup portion of the Ha-Long Bay Soup (coconut-coriander consommé but not the crab wontons. I had the banh mi roti appetizer, a pan fried bread with red panang curry sauce.

That doesn't sound like deprivation, does it? I was tempted, but not by much.

I need to go back to Tamarine next month.
<xhtml:img xmlns:xhtml="http://www.w3.org/1999/xhtml" src="http://feeds.feedburner.com/~r/feedme/moe/~4/YkfAoHDvSlw" height="1" width="1" />

I had plans to meet some friends for lunch at Armadillo Willy’s, a Texas BBQ restaurant. This appointment was set a few weeks before my experiment as Temporary Vegetarian.

I considered, for a moment, changing plans but decided this would be part of the experience. Now, I love barbecue. I mean, I really love barbecue. How would I deal with the temptation? And for that matter, is there anything at Willy’s a vegetarian can eat?

The online menu showed me that one of their salads is vegetarian. I ordered that, with a side of sweet potato fries.

Win!! The salad was fresh and cold, with corn, a few crispy croutons, romaine and iceberg, and was topped with a sliced, grilled portabello mushroom. This salad was so good that I would order it even if I were not the ordering as a vegetarian.

And oddly, the barbecued delights everyone else was enjoying didn’t bother me at all. The biggest surprise in this experiment is that so far, on Day 11, I haven’t felt deprived at all.

Meatless chili always left me feeling unsatisfied -- until now. Complex, hearty, and flavorful, this chili satisfies.

I haven't been impressed with meatless chili recipes before, but this one is by Pam Anderson, and I trust her work.

I made a few changes, halving the recipe but leaving some of the more flavorful components at full measure. I also served it on brown rice which gave it the perfect texture. This one is a winner!

Black Bean-Hominy No-Meat Meaty Chili

This is a surprisingly satisfying no-meat chili.

2 cups vegetable broth, Pacific, Kitchen Basics or Imagine brand

1 can petite-diced tomatoes, 14.5 ounces

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

1 medium onion, cut into medium dice

1 bell pepper, any color

1.5 tablespoons chili powder

½ teaspoon ground cumin

½ teaspoon oregano

1 can black beans, 15.5 ounces; drained and rinsed

1 can hominy, 15.5 ounces; drained and rinsed

3 large cloves garlic, minced

1 ounce bittersweet chocolate

¼ cup chopped fresh cilantro

RICE

1 cup brown rice

1 ½ cups water

½ teaspoon salt

Combine rice, water, salt, bring to boil, cover and simmer 30-40 minutes, until tender.

If any spices are in unground, toast in dry Dutch oven or stockpot over medium-high heat until fragrant, transfer to spice grinder.

Place empty pot back on medium heat, add oil. Once oil is hot, add onions and peppers. Sauté until soft and golden brown, about 5 minutes. Add chili powder, cumin and oregano: sauté until fragrant, a minute or so. Add beans and hominy (drained and rinsed) along with tomatoes and broth. Bring to a simmer, reduce heat to low and simmer, partially covered, until vegetables are tender and flavors have blended, about 20 minutes.

Stir in garlic, chocolate and cilantro; simmer a couple of minutes to blend flavors. Turn off heat and let stand a few minutes. Salt to taste (about 1/2-1 teaspoon). Adjust seasonings and serve over brown rice.
