4. Give it something else to think about.
When scientists scanned the brains of people eating different foods, they found that the brain reacts to fat in the mouth in much the same way that the nose responds to a pleasant aroma. So if you feel a craving coming on, apply your favorite scent.

5. Never let it see a heaping plate.
The more food that’s in front of you, the more you’ll eat. So at a restaurant, ask your waiter to pack up half of your meal before serving it to you, then eat the extras for lunch the next day.

6. Put it under the lights.
You consume fewer calories at a well-lit restaurant table than you do dining in a dark corner. "In the light, you’re more self-conscious and worry that other patrons are watching what you eat," explains Wansink.

7. Talk it down.
Entertaining friends with a great story doesn’t give you much time to eat up, so you’ll probably still have food on your plate when they’re done. Once they’re finished, call it quits too.

8. Offer it a seat.
If you sit down to snack — and use utensils and a plate — you’ll eat fewer calories at subsequent meals.

9. Satisfy it with soup.
Start lunch with about 130 calories worth of vegetable soup and you’ll eat 20 percent fewer calories during lunch overall, say Penn State experts.

10. Give it little choice.
Packages that contain assorted varieties of cookies, candy, dips, cheese, etc., make you want to try all the flavors. The effect is so powerful, says Wansink, that when people are given 10 colors of M&Ms to munch on, not seven, they eat 30 percent more!

AVOID EMPTY STOMACH

• Try not to sleep with an empty stomach. However, it is also not advisable to eat right before you go to sleep. If you are hungry and have difficulty sleeping, try have a glass of warm milk. Why do you think babies sleep so soundly after they have some milk?

AVOID STRESSFUL ATMOSPHERE

• Sleep in the comfort of your own bedroom. However, you have to tidy your bed and change your bed sheets often. Try also aromatherapy scents for calming effect, which will help you fall asleep.

More than 230 rockets have been fired on Israel in the past 12 days

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert says a crackdown against Hamas will continue, after an Israeli man was killed by a rocket fired from Gaza.

"No-one involved in terror has immunity," Mr Olmert told his Cabinet.

The Israeli man died after shrapnel hit him in the neck in the town of Sderot. Hamas militants said they had carried out the rocket attack.

About 40 people have been killed in Gaza in 12 days of Israeli air strikes designed to stop the rocketing.

Mr Olmert hinted that any Israeli action would be open-ended.

"We are not acting according to any timetable that is dictated externally. We will decide where, how and to what extent we act," he said.

One other Israeli civilian has been killed and 16 wounded by rockets fired on Israeli towns, particularly Sderot, in recent days.

According to the Israeli army, more than 230 rockets have been fired from Gaza since mid-May.

Mr Olmert’s spokeswoman said that Israel would not only target those directly involved in the rocket attacks.

"If somebody in the hierarchy is involved in terrorism, they should not feel safe," said Miri Eisin.

Hundreds of genes may be linked to breast cancer

Scientists have identified four more genes that increase breast cancer risk.

Cancer Research UK scientists led an international team of experts in the world’s first large-scale "whole genome search" for breast cancer genes.

They sifted through the DNA of nearly 50,000 women, half of them breast cancer patients and half healthy.

It is hoped their discovery, published in Nature journal, will lead to more genes being identified, and better testing to identify women most at risk.

By studying the genetic material researchers found five culprit DNA regions housing new four genes, FGFR2, TNRC9, MAP3K1 and LSP1.

Professor Douglas Easton, director of Cancer Research UK’s genetic epidemiology unit in Cambridge, said: "Now we know these search methods are effective, we think that many more breast cancer genes can be found.

"These methods are already being applied by Cancer Research UK to find genes for a whole range of other cancers, including prostate, bowel and lung cancer."

Overall, inherited cases make up between 5 and 10% of all breast cancer cases in the UK which total 44,000 a year. "Lifestyle factors" such as smoking and environmental factors are believed to account for the rest.

Now don’t tell the co-op board, but I crafted a plan to ditch my Mul-T-Lock key for good. My apartment building, of course, uses an intercom system to remotely unlock the front door for guests, deliveries, etc. This keychain upgrade gets me in the front door… keylessly.

The mechanism is simple enough, just a momentary button on the panel in my apartment, but the mess of wires in the wall is a little unsettling. I took some meter readings of the terminals and sorted out the door button wiring. You can see where the door button is soldered through the PCB, which made it easier to identify the proper terminals. This panel has a "Door", "Talk" and "Listen" button. The "Door" button is normally-open and the circuit is about 22V. In the following steps we’re going to effectively bypass the button with our own circuit.

Since Windows Update requires an ActiveX control in order to run, it’s impossible to exclude Internet Explorer completely, so you will need to install IETab first, the magical Firefox extension that lets you open a web page with Internet Explorer within Firefox in a couple of clicks.

Once it is installed, you will need to replace the Windows Update shortcut in the All Programs menu. To do this:

• Press Start. Select All Programs.
• Right-click on Windows Update menu item and select Properties.
• In the properties window, enter “C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe” http://update.microsoft.com in the Target field. Make sure you enter the correct path for your Firefox install and if the path contains any blank space, enclose the path in double quotes.

Since IE Tab includes update.microsoft.com in its list of sites to render using IE, the next time you select Windows Update from the All Programs menu, it will launch in a Firefox tab.

Yet another alternative that doesn’t require IE or even IETab is WindizUpdate, an independent site that provides a Firefox plugin to detect and download patches your computer is missing. I haven’t tried it but according to comments I’ve read around it seems to be even smarter than Windows Update as it identifies what Windows components you have installed and only offers relevant patches.

The tiny setup program gives you the option of configuring your PC in host or client mode, or skipping installation altogether (in which case TeamViewer runs without installing anything). I chose the latter option on two PCs: one running XP, the other, Vista. From there I simply entered a numeric ID and password generated by the software, and presto: Instant remote access. In addition to controlling the other PC, I could transfer files and chat with the other user (myself, in this case). By enabling server mode, I was able to switch directions and share my desktop with the other PC–neat for showing presentations, demonstrations, etc.

TeamViewer works around firewalls and promises 1024-bit RSA private/public key exchange and 128-bit RC4 session encoding. In other words, it’s pretty secure. It also has at least one advantage over each of the three aforementioned remote-access programs, so if you’re interested in connecting to another computer from afar, give TeamViewer a try.
