In the countdown to a speech – some tense topics demand attention. Good morning, I’m Elizabeth Wynne Johnson; this is Power Breakfast from Capitol News Connection. From the Pentagon to Google – everyone’s feeling vulnerable to cyber-attack. Today the Senate Armed Services Committee gets a closed-door briefing today on cybersecurity. LORDAN The problem is, the question is who’s responsible for defending our country and against what? Is it the President who’s the Commander in Chief or is it Congress which is entitled under the Constitution to prepare for the common defense? Tim Lordan is Executive Director of the Congressional Internet Caucus Advisory Committee. The president recently appointed a new cyber security coordinator; the question is, what exactly is his role? LORDAN We’re asking though Congress that they look at this holistically because of the various committees and subcommittees and fiefdoms up on Capitol Hill, I don’t think they’re going to be able to get this job done in a piecemeal fashion the way they do with other pieces of legislation. In the meantime, it’s another hot day in January for Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner. He appears before the House Oversight committee – to be grilled on the government’s handling of A-I-G’s now-infamous (but still incomprehensible) credit default swaps. And looking ahead to a certain big speech tonight, people expect the president to address the economy and health care… two things the administration has tried to link for months now. NELSON: I don’t think they are synonymous. Democratic Senator Ben Nelson doesn’t buy the package deal. However he still wants to hear about both. NELSON I’m of a mind where this is one where we probably start needing to make a pie a piece at a time as opposed to a comprehensive approach. Focus on small business, focus on rural health issues and begin to segment it by prioritizing what we do. As always - the thing with pie is, everybody wants some. And divvying it up is a zero-sum game. In other words, going in to tonight’s State of the Union address, all eyes are on the pie. That’s Power Breakfast from Capitol News Connection.
