It’s been about a day since Firefox 3.5 launch and the results show it was a great success. According to Mozilla Worldwide Real-time Firefox Downloads dashboard, it has been downloaded about 5 million times.

While it may seem a low number compared with Firefox 3’s record setting 8 million downloads on day one, it’s hard to compare because unlike Firefox 3, Firefox 3.5 is also available as an update, so users clicking on Check for Updates… in the Help menu, will get it without counting as a Firefox download. Last year, there was no other way to get Firefox 3 at that time, but downloading it in full package.

1. New JavaScript Engine: TraceMonkey

This new javascript engine promises performance improvements when running heavy JavaScript web applications and sites, such as Google Docs or Meebo. JavaScript speed is important as more and more people are relying on web apps to get things done.

2. Location Aware Browsing

One of the greatest new things in Firefox 3.5 is location aware browsing support. Essentially, you can grant Firefox permission to find out where you are based on your IP address and nearby wireless access points, which the browser can then relay to web sites in order to provide you with a more personalized browsing experience.

3. Support for HTML 5 and Downloadable Fonts

A lot of the new stuff in Firefox 3.5 is support for new web technologies that only web developers will really be happy about. But some of those new technologies, like HTML 5 and the CSS @font-face rule, will have a noticeable positive effect for users.

4. Fun with Tabs and Windows

Firefox 3.5 adds two new items to the History menu: Recently Closed Tabs and Recently Closed Windows. They do just what they are supposed to do: they let users choose from a list of recently closed tabs or windows and reopen them.

5. Private Browsing

In private browsing mode, Firefox doesn’t save your browsing, search, download, or web form histories, or your cookies, or temporary Internet files. Private browsing doesn’t mean anonymous browsing — your ISP might still have a record of where you’ve been, and if you log into any sites, they might still have a record of who you are and when you were there.

“Read a statement by Apple and I decided to answer with our results, shares Asa Dotzler, director at Mozilla.

Perhaps the two companies count the number of automatic updates too. Firefox 3.0.11 was released on June 11 and includes updates mostly security and stability. This is a renewal of Firefox 3, which was launched in June last year and set a world record with its 8 million unique downloads the first day.

Version 3.5 of Firefox browser handles video like a web page. The new product, expected in late June includes video player for the open formats Ogg Vorbis and Theora.

Given the support and HTML5, users will be able to edit videos in real time and add them in arbitrary units. In addition, the image can zoom in and examine the Web page itself or separate therefrom, said TechCrunch.com.

All these features outweigh Flash Video brought and would significantly advantage of Firefox, if the format Ogg become sufficiently popular in the Internet. Moreover open video formats are supported by the new browser and also pre-loaded fonts and other graphical elements.

FireFox 3.5 works significantly faster than previous versions of the browser. It has always been the speed characteristics of the web application to Mozilla. It is now available for download beta 4 of Firefox 3.5, which is the last before the final version.
