Reason #7:

All feline friends are self-grooming members of your family. You will never have to worry about nagging them to wash their fur. Although, some are a little more obsessive about their appearance than others. Gracie would never let a small thing like the invasion of a frog into her home deter her from making sure the fur on her back legs was spotless. On the other hand, Benjamin Bunny will run around the house with spots of fur sticking straight up in the air if he hears a toilet flushing clear across the other side of the house.

Reason #8:

All feline friends come equipped with an automatic human calming device. The PURR works on humans of all ages, temperments, and sizes. But beware, it is addictive. You may find yourself unable to move away from your cat until her PURR deactivates.

Reason #9:

A feline friend will ensure the reduction of insects (and in my case amphibians) in your house. Although you may discover that you become much more adept at solving puzzles after finding various parts of insects laying around who were foolish enough to sneak inside your home. Gracie and Benjamin Bunny tend to play a little to roughly with the insects (and occasional amphibian) who foolishly sneak into my house. Consequently, I sometimes have to put pieces back together in order to figure out what each invader used to be. Of course, the number of insect and amphibian invaders entering my house is probably greater than most of yours since I live in a nature preserve.

Reason #10:

A feline friend can be a great help when you are decorating your house. If something doesn't look right on a shelf, they will dutifully remove it for you without even being asked. When we moved into our current house, Benjamin Bunny took it upon himself to redecorate several shelves in the floor-to-ceiling bookcases located in the family room. At first I didn't fully appreciate his efforts, but eventually we reached an artistic compromise.

Have you ever wondered... why your cat takes so many catnaps throughout the day? Did you ever consider the possibility that you might be the cause? Maybe taking care of you is exhausting, and naps are the only way your cat can cope with the situation. It makes sense when you consider all that your cat has to do on a daily basis.

Just waking you up in the morning takes multiple head butts, loud mews, paw pats, and pacing. Then, there is the constant weaving in between your legs to keep you moving in the direction of the kitchen. If your cat strays too far away or pauses to plop down on the floor, you will never make get a chance to eat a good breakfast before leaving for work - whether you work in or out of the home.

If you are like me and spend a considerable amount of your day working from home, your cat is responsible for making sure you take sufficient breaks to avoid work related burnout. Think of how much energy goes into crawling all over your computer keyboard, hopping onto your shoulders while you are typing, head butting you and the screen, shoving objects out of your way, and taking a few minutes in between to remind you that a snack for everyone might help your productivity.

And of course, your cat wants you to stay physically fit. She pretends to be interested in catching small birds attached by a string to plastic sticks in order to help you tone your arm muscles. Items are repeatedly knocked off a counter so you can get in your daily set of squats and build up those leg muscles.

Making sure you never experience loneliness while at home is also a top priority for your cat. That is why he or she is willing to follow you from room to room and sometimes help you with small chores such as unmaking the bed or unfolding the clothes. Even the possibility of an unpleasant smell will not deter your cat from keeping you company in the bathroom.

As the day draws to a close, your cat takes on the responsibility of making sure you finish your day with a good meal. Once again using the "weave between your legs while you try to walk" method, your cat guides you safely to the kitchen and helps you prepare an evening meal - one for you and one for her. If you are lucky, she will take it upon herself to make sure all of the ingredients going into your meal smell good. And if necessary, she might add an extra ingredient to your meal that you didn't even realize you needed.

I know that I have barely touched on all the different tasks a cat must undertake to care for his or her human. But, I am sure that I have made my point. Without catnaps, our feline friends would not have enough energy to care for us every day.

Reason #2:

You will never have to worry about your alarm clock malfunctioning once you have a feline friend. He or she will always make sure that you are up several hours before the sun in order to prepare his or her breakfast.

Reason #3:

Feline friends are great at storing their toys out of site, eliminating the need for toy boxes taking up space around the house. However, you may find that your refrigerator or stove seem a little elevated after a few months due to the accumulation of toys that have been shoved underneath them.

Reason #4:

A feline friend will make sure you get some exercise everyday. For the cardio portion of your workout, she will flop down at your feet and pretend to want a belly rub. But the moment you bend down, your feline friend will move several feet away before flopping down again. Of course, you follow her to the new location only to have the same thing happen again. Before you know it, you will have finished several laps around the house.

Reason #5:

And finally, if you are a work-a-holic who needs to learn to take a break now and then. A feline friend is the perfect companion for you. For example, cats have perfected a variety of ways to force a person to stop working on his or her computer. Gracie and Benjamin Bunny's methods include laying on top of the keyboard, sitting on top of my work papers, bumping my leg and mewing pitifully to invoke a guilt response so I stop and play with them, and of course jumping on my shoulders and incapacitating the top portion of my body.
