When is a $150 shredder cheaper than a $60 shredder? When the $150 shredder is a high-performance, quiet, "smart" shredder--engineered to last.

Any sub-$100 shredder is going to cost you more than the Fellow Intellishred PS-79Ci shredder, because you'll have to replace the cheap shredder. There are also a lot of less tangible perks of using a smart shredder: you don't have to check the bin to see if it's full (the shredder has an indicator light for that), you can watch TV or talk on the phone while you shred, and you don't have to count how many sheets you're feeding into it or ever worry about whether you're going to have to spend 5 minutes trying to unjam a wad of paper. Sure, this shredder is a little pricey for a home or small office shredder, but you won't be disappointed. As with many things in life, you get what you pay for when you buy a shredder. I've owned three Royal shredders (one at home and two at work), around the $60-$70 price range, and they all pale in comparison to the Fellow shredder. If the shredders don't break or wear out on the Royal models, the sensors do. I remember returning home one day after work to find that my shredder had probably been running nonstop for hours, with nothing in it. The top of the shredder was so hot, I'm surprised it didn't melt the plastic or catch on fire!

In my experience, there are two things that kill shredders: jams and a backed-up paper bin. The Fellow Intellishred series of shredders tackles both problems with properly-engineered solutions. First, the machine won't shred anything that's too thick--which means you typically won't be able to cause a jam, in the first place. There is one caveat: once you get the shredder to start shredding something, it will continue shredding that item even if part of it is thicker. If it does happen to jam, it backs up, gets a running start, and tries again, probably 2 or 3 times, until it realizes that it's really dealing with user error.

Second, the motor is overengineered for this shredder--it's not just the bare minimum, like with various Royal brand shredders that I've owned & used. There's actually a "power through it" button which you can press if the shredder stops because the sensor thinks you're shredding something too thick. For example, sometimes it thinks unopened mail (such as a credit card offer) is too thick, but you can power through it without causing any strain on the shredder. Another nice advantage to having an overpowered motor is that the thing runs very quietly. You can shred stuff in the same room as your office mates without bothering anyone. You could probably even use it at home without drowning out the sound of the TV.

Third, the shredder has a sensor which detects when the bin is full! While an overfilled bin is an annoyance (shreds fall everywhere when you pull it out), it's also probably the single least-suspected cause of shredder death. On one of our old shredders, I observed that when the bin gets too full, shreds get backed up and put extra strain on the motor as it tries to compact more shreds into the bin. When the shreds back up, they also start to put pressure on components which normally don't have pressure against them, and the pressure warps or breaks these components. At the same time, shreds get pressed into little nooks and crannies where they were never meant to go, eventually finding themselves in the gearbox with the motor. The wandering shreds then soak up all the lubrication, and some of them start to get jammed in the gears, burning out the motor. (I was able to return the previous shredder to "like new" performance by completely dismantling it and cleaning out all the shreds that had gotten into places where they shouldn't have been.) By preventing the bin from ever overfilling, the Fellow Shredder prolongs the life of the motor and other critical components.

One of my office mates tried abusing the shredder for half an hour to get it to jam. Eventually, he did succeed, but only by putting a stack of paper in sideways and tricking the shredder to suck the paper in anyway. Ultimately, the shredder gave up, and even the "power through it" button wasn't enough. He had to repeatedly hit the reverse and forward buttons, and manually tear pieces of the paper off of the jammed mess. But just keep in mind that this was the same guy who stuck peanut butter sandwiches and Doritos through our first office shredder three years ago. I'm convinced that there's no way you can accidentally break or jam the Intellishred.

My summer goal was to go through old boxes and files to get rid of the papers and clutter that were taking over my office. Having bought a great scanner, I decided to go digital for everything, but then I was left with the task of shredding old documents. I scanned and shredded so much that I broke my five year old Fellow shredder. Having had such a great experience with Fellow Shredder I decided to purchase another one. I looked online for reviews and finally settled on the Fellow Shredder PS-79Ci. At the Fellowes site, it didn't specifically say that this machines was for HEAVY home office/personal use...because I don't normally shred tons of paper...with the exception of my summer goal of cleaning out my home office. But it's totally fine. The shredder is relatively quiet. Like other reviews state, one can watch TV while shredding (total plus since I had a ton to shred)...and I love the fact that you can shred quite a bit of paper at the same time. The lights that indicate how much paper you can put in at one time is pretty useful. And the best part is, if you put too much paper in there (though the red light will go on), it will still shred it for you. The plastic bags that accompany this product aren't anything to write home about, so I wouldn't waste money on purchasing replacements. The basket is relatively easy to empty, and yes, you'll have the small shredded scraps of paper on the ground as you empty the basket, but I'm pretty sure that would be the case for all shredders with a basket. The wheels are a total bonus because I can easily move it from my office in front of the TV for my massive shredding chores. Just remember that you should use the shredder lubricant sheets to keep everything running smoothly. This product comes with a small bottle of oil, but the shredder lubricant sheets are less messy and I'm all about convenience and efficiency. I've had this product for about two weeks now and I'm completely satisfied with this purchase. I'm even more happy to know that with this Fellow shredder, I won't have to purchase a new one for at least five more years.

We have been shredding away bags of our unwanted receipts, bills, etc. and couldn't be happier with such a hard working and efficient shredder. I have also put UNOPENED credit card applications through it and it did the job great. I used to have to open the mail and take out the application portion to shred, but no longer!!! I just pop the whole thing in and it eats it up for me. I love this shredder! It even shreds credit cards and cd discs without any problem. The only drawback on this shredder is the fact that after continual use, it becomes overheated and you have to let the hardworking thing have a rest. Not unlike any of the rest of us, huh? Otherwise, this is a fabulous investment for the money and I give it a full 5 stars!!!

This Fellow Shredders PS-77Cs not only looks good, it performs just as well. The Fellow PS-77Cs does a fast and relatively quiet job shredding everything. The credit cards and CDs go into their appropriate slot effortlessly. It is a bit top-heavy, but seems very stable in position. It does have a viewing window to be able to tell when the wastebasket is full. Clear bags should be used to view the shredded contents of the wastebasket. It holds a fairly good amount if you push the shreddings down into the basket occassionally, just don't let the level get too high or it will spill when emptying the basket. Use common sense as to not overloading with too many sheets at a time. That will keep the motor from overheating. I have not had it overheat after using it frequently over the past two weeks. I would definately reccommend this Fellow Shredders to anyone for the home or small business and would buy again if need be. I did a lot of research before purchasing this Fellow Shredder model. It is a great price for it's power and capabilities. It is fast, quiet and efficient!

Wow! This is a really well engineered shredder. Rugged, powerful, quiet, fast, truly produces confetti, easily handles 12 sheets of paper, starts instantly when paper enters the slot (even just a single sheet), has a simple gauge to prevent feeding too many pages at once, shreds CDs and credit cards, has a window on the pull-out basket to see if it's full, has a touch-sensitive safety shut-off, has a thermal overload shut-off, paper slot faces forward and is wide enough to easily line up paper even when the shredder is under your desk, built to last and well worth the price. I replaced the old shredder in my office with a Fellow Shredders and was amazed at the difference. This Fellow Shredders Poweshred W-11C does an excellent job. I've only had the shredder for about a week, so I can't comment on its extended reliability. However, I can confirm that it does a great job with multiple sheets and credit cards. Some reviewers said it had a difficult time with credit cards. I didn't find that to be the case at all. I fed approx 20 credit cards through the shredder without it missing a beat. Also, I had a 20 inch stack of papers that had to be shredded. I fed the sheets, ranging from 1 to approx 8 sheets at a time into the shredder without a single hiccup. It's just my personal preference to not go to the stated maximum sheets (in this case 11) on any shredder so as to not strain the motor and prolong the life of the unit. Plus, the sheets feed through much more quickly, when you don't feed the maximum sheets allowed. I also purchased the shredder lubricant ([...]) in order to properly maintain the shredder and ensure the warranty (3 yr cutter warranty) isn't voided. I did lubricate the shredder a few times during my initial 20 inch stack run. I'm very pleased with this unit. In my opinion, it's the best bang for your buck for a non-commercial grade unit for home use. There are a lot of positive reviews on this unit on Amazon. After using the shredder, it is easy to see why so many people rave about the Fellow Shredders - Powershred W-11C. One last thing, the "easy lift" handle comes in very handy when it's time to empty the receptacle.

A well built shredder with a large bin and not so noisy operation. I would recommend this Fellow Shredders W-11C for light home use. Do not put more than 6-7 sheets at one time .. it may jam. Also, the shredding process is most effective if paper to be shredded has written material parallel to the top of the shredder i.e. put in an A4 size sheet along its long side. The Fellow Shredders seems well built and it is not as noisy as some of the others that I have seen. It is not very convenient to move the whole thing (shredder top + bin) to another place because it is not designed to lift the two together but I don't mind that too much as long as it works fine. The switches provided are convenient if you have small children or pets in the house.

I've had a couple other, cheaper, shredders before this one. With shredders, you definitely get what you pay for - and this Fellow Shredders W-11C is a deal!
