One-half hour.

On April 15, 2009, Microsoft announced that Exchange 2010 will have built-in support for archiving. Though Microsoft has been slow to reveal details about the new offering, its announcement is shaking the archiving market and the adjacent markets for e-discovery and compliance.

Customers are considering whether to adopt Microsoft’s solution and, if appropriate, whether to migrate away from currently deployed solutions. They are deferring purchases of archiving solutions until Microsoft clarifies its offering. And archiving, e-discovery, and compliance vendors are reevaluating their technology and sales messages.

In this webcast and its companion white paper, David Ferris cuts through the confusion about Exchange 2010 and explains what the product’s archiving features do, what they don’t do, and why there will continue to be a healthy market for third party archiving solutions. The event ends with a Q&A session.

Many organizations are interested in moving away from a world of separate systems for email, instant messaging, telephony, etc. Their vision is of integrated, or unified, communications technologies. The most-discussed unified communications offering is from Microsoft; here the major product components are Exchange, Outlook, Active Directory, Office Communications Server, and the Office Communicator client. These work alongside a third-party phone switch or PBX (a private branch exchange).

In this webcast, Ferris Research analyst Richi Jennings and Unison Technologies CMO Rurik Bradbury discuss the total cost of ownership (TCO) of Microsoft’s approach to unified communications. You learn how to model and estimate unified communications costs in your own environment. The event concludes with a Q&A session.

How do you calculate the TCO of Microsoft-based unified communications?

What are the main cost components?

How can you reduce the cost of Microsoft-based unified communications?

How do these costs differ from the costs of other, competing technologies?

One-half hour.

This press conference is designed to quickly give journalists the material they need to provide an authoritative update on spam technology. Two speakers present for 5 minutes each, followed by 15 minutes of Q&A.

Background

Ferris Research estimates that spam will cost $140 billion worldwide in 2008, of which $42 billion will be in the United States alone. Compared with Ferris’s 2007 estimates of $100 billion and $35 billion, the cost of spam has increased substantially over 12 months. This press conference by Ferris and Abaca Technology Corporation will address a number of issues relating to the proliferation of spam, including:

Who are the spammers behind this black market, and how do they operate so successfully?

A 95%, 96%, 97%, and even 98% spam catch rate sounds great to organizations being inundated by spam. But is such a solution really as effective as it seems on the surface?

If the catch rate is too low to effectively eliminate spam, are we giving spammers an economic incentive to continue their attacks?

An effective solution should result in a measurable decline in spam—and that’s not what’s happening worldwide. What’s behind the delay?

As spam volumes continue to grow, the need for a spam filter that consistently achieves significantly more accurate filtering with very few and easily identifiable false positives becomes more urgent. Is such a solution available on the market today?

Recipient reputation appears to be a promising new tool in the fight against spam. When incorporated into a system incorporating real-time centralized message rating, it is projected that very high levels of accuracy can be achieved. What kind of catch rate is possible?

Speakers

Richi Jennings, Lead Analyst, Email Security Practice of Ferris Research. Richi is Practice Leader for spam and boundary services. His main interests are Linux, security, spam, viruses (and other malware), large-scale enterprise deployments, TCO, and wireless. Richi has been involved with messaging and collaboration technologies since 1985. Previously, he was CTO at Samsung Contact, where he helped launch Samsung’s “Exchange on Linux” startup. Prior to that, he was Chief Architect for OpenMail at Hewlett-Packard. Richi has a bachelor of science degree in cybernetics and computer science from Reading University, England. In addition to his role at Ferris Research, Richi is an independent technology and marketing consultant specializing in email, Linux, wireless, and computer security.

Steve Kirsch, Founder and Chairman of the Board of Abaca Technology Corporation. Steve founded Abaca in 2005 with a vision to create the perfect email spam filter. He has been involved with the Internet and high-tech companies for more than 27 years. Since the early 80s, Steve has founded four successful technology companies. Prior to Abaca, he founded Propel Software, the leader in Internet and email acceleration. Prior to that, he founded Infoseek Corporation, which was acquired by Disney in November 1999. While at Infoseek, Steve was responsible for creating many of the company’s award-winning products, including the NetSearch service, Ultraseek Server, Infoseek Express, GO Guides, and GO Auction. Steve’s first start-up was Mouse Systems Corporation. Afterward, he founded Frame Technology, which was acquired by Adobe.

A retention policy is a plan for how long a type of electronic information should be retained before being deleted. Organizations vary considerably with regard to their retention policies. Some keep everything forever; others try to minimize the extent to which electronic information is stored. Organizations often define a retention policy but then ignore it in practice and retain the material indefinitely.

In this webinar, we discuss:

Laws and regulations that affect retention policy

Internal corporate policies that are likely to affect retention policy

Other things to consider when determining retention policy

How to define a retention policy (for example, who is involved and what are the responsibilities)

Corporate policies on what electronic material should be archived are in a state of flux. There’s confusion, for a variety of reasons:

Laws and regulations are being newly created, and it takes some years for their archiving implications to be understood.

Corporate policies are often not followed through in practice. For example, many types of documents are supposed to be deleted after a certain period, yet many never actually are.

Corporate legal departments push for the rapid implementation of draconian policies, which must frequently be adjusted as the implications are thought through.

There are conflicting reasons to archive material, such as compliance, the preservation of corporate knowledge, storage management, and the need for intelligent backup and recovery. Their relative importance varies over time.

In this webinar, Bob Little of RenewData, a leading provider of e-discovery and electronically stored information risk management services, talks with Ferris analyst David Ferris about selecting the right archiving policies. Topics include:

The pros and cons of archiving a given piece of electronic information

Current thinking on what electronic information should and should not be archived

The reasons for these policies

How archiving policies are evolving

As the success of the BlackBerry platform illustrates, email is the single most important application on most mobile devices used in business. However, providing technical support for mobile messaging is very demanding. For example, a lot of time is spent provisioning new devices, dealing with lost devices, and providing poorly integrated capabilities, such as archiving.

In this webinar, Ferris analyst Richi Jennings and Scott Young of Ensim, a leading provider of management software for unified communications and collaboration infrastructure, discuss the current state of mobile messaging support and how it is likely to evolve. Scott also presents Ensim’s automated provisioning system and explains how it simplifies mobile device support.

Ideally, transaction agreements — from drafts to confirmation — should be able to exist purely electronically. Today, however, confirmation often requires the transfer of a fax or a paper document containing a handwritten signature. Electronic signing is possible, but it’s generally not used.

In this webinar, Ferris Research senior analyst David Ferris and RPost CEO Zafar Khan discuss the state of electronic agreement confirmation and how it is evolving. Specifically, they discuss:

The benefits of electronic confirmation

What legally constitutes an electronic signature

The various techniques for signing an email and attachments

Advantages and disadvantages of the approaches

Preparing for future evidentiary needs

Technology purchase considerations

Notice provisions of contracts

Service requirements: ensuring that email is “legally received”

Khan also presents his company’s solution for electronic signature, electronic contracting, and legal proof of email delivery and content. RPost’s registered email services provide legal and verifiable evidence of the content and time that an email has been sent and received by anyone, anywhere in the world. The event concludes with a Q&A period.

The U.S. Federal Rules of Civil Procedure (FRCP) define procedures for U.S.-based litigation. They date from 1938 but recently have been updated to deal with electronic documents. Email is by far the most important of such documents.

There are 86 rules in all. Rule 26(f)--the Meet and Confer rule--requires the parties in a litigation to meet at an early stage to discuss the information they have and what they will share. Thus, when a subpoena arrives, organizations frequently must launch a highly disruptive emergency response project.

In this webinar, Ferris Senior Analyst David Ferris and Mark Reichenbach, Vice President of Client and Industry Development at MetaLINCS, discuss what 26(f) covers, how organizations should respond, and IT’s role. MetaLINCS CTO Chuck Williams also presents his company’s e-discovery software. The event ends with a Q&A period.

Important Questions Addressed by This Webinar Include:

How should the Meet and Confer process be organized?

How can it be done in the least disruptive way?

How can organizations best prepare for future subpoenas to minimize disruptions and costs?

In what ways is it hardest to comply with 26(f)?

How can early case analysis tools help the Meet and Confer process?

Classification is of great importance for regulations and policy compliance, e-discovery, and information leak protection. Typically, when it is determined that content falls within a category (a label such as “internal only,” “about the lawsuit with XYZ,” “porn,” or “HR policy on minority-owned business” that applies to an electric entity), specific actions are taken, such as blocking, third-party review, archiving, or encryption.

Classification may be performed manually, where the customer organization defines a taxonomy and users then choose which labels to apply. Or, more commonly, classification is determined automatically. Many vendors provide solutions in such fields as email archiving, ECM, e-discovery, information loss prevention, and content control.

In this webinar, Ferris Senior Analyst David Ferris and George Tziahanas, Vice President of Solutions for Orchestria, discuss what classification is, the main drivers for classification, the main classification approaches, the various vendors doing classification, technological challenges, and key trends. One hour.

With new spam and virus formats constantly being created, anti-spam and anti-virus engines are forced to contend with PDF, Excel, and ZIP files as well as whatever new formats spammers will invent next. Rather than constantly trying to predict and analyze the next big wave of undesired email, vendors are starting to implement reputation services, which identify good and bad senders. These services offer an additional outer layer of defense that can filter out massive amounts of malicious traffic at the network perimeter.

But how useful are these services for enterprise security and overall traffic management? What benefits can reputation services offer, and what are the drawbacks? How relevant is mail IP reputation to fighting blended threats that use both email and the Web?

In this Ferris Research webinar, Amir Lev, CTO of Commtouch, a leading provider of email security technology, and Ferris Analyst Richi Jennings explain and review the latest reputation technologies: RBLs, email accreditation, reputation aggregators, domain vs. URL reputation, and dynamic reputation filtering. Amir explains how reputation services can effectively fight even the most sophisticated spammer and phishing tricks and how this new tool can be integrated as an additional layer of email and Web security.

The webinar also introduces Commtouch’s GlobalView Reputation Service and highlights its benefits for both mail and Web security. The webinar includes time for Q&A, giving participants the opportunity to ask their own questions.

Webinar 724.

Important Questions Addressed by This Webinar Include:

What types of problems can be solved by reputation services?

What kinds of reputation services are available?

What are the pros and cons of each in terms of ease of integration, blocking rates, and classification errors?

Should more than one service be used?

How do reputation services complement other security solutions?

How real-time do the services need to be?

How useful are they for enterprise security and overall traffic management?
