BGMI introduces Ocean Friends Crate, including Sea Serpent set

Battlegrounds Mobile India, better known as BGMI, has introduced a new Ocean Friends Crate, which brings along aquatic-inspired skins and items for players. The new crate is now rolling out to players through a server-side update, which means you do not have to download the update.

As part of the Ocean Friends Crate, players get an all-new Sea Serpent set, which will be a part of the first open at 18 UC. BGMI has discounted the first crate opening by 70 percent on the original price of 60 UC. That means players can own the crate and its items for a much less price. If you decide to open the crate 10 times, there is an alternate option to pay 540 UC altogether instead of the original price of 600 UC.

The Ocean Friends Crate also includes a Manta Ray set, a Frog Prince backpack, and “other legendary outfits to amp up your battleground style.”

With the latest update, BGMI is giving players another reason to spend more time and engage with others, which is essential for the game to reach the stardom it once had. In 2021, Krafton launched BGMI as a replacement for PUBG Mobile, featuring censored elements and more restrictions to appease critics and the government. However, last year, the government asked Google and Apple to delist BGMI from their app marketplaces due to the same security reasons as those that caused a ban on PUBG Mobile.

The partial ban on BGMI was lifted earlier this year, however, as part of the government’s probation on the game. “This is a three-month trial approval of BGMI after it has complied with issues of server locations and data security, etc,” Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar said in a tweet in May. The conditions are similar to what the government provisioned for the comeback of PUBG Mobile as Battlegrounds Mobile India last year. While the minister did not explicitly mention the changes BGMI is likely to come, a previous report suggested Krafton may turn on the green-coloured spill as an alternative to blood by default and introduce a timer to keep a check on the time users spend playing the game.

The Indian Premiere League for this year concluded last night as Chennai Super Kings lifted the trophy after a gruelling match. While that may disappoint game fanatics, Krafton brings good news to people who remain engaged in playing one of the most popular battle royale games. Battlegrounds Mobile India, popularly known as BGMI, is now playable for all users on Android and iOS. This marks the expansion of the staggered rollout of the game that began a day before, i.e., May 29.

The new BGMI 2.5 Update brings a brand-new map called Nusa, in-game events, weapon upgrades, and new skins. It is available on both Android and iOS, according to the company.

The return of BGMI

After a year-long hiatus, BGMI has made a comeback. Krafton, the South Korean company that owns the publishing rights to the game, earlier this month said it has secured approval from the Indian government to release the game again on app marketplaces. The ban, which came into effect in June last year, caused Google and Apple to delist the game from their app stores, but there were no orders for Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) and Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to block access. Thus, the ban on BGMI was different from the ban on the original game PUBG Mobile. The relaunch is also slightly different. While the return of PUBG Mobile marked the change of the game’s name and some tweaks, the relaunch of BGMI is subject to a three-month trial.

Minister of State for Electronics and IT, Rajeev Chandrasekhar has clarified that the final decision to allow Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) to return to the country will only be taken after three months of a strict trial of the game. The minister said that the government will keep a close watch on other issues of “user harm, addiction, etc in the next three months before a final decision is taken”. That means that the government will closely monitor the game and its impact on the players over the course of three months. It will also ensure that Krafton has complied with the requirement to set up local servers for the game. If Krafton manages to allay the fears, the government is likely to give permanent approval to BGMI.

Who can play BGMI in India?

As mentioned, BGMI is being brought back to India with some conditions. As a part of those conditions, the playtime for users under 18 years of age has been restricted to three hours, while for all other players, this limit has been set to six hours every day. Furthermore, minor players, that is kids who are less than 18 years of age will require parental verification to be a part of the game.

Ever since Battlegrounds Mobile India announced its relaunch in India, fans were eagerly waiting to play the game. Although it was available for download through different channels, its servers were offline.

Now, BGMI has returned with more good news for its fans. It has announced via Twitter that the game will be available for preload from May 27 and it will be playable from May 29 onwards.

Interested gamers can download the game for Google Play Store or they can go to the BGMI website and select the AOS download option in the top right corner from where they will be redirected to the game on the Play Store.

The government of India has given three months of temporary approval to Battlegrounds Mobile India. During these three months, the game will be watched by the government and authorities will check the game to see if it breaks any rule.

New restriction coming to the game

Players under the age of 18 will have to register a parent or guardian before playing the game. Also, these users will only be able to log in to the game using OTPs. Krafton is also limiting the playtime of BGMI players under 18 to three hours a day.

Besides this, a daily spending limit of Rs 7,000 will be applied to prevent players from spending too much on the game. Krafton says that these new limits will help prevent addiction to the game.

Battlegrounds Mobile India History in India

BGMI was earlier available as PUBG in India. The Indian government banned PUBG in September 2020, when it blocked many apps linked to Chinese companies, including PUBG Mobile, which was run by Tencent Games in India. Then Krafton, a South Korean company that owns PUBG Studio, changed the name of the game and launched it as Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI).

The game was suspended again in India in July 2022 after the Home Ministry asked the IT Ministry to do so. Some reports say the ban happened because game servers were communicating with Chinese servers.

Buoyed by the return of its video game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) in India, on a three-month trial by the government, South Korean video game developer Krafton on Thursday announced its esports YouTube Channel and Instagram page for the country.

Called Krafton India Esports, the channel is aimed at fostering the growth of the esports ecosystem in the country, the company said in a statement.

“With our dedicated Esports channels and upcoming tournaments, we look forward to bringing engaging experiences and growing together with our gaming community in the country,” said Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO, Krafton Inc. India.

The company is hosting a series of ‘Road To Valor: Empires’ matches on May 26.

Players can participate in exhilarating matches against developers from the Krafton team where the winning player stands a chance to win 1000 gems as reward.

The company said it will organise developer vs player matches every Friday for its flagship titles, enabling gamers to challenge the game creators and showcase their skills.

Last week, The BGMI game returned to the country. The government said it will keep a close watch on the game for three months before finally approving it.

“We are highly grateful to the Indian authorities for allowing us to resume operations of Battlegrounds Mobile India,” Sohn had said in a statement.

Battlegrounds Mobile India, popularly known as BGMI, is back on the Google Play Store. Two days after Krafton announced it has secured the Indian government’s approval, Google has relisted the popular battle royale. That marks the relaunch of BGMI. However, iPhone users may have to wait as Apple has still not brought back BGMI to the App Store.

Last year, the government ordered both Google and Apple to delist Battlegrounds Mobile India after it found the app was prejudicial to the country’s sovereignty. The immediate ban, however, did not include orders to the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to block server access to the game. But for what it is worth, the ban suspended future updates to the game since it was no longer available on app marketplaces. The return of the game makes it accessible far and wide.

BGMI is not available for everyone yet

Battlegrounds Mobile India’s listing on the Google Play Store is about 735MB in size and would require the installation of additional files. However, it was not visible to everyone at the time of writing. The developer account on the Play Store also does not show Battlegrounds Mobile India, so it is possible that the battle royale is headed for an incremental rollout across the country. This means it is available to some users before a wider rollout takes place. Krafton has not specified any details about the rollout.

BGMI is on a trial

Last week, the South Korean company, which took the reins of its smash-hit battle royale in 2020 after PUBG Mobile faced a ban in India, said it is “a responsible South Korean organisation that abides by the law and has put in place several measures to ensure compliance with all applicable regulations.” While Krafton did not mention what it has done as part of its efforts to comply with Indian law, reports are rife that the latest version of Battlegrounds Mobile India comes with green-coloured spills turned on by default and a timer to stop prolonged gaming.

“We work tirelessly to ensure that India takes the lead in this domain by embracing innovative practices in collaboration with the gaming ecosystem to support, sustain and promote its growth,” Vibhor Kukreti, Head of Government Affairs, Krafton India said.

BGMI is back

The South Korean company Krafton on Friday announced that it will soon resume operations of the video game Battlegrounds Mobile India (BGMI) in the country. “We are highly grateful to the Indian authorities for allowing us to resume operations of Battlegrounds Mobile India,” Sean Hyunil Sohn, CEO of Krafton India, said in a statement. “We are excited to announce that Battlegrounds Mobile India will be available for download soon and we cannot wait to welcome you back to our platform,” he added.

The move came less than two years after the Indian government banned Krafton’s marquee offering PUBG in the country. Krafton later announced the launch of the BGMI game in May 2021. The Indian government then ordered Google and Apple to block the BGMI gaming app from their respective online stores under Section 69A of the Information Technology Act, 2000.

BGMI is coming back to app stores in India a year after ban

Krafton said Friday that it will reintroduce the popular battle royale Battlegrounds Mobile India through Google and Apple’s app marketplaces. The South Korean company, which took over from Tencent Games after the ban on PUBG Mobile in 2020, said it has received approval from the Indian government to resume operations of BGMI and the launch will happen soon.

“We are highly grateful to the Indian authorities for allowing us to resume operations of BATTLEGROUNDS MOBILE INDIA (BGMI). We would like to extend our gratitude to our Indian gaming community for their support and patience over the past few months,” said Sean Hyunil Sohn, chief executive officer of Krafton India, in a prepared statement. “We are committed to delivering exceptional products and services to our users in India and beyond, and we look forward to continuing our journey with you.”

What BGMI “unban” means for you and Krafton

By resuming operations, the company essentially means the Battlegrounds Mobile India apps will become available once again on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store. Last year, the Indian government ordered both app store owners to remove BGMI, but it never ordered the Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and Telecom Service Providers (TSPs) to block access to the game. This was contrary to the ban orders imposed on the original battle royale, PUBG Mobile, in 2020 due to its linkage to China.

That means that BGMI was never unavailable to play. Those who had it downloaded could still play it. However, since the game was delisted from the app marketplaces, no updates were possible. That means no new features or security patches. And because of the order Krafton, too, had stopped publishing new versions of the game, ending the only other possibility to install games using APK files. The bottom line is that game could still be played even though it lagged behind in terms of new features compared to PUBG Mobile.

The ban lift would mean you will begin receiving the feature and security updates. And if you are using a fresh device or have never previously played the game, you would be able to download BGMI on your Android and iOS devices.

For Krafton, this would mark the end of the struggle to bring back the game. The South Korean company, which owns the rights to the PUBG IP, has engaged with the Indian government through several means to keep its battle royale remain available in India. Will anything change?

Krafton has not said anything about changes in its official statement, but a report earlier this week suggested that the company would tone down BGMI even further. That includes turning the green-coloured spill as blood replacement by default and a stringent timer that would not allow players to spend as high as 24 hours on the game. There could be more changes, but Krafton has not confirmed anything yet.
