Brazil cotton body urges natural fibre focus in import debate

Abrapa is urging Brazil’s Congress to weigh natural fibres, domestic textile competitiveness and synthetic-fibre impacts as MP 1,357/2026 nears a vote.
The measure keeps a zero import duty on online foreign purchases up to $50; without approval in early September, the previous 20 per cent duty returns.
A proposed CIDE-Têxtil would tax imported finished textiles by synthetic-fibre content.

India needs to diversify import sources while strengthening domestic manufacturing, according to D K Srivastava, chief policy advisor of EY India.
As India’s non-oil imports, which accounted for 77.6 per cent of merchandise imports in FY26, remain heavily concentrated in China, there is a need for both source diversification and a targeted import substitution strategy, he said.

Why is PFY slipping despite rising crude, PTA and MEG costs?

Domestic China PFY fell 0.2-2.5 per cent across major grades even as crude, PTA and Asian MEG rose on renewed Middle East tensions.
Weak downstream demand, need-based mill buying and producer discounts are overriding feedstock cost pressure; healthy POY margins provide room.
If upstream costs stay firm, margin compression could end discounting, with POY margin erosion the key signal for PFY buyers
