Our family Favorite Fall tradition: Apple picking in California

Our family has been hitting up apple orchards since 2011, and it’s hands down one of our favorite fall things to do. We’ve checked out a bunch of spots around Southern California, and there’s always something new and fun to discover.

Usually, the first week of October is the sweet spot—cooler weather and great fruit. But we’ve also gone during opening week and were surprised by how much tasty fruit was already ready to pick!

This year, during opening week, we found not just apples but juicy peaches, berries, pears, and even loganberries. Bonus!

Apple season in California runs from late August through early December, with the best picks in September and October. Whether you’re after cool heirloom apples, beautiful orchards, or a fun family day, these places have you covered. Just a heads up—some orchards can sell out early and close before the season officially ends, so it’s always a good idea to call ahead or check their websites for the latest updates and reservation info.

If you haven’t tried apple picking yet, now’s the perfect time—fresh air, fall vibes, and fruit straight off the tree. Can’t beat that!

Graduation season means more than caps and gowns—it means memories in the making! Grad Nite at Disney California Adventure offers graduating seniors a night of thrills, music, and lifelong memories, all in the magical world of Disney. Whether you’re a student, a chaperone, or a parent cheering from home, this night is a milestone celebration.

How Students Can Navigate Grad Nite with Friends and Fun

Graduates, this night is all about celebrating your journey with your friends—but planning ahead helps make it extra magical:

1. Set a Meet-Up Spot Early

Disney is big—and easy to get separated in. Pick a central landmark (like the Carthay Circle Fountain or Pixar Pier) as a meet-up point in case phones die or the group splits up.

2. Prioritize Must-Do Rides

Make a list with your friends of 3–5 top attractions you want to ride. Guardians of the Galaxy, Radiator Springs Racers, and Incredicoaster usually top the list!

3. Use the Disneyland App - Add this ahead of time. (It will be helpful to download your ticket information.)

Check real-time wait times, mobile order food, and find bathroom locations. It’s a Grad Nite essential.

4. Charge Your Phone in Advance

Bring a portable charger. Between photos, texting, and checking ride times, batteries drain fast.

(Charging station is located at the Sonoma Terrace.)

5. Stick Together

Groups are more fun and safer. If you split, agree on meeting times and places—and don’t wander alone.

6. Respect the Rules

Disney wants you to have fun—but safely. Follow cast member directions, and don’t let one poor choice ruin an amazing night.

7. Wear comfortable clothing and bring a sweater for the evening.

8. FINAL TIP: Leave the park at least 1 hour before boarding the return bus. The lines to get to the shuttles are packed and it takes a least an hour to get to your school bus.

How to Navigate Grad Nite as a Chaperone (for Teachers & Parents)

Chaperoning a Grad Nite is both a privilege and a responsibility. Here’s how to keep the night smooth and safe—for you and your students:

1. Know Your Group

Learn students’ names, faces, and emergency contact details. Exchange phone numbers before arrival.

2. Create Check-in Points

Schedule group check-ins every 2–3 hours. Pick central spots that are easy to find even in crowds.

3. Wear Something Identifiable

A bright hat or team shirt helps students spot you quickly if needed.

4. Stay Calm, Stay Visible

Students may not come to you for every issue—but being approachable and calm helps prevent problems.

5. Communicate with Other Chaperones

Work together! Share notes, text updates, and stay connected in case your group merges or shifts.

6. Let Them Celebrate

You’re there to keep them safe, not to hover. Step back a little—Grad Nite is about student independence, too.

7. Take pictures and capture the fun event.

8. Leave early to board the your school bus. Allow at least 1 hour . The lines are long boarding the return shuttle. The shuttles drive passengers outside the park to a lot separate from the park. There you will find bus upon buses. Locate the Disney employees who will direct you to your bus. Chaperones will display school signs directing students to the appropriate bus.

How Parents at Home Can Support Their Teen’s Big Night Out

Even if you’re not attending Grad Nite, you can play an important role in making your child’s experience safe and unforgettable.

1. Talk About Expectations

Review safety basics—like sticking with their group, respecting park rules, and what to do in an emergency.

2. Pack Smart

Help them prep a lightweight backpack: water bottle, phone charger, snacks, ID, comfortable shoes, a hoodie, and cash/card.

3. Be Available, But Don’t Hover

Let them know they can call or text any time, but resist the urge to check in constantly. Show you trust them.

4. Celebrate When They Get Home

Stay up to greet them (even if it’s late!), listen to their stories, and relive the joy with them. That post-event chat can mean a lot.

Air Travel Suggestions

The nearest major airport to Detroit Lakes is Fargo Hector International Airport (FAR), located about 47 miles away. Here are some travel tips:

Transportation from the Airport: From Fargo, you can rent a car or take a taxi to Detroit Lakes. The drive takes about an hour and a half. Alternatively, Jefferson Lines operates a bus service from Fargo to Detroit Lakes.

Orange Picking at La Verne Heritage Foundation

Nestled in the foothills of the San Gabriel Valley, you will find a little slice of the past. A historical place host to the Weber House and the last acre and a half of working orange groves. Every January since our boys were small, we have been been picking oranges fresh from the tree. The oranges are the best kept secret in Southern California and we are sharing our love for the La Verne Heritage Foundation's events with our readers.

Each year, the La Verne Heritage Foundation offers tours and events for the entire family. From orange picking in January, to Spring Squeeze field trips in March, Hands on History in April and May, Summer Concerts in Heritage Park and don't forget the pumpkin patch field trips in October.

The oranges are always sun kissed sweet and making this outing a family and friends event creates memories that will be remembered a lifetime. As you walk through the iron gates at the entrance, the kind volunteers great you with 5 lb. mesh net bags for sale. This year, bags are $8 each (subject to change without notice). We always buy 3 or 4 bags and strategically stuff them full. It is very easy to get more than 5 lb of oranges in each bag with easily 15-20 pieces of delicious citrus.

Our family grab picking sticks the foundation provides and walk into the orchard. Pro Tip, pick oranges higher in the trees where the sun lights the tree tops for the largest and sweetest citrus. The La Verne Foundation also has a few grapefruit trees you can pick from. After filling our bags, we pull up a chair at the picnic table and enjoy an orange in the orchard.

On certain weekends, the foundation has extra volunteers available to provide tours of the Weber House. This is a beautiful maintained, 2-story farm house with all the nostalgia and history of the late 1800's. While you are there, the foundation has a a general store with lots of gifts for you or your family and friends. The store sells jams and jellies, olives, local honey Pyrex and much more. It is a little county store in the middle of the bustling Los Angeles metro.

Orange Picking occurs every Saturday in January for 3 to 4 weekends only or while supplies last. Hours are 9 AM to 3 PM and we recommend you arrive early as they get very busy. Last weekend, the foundation had over 700 families confirm their attendance.

Thomas Dambo "Trail of a 1000 Trolls" at the South Coast Botanic Garden through Jan 14th

Thomas Dambo is a Danish artist and storyteller who creates beautiful and fun sculptures and installations out of recycled materials. His vision is to create art that inspires people to explore nature, have adventures, and demonstrate that trash can be turned into something beautiful. Thomas's project is called “Trail of a 1000 Trolls”.

Thomas began by creating a series of six massive wooden sculptures called “Northwest Trolls: Way of the Bird King” in the Pacific Northwest region of the United States. The sculptures are made from recycled materials and are all different types of trolls. The project was years in the making and the trolls were installed at various points. The project became like a scavenger hunt to find them, experience them, and share photos of the giant installations on social media. The trolls have delighted adults and children alike and have become popular attractions.

The project is part of his ongoing, whimsical folklore project that’s sprouted more than 100 unique trolls across 17 different countries. He has placed his troll artwork on display in various locations around the world, including Denmark, Florida’s Pinecrest Gardens, South Korea, Puerto Rico, China, and Australia.

Now through Jan 14th, you can see Thomas's Troll artwork at the South Coast Botanic Garden located at 26300 Crenshaw Boulevard in Palos Verdes, CA 90274. We took a field trip to this amazing exhibit for a stroll through the beautiful Botanical Garden where Thomas has his masterful artwork on display for all of Southern California to enjoy.

Dambo has been building and creating with wood since the age of five. He uses reclaimed materials such as wooden pallets, fragments of demolished wooden buildings, broken branches, and fallen trees to create his trolls. For each one, he weaves themes of honoring the land and protecting nature into its story. He pre-makes the heads for his giant trolls and later adds them to sculptures he erects in outdoor locations around the world. The trolls are designed to be interactive and engaging, and they encourage people to explore the natural world around them.

It takes Thomas and his team of volunteers several months to create one troll art piece. The number of volunteers needed to make one art piece varies depending on the size and complexity of the sculpture. For example, he worked with 22 troll builders to create 10 sculptures that stretch from the East Coast to the West Coast of the United States.

Thomas' trolls art project is a beautiful and inspiring example of how art can be created from recycled materials. His work encourages people to explore nature, have adventures, and foster a greater sense of environmental responsibility.

In addition to this amazing artistry, you can take your family on a nature walk abound by thousands of plant, flower and tree species. The South Coast Botanic Garden is an 87-acre botanical garden located in the Palos Verdes Hills, in an unincorporated area of Los Angeles County, California, United States, about 10 miles south of Los Angeles. The garden has more than 2,500 different species of plants from as far away as Australia, the Mediterranean, and southern Africa. The garden is situated in Sunset’s Zone 23, one of the most favored growing areas in the world. The wide variety of plant life provides food and shelter to an abundant wildlife and bird population, and over 200 species of birds are sighted annually.

The garden has several exhibits that showcase different types of plants. Some of the current exhibits include:

The Living Wall: A vertical garden that features a variety of plants, including ferns, succulents, and flowering plants.
The Garden for the Senses: A garden designed to stimulate all five senses, with plants that have different textures, colors, and fragrances.

The Fuchsia Garden: A garden that features a collection of fuchsia plants, including some rare and unusual varieties.

Dia de los Muertos, also known as Day of the Dead, is a traditional Mexican holiday that is celebrated annually on November 1st and 2nd. The holiday is a time to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away. Here’s a brief overview of the holiday:

Origination:

The holiday has its roots in ancient Aztec culture, where it was believed that the dead could return to the living world for one day each year. The Aztecs would celebrate the lives of their deceased loved ones with offerings of food, drink, and flowers.

History:

After the Spanish conquest of Mexico in the 16th century, the holiday became more closely associated with the Catholic All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. Today, it is celebrated throughout Mexico and in many other parts of the world.

Significance:

Dia de los Muertos is a time to celebrate life and death. It is believed that the spirits of the dead return to the world of the living for one day each year to be with their families and friends. The holiday is a way to honor and remember loved ones who have passed away.

Important aspects of the holiday:

One of the most important aspects of Dia de los Muertos is the creation of an altar, or ofrenda, which is used to honor deceased loved ones. The altar typically includes photographs of the deceased, candles, flowers (especially marigolds), food, and drink. Other important aspects of the holiday include sugar skulls (calaveras), which are decorated with colorful icing and used as offerings on the altar, and papel picado, which are colorful paper cutouts that are hung up around the altar. Add incense, water (to quench thirst after a long journey), salt (to purify and cleanse), and personal items that belonged to the deceased to help make your altar more personal. My wife and I visited a local Southern California farm to get our freshly cut Marigolds for set up of our altar.

Visiting the California Botanical Garden

The California Botanic Garden is a botanical garden located in Claremont, California, just south of the San Gabriel foothills. The garden is spread across 86 acres and is the largest botanic garden dedicated to California native plants. It has curated collections of more than 22,000 California native plants, some of which are rare or endangered. The garden displays about 2000 taxon of California plants and includes those native to the California Floristic Province.

The garden has several special features that make it a must-visit destination. It has a unique fruit grove, a massive 11,000 square foot organic vegetable garden, the Channel Islands garden, an extensive cycad collection, a conifer collection, a palm grove, community gardens, and a children’s playground. The garden also offers events and classes throughout the year that celebrate and explore our connections to California native plants and the larger natural world. Some upcoming events include:

Reinventing yourself for 2021

Day 290 since we started shelter in place.

My word for 2021 is REINVENTING!

In a few short weeks, all will be different because we will have a new president and a vaccine to fight THE PANDEMIC. In a few months, spring will bring with it a glimmer of hope that life will be normal again. One thing is for sure, change is heading our way in a consistent and rapid manner. We will need all the patience and compassion that is left in us to survive and move forward.

To navigate it all, it seems that new skills are necessary in the POST PANDEMIC era. This is where reinventing oneself is crucial to surviving.

Here is where you should start:

Write down your goals and dreams for the future and look at it everyday.
Create a timeline
Calendar time to plan your reinvention
Find your strengths and explore how to use them to your advantage.
Identify your weakness and be honest with yourself. Ask yourself what needs to change now to improve yourself.
Network with your family and friends. Ask for what you need.
Learn a new trade: Sewing, plumbing, coding etc.
Explore your hobbies
Declutter your home and office
Pray or meditate everyday for 15 minutes
Walk or do exercise to remove stress

Remember to be kind and patient with yourself. Reinventing oneself takes time and changes do not happen overnight. Each step of the way, celebrate your successes. Learn from the mistakes and do not repeat them. The process can be a fun adventure.

DAY 210 - MID-PANDEMIC

This past year has been extremely strange, stressful, memorable and life altering. As you know, the pandemic shelter in place began in mid- March and things have not been the same. It has been chaotic between the store shortages, long lines to get into grocery stores and closures of most of your favorite stores and eateries. Trying to keep life as normal as possible, we visited the pick-your-own blueberry farm in late May. It was an outdoor event that was full of families trying to get out to decompress with their loved ones. It would be another two months before we could feel safe enough to go to the raspberry farm to pick fruit. These two outings made us feel a little bit better about the future. In a normal year, we average about 3 field trips per month, frequenting factory tours, museums, gardens, amusement parks and other social gatherings not to forget high school and club sporting events. It has been a little disappointing not being able to freely field trip or travel. There are have been bad days and good days during this year. Some days I need a reminder that soon all will go back to normal and "This too shall pass."

I would like to share my words of encouragement that I write to myself when I need a little pick me up.

This too shall pass!
Look to the future not the past.
Things don't stay the same. Change will come soon.
It does not rain forever. The sun will be here soon.
Happiness is a choice.
Do not give up because success is just around the corner.
Will it matter in 5 years?
Love can move mountains.
