Occult melodrama from the 70s starting George Hamilton as a sailor trying to prove his brother was wrongly executed for a crime he didn’t commit – only to be drawn into a nightmarish realm of supernatural horror. Set in the 30s this movie captures the pulp feel of the early 20th century horror scene.

This TV pilot features a reporter who, after a near death experience, hears the voices of the recently dead who urge him to protect their loved ones from supernatural horrors. I haven’t seen any other episode or copy of it so this truly is a hidden treasure. Moody and creepy this occult monster hunter strikes is far better than today’s horror.

Bigfoot – The Mysterious Monster

This shlock documentary from the mid-1970s is surprisingly scrupulous in it’s sourcing. I remember seeing this on television once and having it scare the daylights out of me. A vast difference from the touchy feely PETA influenced cryptozoology of today this harkens back to a time when people knew that an eight foot tall man ape wandering around the woods was something to be afraid of, not a new friend. The narration by Peter Graves adds the right touch of authority to what is otherwise a documentary style 50s Sci-Fi monster movie. The Blair Witch Project owes a great deal to this movie.

Wild 70s made for tv occult fare with Dack Rambo starring as a writer who must team up with an excoriate to battle a group of devil worshipers. Features a young Kim Catrall and is very entertaining if you love the genre and that time period.

Second only to the Charlton Heston classic The Omega Man Price’s Last Man on Earth is an atmospheric masterpiece that fars surpasses the Will Smith movie released in the last few years. The Pandoras were an early 80s garage punk band that are now shamelessly imitated by blander ripoffs like The Donnas. Maverick Entertainment’s Doomed is much maligned as a plot-less convict vs zombie chase fest set in an alternate future where prisoners compete for pardons and cash on a reality TV show called Survivor Island. I think it’s a fairly entertaining fun film that takes the “who is the real monster” political commentary so often found in zombie films to absurd enough lengths to make the movie subversive. Are they mocking the brain dead Hollywood anti-hero formula? You decide and enjoy:

Eric Koenig’s The Lurking Fear

Animator Eric Koenig made this homage to Lovecraft last year and it’s really quite entertaining. It has little to do with the Lovecraft story of the same name but Lovecraft fans and horror hounds in general will love this raucous jaunt into cosmic terror – and comedy.
