Aniplex recently announced that they would be selling the Fate/Zero box for $498.98. If you order from Rightstuf, you can get it for 369.99, which is still pretty absurd. It made me think about how much I'd be willing to spend on one show. I mention on the next episode of the fightbait anime podcast that I'd spend $300 on a complete Yoshiaki Kawajiri Blu-Ray collection if it was jammed full of extras, but I had trouble thinking of anything else.

What's the most you'd be willing to spend on an anime, and what would you have to get for your money? Similarly, what's the most expensive thing currently in your collection. If you have all the singles of one show, you can count that as one item if you want. So if you spent $30 per disc of Koi Kaze, that would mean you spent $120 on that show. Or if you a super rare Inuyasha wall scroll signed by Rumiko Takahashi that you spend $1000 on, you could count that too.

News: Madoka Magica Film Project Announced (UPDATED)!

It will be announced in this Thursday's issue of Monthly Newtype magazine that a Puella Magi Madoka Magica film project is underway. No other details have been made available.

As a fan of the series, I have my fingers crossed for something amazing. However, the asshole in me knows that it will probably be a rushed compilation film.

UPDATE: The project will consist of three films. The first two will recap the series; the third will be a continuation of the series.

News: Rurouni Kenshin Shin Kyoto-Hen to Play in Theaters December 7!

It will be announced in the December issue of Jump Square magazine that the first half of the new Rurouni Kenshin OVA will run in select Japanese theaters for one week.

It's hard to say whether this will be worth checking out or not. Rurouni Kenshin is a wonderful franchise when it wants to be. And with Kazuhiro Furuhashi back in the directors chair, good things can happen. This is the man that directed the Samurai X: Trust & Betrayal, after all.

On the other hand, he's also the sick son of a bitch that directed the ultra-boring Samurai X: Reflections.

I, unfortunately, could not join my friends this year, and I never have thus far. Economic excuses aside, it’s also been the price of my own cowardace. I want to experience everything there is at Dragon*Con, but as anyone who’s been can confirm, that is simply impossible. I’m overwhelmed by event schedules, peer synergy, and the fear of missing rare opportunities.

Tenchi Muyo!: Ryo-Ohki is an OVA buried deep in the ancient catacombs of my anime past. As such, I retrieved another relic from that era: Matt “@PhantomFHarlock” Kraft.

It’s been a while since Matt’s been in Neverland; a metaverse innocent to concepts like career, parenting, or mortgage…where the landscape is painted with cartoons and poor eating habits. But for Tenchi Muyo, I could think of no better expert.

Matt also provides us with insight to how a geek negotiates pastimes with family responsibilities. Raising children affects how we view our own hobbies… Sure, we “turned out okay”, but how will the current generation of media mold the clay of our offspring’s minds? Did we have it better, or do they? Matt gives his best guess.

Oh yeah, and there’s that whole Alpha Counter thing we did.

This podcast is a few days late because I'm lazy. Just another reason why you should join us for the live show. I don't really remember everything that we talked about anymore. I'm sure it was the usual stuff. Ryan didn't say much. Tony was annoying. Sean was neutral. I was insensitive about everything. If you found us through I Just Had a Terrible Thought, this isn't the best place to start. It's funny. Really funny at times. But it's also really annoying at other parts. The last 20 minutes or so is made of gold, however, so you better at least listen to that. It started out as a us riffing about a man that planned to dress up as a bear to kill his girlfriend, but somehow turned into girls squirting kool--aid out of their pussies. There's also a pretty good riff in the middle about stealing iPods by shoving them up the asses of people with Down Syndrome. We're terrible people. We already know that. Our outtake podcasts are often complimented as our best work, which sounds counter-intuitive. Why would we (or, more accurately, I) edit out our “best” material from each episode? I begin to question my own judgement–of topical relevance, comedy, and my place in the universe–but within a picosecond my ego reminds me that I’m never wrong.

The magic of converting what was once chaff into vital stuff is context, I believe. A variety bag of assorted candies will be consumed faster than a 1-pound dedicated bag of Tootsie Rolls. Except for Dum Dums, no one eats those. Well, except maybe strippers, whom I assume buy them in bulk instead of wasting time sifting through Sweet Tarts and Double Bubbles. Costco would be wise to stack their Dum Dum pallets next to their drums of pole wax.

Technically there has been a forum for the past couple weeks, but I wasn't happy with the interface so I switched back to phpBB. One of the reasons I did this was so I could enable a mobile compatible theme. I don't know about you, but the only time I post in forums is when I'm bored at work. The only downside to starting a new forum is that you have to register for an account. I know that seems obvious, but with Mingle Forum you didn't have to if you already had an account with my site. It just worked. However, if you use the same email address that you used to register for fightbait.com, the two accounts will merge into one. If you use a different email address than it will automatically create an account on my site which you can use to comment on blog posts.

We discussed Fist in our podcast debut; in a time when there was Madness, but the Method was still to be sorted out. Now we return to the show to give it its due homage in a full retrospective series we like to call “The Gist of the North Star”.

NOTE: From September thru December we’ll be adjusting our release schedule so that new podcasts episodes publish every other week. Both Kevin and my workloads have ramped up, Kevin has some family business to tend to, and the holiday season is just always especially busy for me. We intend to still record as much as we can, but the schedule adjustment will allow us some much-needed elbow room while still providing our listeners with regular content.

The good news is that this will likely free us up for side projects, so you can expect morewritten articles on the website and guest appearances on other podcasts.

Come the beginning of the new year, we expect to return to our weekly schedule; rested and ready to dole out the harshness.

I can remember when I was in junior high being ridiculed and mocked for appreciating such things as cartoons and the Sci-Fi Channel. Rather than closet my passion, I wore my geekiness on my sleeve with pride. There were giggling girls and jocular jocks perpetuating the stigma that my interests were contrary and socially unacceptable. I ignored them and soon found my true friends that shared my hobbies. As for those who scoffed, some of them probably grew up while others continued to remain stuck in their ways believing that the label of geek is a mark of shame. One of those people is Alyssa Bereznak, an editor at Gizmodo, who wants to call you geeks out.

According to her blog article, Alyssa setup a profile on OKCupid and went out with Jon Finkel, a hedge fund manager. He seemed like a nice and normal guy until, to her shock and dismay; he was a world champion of Magic the Gathering! And, get this, he STILL plays it! What a freak! Why doesn’t OKCupid do background checks on these people so women can avoid such losers? How many other creepers are on this site? Lawyers that read Harry Potter? Doctors that watch Star Trek? Why is the world filled with such despicable people? Apparently Alyssa thinks that such hobbies should be displayed on OKCupid for judgment in the same way you inform potential dates that you are divorced or have a kid. I guess there wasn’t a checkbox in the profile setting for playing Magic the Gathering.

I’m sure most of you are thinking that this has to be some kind of troll post, written specifically to get the geeks mad and increase viewership. Unfortunately, Gizmodo is not known for such hoaxes and even if this were a personal troll attempt by Alyssa, her integrity as a writer has been permanently tarnished by this story. If you can’t dig someone else’s interests, that is okay. What isn’t okay is calling a particular person out on this and comparing his weird-to-you hobby with Jeffrey Dahmer. Keep in mind Jon didn’t exclusively talk about Magic, try to convince Alyssa to get in on a tournament or even whip out his deck in front of her.

But what pushes her post over the edge of absurdity was this statement:
“Maybe I'm an OKCupid asshole for calling it that way. Maybe I'm shallow for not being able to see past Jon's world title. I'll own that. But there's a larger point here: that judging people on shallow stuff is human nature; one person's Magic is another person's fingernail biting, or sports obsession, or verbal tic.”

Human nature? THAT is your excuse for acting like a dick to somebody for one particular hobby? There is human nature and there is human decency. Human nature is not an acceptable response for acting like a bitch and writing an unprofessional, piece of shit article to chastise the passion of others. So you were put off by somebody enjoying a major card game you don’t like. Did you really think you could go online to a site like Gizmodo to post about it and expect people to sympathize with your plight? What color is the sky in your world?

According to Alyssa’s Seinfeld logic, we are free to be judgmental of others for anything no matter how petty. With that in mind, allow me to retort. Alyssa Bereznak is an uptight, bitchy writer who brings too much of her personal opinion to validate shame towards others. Her high standards of shunning another person for something as miniscule as a trading card game and calling him out for this ‘fault’ bares the social mentality of a preppy high-school student. This is the type of person that saw the plot of Revenge of the Nerds as a fall from grace. She has painted herself as an embarrassing babbler to not only fans of Magic the Gathering but the entire online journalism community in general. If anyone reading this is still hiding in the closet heeding the message of Alyssa’s ramblings, do not take heed of her slander. Let your geek flag fly. People like Alyssa are quickly becoming the minority, drowning in a sea of their own ignorance. This whole ordeal was a pathetic cry from those who will not accept good people as good people based on what they play, read, write and watch. There are good women out there for you dudes who will accept you without judging your geeky passion. Alyssa is not one of those people. She is nothing more than a shallow person who will soon be ostracized from the geek and journalism community.

I’m familiar with the Duke University station, having DJed there myself briefly last summer. It’s a memory I cherish, however I’d be hesitant to return to the studio. I was in the process of testing the capabilities of Mixlr when I decided that the best thing I could do was read a story about a girl getting fucked by a tiger. I originally found this inexplicably while searching for tiger cum on Google. I recorded a reading back then, but ended up trashing the audio because I didn't feel like editing out all the laughter. This time I did it in one take. The only problem is that the audio got screwed up somehow so I sound like I'm 13. This, however, only adds to the absurdity. Hopefully the pitch shift was just a fluke and wasn't caused by the Mixlr client.

A Cheerleader's Duties

Eighteen year-old, blond, cheerleader captain Leah waved to the other girls as they got into Sandy’s car. Kimberly rolled down the back window and asked, "You sure you don’t want me to stay and help Lee?"

"No," Leah answered. "You know Brad will be waiting at the party for you, just go and have fun. I’ll be along later."

"Okay, see ya then," yelled Kimberly as the car pulled away.

Leah watched only for a moment as the car sped out of the lot, then shut and locked the door. She really did want to get to the party so she’d better get to work. One of the duties of the cheerleaders at West Ridge High School was taking care of the school mascots and since the school’s sports teams were nicknamed Bengals, that meant taking care of tigers.

Several years ago a wealthy alumnus had set up funding for a nearby animal research park on condition that the park provide the school with live tigers during football seasons. At first the tigers were merely
displayed at the games in cages but recently that had changed.

The present pair had been acquired by the park from a circus, and since they were already trained they had been gradually worked into half time shows. They had been trained to do a few stunts with the cheerleaders and Leah had worked with them all of her four years at school, until she had become quite used to being around them. As captain of the cheerleaders Leah took her mascot caretaking duties seriously, which was why she stayed behind and sent the other girls on to the party.

Practice had run late and the athletic facility under the football stadium’s grandstand was deserted. The facility contained coaches’ offices, locker rooms, a weight room, showers, and laundry equipment for washing towels and uniforms. It also contained the rooms in which the tigers were kept during football season.

The male, officially called Rajah although his real name was Ralph, was kept separate from the female, Nikki, especially for times such as this, as it was believed Nikki was in heat. For this reason also, Nikki would not participate in the remaining half time shows for this season.

The tigers were fed in the mornings but Leah had to make sure that there was enough of the pre packaged "Feline Diet" out of the freezer and available. She checked the supplies and quickly assured herself that there was a sufficient amount thawed and ready in the cooler. All she had to do now was make sure the tigers were ok, secure, and had water for the night.

She went into Nikki’s room first. Part of the room was caged off. Nikki’s water bowl was only about half full so she got the small hose from the wall and started to fill the bowl through the bars. For some reason Nikki decided to do some spraying of her own, surprising Leah by backing against the cage bars and spraying the poor girl with urine. Leah almost turned the hose on Nikki, but quickly realized that wasn’t a good idea. Instead, she got out of the room.

In the small hallway Leah was furious. She reeked of cat pee and she still wanted to go to the party. She could stop by her home and change but that would take at least an extra hour. Leah fumed until a solution struck her. She could simply toss her clothing into one of the big washing machines, used for washing towels and uniforms, then into one of the dryers. It would still take some time, but not nearly as much as driving home.

She quickly stripped off her jeans and t-shirt along with her panties and bra and tossed them into one of the washing machines. Fortunately her shoes were dry so she just left them on the floor in front of the washer and tossed her socks in with the other clothes. Believing in economy, she also loaded in a pile of dirty towels to fill the machine, then started it.

She still smelled strongly of cat urine and it was sticky as it dried on her skin. She had plenty of time while the clothes were in the wash so she grabbed a clean towel and headed to the showers. The girl’s locker room was all the way at the other end of the building so she decided to use the visiting team boy’s showers as they were right next to the laundry area. Just before turning on the water she remembered that she still hadn’t checked on Ralph and she decided to see to him before her shower.

Leah’s sense of duty to her charges was about to lead to her undoing. Naked, and not realizing that Nikki had left her smelling exactly like a female cat in heat, she padded to Ralph’s room. When Ralph seemed more pleased than usual to see her, the big cat rubbing up against the bars and positively purring, she attributed it to his overturned and empty water bowl.

The bowl, heavy stainless steel embedded in concrete, was difficult to tip, but somehow the big cat had managed. Unless Leah could right it, he’d be awfully thirsty tonight. Grabbing a broom Leah tried to lever the heavy bowl upright but the smooth concrete sides of the bowl offered no purchase for the wooden stick.

Leah was growing frustrated and annoyed. She thought that at most she would spend a half hour or so taking care of the cats and it had already taken more than that. Still determined to make it to the party, she left Ralph’s room long enough to put the wash load into one of the dryers, then returned.

Leah spent a few more minutes poking at the water bowl with the broom, getting even more frustrated by the fact that Ralph insisted on getting in her way by rubbing against the bars right next to her. At last she became annoyed enough to make another fateful decision. She would just have to get in the cage and set the bowl upright.

For four years Leah had watched the professional animal trainers working with the big cats and all the girls had even been taught some of the hand signals and gestures they used to control the beasts for use in the shows. There had never been any sort of incident and Leah felt supremely confident in her ability to control the cats.

She backed away from the bars and used some of the commands she had learned to get Ralph to move to a corner of the cage farthest away from the water bowl and lay down, although his tail continued to lash back and forth. She unlatched the door and entered the cage, shutting it behind her. Ralph started to rise as she entered but she quickly got him to lie down again.

Sure now that she could command the cat, she went to the water bowl and, despite it being heavier then she had thought she was able to flip it upright. The problem was now that having been flipped over twice, it was far away from its usual place. She gave it a shove but the heavy bowl refused to budge.

Determined to get this done right and still get to the party, she dropped to all fours so she could push the heavy bowl. She gave the bowl a shove, moving it about half the required distance, and then crawled forward, her backside facing Ralph, to get ready for another shove.

Concentrating on getting the bowl into position, she didn’t notice Ralph rise from his position and move up behind her until, poised to give the last push, she suddenly felt his hot breath on her bare butt. She froze, hands on the rim of the water bowl, knees conveniently slightly spread in preparation to push. She wanted to turn around and yell at him, to force him back to his corner but she was afraid that a sudden move would cause him to attack so she forced herself to remain still while she tried to think of a way out of this mess.

Ralph however, didn’t need to think. This female had quite obviously positioned herself to mate and she smelled strongly of a tiger in estrus. Editorial: Cyberbully OR After-School Specials Gone Wrong

Last month, ABC Family aired a made-for-TV movie focusing on the growing issue of cyber-bullying. Developed as a co-production between ABC Family and Seventeen Magazine, the film follows a teenage girl named Taylor who is targeted by school bullies on a social networking site. The educational intent of the program was to “delete digital drama”. Such a venture possessed the potential to be a relevant after-school special for today’s net-centric youth. Interestingly enough, the movie is educational…but not for its intended purpose.

Cyberbully is an eye-opener to teenagers and parents about how cyber-bullying is such a ridiculous issue. Though intended to be a serious drama that perhaps from the perspective of a teenager would make sense, the crisis of the film is laughable to those of us who can take a written punch online. Taylor, the main character, is subjected to being called a slut, accused of harboring STDs and mocked in videos of girls from school impersonating her with cut-out masks. This string of online mockery reaches a boiling point when Taylor threatens to kill herself since people won’t stop making fun of her online. Laughable as this is to someone like me, I understand that such a scenario is entirely possible. In that aspect, Cyberbully succeeds at displaying a realistic depiction of cyber-bullying albeit not the most extreme.

However, the movie wants to have a happy ending and the solution to the problem is so utterly preposterous that it negates any real lesson learned. Cyberbully ends with Taylor attending group therapy where she learns to stand up to bullies by making a hokey stand in the cafeteria. Meanwhile, Taylor’s mom convinces state lawmakers to pass laws against cyber-bullying. So apparently the threat of cyber-bullying can be extinguished by bitching to the government and telling the bullies they’re not cool. Despite the realism in that several states have passed anti-cyber-bullying laws, both of these solutions are too fantastical to actually be effective in reality. After the climax, the film devolves into complete fantasy as the message becomes muddled and irrational.

At one point in the movie, the father of the wasp-like student trolling Taylor is painted as the bad guy by defending his daughter’s right to free speech. Granted, he acts a bit dick-ish in not hearing all the facts of the case, but his point is actually valid. So what does Taylor’s mom do when that ‘evil’ man shuts the door on her? She complains about it to the state government to pass a law. Think about that for a moment: an anti-cyber-bullying law. How exactly does that work? What is the penalty for such an act? What is intended as cyber-bullying? How do you differentiate between defamation of character and humorous ribbing? Do you really want such hard decisions to be left up to the government? I can’t wait for that TV-movie when we try to take that law OUT of the government.

Back in my day, we had REAL bullying where fellow students physically harassed you and stole your belongings. Where was the government then? The closest thing we had to cyber-bullying was name calling. I couldn’t tell you how many times I was referred to as ‘four-eyes’ and ‘geek’ with little I could do for reprimanding their behavior. Unlike this issue, however, I didn’t try to kill myself or cry to mommy-government to fix the problem. I was forced to come up with my own means of effective retaliation with witty wordplay. It took some experimenting, but I eventually got the hang of it and rose above being broken by mere slang. But not in the way that Taylor interacts at the ending with a ‘you’re-not-so-cool’ demonstration. Trust me, kids: that display is NEVER effective. You’ll get your ass mocked twice as hard for doing that.

I kept laughing at Taylor’s reactions throughout the movie in hopes she would get the point. She narrowly misses the concept as her world turns into a friendship-is-magic play with a fake ending. The lesson she should’ve learned is this: grow up! Somebody called you a slut online? Deal with it. And I don’t mean with pills and razor blades. Grow a dick, learn to take criticism and stand up for yourself without looking like a loser. There are much more dangerous things you can do online that would harm you a million times more than someone spamming your wall with ‘faggot’. Real-life bullying is a much bigger issue than this pathetic excuse for abuse. Getting punched in the face hurts a lot more than being called a ‘herpes whore’.

If there's one thing that Clamp is known for other than creating popular manga series, it's putting them on indefinite hiatus. For many fans, X/1999 will come to mind first. But for people like me, its the lesser known, Legal Drug.

Legal Drug is a super gay, super weird, detective story. The late Toykopop released the three volume series when I was still in high school. I bought all of them because of the pot leaf on the cover. It wasn't until later that I found out it was a boy's love title. By then I was already hooked on the bizarre story.

Because the series just stops, I kept my eye out for the next volume for several years. No joke. I finally looked it up online only to find that it was halted because the magazine it ran it went out of business. Nevertheless, I loaned it to everyone I knew so they could share my pain.

This morning's announcement is a little ambiguous. It's hard to say whether they're starting over or continuing where they left off. It didn't run long enough to get into a major plot arc, so either route would work in this case.

Is it possible that the Dreamboard investigation was the catalyst for Oe's demise? According to his ex-employer, they've been tracking him for a while, so the recent kiddie porn scandal could have scared them into making a final decision.

In order to become a member of Dreamboard you have to provide pornographic images of children under the age of 11. The more images a member shares, the more access they're given to the archive. If a member goes 50 days without providing a new image, their membership is terminated. Authorietes believe Dreamboard to be responsible for circulating nearly 123 terabytes of child pornography.

How in the shitting fuck does something like this happen? Let's ignore the kiddie porn angle for a second--where the fuck do you host a highly illegal website? The webmaster is likely running the site on a private server, but they have to go through an ISP to get it online, right? I don't know that much about the internet. For all I know, it's easy as shit to conceal yourself in a situation like that.

But more importantly, how do you make it so only fellow criminals can access your site? Do they have to type the damn Konami Code into Google? You don't just submit your pedo forum to Stumbleupon and hope that the FBI doesn't notice. The creator probably had to seek out underground porn rings and pass out tutorials on how to access his blog! I wonder if you can post flyers on the wall at a place like that.

Geek School: Fantastic Planet (1973)

For those who only have a working knowledge of anime, manga and video games, I present Geek School: My feeble attempt at injecting some culture into the anime/otaku/weeaboo community. So gather round, kids, as this elderly 20-something imparts his knowledge of geeky elements you should probably know about.

When referring to the technique of cut-out animation, it’s hard not to think of Terry Gilliam’s bits from Monty Python or even Matt and Trey’s early work on South Park. It is a cost-effective measure that is often seen in the same light as Flash. But any medium can excel if used appropriately and with skill. Case in point, Fantastic Planet is an animation classic that may be the best use of cut-out animation ever made (no offense, Gilliam).

This surreal vision takes place on the planet Ygam filled with weird aliens known as the Traags, a race so large in comparison that humans are pets to them. The Traags are blue creatures with webbed ears and large red eyes. The humans are called Oms and the ones that aren’t raised as pets are considered wild and randomly exterminated by the Traags. Tiva, a child Traag, takes in an infant male Om she names Terr. As Tiva grows and learns the ways of the Traggs, Terr acquires similar knowledge. When Terr becomes aware of the planned extermination of the Oms, he decides to escape and warn the other Oms living in the wild. Though Terr is met with much resistance, he eventually informs the wild Oms with what he learned from living with the Traags. This
results in an all-out war between the Oms and the Traags.

Every element of Fantastic Planet succeeds at making the film a science fiction classic. The story of co-existence and acceptance of new ideas is quite standard for this type of affair, but here it is used to great effect especially given the fact that it was based on a novel from the 1950’s. Director Rene Laloux brings out the eerie and surreal of an otherworldly tale by focusing on small moments of brilliance as well as the weird moments that make science fiction so great. The moving illustrations of Roland Topor are artistic and creepy which is only enhanced by the method of cut-out animation. The creatures, landscapes and structures are like something straight out of Heavy Metal magazine. The sight of Traag spirits inside bubbles as they bring headless statues to life is an awe-inspiring scene. Alain Goraguer’s interesting choice of psychedelic music sets the tone perfectly for a strange world.

As you may have guessed by the names of the crew, Fantastic Planet is a French production. It came over to America with an English dub produced by, of all people, Roger Corman (Death Race 2000). The film won the special jury prize from the Cannes and was well received by many critics. There was never a sequel or a remake (thankfully), but director Rene Laloux went on to direct two more animated features, Time Masters and Gandahar.

It is very hard to explain just what makes Fantastic Planet so great outside of saying that it is unbelievably beautiful and very bizarre. The alien technology, the creepy critters, the detailed figures and the darkly odd tone all make for an animated film that cannot be done true justice through words alone. If you are even mildly interested in science fiction or animation, you owe it to yourself to seek out this French gem.

Why you need to see this: One of the best pieces of animated science fiction ever conceived.

Why you need to see this (insulting): Forget that Avatar shit; THIS is how you make a science fiction film.

Shut your Claptrap because Borderlands 2 is coming out!

It shouldn't come as a surprise that Gearbox is making a sequel to Borderlands; however, that doesn't make it any less awesome. Hell, if they hadn't bought the rights to Duke Nukem Forever, the game would have probably already come out.

Borderlands 2 is currently scheduled for release "during Take-Two's fiscal year 2013 beginning on April 1, 2012." Hopefully that time comes sooner than later. I'm putting my money on the holiday season.

Episode 88: “And THIS…is NOT the katana…”

The Sacred Blacksmith has forged a wedge that’s split Method to Madness in twain! It has my blessing as a worthwhile show, though there is no budging The Business.
Fan service is the salt of storytelling; in anime and most other breeds of entertainment. A pinch here or there can give a show an enriched flavor. More than a dash, and it ruins the experience; rendering it vile, inedible, and even toxic.

This show uses just what the recipe demands, losing none of its charming zest. Kevin, however, is a supertaster with an unforgiving pallet.

Geek School: Dune (1984)

The original novel of Dune was written by Frank Herbert in 1965. It received numerous awards, sold millions of copies and generally regarded as one of the greatest science fiction novels of all-time. So it was only natural that a movie adaptation would follow in its popularity. However, the scope of the story made for a hectic production that was heavily prolonged with a jumbled end-result.

Dune takes place on the desert planet Arrakis, home to the spice melange. The spice is a prime element which can be used for space travel, extending life and ‘opening your mind’. One faction known as the House Atreides is given control of the planet by the interplanetary Guild, only to be slaughtered by the brutal House Harkonnen. The son of the Duke of Atreides, Paul Atreides, escapes the onslaught with his mother and is taken in by the natives of Arrakis known as the Fremen. Through his mother, Paul teaches the Fremen the special sonic-based weapon technique known as the Weirding Way. With the help of the surviving members of House Atreides and the taming of the gigantic Sandworms, Paul wages a war against the Harkonnens and the Guild to control Arrakis.

Conception for the film adaptation started as early as 1971. Several writers and directors were being considered until 1974 when Alejandro Jodorowsky stepped up to the plate. Alejandro recognized the scope of the story and felt the only way to portray it was as a 10 hour feature film. The proposed project would star Salvador Dali, Orson Welles, David Carradine and Mick Jagger. Pink Floyd would be composing the score and pre-production would be handled by a number of French illustrators including H.R. Giger (Alien). Sadly, the project fell through as there simply wasn’t enough money to accommodate for a 10 hour film, though I’ve also heard that the final script would’ve made the movie 14 hours long. After this failure, the rights were tossed around to various writers and directors including Ridley Scott (Blade Runner).

Eventually, the rights were settled with attaching director and writer David Lynch (The Elephant Man). This was a very odd choice considering Lynch had never read Dune and didn’t even like science fiction in general. As a result, Lynch’s version of Dune turned out to be a very mixed bag. The casting wasn’t half-bad. Kyle MacLachlan does a fine job acting as the strong-willed Paul Atreides. Music artist Sting plays the bloodthirsty Faed which, while he doesn’t get quite enough to do, plays a decent villain. The production in terms of sets, costumes and props were amazing. Everything from the hovering street lights to the gigantic spice-mining vehicles look incredible with their elaborate designs. Special effects are a definite mixed bag. Sometimes the effects with the miniatures are fantastic with scenes involving the Sandworms. Other times they are just plain bad as when the mammoth sized spaceships arrive on Arrakis. The soundtrack by Toto is perfect. I will never tire of listening to the epic chorus of ‘The Big Battle’.

The film version of Dune was met with heavy distaste from critics, fans of the book and even David Lynch himself. When approached for piecing together a director’s cut from the extra footage, Lynch declined and the extended cut was labeled with the faux director name, Alan Smithee. Despite all this, I still like Dune for what it nails perfectly: the atmosphere. Dune is not a swashbuckling tale of intergalactic adventure; it is a dark, moody tale of corruption and revenge. That atmosphere is nailed perfectly in the film. This is hard science fiction and while this attempt at adapting that story to screen isn’t a great film, it is admirable in its attempt.

This would not be the last time Dune would be adapted into other media. The Sci-Fi Channel attempted a four-hour mini-series adaptation which, while closer to the source material, was certainly on a lighter budget in comparison to other productions at the network. It was popular enough to warrant a sequel, Children of Dune, which follows the two books after Dune. Though it is only slightly better than the first mini-series, this may be the only film adaptation of the books Dune Messiah and Children of Dune we’ll ever see.

Rumors have been floating around that a big-budget remake of Dune is in the works. To those filmmakers I say good luck. As for the 1984 film, I view it the same way I see the Watchmen adaptation. It is a story that simply can’t be filmed accurately in its entirety, but the film comes fairly close to being the film I envisioned. It is dark, violent, bloody, creepy and truly feels like an other-worldly science fiction tale. It’s just not the exact story from the novel which I am fine with, but it would’ve been something to see that 10 hour version.

Why you need to see this: Hard science fiction with a dark tone based on one of the best books ever written.

Why you need to see this (insulting): Let’s face it, you’ll never read this dense book so just watch the movie and pretend you’ve read it.

Where can you see it: Universal has released Dune on special editions for both DVD and Blu-Ray. Both formats include the original David Lynch theatrical version and the extended cut. I would advise against the extended cut as it contains a lengthy prologue and several scenes of expository narration.

What to watch for: Desert warriors riding mammoth-sized Sandworms into a battle of lasers and super-sonic weapons!

Site News: Some Jerk Off Stole My Laundry!

During the recording of last nights Whiskey Thursday, some asshole stole my clothes from laundry room. I didn't notice until I was getting ready for work and my work uniform was missing. I'm also missing most of my socks and at least one shirt. The bastard also left his nasty underwear in my dryer.

So when I go home I decided to write him a letter and post it on the bulletin board above the mail boxes.
