For its instruction on shutting down the knee of the bottom-side half guard player alone, this video is excellent. Another great nugget is Caio Terra’s use of leverage to get his opponent to turn over and take the back, rather than trying to force the arm across. Enjoy!

This accomplished BJJ player is renowned for his guard and his triangle choke from guard (and almost everywhere else). He also has a very smart approach to brazilian jiu jitsu, and that comes through in his very clear teaching style. This excellent video covers a jiu jitsu sweep from guard we covered in another recent post, but with a slightly different detail, and with a signature Ryan Hall triangle thrown in.

This jiu jitsu sweep from guard is known as the “sit-up” or “bump” sweep. The premise is super simple, but timing and set up are crucial. Notice how when the narrator begins his jiu jitsu sweep from guard, his opponent’s weight first comes down, then he follows him as he sits back up. Very high level jiu jitsu players use this to sweep opponents from guard to mount, even though the method is simple; that’s often how these things go!

With the legs closed around your hips, your opponent has a lot of control over your balance, and has numerous guard attacks you’ll have to watch out for. Breaking the “clinch,” or thai clinch, is vital, as this is a place many fights can and will end up if either fighter has stand-up skills. Boxers end up in this type of clinch often, as you can see in the Tyson vs. Holyfield “Bite Fight”. No biting here… this video is all about breaking the thai clinch without getting hit by knees, etc which can be damning to your chances, should the clinch arise.

Tyson vs. Holyfield “Bite Fight” (Complete Fight Video)

Mike Tyson bites Evander Holyfield’s ear in this video from the original “Bite Fight” on June 28, 1997, after Tyson did a stint in jail. Tyson complained that Holyfield had been headbutting, not only in this match (9:44, another view at 13:27), but in their original meet. After the fight, Tyson tried to continue to attack Holyfield, and lashed out against the crowd after an audience member threw a bottle of water in his direction. Mike Tyson’s fighting license was revoked as a result of this night of the “Bite Fight.”
