Cleaning out the attic, the closets, that spare room, and the garage is not only purifying but will help to decrease your taxes.

Taxpayers can either be small-time investors working in various sectors or big investors like businessmen who have a big source of income. The aim of both of them is to minimize tax payments. Tax planning entails investing in the right schemes at the right time.

You are a successful investor if you know what are the objectives of your tax planning, and you further go ahead realizing your objectives by carefully planning in the right schemes. Some of the common and most practical investment schemes include:

A.	Not Very Famous Category of Investment among Investors.

1.	Tax-saving mutual funds.

2.	Bank Investment schemes.

These investment schemes are at extreme ends of the risk-return spectrum.

B.	Very famous category of investment among investors.

1.	Infrastructure bonds.

2.	Private Investment schemes.

These investment schemes fall under the purview of fixed income instruments, and bypass the unnecessary tax burden.

Classification of Tax Paying Categories

Age is considered as the standard criteria for classification by the investment community. It is generally felt that low age yields maximum risk factors owing to less experience, whereas high age yields less risk, because one is more experienced.

Tip! State and Local Taxes: Depending on where you live, you will face a variety of state and local tax requirements. All but nine states (Alaska, Wyoming, Nevada, Florida, Tennessee, South Dakota, New Hampshire, Texas, and Washington) have state personal-income taxes.

Following are the broad categories of listing taxpayers according to their age:

A.	25-35 years of age - If you fall within this age group, then you are young, and may or may not be married, be with or without kids. If you are the only breadwinner of the family then getting insured is the most feasible option that you should think of. This is because if anything happens to you, your family will be in a comfortable position to sustain their living in your absence. A tax-saving mutual fund (ELSS) fits well into your risk profile and you can avail investing option of up to $10,000 limit. You can also invest in property on a home loan and get a tax benefit on the same under Section 199.

B.	35-45 years of age - At this age, tax-saving funds, having $ 10,000 limit (for claiming tax benefits), are a very practical option. This is the age where you plan for your future.

Tip! Make sure you pay in enough taxes to avoid penalties. Uncle Sam charges interest and penalties if you don't pay in at least 90% of your current year taxes or 100% of last year's tax liability.

C.	Over 45 years of age - At this age you are within the age of retirement, so your entire focus should be on pension policy. In addition, your investments need to be more retirement-oriented.

How To Legally Avoid Taxes. New Product. Great niche market.

Thus, with this piece of information at your disposal, you can surely earn rich benefits by saving your income to the maximum.

Eunice Wallace writes for niched content sites like these: Articulos Gratis and Spanish Articles and Natural Health.

Read more about Federal Loans

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://federal-taxes.blogspot.com/2007/04/federal-taxes-minimizing-on-taxes.html' title='Federal Taxes - Minimizing on Taxes: Practical Investment SchemesTip! Employ family members.

Health Savings Accounts and Taxes

Tip! Employ family members. Paying a salary to members of your family is one way to reduce taxes.

HSAs have a "triple" tax advantage from a federal tax standpoint. Individuals receive full tax advantages for HSAs on their Federal Income Tax return (or through a salary reduction program in certain employer-sponsored settings) regardless of particular state's tax treatment of HSAs.

An account beneficiary may take an above-the-line deduction (i.e. the amounts may be used to determine the individual's adjusted gross income before any itemized or standard deductions are considered) for contributions made to an HSA during any month of the individual's taxable year that the individual is eligible. The permitted deduction cannot exceed the sum of the "monthly limitations" for such months. In 2006, the monthly limitation for any month is 1/12th of the following amounts:

Tip! Generally, the four types of taxes include service fees and charges; franchise tax or surcharges; sales use or special taxes; and federal excise tax.

- For those with single coverage on the first day of the month, the lesser of the annual deductible under the HDHP or $2,700.

- For those with family coverage on the first day of the month, the lesser of the annual deductible under the HDHP or $5,450.

Funds in an HSA grow on a tax-deferred basis, and distributions from an HSA are tax-free so long as the funds are used for qualified (as defined by Section 213d of the IRC) health care expenses.

How does state tax treatment of HSAs differ from federal tax treatment?

HSAs (and the enabling legislation) are federal. As a federal program, each state decides whether to: a) comply with the federal guidelines, or; b) establish their own state guidelines regarding the tax treatment of HSAs. As a result, some income that may be tax-free at the federal level may not be tax-free at the state level.

Many states harmonize their tax treatment with the federal government. Those states include Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Iowa, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Montana, Nebraska, New Mexico, Oklahoma, North Carolina, North Dakota, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Oregon, Rhode Island, Virginia, Utah and Vermont.

Tip! State and Local Taxes: Depending on where you live, you will face a variety of state and local tax requirements. All but nine states (Alaska, Wyoming, Nevada, Florida, Tennessee, South Dakota, New Hampshire, Texas, and Washington) have state personal-income taxes.

Other states, however, treat HSAs differently from the federal government, at least for tax purposes. The following states have indicated that legislation must be passed at the state level before HSAs receive a tax benefit at the state level: California, Illinois, Maine, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, Ohio, Washington DC, Wisconsin, West Virginia and Tennessee. New Hampshire and Tennessee do not tax income, but do tax dividends and interest. Alabama has not indicated their position regarding state-level tax benefits for HSAs. Finally, some states are not affected by federal income tax guidance vis--vis HSAs: those states include Alaska, Florida, Nevada, South Dakota, Texas, Washington and Wyoming.

Tip! Without putting too much pressure on yourself, make dates or appointments to work on your taxes. Paying a salary to members of your family is one way to reduce taxes.

Debt settlement has become a popular approach to resolving problem debts without having to file bankruptcy. With this approach, creditors agree to accept a portion of what you owe (usually around 50% or less) to settle the account, and the remaining balance is forgiven. This technique will certainly continue to grow in popularity now that the new bankruptcy law makes it tougher to fully discharge debts in a Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

As with anything, there is no free lunch, and creditors are required to report canceled debts to the IRS on Form 1099 (when the canceled balance is $600 or greater). Therefore, the possibility exists that you may owe taxes on the forgiven portion of the debt. For this reason, many financial writers and debt counselors are strongly critical of debt settlement, to the point where they actually recommend against it just because you might end up owing taxes. But the tax consequences of settling your debts are greatly over-emphasized, and this is a really just a minor issue at best.

Tip! Without putting too much pressure on yourself, make dates or appointments to work on your taxes. A day for compiling information.

First, even if you end up owing taxes on the canceled balances, that's because you saved a bunch of money off your original debts. The total of what you paid the creditor, plus the taxes, will still be much less than what you owed to begin with. There is still a net savings. So it's hard to understand why this is viewed as a problem in the first place!

Second, the great majority of people who settle their debts are not required to pay taxes on the forgiven part of the balance. That's because of the "insolvency" rule, described in IRS Publication 908, "Bankruptcy Tax Guide." Don't let the title fool you. You don't need to have filed a formal declaration of bankruptcy to take advantage of the insolvency rule.

Tip! Participate in company retirement plans. Every dollar you contribute will reduce your taxable income and thus your income taxes.

Basically, "insolvent" means that you have a negative net worth -- that is, you "owe" more than you "own." As a consequence, most debtors do not have a tax liability on the canceled debts, simply because most debtors are insolvent! It usually comes down to home equity. If you have enough equity in a home (or other property) to outweigh the total of your liabilities (debts), then you have a positive net worth, and will likely have to pay taxes on the forgiven debt amounts. However, the majority of people in serious debt trouble have a negative net worth, and are therefore insolvent. The way it works is that you can offset the canceled debt up to the amount by which you were insolvent at the time you did the settlement.

Tip! Invest in your children's names. Your kids can each earn up to $700 in investment income without paying any taxes if they are over fourteen.

Come tax time, be sure to get professional tax advice specific to your situation. Also, be sure to read the section in IRS Publication 908 on "reduction of tax attributes," which requires people using the insolvency rule to reduce their basis in such things as rental property, loss carryovers, etc. Most of that probably won't apply to you, but again, get specific advice before winging it.

So, the message is, relax about paying taxes on canceled debt balances. That should be the least of your concerns if you're upside down financially. Don't let the misguided criticisms of financial writers (who haven't done their homework) discourage you from looking into one of the most popular and flexible options for achieving debt-freedom.

Charles J. Phelan has been helping consumers become debt-free without bankruptcy since 1997. width: 100px; padding: 5px; margin: 5px; background-color: #F0f0f0;'>Tip! Without putting too much pressure on yourself, make dates or appointments to work on your taxes. A day for compiling information.

We all agree that the credit card is very convenient. That is why the IRS allows you pay your taxes through it. To sweeten the deal, credit card companies offer rewards in the form of frequent flyer miles. So you can get a free air ticket too. But hang on, is that convenient to your pocket too? Sadly, the answer is no.

Disadvantages

The IRS has authorized third party companies to process your credit card payments. However, you, the taxpayer has to pay for it. So, every time you use your credit card to pay tax, you also have to pay a fee that is usually around 2.49 % of your tax. Thus if you are paying $18,000 in taxes, you also pay an additional fee of around $450. Now add the fee charged by travel rewards credit cards and you can drop the second letter from the word free' as in free airline ticket.

Tip! Donate your old clothes and furniture to your favorite charity. Cleaning out the attic, the closets, that spare room, and the garage is not only purifying but will help to decrease your taxes.

If you are in debt, the last thing you want is more debt. Annual interest charges are quite high, even going up to 30%. You could spend the rest of your life paying for the $18450 convenience.' If you are in debt with many credit cards, this additional debt can lead to bankruptcy. But even that cannot save you. As per law, you still have to pay taxes along with other payments like child support or alimony.

Tip! Employ family members. Paying a salary to members of your family is one way to reduce taxes.

It is for these reasons that consumer agencies like the Association of Independent Consumer Credit Counseling Agencies (AICCA) suggest alternative ways of paying income tax. You could dip into your savings bank account or take a loan at a lower interest rate.

How To Reduce Your Property Taxes! The complete property tax reduction resource center.

There are only two conditions under which this transaction looks good. You pay the IRS with your credit card and simultaneously pay off the credit card company as well. This way, you avoid the interest payments, if it is any consolation. The other condition is that if it is impossible for you to meet the IRS deadline. While the IRS can grab most of your assets immediately, your credit card company cannot. While the case is in court, you may just win a lottery or inherit a windfall!

Zack Nelson recommends Find Credit Cards to apply for an American Express card.

http://www.findcreditcards.org

Read more about Federal Loans

Federal Taxes - Tax Man - Government Technology

Tax Man
Government Technology, CA - 2 hours ago
"If we can move taxpayers to paying electronically for both their state and federal taxes, that is cheaper for us to process -- about 60 percent cheaper." ...

See more about Taxes ...

'Tax Freedom' Day Arrives Two Days Later in '07
WebCPA, NY - 15 hours ago
In 2007, Americans will work 79 days to afford their federal taxes and 41 more days to afford state and local taxes. Cleaning out the attic, the closets, that spare room, and the garage is not only purifying but will help to decrease your taxes.

If you own your own business or have not been deducting enough from your paychecks each week, you will probably owe some income taxes when tax time rolls around. This is never fun, and if you do not have the money in your checking account right now, you might be tempted to pay the taxes with your credit card. A word of advice: don't.

When you owe income tax to the federal government or the state government, they are aware that the amount you owe may be over the amount you have access to at the moment. They prepare for this eventuality by allowing tax payers to file for an extension to pay their debt. You can arrange for a payment plan to be in effect for the total amount.

Tip! Employ family members. Paying a salary to members of your family is one way to reduce taxes.

You will of course pay interest on the amount that you are putting off, but the interest rate that the government charges is relatively low. With state governments this number will vary, so check with your local state tax office. But for the federal government, the current rate of interest on unpaid taxes is seven percent, which is the federal short-term rate plus three percent.

Now consider your credit card. Most credit cards carry an interest rate of anywhere from twelve to twenty-one percent. If you owe taxes that you can't pay, you probably have a higher interest rate credit card. This means that whatever you pay in a lump sum to the government, you will be financing with your credit card company at the interest rate you pay for your regular purchases. If this is fifteen to twenty percent, you will end up paying much more for your taxes.

Tip! Do file your taxes before April 15. Extensions give IRS more time to review your return since it is not filed during the season rush.

In the end, it pays to work within the government's system of extensions and take their lower interest rate on the amount of your tax you cannot pay yet. If the payment play that they offer you is still too steep for you to pay each month, then call the hotline number provided on the offer and request another plan be arranged. You may need to show proof of your income to do this, but it will be worth it so you don't default on the unpaid taxes.

Rebecca Spitzer recommends Find Credit Cards for comparing 0 APR credit cards.

Read more Finance information

Federal Taxes - The IRS Owes You Money If You Have

The IRS Owes You Money If You Have Paid Long Distance Phone Taxes

Tip! State and Local Taxes: Depending on where you live, you will face a variety of state and local tax requirements. All but nine states (Alaska, Wyoming, Nevada, Florida, Tennessee, South Dakota, New Hampshire, Texas, and Washington) have state personal-income taxes.

The IRS has decided to give up the fight on an ongoing legal issue regarding taxes it has collected on long distance telephone services. Here is the scoop.

The IRS Owes You Money If You Have Paid Long Distance Phone Taxes

Tip! Some categories of users are exempt from some taxes.

Every one of us pays for some form of long distance telephone service. The more you use the service, the more you start hunting for better rates. Whatever choice you make, however, you are always stuck paying a federal tax on the bill. For those of you with large long distance phone bills, this tax can add up quickly given the fact it is calculated at three percent of your total bill.

The tax in question is known as the federal excise tax on long distance telephone service. It was created in 1898. Yes, this tax arose well over one hundred years ago. As you might image, a few people started to wonder how a tax established in 1898 could possibly apply today, particularly given the advancement of telephone technologies. Turns out it doesn't apply! Given a chance to review the situation, five appellate courts have ruled the tax invalid.

Tip! Decide what you are up to doing. Can you go out and work with a company (like an H&R Block) to help complete your taxes.

After contemplating the situation, the IRS has decided not to challenge the legal rulings. Instead, it has voluntarily agreed to issue credits or refunds for the excise taxes paid the past three years. Specifically, you will be able to claim a refund of all taxes paid from February 28, 2003 till the date the IRS stopped collecting them.

To collect the refunds, the IRS will create a new box on all 1040 filing forms for the 2006 tax year. In practical terms, this means you will be able to check a box and get a refund when you prepare your 2006 tax return in 2007. The IRS will pay interest on these funds.

Tip! Invest in your children's names. Your kids can each earn up to $700 in investment income without paying any taxes if they are over fourteen.

It should be noted the refund is applicable only to the long distance excise tax. You still must pay local service taxes and the refund does not apply to taxes collected by states and such. Still, any refund is a good refund in my opinion.

How To Legally Avoid Taxes. New Product. Generally, the

Single and Multi Owner LLC Taxes

Tip! Generally, the four types of taxes include service fees and charges; franchise tax or surcharges; sales use or special taxes; and federal excise tax.

LLC owners must report their business income and losses on their personal income tax returns

Similar to a sole proprietorship or partnership you must report your income to the IRS. An LLC is not a separate tax entity like a corporation. The IRS considers Limited Liability Company a pass through entity." Earnings are taxed only once. Profits and losses of the LLC pass through' the business to the LLC owners. Owners (members) must then report this information on their personal tax returns. The good news is the LLC itself does not pay federal income taxes. But some states do charge LLCs an annual state tax.

Tip! Employ family members. Paying a salary to members of your family is one way to reduce taxes.

Income taxes and the number of members in your LLC

The number of members in your limited liability company determines how it is taxed by the IRS.

Single-Owner Limited Liability Company Taxes:

If you are the sole owner of your LLC then the IRS taxes you much the same as it would a sole proprietorship. All profits and losses must be reported on your 1040 tax return (on the Schedule C attachment). You can not avoid taxes by leaving your money in the LLC's bank account. All profits in the LLC's accounts must be reported.

Multi-owner Limited Liability Company Taxes:

If there is more than one member of your LLC the IRS taxes you much the same as it would a partnership. Again the LLC itself does not pay tax on profits. Individual members must report their share of profits on Schedule E and attach it to their 1040 form. Each member pays taxes on their distributive share of company profits, as stated in the LLC operating agreement. Again, the LLC itself is not taxed by the IRS although there may be an annual state tax, depending on which state you are in.

Tip! Make sure you pay in enough taxes to avoid penalties. Uncle Sam charges interest and penalties if you don't pay in at least 90% of your current year taxes or 100% of last year's tax liability.

State Taxation of Limited Liability Companies:

Although the IRS does not tax LLCs, California levies an annual minimun franchise tax of $800.00, they expect this payment within three months of forming your LLC and kindly send you a bill so you don't forget. Wyoming levies an annual State tax on of $100.00; California requires an annual List of Officers or Members filing, fee of $100.00; Delaware levies an annual franchise tax of $30.00.

Dennis Gardener is an assistant editor at small-business-assistance.

More small business information YOU CAN USE, available at small-business-assistance

Read more about Federal Loans

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://federal-taxes.blogspot.com/2007/03/federal-taxes-single-and-multi-owner.html' title='Federal Taxes - Single and Multi Owner LLC TaxesTip! Great niche market.

Ever wondered why so many small businessesmore than 3,000,000 at last countoperate as an S corporation? Simple. An S corporation saves business owners big taxes in three separate ways:

First, as compared to regular corporations (sometimes called C corporations), S corporation owners can use the business's losses incurred during the early lean years on the owner's personal returns as deductions. For example, suppose a new S corporation suffers a $20,000 loss its first year and that the corporation is equally owned by two shareholder-employees, Smith and Jones. Smith and Jones each get a $10,000 business deduction on their individual tax returns because of the S corporation loss. This $10,000 deduction might save them each as much as $4,000 in federal and state income taxes.

A second, big S corporation benefit: As compared to almost every other business form, S corporations can save their owners self-employment or Social Security/Medicare taxes. Suppose, for example, that Adams, Brown and Cole independently each own businesses that make $90,000 a year in profits. Each business owner may pay $13,000 in income taxes. But, unfortunately, that's not the only tax they pay. Each owner also pays self-employment or Social Security/Medicare taxes.

Tip! Make sure you pay in enough taxes to avoid penalties. Uncle Sam charges interest and penalties if you don't pay in at least 90% of your current year taxes or 100% of last year's tax liability.

For example, Adams operates his business as an LLC and therefore pays 15.3%, or roughly $13,500, in self-employment taxes on his profits.

Brown operates his business as a C corporation which pays all of its profits to him as a salary. Accordingly, Brown (through his corporation) also pays 15.3%, or roughly $13,500, in Social Security and Medicare taxes.

Cole's situation is different. Cole operates his business as an S corporation which means that Cole can split his $90,000 of profits into two payment amounts: salary and S corporation distributions. Suppose that Cole says only $40,000 of his profits are salary and takes the other $50,000 as a "dividend" distrbution. In this case, Carter pays the 15.3% Social Security/Medicare tax only on the $40,000 in salary. Carter therefore pays roughly $6,000 in Social Security/Medicare taxesand annually saves $7,000 in taxes as compared to Adams or Brown.

Tip! Invest in your children's names. Your kids can each earn up to $700 in investment income without paying any taxes if they are over fourteen.

S corporations also, sometimes, provide a third form of tax savings because S corporations don't pay corporate income taxes. This means that S corporations avoid the often-talked about "double-taxation" problem. However, the "no corporate income taxes" benefit often isn't a savings for small corporations and their owners.

But let me explain. Suppose that two corporations each earn the same pretax profit of $100,000 and are owned by Ms. DaVinci who pays the highest federal income tax rate of 35%. One corporation is an S corporation and the other is a C corporation. The S corporation can distribute the entire $100,000 in profits to DaVinci as dividends because there is no corporate income tax. DaVinci then pays $35,000 in personal income taxes on the S corporation profits, which means she nets $65,000 in after-tax profits from the S corporation. In comparison, the C corporation can't pay the entire $100,000 in profits to DaVinci. The C corporation first pays $22,250 in corporate income taxes. When the C corporation pays the remaining $77,750 to DaVinci as a dividend, DaVinci pays another $11,663 in 15% "dividend" taxes on the C corporation profits. This means that DaVinci nets roughly $66,000 in after-tax profits from the C corporation profits. In this case, DaVinci saves money with a C corporation in spite of having to pay the corporate income tax.

Tip! Decide what you are up to doing. Can you go out and work with a company (like an H&R Block) to help complete your taxes.

How to Get S Corporation Benefits

To create an S corporation and receive S corporation tax savings, you need to do two things: First, you must incorporate the business either as a regular corporation or as a limited liability company. Second, you need to make an election with the IRS to have the corporation or LLC treated as an S corporation. The S election is made with form 2553, available from the www.irs.gov web site. Note that some states (such as New York) require a separate state S election.

Tip! Some categories of users are exempt from some taxes.

A final tip: S corporations can save you thousands of dollars annually, but your tax savings can't start until you elect S corporation status. If you're interested is electing S status to save on taxes for next year, you may want to call your tax advisor or attorney right now!

Redmond WA CPA Stephen L. The mortgage interest and real estate taxes are deductible, and may allow you to itemize other deductions such as property taxes and charitable donations.

I have collected information here to assist you with the overall requirements by the IRS so that you can plan your business a little better. However, as we all know there will be ammendments to these points raised below from time to time and you would be best to confirm anything you read on this page with the relevant department. You can simply do this by the internet at http://www.irs.gov/ when you think you need to.

The first pointy I would like to raise is the type of business you are in - this will determine what taxes you must pay and how you pay them. Here are the four basic types of business taxes.

- Income Tax

- Self-Employment Tax

- Employment Taxes

- Excise Tax

Let's run through them -

1. Your Income Tax

Just about all businesses apart from partnerships must file an annual income tax return. You should note here that partnerships file an information return. The form you use to do this depends on how your business is organized.

Tip! State and Local Taxes: Depending on where you live, you will face a variety of state and local tax requirements. All but nine states (Alaska, Wyoming, Nevada, Florida, Tennessee, South Dakota, New Hampshire, Texas, and Washington) have state personal-income taxes.

The federal income tax is a pay-as-you-go tax. You must pay the tax as you earn your money or when you receive income throughout the year. In most cases, an employee usually has income tax withheld from his or her pay. Note - If you do not pay your tax through withholding, or do not pay enough tax, you may have to pay an estimated tax. If you are not required to make estimated tax payments, you will need to pay any tax that falls due when you file your return. For additional information refer to Publication 583, Starting a Business and Keeping Records at the IRS.

Tip! Employ family members. Paying a salary to members of your family is one way to reduce taxes.

Tax For Those Who Are Self Employed

Self-employment tax often called SE tax, is a social security and Medicare tax primarily for individuals who are self employed. Payments of SE tax contribute to your coverage under the social security system. It is important to know that Social security provides retirement benefits, disability benefits, survivor benefits, and hospital insurance (Medicare) benefits.

You must pay SE tax and file Schedule SE (Form 1040) if either of the following applies.

1. Your net earnings from self-employment were $400 or more.

Tip! Without putting too much pressure on yourself, make dates or appointments to work on your taxes. A day for compiling information.

2. You had church employee income of $108.28 or more.

Your Employment Taxes

In relation to employees, you as the employer have a number of employment tax duties that you must pay and forms you must file. These include the following:

1. Social security and Medicare taxes

2. Federal income tax withholding

3. Federal unemployment (FUTA) tax

You can gain additional information at Employment Taxes for Small Businesses

Excise Tax

You will have excise taxes levied on you if your business does the following:

1. Manufacture or sell certain products.

2. Operate certain kinds of businesses.

3. Use various kinds of equipment, facilities, or products.

4. Receive payment for certain services.

Excise taxes can relate to activities, such as on wagering or on highway usage by trucks. Excise Tax has several general excise tax programs. One of the major components of the excise program is motor fuel. For more details, refer to Excise Taxes at the IRS.

Tip! Donate your old clothes and furniture to your favorite charity. Cleaning out the attic, the closets, that spare room, and the garage is not only purifying but will help to decrease your taxes.

This article has been supplied courtesy of Bill Darken. With two small children at home, a mortgage to pay, and enough other expenses hanging over our heads, this option seemed somewhat crazy. Fortunately, a severance package and unemployment helped to ease my transition to freelance work and I managed to have some additional work lined up to get me started.

One of the first things I did was to set up my business as an LLC: a limited liability corporation. I used the services of LegalZoom to organize my company, saving myself some money over the services of a tax attorney. The advantages of running an LLC include: legal protection from suitors in the event I am sued for work that I have done. They can go after my business assets, but not my personal assets. In addition, the whole way of paying myself has changed: I don't receive a paycheck, but I do make disbursements. These disbursements are not subject to social security taxes, but they are taxed on the federal and state level. Still, with tons of deductions every year [I pay our family's medical bills for starters], our disbursements are fairly low. Livable, but low. Plus, I take advantage of IRA contributions for my wife and me. We are a one income family, something we decided to do even before children arrived on the scene.

Tip! Without putting too much pressure on yourself, make dates or appointments to work on your taxes. A day for compiling information.

The disadvantages of an LLC are few. Start up costs are more and you have to register with the state to keep everything in order. Still, the little extra legwork is worth it and marketing myself as an LLC has been useful especially when I tell employers that I have officially set up myself as a business. Employers seem to appreciate that I made a little extra effort to formally organize myself. In addition, some are happy not to have to furnish 1099 forms for work that I do for them.

Is an LLC right for you? That depends on what you want from one. Contact a tax accountant to gain more information. After nearly four years of business, I have grown to appreciate what an LLC offers and my customers seem to recognize that advantage as well.

Tip! Generally, the four types of taxes include service fees and charges; franchise tax or surcharges; sales use or special taxes; and federal excise tax.

Copyright 2006 - For additional information regarding Matt Keegan, The Article Writer, please visit his blog for wit, quips, and freelance writing tips.

Read more Finance information

Federal Taxes - D.C. All American citizens who fall under this category have to pay this. Taxable income is calculated by removing (a) excluded income, (b) exemptions, and (c) permissible deductions from the individual's gross income.

The following are the heads under which you can avail the tax deduction:

1. Exemptions: Some common exclusion from gross incomes is:
I) Earnings made from life insurance contracts
ii) Earnings made from gifts and inheritances
iii) Proceeds granted for personal injuries
iv) Interest received from state and municipal bonds

certain conditions have to be kept in mind before availing these deductions.

2. Deductions: In addition to the standard deduction, some common "above-the-line" deductions include:
i) Trade/ Business expenses
ii) Alimony
iii) IRA contributions
iv) Net capital losses
v) Expenses incurred due to property used for income generation

income tax laws are not everybody's cup of tea and so should be handled with care.

3. The Standard Deduction: When individuals have minimal "below-the-line" deductions, they are directly granted a standard deduction. The standard deduction under different heads in 2004 was as follows:
i) Single $4,850
ii) Head of household $7,150
iii) Married filing a joint return $9,700
iv) Qualifying widow(er) with dependent child $9,500
v) Married filing a separate return $4,850

More from Federal Income Tax Deduction

Tags: Federal Income Tax, Tax Deductions, Taxes, Tax

Don't Just Worry About Federal Estate Taxes

Tip! Taxes are deducted in the same manner as federal taxes, each pay period and filed with the applicable state on a monthly basis. Most states will also require a quarterly information report comparable to the 941 federal forms.

Many states have their own estate tax laws that you need to worry about. With the current law phasing out the estate tax over the next few years, the state's are beginning to feel the pinch of having less federal estate-tax revenue coming in.

Several states, especially those with budget issues, are levying some forms of estate and inheritance tax on their own.

Twenty-four states and Washington, D.C. now have an estate or inheritance tax. Some of these laws are new, some are not.

Although the current federal law exempts the first $2 million of an estate's worth, the threshold in some states is much lower. With a home, a retirement account and other investments, many estates easily become taxed by the state.

For example, in New Jersey, estates worth over $675,000 are subject to some form of state inheritance or estate tax.

The threshold is $1 million in D.C., Kansas, Main, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Nebraska, New York, Oklahoma and Oregon.

The maximum rate varies, but is usually around 16%. Federally, you can recieve a deduction on your federal estate-tax liability based on the amount of estate tax paid to the state.

Don't just assume that since the federal estate tax is phasing out for a few years that you are out of the way. Estate taxes vary from state to state.

This leaves many people needing to think over where they choose to retire. Many states are starting to feel the pain of this as well, with several repealing their estate-tax laws to discourage high-income residents from leaving.
