The second season of True Blood started off right where season one left off. In True Blood, Season 2, Episode 1:  Nothing But the Blood, Bill Compton has kept the making of Jessica Hamby into a vampire from Sookie Stackhouse and she finds out. The biggest turn of events is what has happened to Lafayette. This episode also houses one of bloodiest horror-ridden segments in the show’s history. It was creative that it was essentially kept it in shadows and blacked out, keeping its gruesome contents off screen for the next episode.

In True Blood: Season 2, Episode 2: Keep This Party Going, the viewer finds out why it is not advised that vampires go home after they have been turned.  Jessica goes home, much to Soki and Bill’s chagrin.The viewer also find out why she was partially happy when she was told in Season 1 that she could never go home again. It was interesting though, seeing the good parts of her family that Jessica was forced to leave behind along with the bad. Lafayette uses the metal replacement hip of a recently dismembered prisoner to escape from his Fangtasia prison and gets shot in the leg for his trouble. He offers to become a vampire and is feed upon instead by three vampires at once.

True Blood: Season 2, Episode 3: Scratches was my second favorite episode of Season 2 after the Nothing But the Blood so far. A bull-headed creature attacks Soki, leaving her back scarred and poisoned. As Soki lays half-naked and Bill holds her down, a doctor digs samples out of her bleeding back. I do not know if it is a good thing or a bad thing that a superior horror scene such as this is housed in a Showtime television series. Its too bad we do not see such creativity on screen in the majority of American horror movies, where they settle for a naked girl running around or having sex instead of making said nakedness integral to the plot. I should have guessed something was up with the pretty new waitress Daphne, especially since she showed up around the same time as Rear Admiral Cain’s,  I mean Maryanne’s, appearance. I wonder if Daphne is the bull-headed creature or is working for it since she bears its mark. I thought it might be Maryanne but she seems more like a God-type creature instead. We’ll have to wait and see.

Bar Refaeli is currently appearing in a naked black and white video. Technically she is not naked as she always finds a way to cover herself up. I do not know what Bar Refaeli  is promoting or selling but I can see fans of her past work, ahem, appreciating this video. Check out the video below. I took a gander at the first episode of Thomas Jane’s new HBO series Hung and much like the first episode of the now deceased Rome; it was not as good as I had hoped. Its purpose was to lay the groundwork for the show’s premise and futures episodes. The pilot episode of Hung accomplishes that goal. I did find the first episodes of  Gossip Girl, Madmen, and Ugly Betty, amongst others, to be vastly superior though. Jane’s well-endowed, hapless hero, Ray Drecker, reminds me of Tommy Gavin from Rescue Me, except he does not have the same witty dialogue. I hope during the next few episodes, Hung improves.

The [REC] 2 Teaser Trailer picks up right where [REC] left off. “Just hours after the first film, the Barcelona Police Department sends a SWAT team to commence a sweep of the building. What they are unprepared for is the amount of bloodthirsty infected that descends upon them as they find clues as to the nature of the virus.” I recently watched and reviewed [REC] and must say I was impressed that they were able to sustain the suspense and tension as long as they did. I am looking forward to seeing the story continued. Check out the trailer below and leave your thoughts on it. [REC] 2 will be released on October 10, 2009.

With an approach to the war in Iraq like the latter half of Home of the Brave, Taking Chance emphasizes the effect of the war on the people in the home front. Taking Chance is the story of one soldier that decided to go off to war and another that decided to stay home and serve in a different capacity. When Taking Chance begins, Private First Class Chance Phelps has died and Lieutenant Colonel Michael Strobh (Kevin Bacon) notices his name and where lives on a list of the recently decreased while at home early one morning. When Lt. Col. Strobh requests to take PFC Chance home for burial, leaving the normalcy of his cubicle, Strobh’s odyssey and the real substance of Taking Chance begins.

While transporting Chance’s body and effects, Strobh encounters a diverse group of people, individuals that respond to his uniform and his assignment in different and some unexpected, ways. Some show his uniform and he respect instantly, some grow to respect him when they learn of his reason for traveling or at the very least look at him differently. The war and most tragic consequence of armed conflict, death, become all too real to some people. The fact that there is in fact a war going on, though it is not reported on as much as past conflicts, is plopped into unfamiliar and naïve laps, delivering a reverberating reality check. The safety and simple lives they enjoy comes at a price and when they see Chance’s packaged body, they are made aware that others are paying it for them.

Amongst the plethora of instructions Strobh is given at the initiation of his voluntary assignment, the most important is that Strobh to stand at attention and salute Chance’s packaged body when it is brought back into its presence or departs from it to be stowed for travel. This is shown with reverence and care as arms are slowly raised to forehead before being slowly returned to the side of the leg.

Taking Chance is not just the story of the transported but of the transporter as well. As what happened to Chance and the type of person and soldier he was comes to light from fellow soldiers, friends and family, the viewer also finds out the same about Strobh. Furthermore, from his displayed character, we realize that Strobh is not exactly suited or completely comfortable with his current duty assignment. During the third act of Taking Chance, the viewer finds out why Strobh is not in Iraq and his guilt over his decision. Strobh is a fit, able soldier and it’s evident during the second act that his decision is gnawing at him.

Ross Katz’s Taking Chance is war film about the people fighting the war, not about the war itself. Do not be beguiled though, this is not a film about post-traumatic stress disorder. Taking Chance is the story of one soldier’s journey of self-realization after another soldier’s journey has come to an end.
