In this episode, David Chen speaks with writer Mark Boal and legendary director Kathryn Bigelow about the process of creating their exciting new film, The Hurt Locker.

From the film’s production notes: “The Hurt Locker is a riveting suspenseful portrait of the courage under fire of the military’s unrecognized heroes: the technicians of a bomb squad who volunteer to challenge the odds and save lives in one of the world’s most dangerous places.” I’ve seen the film and think it works well as both an action film and a war film. Certainly for any /Film readers out there, it’s definitely worthy of your attention. The movie is out in theaters today in NY/LA and will expand wider in the weeks to come.

During this episode, we learned what it feels like to beat up James Van Der Beek, why he changed his name from Clifton Gonzales Gonzales, what it’s like to lose a bunch of weight in an extremely short period of time to prepare for a boxing role, what the mood was on the set of Star Trek, and also, who can play dead better: Clifton Collins Jr. or Samuel L. Jackson?

Clifton Collins Jr. can be seen in virtually everything under the sun this summer, including Sunshine Cleaning, Crank: High Voltage, and as Captain Nero’s right-hand man in Star Trek. He’s also in too many other upcoming films to list here, including The Boondock Saints 2. Clifton was recently in Nashville because of his creative collaboration with Zac Brown Band on their Platinum song “Chicken Fried,” which has earned them a double Country Music Television nomination (and a win for USA Weekend Breakthrough Video of the Year!). Clifton shot “Chicken Fried” on his days off from Mike Judge’s upcoming film Extract, which comes out in September.

The /Filmcast Interview: Rian Johnson - The Brothers Bloom (IFFBoston)

Rian Johnson first burst onto the indie film scene in 2005 with a small film named Brick, which won a Special Jury Prize at Sundance for Originality of Vision. His new film, The Brothers Bloom, stars Adrien Bloom and Mark Ruffalo as two con men trying to pull one last job: to swindle a reclusive heiress played by Rachel Weisz.

My full review of the film will be available on May 15, 2009, but in the meantime, I can tell you that I’ve seen the Brothers Bloom and was completely blown away. Rian Johnson has crafted what I would call a con film with a heart. With a budget several times that of Brick, he has expanded his visual style considerably, delivering a cinematic confection that combines the mood and playfulness of a Wes Anderson with the technical proficiency of a P.T. Anderson.

Through and through, this film has everything you could possibly ask for: A great score by rian’s brother, Nathan, a huge cast full of colorful, quirky characters, an unexpected knockout performance by Rinko Kikuchi, and a script that will keep you guessing till the very end. With “The Brothers Bloom,” Rian Johnson has shown that he has the capacity to transcend the complex moodiness of Brick and deliver a full-blown crowd-pleaser. I have little doubt that by the end of 2009, “The Brothers Bloom” will be one of my favorite films of the year.

I recently had the opportunity to speak with Rian Johnson during Independent Film Festival Boston, where his film screened on opening night to an audience of a thousand people. The following interview took place during the screening, right before his Q&A. I should say that Rian is probably one of the nicest, most down-to-earth directors I’ve ever interviewed, a man who I don’t think truly grasps the insane amounts of talent he’s possessed of. We spoke about his burgeoning career, and what it was like to go from Brick to The Brothers Bloom.

The /Filmcast Interview: Ben Steinbauer - Winnebago Man (IFFBoston)

About two decades ago, Jack Rebney filmed a Winnebago commercial that would change the world of viral video forever. In the punishing heat of an Iowa summer, Rebney’s two-week Winnebago shoot made him extremely irritable, which consequently made his video crew miserable. In fact, they got so incensed with Rebney’s oppressive treatment that they made a blooper reel of the shoot which was then unleashed upon the world. The video shows middle-aged Rebney screaming profanities and other nonsensical statements. It is, in a word, remarkable. In the years before internet video, this reel was passed around from person to person using VHS tapes, but since the advent of Youtube, the clip has been seen by over 1 million people online.

Director Ben Steinbauer’s hilarious and powerful new documentary, Winnebago Man, asks the universal question that many of us have probably wondered about: What happens to people like Aleksey Vayner and Ghyslain Raza after they became viral video sensations? Steinbauer was fascinated with Rebney’s video and became determined to track him down to find out how the video had changed his life, if at all. Along the way, he interviews people involved with the actual Winnebago shoot depicted in the video to find out exactly what happened that fateful summer that resulted in the creation of the blooper reel (the dissemination of the reel resulted in Rebney being fired). He also talks with people who have enjoyed Rebney’s video; if you’ve seen the video yourself, you know that there’s something cathartic, even therapeutic, about watching an old man completely lose his shit. In watching the film, I got the sense that there’s also something a little bit profound about sharing that experience with millions of other anonymous viewers out there in the world.

Steinbauer eventually locates Rebney and meets with him a few times to chat with him about the extent of his internet fame. It’s hard to explain exactly what makes Steinbauer’s film entertaining and moving without giving away spoiler-y details about these meetings, but suffice it to say, Rebney, as a personality, does not disappoint. What emerges from the film is a nuanced, funny, touching profile of a cantankerous old man, who just happens to have entertained millions with some random swearing a couple decades ago.

Steinbauer has put together an insightful documentary that does what any great documentary does: While illuminating the life and circumstances of another person, it also makes us examine ourselves a little bit more closely. In making this film, Steinbauer has gotten to the core of what makes videos like Jack Rebeney’s funny, but he also unexepctedly speaks to that part in each of us that derives fulfillment from knowing that we’ve entertained and touched the lives of others. In the end, it seems, there might be a little bit of Jack Rebney’s spirit in all of us.

I had the opportunity to speak with Ben Steinbauer after his film screened at Independent Film Festival Boston. We talked about why, out of all topics, he decided to make a film about Rebney, and what he had to go through to get it completed:

The /Filmcast Interview: Ondi Timoner - We Live in Public (IFFBoston)

According to Ondi Timoner’s We Live in Public, Josh Harris is “the greatest internet pioneer you’ve never heard of.” Timoner’s documentary paints Harris as a man keenly attuned to the rapid advancements of the internet age, always one or two steps ahead of both the conventional wisdom as well as the prevailing technologies of his day. Harris made millions when he started internet data-analysis firm Jupiter Communications, then parlayed that money into other ventures, such as the short-lived internet TV studio Psuedo. Psuedo was launched before Hulu, revision3, justin.tv or uStream; hell, this was even before broadband was as widespread as it is today, making streaming, high-quality television a reality (Psuedo’s programs were a bit choppy).

After Pseudo, Harris launched perhaps his most ambitious project of all: an experimental community/art project called “Quiet: We Live in Public.” Harris rounded up over 100 artists into an underground bunker, offering free food, drink, and firing range access (with a huge of assault weapons to choose from, no joke). Using an intricate system of cameras, he recorded their every move and provided each of them a TV monitor so they could watch the activities of others. When FEMA shut down the bunker, Harris launched a different, more intimate version of “We Live in Public,” installing dozens of cameras and microphones inside his apartment to record the actions of himself and his girlfriend, Tonya. He then broadcast the results onto the internet, to the pleasure of many an internet chat room participant. As the second iteration of “We Live in Public” progressed, Harris found that constant internet surveillance had the ability to drastically affect his psychological condition and, perhaps, the course of his life.

I saw We Live in Public last night at IFFBoston and came away greatly impressed. Timoner is a masterful storyteller, whose ability to choose and edit footage to create a coherent plot cannot be understated. What I loved most about the film was how it dives into the insidious effects our internet culture can have on the human psyche. People who listen to any ol’ podcast on the internet understand this: Knowing that you’re being broadcast can bring you into a state of “hyper-realism.” The film seems to ask, “What would you do in front of a camera that you wouldn’t do otherwise, and why?” Timoner and a film crew spent 30 days in Harris’s underground bunker, and her coverage of it plays out like a bizarre fever dream. The fact that this community even existed at all is remarkable, where people pissed, shit, fucked, showered, and practiced their use of automatic weapons, all under the watchful gaze of cameras. As the atmosphere in the bunker become more tense and unstable, Timoner makes it all seem simultaneously exciting and terrifying, but an unforgettable experience either way. Thus, We Live in Public partially serves as a fascinating Lord-of-the-flies-esque document of humanity unleashed.

But it was when Harris turned the camera on himself and his girlfriend that I really began to see the issue with a whole new level of granularity. Simple quarrels became climactic duels, and mundane activities became charged with the thrill of exhibitionism. Slowly, you see the their relationship painfully buckle under the weight of the camera. The results are heartbreaking but also carry implications disturbing for us viewers, as much of our lives increasingly take place online.

I had the privilege to speak with Ondi Timoner about her film this past Saturday. We spoke about the filmmaking process, the implications of life in a Web 2.0 world, and her upcoming projects. Last night I saw Tze Chun’s film, Children of Invention, at IFFBoston. Children of Invention follows the plight of an Asian American family in Boston, grappling with poverty. As the single mother of two children, Elaine Cheng (Cindy Cheung) is forced to resort to some desperate measures in order to provide for Raymond (Michael Chen) and Tina (Crystal Chiu). When Elaine, who’s ever-searching for a way to be financially independent, becomes embroiled in a pyramid scheme that spirals beyond her control, her children are left to fend for themselves.

Children of Invention was chosen to screen at Sundance 2009 won Special Jury awards at the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival and the Sarasota Film Festival. You can actually purchase Children of Invention on DVD right now at the movie’s website, www.childrenofinvention.com.

I had the opportunity to speak with Mr. Chun last night after the screening. We talked about the plight of indie films today, the necessity of different distribution models, and the role/position of Asians in American cinema.

In their very first attempt at a movie commentary, Dave, Devindra, and Adam, discuss the hidden layers of meaning behind Step Up 2: The Streets. Special guest Jen Yamato joins us from Rottentomatoes to add her unique perspective and love for the film. If you have the DVD of Step Up 2, or if you have access to Netflix Watch Instantly, just listen to the audio file for instructions on how to sync it with your copy of the film [This was primarily a tech test to see if it’d actually be possible for us to even do a commentary over Skype.
