A play between the sounds of a stairwell, beatboxing and tango.

About the Artist…

Phil Poppy has created a number of art films edited through Filmdependence.

‘Unidentified Individual’ and ‘The Stairs’ dealt with themes of isolation and the role of the camera within the city.

Both pieces captivate the audience through quiet contemplation; eventhough we are spying on the subjects through a CCTV camera, the music and passive observation bring out feelings towards the subjects and their environments.

In ‘Red Carpet’ the extremes of the need to record every moment with such rigour and urgency is given the Phil Poppy treatment. Expressions from fans, smiles from stars, the seriousness, desperation and graciousness of the whole ordeal is slowed down and ordered to a point in which a passing moment is now charged with exploration.

Throughout Phil Poppy’s earlier pieces a close relationship between sound/music and the landscape has been used to bring out sensibilities towards each subject. Lately this use of sound has become more complex. ‘Quartet’, as screened last year at Kings Place and Richmix, combined four rotating video and audio tracks into a surround sound installation. Each character’s singing and atmospheric sound created an interplay that can be experienced differently from each corner of the auditorium.

An intimate fly-on-the-wall documentary portrait of teenage girls breaking the stereotypes set for them by intensely conservative Afghan society, in some cases escaping grinding poverty, …

An intimate fly-on-the-wall documentary portrait of teenage girls breaking the stereotypes set for them by intensely conservative Afghan society, in some cases escaping grinding poverty, gaining self-esteem and confidence as players in Afghanistan’s first ever women’s national football team.

The film follows the team during preparations for their first competitive international matches, concentrating on a number of the players and their journey from growing up under the Taliban, to their life in modern-day Afghanistan and their hopes for the future.

As a child, Roya had to collect waste paper off the filthy, dusty streets of Kabul’s slums in order to find fuel for her family. Found by an Afghan charity helping street children, she received an education and found she had a talent for football. She now plays centre-forward for the national women’s team, but also works teaching and training other children who are still forced to work on the streets to help their families.

Other members of the team recount their problems with the Taliban and how football helped them to see a future in present-day Afghanistan, beset by insecurity and suicide bombings.

The film offers a rare and intimate insight into the lives of young Afghan women, showing them as people individuals striving for a future and not just passive victims.

Produced, filmed and directed by Bahareh Hosseini
Edited by Marta Velasquez
Music by Afghan Music Project.

11 young women drew up a business plan for a social enterprise: a preschool to serve a poor neighborhood in the town of Mpika where children didn’t have access to early education.

Going to preschool gives children a foundation to go on to the next grade,

says 18-year-old Esnart, the group’s marketing and creative director.

This way, they won’t be roaming around, getting into trouble. They’ll be able to make something of their lives.
