Freud Deluxe Edition (07/12/2009)

Freud comes to CD for the very first time!

Varese Club releases Jerry Goldsmith's score to Freud. Freud gave Goldsmith the opportunity to psychologically probe the human mind. He merged his own musical style with the Vienna school of Berg, Webern and Schoenberg to produce an agitated and thoroughly captivating work. Without question one of the most important scores of Jerry Goldsmith’s career, there were even cues from this score which found their way (much to Goldsmith’s chagrin) into Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien.

Freud follows the career of the famous doctor (Montgomery Clift) as he leaves his work in Vienna to study hypnotherapy in Paris with Professor Charcot (Fernand Ledoux). After marrying (Susan Kohner) he goes to work with Dr. Joseph Breur (Larry Parks) to treat a young woman (Susannah York) and a young man (David McCallum) whose neuroses form the basis of Freud’s major theories and lead him to focus on analysis in place of hypnosis.

Jerry Goldsmith received his very first Oscar nomination for his score for John Huston’s 1962 film Freud. Now expanded from its original LP release, Freud comes to CD for the very first time!
Available in 3000 copies from December 14th.
Innerspace, The Fugitive, Panic in Year Zero (01/12/2009)

Three new releases from La-La Land Records

INNERSPACE
Jerry Goldsmith

Presenting the world premiere score-only release of renowned composer Jerry Goldsmith’s (THE OMEN, PATTON, BASIC INSTINCT, GREMLINS) original score to the beloved 1987 Warner Bros. sci-fi/action-adventure/comedy INNERSPACE, starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short, Meg Ryan and directed by Joe Dante. Goldsmith’s classic mix of synth and orchestra finds the perfect pitch of suspense, adventure and romance to propel Dante’s wonderfully off-beat genre mash-up. Produced by MV Gerhard and Mike Matessino, and remastered by Mike Matessino from WB vault elements (LCR taken off the 2' 24-track analog reels mixed to stereo and approved by Bruce Botnick), this definitive release of INNERSPACE features more than 50 minutes of previously unreleased music, and includes exclusive, in-depth liner notes by Dan Goldwasser and Jeff Bond (with new interview comments from Joe Dante and others). THE FUGITIVE
James Newton Howard

Presenting the 2-CD expanded archival edition of composer James Newton Howard’s (DAVE, FLATLINERS, THE SIXTH SENSE, KING KONG ’05) Oscar-nominated score to the 1993 Warner Bros. blockbuster THE FUGITIVE, starring Harrison Ford, Tommy Lee Jones and Julianne Moore and directed by Andrew Davis. James Newton Howard’s powerhouse orchestral score anchors all of the film’s action, drama and suspense, while never losing sight of the lead characters’ underlying humanity. It’s a modern-day classic action score that still retains its vitality. Produced by MV Gerhard and Dan Goldwasser and remastered by James Nelson from WB vault elements, this deluxe 2-Disc release features over an hour of previously unreleased music and finally corrects a major error on the original 1993 soundtrack release, (the right and left channels were mistakenly reversed). Bonus tracks include cuts from the original soundtrack release and alternate cues. Exclusive, in-depth liner notes by Dan Goldwasser and Jeff Bond feature new comments from director Andy Davis and more. This is a limited edition of 3000 Units.
Baxter’s amazing jazz-infused roller-coaster of a score whisks the listener on a wild ride through the film’s trippy landscape, as a typical early 60’s-era family on vacation finds themselves fighting for survival after Los Angeles is destroyed by a nuclear attack. Simply put -- a great score to a cult classic. Produced by Ford A.
Oscars 2010: Marc Shaiman (26/11/2009)

Shaiman named music director
for the ceremony

Tony winner Marc Shaiman is headed down Oscar's red carpet once again. The stage and film composer is returning as music director of the 82nd annual Academy Awards ceremony, which will be held March 7 at the Kodak Theatre in Hollywood.

Shaiman, who won a Tony for his work on Broadway's 'Hairspray' and has received five Oscar nominations, is a veteran of the Academy Awards ceremony, having written comic medleys for shows in years past. He also served as musical director for the 2004 ceremony.

Speaking from New York, Shaiman said he's already started working on potential musical numbers for the show. 'We've had just a few meetings, and some ideas have started to be put into place,' he said.

'The show is a huge ship that takes off every year. It's never too early to start work, but it's not until the nominations are announced that we can really begin.'

The Oscar nominations are set to be announced Feb. 2.

Shaiman said he was happy to be re-teaming with his 'Hairspray' collaborator Adam Shankman, who is producing the telecast along with Bill Mechanic. Shaiman added that his job entails all aspects of music during the show, except for conducting the live orchestra.

The composer revealed some tidbits about his current and upcoming stage and screen projects. His musical adaptation of the film 'Catch Me if You Can' is currently looking for a home on Broadway, after out-of-town tryouts in Seattle earlier this year.

'We're circling theaters like Broadway vultures,' he said. 'You have to actively hope for a show to fail. It's a terrible thing to think.'

He also discussed his in-the-works Showtime project with director Steven Spielberg -- a scripted series about the world of Broadway musicals: 'We've just begun, but the ideas are flowing. And it seems to be on the fast track.'

In addition, Shaiman is working on a new musical version of 'Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,' for which he is writing the score along with Scott Wittman.

As for the Oscars, Shaiman refused to say whether hosts Alec Baldwin and Steve Martin would be performing a musical number together.

'Who knows?' he said. 'I can tell you there will be surprises, but of course I can't tell you what they will be.'

Back to the Future (24/11/2009)

One of the most requested titles now released by Intrada!

The 1985 Robert Zemeckis hit Back to the Future truly needs no introduction. Produced by Steven Spielberg, the film is an all around flawless production about a teenager (Michael J. Fox) inadvertently driven back in time 30 years and forced to help his parents meet in order to preserve his own future. The result is one of the most entertaining sci-fi adventures ever produced. One of the many elements that helped Back to the Future achieve this special status is the adventurous, exciting score by Alan Silvestri. And while the score was an integral part of the film's overall experience, it was relegated to only two tracks -- a mere sampling -- on the original soundtrack album released at the time of the film. The MCA Records release mainly focused on the vocals from the film, including the Huey Lewis and the News hits 'Power of Love' and 'Back in Time.' But a few minutes of score was not quite enough to satisfy, and for years collectors of film music and fans of the movie pined for a complete score release. Now, almost 25 years later (and closing in on the same amount of time that Marty McFly traveled back in time to meet his teenage parents), Intrada presents the complete Alan Silvestri score to Back to the Future on this special 2-CD set.

The complete score as used in the final picture is included on the first CD and comprises material recorded mostly during the period from June 5th through 11th, 1985, including two original source cues heard briefly in the film and presented here in their entirety. The second CD offers a previously unheard listen into earlier May sessions and plays as a dynamic listening experience on its own, relying less on the main theme, but offering moments that are darker and more dramatic than the final film eventually required. A final, original source cue not used in the finished film can be heard for the first time, wrapping up the second disc. For this release, Intrada had access to all the original multi-track elements housed at Universal Studios, delivering a crisp and vibrant sound for this premiere release of one of the most requested unreleased scores.

While this is a limited edition release, we don't want anyone to miss out on this important album. For that reason, we have agreement that we can exceed the usual 3000 limit and do not need to indicate a specific amount on the packaging -- so there are more than enough to go around.

UPDATE: The first 3000 are sold already at Intrada.
Milan Records Re-Relasing Soundtracks (21/11/2009)

Over 100 classic soundtracks that
have not been available for years

Milan Records has been exploring its vault of cutout soundtracks, some of which have not been available in the U.S. for over fifteen years and is systematically releasing them through their domestic distributor, ADA.

The label is re-releasing over 100 soundtracks including The Dead Zone, Wes Craven’s New Nightmare, Killing Zoe, The Phantom, Child’s Play and more including releases from legendary composers Hans Zimmer, Mark Isham, Basil Poledouris, Michael Kamen, Stewart Copeland, Howard Shore, J. Peter Robinson, Randy Edelman and more. Milan is also speaking with various repertoire owners to release unreleased soundtracks in the U.S. and will release the never-before-released soundtrack to Chan-wook Park’s infamous film, Oldboy on January 19, 2010.

In addition, Milan Records is working with its International office in Paris, France to release foreign film soundtracks that have never been available in the U.S. including music from Angelo Badalamenti, Bruno Coulais, Maurice Jarre, Javier Navarrete, Stanley Myers, Alexandre Desplat, Joe Hisaishi and more. These films and their music were never commercially released in the U.S. Milan expects to release nearly 100 additional foreign film soundtracks in the U.S.

“We are excited to make these soundtracks available again. The digital medium gives us the opportunity to re-release over 100 soundtracks that we love but that we can’t justify keeping active in physical CD form,” explains SVP of Milan Records, Nick Bobetsky. There are fans out there that want this music and after many years, they can finally get it again.”

Over the past three years Milan has also released over 300 other digital-only titles from its cutout catalog including jazz, tango, Cuban and other world music as well as classical and chant titles from its sister label, Jade Music. Milan expects to release over 200 additional titles from its International office in the next 6 months including jazz from The Hot Club in Paris, classic French music and more.

Milan has also been utilizing the digital medium to strategically release digital singles and EPs from its artist roster in order to keep a constant flow of new content from its developing acts.

“We have opportunities today that we did not use to have,” explains Milan COO Jean-Christophe Chamboredon. “Milan is fortunate to have such a large catalog that has been developed over the past 30 years and are eager to make it available in its entirety.”

Film Music Site will be updating the information on which soundtracks will be released in the upcoming months.

Interview Guy Cuyvers (19/11/2009)

Belgian composer writes music for Laura's Stern 2

Guy Cuyvers (°Antwerp, 1960) is considered one of the most versatile musical talents of his country. As a classical guitar player he has been acclaimed by Angel Romero and the international press unanimously praises his film scores. In 1995, his career as a film composer knew a successful start with the American production Sea Fever. This first film score led to a commission to write the music for the international co-production Into the Rising Sun, broadcast worldwide. In 2009, Guy wrote the main part of the score for Lauras Stern 2, a German-Chinese 3D animation movie. He succeeded Hans Zimmer, who wrote the main part for the first movie.

We talked to this talented Belgian composer. So check out our latest edition of composer talk.

Avatar Music Details Unveiled (17/11/2009)

Atlantic Records announces release of
Avatar: Music from The Motion Picture

On December 18, James Cameron unleashes 'Avatar' on the world. The 3-D sci-fi epic has been an in-the-making project for more than a decade, with Cameron's first script treatment written in 1994. He's been out of the director's chair -- for features anyway -- since 'Titanic,' released in 1997, so the release of 'Avatar' is a fairly enormous happening within the culture of mass media entertainment.

Today, Atlantic Records issued the first details about the score. There are 13 tracks from composer James Horner comprising the pure score. The final track, titled 'I See You (Theme From 'Avatar'),' features vocals from Grammy-nominated singer Leona Lewis. The score drops on December 15, three days shy of the movie.
Avatar with James Horner

At the moment, Lisbeth Scott is one of the most asked for vocalists in Hollywood. She's worked with composers such as John Debney, Hans Zimmer, Harry Gregson-Williams, John Williams and most recently, with James Horner. Furthermore, she has worked on films like Toys, Narnia 1 + 2, Shrek, Munich, The Passion of the Christ and many others. Recently, she's been working on one of the most anticipated films of 2009, James Cameron's Avatar. Besides working on film music she will also be releasing another album as a solo artist. Her latest CD, Hope is a Thing, will be available on iTunes on November 10th. A portion of the proceeds from Scott’s album and concerts will go directly to the non-profit organization “Education Through Music Los Angeles.”

She took some time out of her busy schedule to talk to us. We spoke about her working relationship with composers John Debney, John Williams and James Horner, with whom she's working on Avatar.
Danny Elfman Gets Replaced (10/11/2009)

Paul Haslinger Replacing
Danny Elfman on The Wolfman

Today Cinemusic, which follows everything regarding film soundtracks and scores, nabbed a disappointing scoop that composer Danny Elfman (Batman, Spider-Man, Milk) will no longer be composing the score for Joe Johnston's The Wolfman, and he will be replaced by Paul Haslinger (Death Race, Prom Night, Crank). While Cinemusic cites scheduling conflicts and even a rumor of problems with the film, our own inside source told us that not only has Elfman composed a finished score already, but that he's done at least a few different versions and that the studio doesn't like his score and wants to use another one instead.

Word on the street is Elfman composed 'a traditional, grandly gothic effort a la Kilar’s Bram Stoker's Dracula,' but apparently it wasn't good enough. So as not to create an insecurity as to the quality of the film, however, there seems to be a certain amount of damage control in this 'scheduling conflict' story because it sounds like with Haslinger's recruitment, almost none of the work Elfman has done will end up on screen. This is especially upsetting since Joe Johnston holds Elfman in such high esteem:

“If Danny Elfman does do [Wolfman], I’m going to basically just let him run loose. I’m going to run the movie for him without music and without the temp track and say, 'Do what you have never done before and see what comes out of it.' I think he’s fantastic.'

This is simply a sad turn of events for a film that has been plagued by numerous release delays and other production problems. I really hope that at some point we'll hear Elfman's score even if it's just in the form of an internet leak, but who knows if that'll ever happen. If we hear anything further regarding this change-up we'll be sure to let you know, but for now, it's Haslinger's score we'll be hearing in February.

Assassin's Creed II Soundtrack (04/11/2009)

Available November 16th

Award-winning composer Jesper Kyd has created an epic soundtrack for Assassin's Creed II, the sequel to the fastest-selling new IP in video game history. Following his atmospheric score for the original Assassin's Creed, Kyd takes the music in an adventurous new direction and crafts an immensely diverse, melodic and progressive musical pallete featuring acoustic and symphonic orchestrations with emotional depth and diversity. The original score was recorded with A-List musicians and a Hollywood orchestra and choir at the world-renowned Capitol Studios. The Assassin's Creed II Original Soundtrack will be available for digital download from popular music stores on November 16th.

Assassin's Creed II features a new hero, Ezio Auditore da Firenze, a young Italian noble, and a new era, the Renaissance. The game tells an epic story of family, vengeance and conspiracy set in the pristine, yet brutal, backdrop of a Renaissance Italy. Ezio befriends Leonardo da Vinci, takes on Florence's most powerful families and ventures throughout the canals of Venice where he learns to become a master assassin. The music propels the action, captures the allure and mystery of the story and immerses players in the breathtakingly detailed settings.

Patrice Desilets, Creative Director at Ubisoft: 'Jesper Kyd's score for Assassin's Creed II brings players into the Italian Renaissance by providing a true sense of depth for the poignant moments, while also giving a jolt of adrenaline to the action-packed sequences. We are thrilled to have Jesper Kyd back with us in making Assassin's Creed II an epic title on all levels.'

Jesper Kyd: 'We created a unique musical identity for Assassin's Creed II that reflects the character and story of Ezio and elevated the music, both in terms of creativity and live production, to a whole new level.'

Assassin's Creed II is the product of over two years of intensive development by the original creative team behind the Assassin's Creed brand. Assassin's Creed II is scheduled to launch on November 17th, 2009 for the PLAYSTATION® 3 computer entertainment system, the Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft and the PC.
The Princess and the Frog (03/11/2009)

Randy Newman's score to be
released on November 23rd

Walt Disney Records will release the soundtrack for The Princess and the Frog, available digitally and in stores on November 23, 2009. The Princess and the Frog marks the return to traditional hand-drawn 2D animation from the revered team of John Musker and Ron Clements, with music by Oscar-winning composer Randy
Newman.

The Walt Disney Pictures film takes place in New Orleans, whose sounds
of jazz, Zydeco, blues and Gospel present the perfect musical setting for the film. Multi-platinum, 3-time Grammy Award-winning Def Jam recording artist Ne-Yo contributes 'Never Knew I Needed,' the featured end credit song of the film. The soundtrack features performances by Dr. John, the film`s Anika Noni Rose, Jim Cummings, Keith David, Michael Leon-Wooley, and Jenifer Lewis, with performances on trumpet by Terence Blanchard.

Ne-Yo made headlines one year ago when his most recent RIAA platinum album Year Of The Gentleman debuted at the top of the Soundscan and UK national charts. The album went on to generate a league-leading total of five Grammy Award nominations - with its #1 R&B smash single 'Miss Independent' winning in the Best R&B Song (songwriters award) and Best Male R&B Vocal Performance categories. Year Of The Gentleman followed up Because Of You (released May 2007), which won the Grammy Award for Best Contemporary R&B Album, and In My Own Words (February 2006) - both of which debuted at #1 on the Billboard 200 and R&B/Hip-Hop Albums charts.

Academy Award Winner Randy Newman is one of America`s greatest
singer-songwriters and film composers. He began writing songs as a teenager and became known for his caustic wit and wry turn-of-phrase. This sense of humor and ironic sense of timing has proved the perfect match for film. Beginning with 1995`s Toy Story, Newman`s work for Walt Disney has helped to create such beloved films as Monsters, Inc, Toy Story 2 and 3, Cars, and A Bug`s Life. Nominated an impressive 17 times, Newman won an Oscar in 2002 for 'If I Didn`t Have You' from Monsters, Inc.

Walt Disney Animation Studios presents the musical The Princess and the Frog, an animated comedy set in the great city of New Orleans. From the creators of The Little Mermaid and Aladdin comes a modern twist on a classic tale, featuring a beautiful girl named Tiana (Anika Noni Rose), a frog prince who desperately wants to be human again, and a fateful kiss that leads them both on a hilarious adventure through the mystical bayous of Louisiana.
Psycho Theme, Scariest of All Time (31/10/2009)

Survey conducted by
PRS for Music (UK)

Composed by Bernard Hermann, the tune reaches a crescendo as Norman Bates stabs Marion (played by Janet Leigh) to death, leaving her blood to pour down the plughole. It beat Jerry Goldsmith's eerie Ave Satani song, which featured in The Omen, to claim first place.

Hans Zimmer's 'Samara's Song' in The Ring was third and Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom Of The Opera theme was fourth. Mike Oldfield's Tubular Bells from The Exorcist was fifth.

Ellis Rich, chairman of PRS for Music which carried out the survey, said: 'During this period many of us turn to horror films on a quest for the thrill of goosebumps. 'What makes the difference between an average horror and a classic is clearly the film score, without which the movie would just not have the same effect.'

PRS for Music collects royalties on behalf of composers songwriters. The company polled its members to get the results.

Barry DeVorzon
2000 copies

La-La Land Records presents music to 'thrill you!' It's the premiere release of renowned composer Barry DeVorzon's (THE WARRIORS, LOOKER, XANADU, theme from TV's SWAT) delightfully creepy score to the 1986 cult shocker NIGHT OF THE CREEPS, starring Tom Atkins, Jason Lively and Steve Marshall, written and directed by Fred Dekker (THE MONSTER SQUAD). DeVorzon fashions a dynamic ride of a score that buoys all of this classic film's laughs and screams. Bonus tracks feature alternate score cues, songs from the film -- including The Diamonds' 'The Stroll' and C-Spot Run's (aka Martha Davis of The Motels) 'Nightmares' -- and an all new audio interview with composer DeVorzon. 20 Page CD Booklet features in-depth liner notes with new comments from composer DeVorzon and writer/director Dekker.
Avatar's Score is big. Really Big. (20/10/2009)

Horner has been working over a year for 'Avatar'

There hasn't been a giant hype surrounding a movie since 2005's Star Wars: Episode III - Revenge of the Sith. At last it's here. Avatar, which is said to be the most expensive and revolutionary motion picture of all time slowly takes over the world. A smart media campaign and even a 24-minute long preview in theatres around the world: Avatar is going to be big. So is composer James Horner. For the people who wondered where he is and what he is doing: He's been composing music for James Cameron's cinematic pearl for over a year.

According to Mike Knobloch, the executive vice president of Fox Music, it's a 'Brilliantly unique blend of traditional and contemporary, electronic elements and it spans the entire spectrum of attitude and energy – from bombastic action to the delicate, romantic discovery of a new world. The score takes you to this other world.”

Director James Cameron and composer James Horner worked together before, and with great result. Action-score Aliens was a product of their collaboration, and of course there is a certain score called Titanic. Avatar has a running time for over three hours, and there will be almost as many music. Horner has all the elements he needs: there are over a hundred musicians in the orchestra. The stringsection excists out of 70 musicians. Just like in the Lord of the Rings trilogy, the language of a species in the movie itself will be used to enrich the score.

The score of Avatar doesn't have a releasedate.
