ART NOTE: QUIVER - LINDA LOH

Linda Loh's QUIVER exhibition emerges from her studio residency at invisible art space in May 2026 and is an iteration of previous works exploring the orb form. Loh notes: "The orbs are restless, quivering representations of luminous circular forms, existing and not existing, hovering in their own version of space. Extending the recurring themes of light, circles and blurred boundaries, the opportunity to access multiple screens enabled the integration of various versions, culminating in an abstraction of ideas informing the work: multiplicity, “all at once,” entanglement, parallel play, infinity, forever, symbols, ascension, “self” and more." It is Loh's first solo exhibition in Sydney and the first time all of her video and digital-based orbs have been shown at once.

Orbs can be seen in both analog and digital photography as transparent, circular phenomena appearing unexpectedly within the photograph. There is debate over what causes them — is it dirt or reflections of light on the camera's lens or flash, or something more paranormal [1][12].

Orbs have a philosophical history also — Plato's Symposium features orbs: Aristophanes’ speech mentions that original human beings were spherical in form, with four arms, four legs and two faces looking in opposite directions [3]. Zeus was jealous of their strength and cut them into two, and they've been trying to return to their original form as One since then, only succeeding through love [3][2]. The circular form of the orb has indicated Oneness in many cultures throughout history [4].

Loh’s orbs glow and pulsate light emitted from the darkness of the black screens. One screen is mounted at eye height on the wall, bathed in the light from a projector. Ten screens of various dimensions, from 12" to 52", are placed on the gallery floor, reminiscent of Richard Serra's Casting (1969) work, lifting the installation beyond a purely pictorial object [5]. Loh's screens are placed in both vertical and horizontal orientation on the floor adjacent to the wall and horizontally on the wall, which extends Serra's horizontal floor layout. Circular reflections fill the floor gaps between the display devices. The orbs are beautiful to look at, the colours are harmonious and they fit within what Peter Schjeldahl calls Baudelaire's definition of beauty as a "spark between something fleeting and something timeless" [6] in both concept and visual aspects. Loh's light-filled orbs quiver, as the exhibition title suggests. Circular patterns of colour, oscillating fields of light-based electromagnetic frequencies create space within the installation. This work is one of pure light, with the screens emitting light from the electronics within. It's a sharp contrast to traditional paintings where layers of paint cover the canvas, representing light within the frame.

Scientific research on light shows that like wind, light can push objects in its path [7], it creates movement. Loh's orbs are activated, the wisps of colour move slowly around the form, and pulsate like the activation of energy in the electrons themselves. We're seeing frequencies of light moving at its most basic level. Light has been studied throughout time, from Euclid of Alexandria in his c. 300 BC Optica record of observations [8], to Isaac Newton's 1704 book Opticks and Michael Faraday and James Clerk Maxwell's work on the electromagnetic spectrum in the 1800s through to Werner Heisenberg's self-titled Heisenberg Uncertainty Principle effectively noting that "existence at the quantum level seems to be metaphysical rather than material" [9]. Karen Barad notes that matter and meaning are entangled at the atomic level and cannot be separated [10]. We're seeing light as consciousness, at the quantum scale [11] imagined by Loh's orbs. These lights are both borderless in their reflections and contained within their screens.

This exhibition is an iteration of previous works exploring the “orb” form. Extending the recurring themes of light, circles and blurred boundaries, this opportunity to access multiple screens enables the integration of various versions, culminating in an abstraction of ideas informing the work: multiplicity, “all at once,” entanglement, parallel play, infinity, forever, symbols, ascension, “self” and more.

02-28 November ::: Emily Simek (Mel) and Shelley Watters (Syd) collaborative studio residency → composting as methodology

RELATED EVENTS

08-23 May ::: The Highlands Theatre Group play, Shirley Valentine, has begun its run, with a triumphant start to the season on Friday 8th. If you’re in town, definitely add this to must see list! Jack has been helping build the set, creating visuals and running the sound desk during the show.

May-June ::: The Pop-Up Project Members Exhibition at Centennial Vineyards features works spanning painting, drawing, sculpture, ceramics, woodworking and photography from artists based in the Southern Highlands. I’ve been enjoyed plotting/printing some of my specture drawings now that my plotter is setup. There are two editions of one of my ink plotter drawings in this exhibition. It’s a great time to visit the Highlands, with the colours of Autumn on show throughout the region. Video of installed works and more information

04-06 June ::: NFC Summit Lisbon, Teia exhibit is being held during day2, 05 June at the Non Fungible Conference (NFC) part of the Summit. NFC is described as “where the creative economy meets Web3 through art. NFC centers entirely on digital and blockchain-based artistic practices, with dedicated exhibitions, installations, and immersive experiences unfolding across the site.” I’m co-curating the Teia art community screen as part of Teia’s decentralised curation team. There are two parts: firstly, invited artists will create works and secondly, the community nominates suggested artists and the Teia DAO votes on who will be included.

Grassroots, community archive sites are back online:

::: Brisbane Dance Parties Archive → this site is one of my long-term research project and documents flyers, names and places in the early dance parties scene in Brisbane (1987-2001, though will be extended soon). There’s still work to do on the structure and additional memories to add, so the site will evolve over time. Enjoy the memories!

::: The Stealth Collection → this site catalogues the hip hop collection of Mark Pollard from Stealth Magazine and The Mothership Connection radio show. Many of the releases were promos, sent to Mark to be featured in his magazine and/or radio show. It’s a great snapshot of some of the Australian hip hop community from the past few decades

The Dark Room - May Day edition with ORGANARCHY and LUKESNARL

The Dark Room returns with another two carefully curated live electronic acts, featuring ORGANARCHY & LUKESNARL in an exclusive venue for a special May Day Edition.

ORGANARCHY has been active since 1996 as a collective of cut-and-paste technoids dedicated to crafting politically charged soundscapes at community parties & underground gatherings. Their rig is a mash up of analogue & digital hardware, the sound a live fusion of samples & machine grooves. Members of the band previously played in Non Bossy Posse as rebel rousing rave-olutionary techno anarchists in the early 90s. The recordings remain anticopyright freeware, designed for amplification at events that push for a better future.

Since the early 90s LUKESNARL has probably been better known as the FX part of the "Decks'n'FX" duo Sub Bass Snarl, using samplers, effects units, synths & other hardware to augment the group's sonic output, making it more of a sound system than deejay duo. The last decade has seen him delve into the esoteric world of modular synthesisers, wielding cables & flexing the extreme possibilities of the format to replace most of the equipment used in his previous Sub Bass Snarl outings. More recently he has been developing custom setups for performing solo electronic sets of original electronic music & tonight he performs in a rare live appearance.

There will be substantial rigs at this event with a lot of patch cables for nerds to ogle. Please stand back when taking photos. In support, DJs Minim & Action Ant will kick off at 6pm.

DJ MINIM has formerly played under the name DJ Ding for over three decades at events such as The Big Day Out, Natural Experience, Freaky Loops, the Liquid Labyrinth bush doofs & lots of epic rave parties back in the 90s. He has worked with Clan Analogue since 1992. Expect a set of downbeat techno with dance-inspiring shuffles.

ACTION ANT has been DJing, performing at & organising events since 1985, covering underground music from Electronic Dance through to 80s Synth & PostPunk. They will present a selection of electronic tunes including Japanese electro, dubtronica & DnB.

Previous events sold out quickly & well in advance, strictly limited capacity, book early!
LIMITED TIX!! $28 prebook

Doors from 5pm, DJs from 6pm, live acts from 8pm. Get there early to grab food locally & feel free to bring it to the venue with you. Great pizza next door & outdoor tables available.

invisible art space news - April 2026

After a long summer break, invisible art space is back with more great events and exhibitions planned for 2026. We hope you’re enjoying a relaxing long weekend and not stressing too much about the current state of the world.

:::

January - March 2026

In January and March, we had a couple of [In]Visible Synth Sessions improv music afternoons with ATMM, Spoid, Zita and her theremin plus special guests: Coco Varma, Stuart Ridley and Glenn O’Loughlin at our Southern Highlands Garden Party and Justin Tauber (Golden Fang, The Sins, Jo Meares Band) at the Balmain gallery space. So far these sets have been low-key/IYKYK, but keep an eye out for their public gigs soon…

:::

April 2026

Coming up this Saturday 11th April two films by Andrew Garton (Secession Films) are being screened: "Know Me" and "Forged From Fire".

Please join us from 1-3pm at invisible art space to view these special films -> 141/2-18 Buchanan St, Balmain

:::

Know Me is a poetic realism style film showing the interconnections between the forests of Sarawak and some of the Indigenous peoples living there, as well as the impacts of biomass loss over time. The film weaves 1955-1963 8mm footage filmed by British WW2 veteran and linguist, Ian Urquhart with Andrew Garton's DV8, HDV and HD footage filmed between 1999-2014, along with time-lapse animations by artist, Mirranda Burton. It's a unique glimpse at a special place and culture at risk of further loss.

https://secessionfilms.com/project/knowme
https://www.andrewgarton.com

:::

Forged From Fire - The Making of The Blacksmiths' Tree tells the story of the Australian and international community of blacksmiths, artists, welders and volunteers working together following the tragic and traumatic 2009 Black Saturday bush fires to create The Blacksmiths' Tree, a three tonne, 9.8 meter tall gum tree made from copper and stainless steel. The film shows that beauty can come from resilient and connected communities during the recovery period following an horrific event such as this. Forged From Fire was a Best Documentary Finalist at the Melbourne Documentary Film Festival in 2019.

https://www.forgedfromfirefilm.com

Saturday 11th April two films by Andrew Garton (Secession Films) are being screened: "Know Me" and "Forged From Fire"

Please join us from 1-3pm at invisible art space to view these special films -> 141/2-18 Buchanan St, Balmain

:::

"Know Me" is a poetic realism style film showing the interconnections between the forests of Sarawak and some of the Indigenous peoples living there, as well as the impacts of biomass loss over time.

"Forged From Fire - The Making of The Blacksmiths' Tree" tells the story of the Australian and international community of blacksmiths, artists, welders and volunteers working together following the tragic and traumatic 2009 Black Saturday bush fires to create The Blacksmiths' Tree, a three tonne, 9.8 meter tall gum tree made from copper and stainless steel. The film shows that beauty can come from resilient and connected communities during the recovery period following an horrific event such as this.

astrology interpretations prediction system - artwork collab with claude

testing a new artwork for upcoming exhibition -> vibecoding a prediction system to predict astrology interpretations (artistic licence). have been seeing many posts about prediction for finance and other systems, so wanted to explore the idea of prediction in culture -> astrology selected for this exploration

update:
the app now includes a daily horoscope as well as the general sun sign
the predictions are very machine-like / computational-speak. as if the machine thinks people are machines too. which I'm finding very interesting

I've been reading through "Seeing into the future - a short history of prediction" by Martin van Creveld. it's interesting to think about the various types of prediction used in culture throughout history. he mentions astrology is the only one (at least so far in the list he's discussed so far ie shamanism, oracles, prophesy, oneirology) that doesn't need to leave the 'ordinary world' & enter a new realm/world to create the analysis - they just look to the stars and create mathematical models (whether they're correct or not is an entirely different thing ;) )

https://astro-ml-app-qxui.vercel.app

---
initial prototype

so much fun

a few outputs (for same inputs). love the slight randomness

a collaboration with claude, my new dev team member and creative collaborator

exports to xml & json too. hoping to mint+print if we can get those working, or print to a receipt

:::

Concept / Hybrid Matter

Desire leaves traces.

Sometimes faint, sometimes heavy — but always forming.With time, these traces condense inside structures, changing their behavior, their surface, their meaning. Hybrid Matter explores how form emerges within a flow of simultaneously operating layers: displacement, return, pause, accumulation.

In this exhibition, the digital is not separate from the physical — it is simply one of the layers inside the same continuous flow. A hybrid object is born at the crossing point between intention and accident, between touch and code. It shifts direction during its own making, gathering traces instead of erasing them. Each bend, fold, fracture, or digital interference becomes part of its identity.

The works in GLB 2.0 reveal indirect imprints of desire across structures, surfaces, and behaviors. Objects transform into carriers — places where traces gather, disperse, and reconfigure. Meaning becomes mobile, not fixed, circulating through a system of interactions where the artist's intention collides with the material's response.

Hybrid Matter offers a framework to read this co-working of desire and form without reducing it to a single explanation.It is an ecology of becoming — a choreography of friction, accumulation, and transformation.

Cordyline fragments --> This is a lidar / 3D scan of some plants from my childhood home, including Cordyline Fruticosa Firestorm & ferns. The digital nature of the scan creates fragments / traces of memories, warped over time

Thanks to the curators for including my work in this exhibition! Love seeing & being part of this exhibition of 3D works / digital objects / sculptures
