Final Fantasy XIII Battle System

The Final Fantasy XIII battle system details have been revealed.

• Command Stock: Players selection which action they’d like to from a cluster of five “Action” slots.
• Cost: Each of these five actions has a number attached to it and denote the number of slots a particular action requires.
• Enhanced ATB (Active Time Battle): This refers to the bar under Lightning’s name (the one with “444″). Players can perform various actions before it is empty. Commands with higher “Cost” drain the ATB bar faster.
• Symbol Encounter: Enemies appear on the game’s map. There is no battle screen transition.
• Chain & Bonus: Found at the screen’s top right. “Chain” refers to the number of consecutive hits inflicted. It’s not clear what “Bonus” refers to, but Famitsu thinks it’s related to Final Fantasy VII’s Limit Break.
• Enemy HP: The HP and names of your foes are displayed — unlike previous games.

In the latest issue of Gemaga, Final Fantasy XIII director Tetsuya Nomura said that gameplay from FFXIII will be shown some time this year.

Final Fantasy XIII will be at TGS next month. However, Square-Enix does not plan to have a playable version at that time.

Final Fantasy XIII Demo Over 2 Hours

According to the latest issue of Famitsu, the Final Fantasy XIII demo lasts 2 hours, which is longer than the DVD it’s packaged with (FFVII: Advent Children).

Final Fantasy XIII in 2009

Square-Enix has announced plans to release Final Fantasy XIII in 2009. At least in Japan anyway. It is unclear when the rest of the world can expect the game, or whether the Xbox 360 port will delay the western release.

Final Fantasy XIII Demo

The Final Fantasy XIII demo will be included with Advent Children: Complete Blu-ray edition, which will be available in March 2009. Word floating around the web suggests that, because this is a Blu-ray title, the demo will be exlusive to the PS3.

Final Fantasy XIII on Xbox 360

Square-Enix confirmed at E3 what has long been rumored but greeted with much skepticism. Final Fantasy XIII will be released on the Xbox 360, not just the PlayStation 3, marking the first time in more than a decade that the Final Fantasy franchise has strayed from a Sony platform.

Although European and North American versions have been announced, this does not appear to impact Japan, where Xbox 360’s presence is probably not worth their time. Also, there are (currently) no plans to release Final Fantasy Versus XIII on any other platforms.

PlayStation fans will probably consider this a slap in the face, but this should nonetheless help sell more units.
