But get these apps quickly because most are just free for a limited time. Some apps are free for even less than a day!

Get new gliders to fly further and higher. Upgrading your rockets will also help you by providing that extra speed boosts when you need it. Other upgrades will make you come back for more money-making flights.

Why is it Great? Even if the main character is not Santa Claus, this game is definitely one of the most addicting and fun game in the App Store!

Other Great Apps Gone Free:

Minim

Each level is won when only 1 atom is left. Just tap on 2 of the same number connected by a bond to combine them. For example, put two 1’s together and you will get one 2.

There are bonds that let you switch atoms around. Wow, chemistry in action. There are also other features that make this a great puzzle game. Puzzle fans rejoice!

Why is it Great? Never before has a puzzle game make you remember those chemical reactions that you learned in school. And guess what? It is surprisingly fun!

Wow. Big surprise. Isn’t this exactly what they have done with all their other wildly popular products? Case in point: the iPhone. The 8GB was brought out at $599US on June 29,2007 and the price dropped $200US on September 5, 2007 even though they were selling like hotcakes. This was done in conjunction with the dropping of the 4GB handset and only seemed like the right thing to do. Amid howls of unfair pricing from early adopters, Apple CEO Steve Jobs wrote in an open letter to iPhone customers that everyone who purchased an iPhone at the higher price “and who is not receiving a rebate or other consideration”, would receive a US$100 credit to be redeemed towards the purchase of any product sold in Apple’s retail or online stores.

It works like this:
iPad 64gb 3G……$829

AT&T unlimited data plan for the iPad…..$29.99 per month

—————————————————————————–

Being the first in your group to wow the pants off everyone with your iPad = PRICELESS

Yes, sorry to say, early adopters will pay the price to own their spanky new iPad but that is the whole point for the fanboys and girls (of which I am one, I must disclose at this point). I cannot wait for my iPad. I take it as a given that the price will drop. The time from the moment I lay my hands on it until the price does drop is, in my mind, totally worth it. Any many people I have talked to are on the same wavelength. This device is putting fun back into computers and we are going to be jumping on the bandwagon early, no matter what the cost. After all, it’s only money!

The real news is what else Bill Shope was told, according to Silicon Alley Insider:

Management declined to tip their hand about Verizon.

Instead, they say they’re focused on international expansion. The iPhone is only in 86 countries, while rivals are in 160 countries.

Apple is happy with enterprise adoption of the iPhone, and it thinks that’s a market that will expand.

The movie industry’s legacy deals are screwing Apple from getting the content it wants. For example, HBO has locked out certain titles which Apple can not get. The contracts protecting those locks won’t expire for a few years.

It’s hard to sell a TV show for $1.99 when Redbox is renting a whole movie for $1.00.

On e-books, Apple cares less about the long-tail and more about the hits. It wants the ‘right titles quickly.’

Apple believes the education market presents a massive opportunity for the iPad.

Management doesn’t see the iPad eating at either iPhone sales or notebook sales.

Despite the low price of the iPad, Apple “expects strong profit performance.”

Apple will be nimble with the price of the iPad. If people aren’t buying iPads, Apple could cut the price.

To the critics of the iPad, Apple says ‘bite us.” Okay, not really, but they say most critics haven’t played with one, and they’re focused on what the iPad doesn’t do, rather than what it does.

Apple plans more retail stores around the world.

So there you have it people, Apple’s marketing strategies and conundrums in a nutshell.

Talk amongst yourselves….better yet, let me know if you are going to buy or wait?

During the hype and build-up awaiting the iPad´s debut, I began to feel a bit like a 5th grade girl who reports on every rumor no matter how unsubstantiated. It felt good. So I´ll continue.

These photos are courtesy of iResQ, a Kansas based Apple Care outfit. It appears that they have come into possession of a possible new casing for the next generation iPhone. Will it mean a faster processor, better battery life, or is it simply a knockoff “iPhone” that have been slumming around Shanghai tech markets since the first-gen iPhone was announced?

Looking at this photo, one would simply need their business card to leak this story and following Mr. Jobs profane wrath of God speech a couple of weeks ago, I wonder why anyone would be going out of his or her way to anger him these days especially if your livelihood depended on your repair certification dependent on the folks out in Californialand.

The site also reports that it seems the screen is to be directly glued to the digitizer, an odd, almost archaic step backwards unless….it is a way of getting people with jailbroken phones to pay service fees because of the warranty they voided upon installing Cydia in an effort to control their own phones.

That seems a little far fetched even to me, no great fan of Big Brother Jobs these days. I am curious what this “reflective surface” is though, is it some new means to cook Hot Pockets, A laser Pointer, or just somebody messing with us?

“If you build your application with features based on a user’s location, make sure these features provide beneficial information. If your app uses location-based information primarily to enable mobile advertisers to deliver targeted ads based on a user’s location, your app will be returned to you by the App Store Review Team for modification before it can be posted to the App Store.”

Two to three years ago, I would have simply suggested that Apple was trying to protect their users. Today, I feel they are trying to protect their market share in the untested waters of mobile advertising. Apple know that Google is their biggest enemy. Look at their recent quarrels, and gotcha acquisition record. When Apple showed an interest in AdMob, Google quickly snapped it up. Apple with its huge war chest of cash is working out a way to match Google in this market, the overpriced acquisition of Massachusetts based mobile ad company Quattro Wireless last month, just the most recent example. The introduction of Android and to a lesser extent the Nexus One is proof Google wants an upper hand in mobile advertising. Google´s CEO has said in recent months,

“We will make more money from mobile advertising,” Schmidt said when asked about the possibility of mobile computing taking off. The thought is that advertising on mobile platforms will be much more highly targeted than it currently is on the desktop.

“I never worry about Microsoft,” Schmidt said in wrapping up his thoughts.

It will be interesting to see how Apple interprets “beneficial”. Frankly, in free apps I expect some level of advertisements; that is a small price to pay for something that does not have a traditional price tag, but rather one of zero. If I´m going to be receiving advertisements, I WANT them to use my location, that would be HELPFUL. I hate bashing Apple but it just seems like more interference in my life as end user. If you are truly looking out for me why not force app developers to give me an option of whether I want location services used, rather than keeping it to yourself until you can best determine how to monetize it for Cupertino?

The ball is in their court. As many reported last Friday AT&T has cleared the way for Slingplayer Mobile to work over their 3G network, pending approval from Apple. But is it in Apple´s best interest? Might they hold it up awaiting improvements in AT&T´s 3G network, or perhaps even until the release of the 3G iPads to begin shipping?

I know there are a number of people out there who are still hesitant to purchase an iPhone because of the dropped calls on AT&T´s exclusive carrier arrangement. While it is AT&T´s problem, Apple certainly has to share some of the blame and adding TV streaming over 3G can´t help.

But imagine the possibilities, an iPad that Dad can use for emailing, but while driving the kids to school that same iPad will have full access to the home television and allow the kids to watch their favorite cartoons on a substantial screen. Anywhere in the country the whole family will have access to its DVR. Or, the ability to attend live sporting events yet have access to the halftime show, commentary, and instant replay. The possibilities are staggering. I was able to watch the Super Bowl last night but rather than Spanish commentary provided in Buenos Aires a SlingBox brought us the game as it was aired in the states with the proper commercials in my local bar. Now the idea that I could have this in my lap, or pocket is wonderful.

Presumably, The 3G iPads, and there is much talk over subsidized iPads with a two year Verizon contract, will make this a must have application. Might Apple hold off on its release so they can include this app as a possible selling point for the iPad and to soften the additional $130 expected to accompany the WiFi and 3G model?

Slingplayer Mobile, which allows access to a Slingbox over the iPhone has been available since last year, but solely, for use over WiFi networks. Unless of course you have a jailbroken iPhone with Tricker3G installed. Tricker3G has been fooling AT&T serviced iPhones into believing they were running on WiFi rather than 3G for nearly a year. It only works for Skype, Fring, and SlingPlayer Mobile but it works and it´s free.

The app itself is available for $29.99 (App Store) but of course requires the $179 Slingbox Solo installed at home, or even better if you don´t live alone, the $299 Slingbox PRO-HD which not only broadcasts in HD, and from multiple video inputs but does not make you a slave to the choices being made by someone watching the same TV. Sling, Inc. is promising free upgrades for present owners of the WiFi only app the moment Apple approves it.

“Great Apps Gone Free” is our daily column that features great and valuable paid apps that have just gone free. They have gone free temporarily because the developers want their apps to get some exposure and user ratings for promotional purposes.

Usually there may be 20 to 50 apps gone free per day.
A new personal assistant app is now available in the iTunes store in the US only, called Siri. This app is being touted as a “do engine” instead of a search engine. Reminders of Star Trek and 2001 A Space Odyssey abound as this app is able to use voice commands to search up information you are seeking and then, in some cases, perform actions with that information. “Computer! Earl Grey Tea, hot!” No it is not quite there yet but it seems like a great start. You can ask it to find a romantic Italian restaurant in your current location and it will generate a list of options using several sources such as Google Maps, restaurant reviews and the like. You can then even ask Siri to make you a reservation at the restaurant of your choice at the time you request using Open Table. Pretty slick.

Reviews are coming in from users putting it to the test and it ranges from “scary good” to “buggy but I want to see the next version” so apparently it is working well for American iPhone 3Gs users. Alot of partners are going to have to get on board to make this available worldwide, which will will hopefully happen soon, but don’t hold your breath. According to an interview written up on Mashable CEO and co-founder of Siri, Dag Kittlaus:

Siri was born from SRI’s CALO Project. The CALO Project (or Cognitive Assistant that Learns and Organizes) is the largest Artificial Intelligence project in U.S. History. DARPA invested $150 million into CALO over the course of five years. What was learned from CALO has been implemented into Siri.

Whether that information can be extrapolated to use around the world is still unknown. Siri has engaged the services or domains the likes of OpenTable, MovieTickets, StubHub, CitySearch and TaxiMagic. This list is to be expanded and once it is, our lives may be made much easier without having to jump through the hoops the internet currently demands of us. While some detractors are saying this app will essentially dumb down the population by allowing machines to do our work, I say there are many tasks machines can do for us to help us free up time for more important things like spending time with our families and working for volunteer agencies to improve our communities. Making dinner reservations, ordering tickets, finding movie schedules all are on my pet peeve list. This app has incredible potential and the more mundane tasks it can take on the better!

“Great Apps Gone Free” is our daily column that features great and valuable paid apps that have just gone free. We’ve tested them and filtered out crappy apps from our list so these apps are actually worth your time to download. Get these apps quickly because most are just free for a limited time. Some apps are free for even less than a day!

So don’t be late in getting these premium apps and games for free. Follow us on Twitter or subscribe by email to get instant daily free app notifications.

Please check the price of app before downloading. Prices can change at any time. Sometimes apps are even just free for a few hours before they get a new price.

Wow! It is Super Friday! We have 5 great games to download for the weekend! Among the 6 are 3 games that are named after animals: lion, monkey, and mouse. What a coincidence!

Mouse About

Mouse About $0.99->FREE Offer expired. Follow us on Twitter so you won’t miss it next time! (App Store)

Mouse About is a fun and exciting puzzle game that requires your little mouse to pick up all the food on the screen before the time is up. The mouse, Marv, can only run in a straight line. You can flick anywhere on the screen to make it run right, left, up, and down. He will only stop when he reaches a food or an obstacle. If Marv runs off of the screen without picking up all the food, then it loses a heart. Losing all hearts will end the game.

Mouse About’s puzzles are generated randomly. So for those that are looking for a walkthrough, you are out of luck. Mouse About’s puzzles are also timed. That means you cannot just stare at the puzzle for 5 minutes before planning your food run. There are also many different environments in the game. Marv can even go diving and pick up sushi underwater!

Why is it Great? With lots of interesting environments and randomly generated levels, Mouse About is a fun and exciting puzzle game that will have you coming back for more.

Lion Pride

Lion Pride $0.99->FREE  (App Store)

Are you tired of the same flight control type line drawing game? Get Lion Pride. Lion Pride may play like a line drawing game. But it actually plays more like a real time strategy game.

You can control up to four lions. Your objectives are to attack boars, zebras, and other preys to feed your young as well as protecting them from hyenas. Just draw a line to your prey, and your lion will attack it. Be careful, unlike flight control type line drawing games, your prey will run away from you. You must do some thinking before rushing to attack your prey.

When attacking bigger animals, you may have to use more than 1 lion to subdue it. One lion will strike from the front while another lion awaits it as it runs the other way. There are even elephants for you to attack with your pride of lions.

Why is it Great? A line drawing game that is so unique and good, you will wonder why you’ve never heard it before.

Covert Wars

Covert Wars $1.99->FREE (App Store)

In Covert Wars, you play as a soldier going behind enemy lines, shooting terrorists from a distance with a rifle. We aiming at enemies, you go into “scope” mode and use your accelerator control skills to shoot terrorist. They can also counterattack you. Luckily, you will be able to hide behind the rocks and walls until their firing ceases temporarily.

Why is it Great? This game feels like one of those arcade games in which players shoot enemies with a gaming rife in their hand.

Car Mania

Car Mania $0.99->Offer expired. Follow us on Twitter so you won’t miss it next time! (App Store)

Care Mania is a line drawing and traffic control game. Navigate colored cars to the parking lot specific to their colors. Careful, you can only go forward on the road. If two cars collide head-on, you will loose energy. If your cars collide too many times. It is game over.

There are also other levels with other objectives to keep you busy. You will be able to control the movements of cars, motorcycles, and trucks in various levels.

Why is it Great? Lots of cars and lots of challenge. Car Mania is an excellent line drawing strategy game.

Paradise Monkeys

Paradise Monkeys $0.99->FREE (App Store)

Tired of the same old whack a mole iPhone tapping game? Paradise Monkeys is different. Don’t whack those funny monkeys that don’t want to be tapped. Buy items to make you stronger and the game easier. New characters in the game will make it more interesting as you go through each stages.

Why is it Great? Paradise Monkeys is a funny game that immerses you in a delirious tropical world full of monkeys like no other!

App of the Day:

Sir Revs-a-Lot

Sir Revs-a-Lot $.99 –> FREE Offer expired. Follow us on Twitter so you won’t miss it next time! (App Store)

Aliens have attacked Earth. Your only hope is to attack them with your car. No, you don’t fire missiles against those UFO’s and other alien aircrafts. To destroy those annoying aliens, you must throw yourself onto an incoming missile and crash your car into those alien aircrafts. The more hits you can get without falling back to the ground the better score you’ll get!

That’s right. The concept of this game is insanely crazy, but that doesn’t mean that it is not fun. On the contrary, hitting those UFO’s with your crashing car and getting great combo hits is good, dumb fun.

Sir-Revs-a-Lot is Openfeint enabled. That means you can get achievement points and get ranked on the global leader board. Crash your car on an UFO today!

Why is it Great? When do you ever get to crash a car against alien space ships?

Other Great Apps:

Flux Tunes

Flux Tunes $.99 –> FREE Offer expired. Follow us on Twitter so you won’t miss it next time! (App Store)

Like Flick Tunes which we featured before as an app that had gone free, Flux Tunes lets you control your iTunes music with gestures. Tap on the screen anywhere to pause or play your music. Swipe right to go forward to the next song, and swipe left to go back to the previous songs. There are also gestures that will help you to navigate your iPod playlists with some multi-touch actions.

Flux Tunes is a perfect app for drivers. Don’t get distracted by trying to switch a song while driving. Just swipe your screen and listen to the music that you want!

Why is it Great? It is a feature that should have come with the default iPod app.

Please check the price of app before downloading. Prices can change at any time. Sometimes apps are even just free for a few hours before they get a new price.

Given the attention Apple seemingly loves; it was a surprise back in November last year that they began offering an iTunes preview with little fanfare or announcement. This allows you to get information on the song or album without having to open iTunes. Certainly, an olive branch to the PC community as iTunes runs natively and quickly on a Mac.

Neither of these screamed terribly important at the time, chances are i could have done a YouTube search for most of these songs and listened to the whole song.

Today, saw the launching of App previews, outside of iTunes. Once again I assume this was simply to placate the PC community. OK, it provides a nice page that loads in your browser rather than insisting on your opening iTunes with information about the app, price, comments and a link to buy. As an iPhone owner, like most people who also own iPhones I would guess, generally have iTunes open already. It is the only way to share music, videos, apps, etc. Except for Cydia of course.

It’s a nice addition no doubt but I’m not phoning my friends with excitement. By clicking on a direct app link you are still prompted to open iTunes, just given a little more information on a larger screen than the iTunes or App Store.

Again thanks. This would be a much better addition to my computing world if, when in the browser, i could continue to look around without iTunes opening, I cannot. If you click on other apps purchase by this user in the comment area, or additional apps by the developer you are sent right back to iTunes, defeating the purpose a bit. Once Apple remedies this, I will once again with a little boredom in my voice say, “Thanks”.

1112 also features a complex and twisted story line. Take a journey to explore this intriguing mystery and discover the reasons behind the main character’s constant headaches and strange dreams.

Why is it Great? Did we mention great graphics, animations, and the ability to interact with every character and object you see?

Cube&Seesaw

Your score can also change depending on where you drop your cubes. You can get 8X the regular score by dropping a cube near the edge of the seesaw. But at the same time, they are likely to fall from it as well since it will make the seesaw waver more aggressively when the cubes are on the edge.

Why is it Great? This physics based game is really amazing. The wavering seesaw will have you on the edge constantly.

I’m not quite ready to throw my iPhone out the window and buy Google’s Nexus One. In fact, the only way at present that my iPhone is going out a window is if someone throws me out first with it in my hand or pocket. I am, however, tired of Apple telling me what I can and cannot have, how to use MY phone, and what is acceptable and what is not.

Today’s new iPhone OS 3.1.3 “upgrade” offers nothing new. I take that back, it has improved support for the Japanese keyboard. It fixes a bug that showed inaccurate battery levels on the 3GS . It also took away jailbroken and unlocked phones from thousands of users unfamiliar with the jailbreaking process.

Nothing really useful were added, but it does take away jailbreaking. I like my multi-tasking iPhone. It doesn’t seem like Apple wishes to give me one, so I have to do it myself.

That was the only reason for this upgrade, and Steve Jobs and every Apple executive know it and they should be ashamed. Perhaps afraid, the only reason the iPhone is not multi-tasking already is that Apple doesn’t want the phone to act slow compared to its present speed, especially with that 1GHz super processor recently released by Google in the Nexus One. I’m not a criminal, I bought my phone. I signed my contract with AT&T and then I left the country unexpectedly. I had no choice but to open my phone up to its possibilities. And again it’s my phone.

As an act of protest and as a way of telling Apple you want your phone to be “smart” too, do not downgrade your phone with a this new upgrade to 3.1.3. Perhaps, you should even jailbreak it. For those of you unfamiliar with Backgrounder and ProSwitcher they are two apps available from Cydia that allow you to determine which apps you would like running at the same time and seamlessly switch between them at will. In fact, ProSwitcher may be one of the best put together apps I’ve experienced on the iPhone, authorized or not.

It may even save your home key from the wear and tear of constant use, as well as yourself tons of time. The following are a few great personal examples of how ProSwitcher has saved me countless minutes and headaches.

Living outside of the United States I am able to leave Skype running at all times while enjoying the rest of the iPhone’s features. Not only saving me tremendous connectivity issues but a lot of money with the SkypeIn service.

I am an avid reader and believe Stanza to be a top reader app, though each time my email in boxes chime I must shut down Stanza to see what it might be and then reopen Stanza. 3 Minutes.

My mother called me from an airport in Florida, again on Skype, needing some important information I had in my Mail application, i was able with the help of headphones to find this without interrupting the call. Later as she continued on and on, I was able to send a few mails while she continued to drone on without her being any the wiser.

Really simple iCal inquiries while on the phone and texting at the same time. I was on FaceBook as well.

While playing the new GTA: Chinatown Wars and awaiting an important email, I simply paused the game shook the iPhone (a setting in ProSwitcher) , to raise the home screen. Responded to the mail, and returned to my mid mission spot in this great game from Rockstar.

These all occurred in the last week, and as you can see the possibilities are endless. Whether you jailbreak your own phone is up to you, and I (nor this site) accept any responsibility for your actions and any damage you may cause to Steve Jobs or your phone, but this multi-tasking is what you deserve. Unfortunately, only those working outside of Apple, are giving it to you. But when Apple finally gives in make sure you thank these “hackers” for forcing Apple to offer something these “hackers” have already given us.

Finally, and I don’t know your personal feelings about Bono or U2, but it reminds me of a funny story. Without going into too much detail a couple years ago Bono in the middle of a concert starting snapping his fingers in between songs, in his holier than though way, he announced to the crowd, “Every time I snap my fingers” SNAP… SNAP…”A child in Africa dies”..SNAP…SNAP..finally he was interrupted by someone in the crowd who shouted, “Then stop snapping your F&%#ing fingers” He left the stage, and returned 20 minutes later with what the people wanted, music.

Stop clicking upgrade. CLICK, CLICK Another jailbreak-ed iPhone dies CLICK, CLICK. By not downloading this new “upgrade” you will be telling Apple that you too want your iPhone to sing. Oh, and multitasking.

Right from the get go we knew about the Flash fail. 15 minutes into the iPad debut, Steve sat down with his iPad and opened up the web and bingo, there was the familiar little blue lego block on the screen, projected as large as an elephant. Some potential users recoiled in horror. No Adobe Flash? Since its introduction in 1996 Flash has become a popular method for adding animation and interactivity to web pages. Yes, much like the iPhone and iPod Touch, Apple has confirmed that Flash will continue to be unwelcome on the main operating system for all three devices. Howls of protest ensued.

Others of us rejoiced. Adobe Flash is a proprietary software constantly requiring updates and fixes. Half of all the updates Apple releases for it’s computers are “improved security and stability” for issues around Flash. It is antiquated and buggy and if you have a slower machine or web connection your system resources will be overtaxed by Flash. Many people have turned off Flash on their browsers, simply to improve the web experience. So we are not in any way shape or form surprised or upset that the iPad, like it’s mobile cousins, will not allow Flash to run.

There is much speculation as to why Apple has such a hate on for Flash. Crashing OSX on a regular basis is not a small part of it. But bugs and fixes aside, there are a bunch of reasons for Apple to want to deep six Flash, ranging from Steve Jobs meting out revenge for Flash taking out Quicktime as the main video delivery system on the web. Apple may just want to be ahead of the curve, leaving the outdated multimedia platform in it’s dust. Apple also could be seen to be supporting more open source development since Flash is proprietary and the new kid on the block, HTML5 is open source, or at least closer to open source as it will still require some video codec licensing. HTML5 which is an emerging web standard, is quickly being adopted by browser manufacturers and developers, offers native video playback and animation tools that don’t require Flash plug-ins. Google even lent the new kid on the block some street cred by adding HTML5 support to YouTube in a Beta test.

Adobe has only made efforts to belittle Apple for their decision, suggesting that the company chooses to enforce restrictions to maintain their uniqueness and in doing so, only serve to limit and frustrate users. This does not seem to imply that the multimedia company wishes to miss out on the almost certain success of this new Apple release. In fact, Adobe has already created a way around Apple’s wishes, making it possible for developers to use Flash in the creation of new iPhone and iPad applications. So those Flash lovers out there will be able to get their fix through their apps, don’t you worry.

To Flash or not to Flash, that is the question. Apple has made up it’s mind and it is going Flash free and that is quite ok with us.

Mission Repair, a certified Mac service provider, recently made public that upon receiving a shipment of iPad frames, they found an interesting “spot” in the frame’s construction.

This “spot”, they realized, was identical to the one for installing the iSight camera in a standard MacBook. Trusting their suspicions, they went to the stock shelves and found a spare iSight camera to be a perfect fit.

It certainly looks like it. The tech world and the media’s biggest complaint of what the iPad is missing seems to be right there, what happened?

I’m getting a little tired of defending Mr. Jobs and Apple but I’m going to hazard a guess. It didn’t work to his, nor their standards. If that was the case, then it is a good decision to leave out the camera for now. I would prefer no camera to one that gives blurry images, or an operating system incapable of handling it.

I’ll wait, rather than have this wonderful piece of technology sullied by a poor video conference solution. Not to mention, have you thought of the view of your chin this computer would provide without accessories as it sat on your lap or on the table? I will use my Macbook, another sexy device I own designed by the folks from Cupertino. Perhaps you’ve heard of them. And if my phone rings Ill probably just use my iPhone to answer.

This is simply their first effort with a tablet, and for my dime or a starting price of 5000 dimes they have done a great job. As a writer, I especially didn’t expect it to replace my laptop or my desktop. I do, however, look forward to having a machine designed for note-taking and surfing the web, as well as writing shorter emails, off to one side where I can devote my full screen to OpenOffice, WordPress and PhotoShop without having to constantly shift between windows to get at the information I need.

This may be the tipping point for some. Some may choose to wait it out for the next generation iPad, one with a camera (hopefully one with a name that wasn’t punned by Mad TV three years ago, it truly is a horrible name). Perhaps I will simple buy one with 16GB and WiFi and not 64GB and a 3G connection. There was so much anticipation it has made it too easy for critics and skeptics.

No camera. I get it. Great reader. Great battery life. Too many critics watching too much Star Trek. Guess what? No transporter or hot, hot, hot Lt. Uhura either. Not even Christie Allie from Wrath of Khan.

As you can see from both photos it will be there. Better late than never. Much better good than not. I’m much more worried about how I transfer files to it. No one seems to be talking about that.

“Great Apps Gone Free” is our daily column that features great and valuable paid apps that have just gone free.
Each time you run, the course is randomly generated so that no run will be exactly the same. This game is also integrated with Openfeint. Thus getting achievements and toppig the global leaderboard should motivate you to run further.

Why is it Great? Falling walls and narrow bridges while running at full speed…. Doesn’t it sound like a great game?

Now that the flurry of speculation is over, people, companies and organizations are really starting to get their collective minds around this cool new piece of technology and how it will work into their daily lives. Stephen Colbert gave us a good example as he performed the hosting duties at the 52nd Annual Grammy Awards where the music industry congratulates itself. Colbert, the wildly popular comedic host of the Colbert Report, expertly whipped out an iPad from inside his tux jacket to read the nominees for an award. Jokes aside, the oversized iPod Touch looked awesome and performed well, the screen orienting itself as he waved it in the air. Right then millions of people started thinking hmmm…that’s pretty slick! I could use one of those things and look cool doing it! Even though Colbert’s own daughter didn’t seem to think so, every tween/teen I know would give their eye teeth for an iPad!

One of the places where technology is used hands on every day is in hospitals. The Sacramento Bee is reporting that hospital administrations are eagerly eyeing up the iPad. People like Dr. Javeed Siddiqui, associate medical director for the Center for Health and Technology at UC Davis Medical Center, told the Bee he’s excited by the potential the iPad offers for the medical industry. “It’s portable and it’s lightweight,” he said. “It has touch screen, a Web browser — and all those features can be utilized as a way to integrate technology in patient care.” The real potential for the iPad in the medical field will lie in the ability to write custom applications for the hardware. In addition to a number of bundled applications the iPad will have access to Apple’s App Store, which now offers more than 140,000 different options.

Mobihealthnews is reporting 10 takes on the iPad, some glowing, others not so positive. Some are bemoaning the lack of a stylus for writing, others say it is just too cumbersome in the small spaces devoted to doctors in operating rooms and care beds. The fact that it is not splash proof may be a problem where cleanliness is of the utmost importance. Obviously case makers will have a field day with the iPad, dreaming up ruggedized and waterproof fixes. These issues aside, the fact that the iPad provides a new reasonably-sized platform for software (app) development is gaining traction with the medical community and generating hope that the iPad will prove to be a very useful tool going forward. Technological advances in our medical infrastructure will be needed to keep up with the increasing needs of our aging population. Not the least of which is an device that you don’t need a magnifying glass to use!

In the weeks leading up to the iPad release, it seemed as though most tech sites had simply become rumor mills. Well, it appears as though that is to continue for some time. Wired Magazine has reported that Steve Jobs went on a bit of a profane rant regarding Adobe and Google.

Following the unveiling of the iPad and the rumors that preceded it, the day after its coming out party, the media seemed to focus on all that was wrong with the device. These included the lack of a forward facing camera for videoconferencing, the lack of a new OS for both the iPad and the iPhone, and that the iTab will not have Flash support.

It is perhaps for this reason that Jobs was reported to have said, about Adobe, in a town hall style meeting with Apple employees last week:

“They are Lazy”

“Whenever a Mac crashes more often than not it’s because of Flash.”

“No one will be using Flash, the world is moving to to HTML5“

HTML5 may well be the future, but it is a ways off to this date, though it was cannily used to produce the Google Voice mobile site in their own announcement release last week.

While I´ve chosen to add quotation marks to these remarks it seems unlikely that there will ever be any official verification of Mr. Jobs´statements. And it was for Google that he seems to have reserved the bulk of his vitriol last week.

And rightfully so, it´s not paranoia if people are truly out to get you. And the early January release of Google´s Nexus One “Superphone” was no less than a shot across Apple´s bow.

What was said? How about:

“We did not enter the search business, they entered the phone business.”

“Make no mistake they want to kill the iPhone. We won’t let them”

And finally, when commenting on Google´s corporate mantra of, “Don´t Be Evil” (My personal favorite, as Google has shown it can be).

“It’s bullshit.”

The battle between these two is clearing heating up, stay tuned.
